  • Is the Honda clone just as good as the Honda? Is the Honda better than the Harbor Freight's Predator and Briggs and Stratton Engines? All engines compared for fuel efficiency, oil consumption, noise and vibration during a 48-hour test. Used oil samples sent to an oil testing lab to provide information on wear metals. Engines also compared for torque and horsepower. I bought the engines, fuel to test the engines and all supplies to ensure an unbiased review. So, thank you for supporting the channel.

I have a buddy that heavily modifies them for go cart usage, using big bore kits and such, and when he does break them, depending on what breaks, it's often cheaper to buy a brand new predator than it would be to replace a broken bottom end of a Honda or Briggs.

The Briggs & Stratton lasted 6 years. The Honda we have not replaced yet after 9 years. This test mirrors our experience with the motors. The Honda is the most expensive, but the most durable. When the motor dies (as we expect it will soon) we will just get another Honda. They are really unsurpassed in motor durability.

Just a few years ago you could get the Predator engine for just $99 with the 1 year warranty. We used to put them on our racing go karts and they held up surprising well with the governor removed. There's actually two different styles of engines and they look identical except for the valve cover. The hemi version is the one you were testing in the video with a rectangle cast valve cover. The non hemi version has a octagon shape valve cover. The hemi version seems to last longer than the non hemi version but you have more upgrade accessories for the non hemi version. Engine started first pull and ran without an issue through a couple of cords of wood. The engine gets little maintenance- typical splitter it is used a few hours a year then stored for the next year. I have to give Honda engineers credit for designing the gold standard for small engines. It is always interesting to see various brands of snowblowers, lawnmowers, and pressure sprayers etc. which slap a "Powered by Honda" sticker in a predominant location. It seems people know what quality is and they are willing to pay for it. That said, I'm sure for most users the Predator engine would probably work very well and last for many years.

I think someone somewhere said that predator is made in same line than genuine Briggs and Stratton
It would be interesting to take both apart and try to mix up the parts and put both together.
But now I know what engine I'll use to replace genuine honda

Mower has a Briggs & Stratton; Ive had it for ~7 years. Still starts on the first pull every time. I change the oil like I do my trucks and give it a dash of Prolong, treating it like I treat my truck engines. I clean the plug a couple of time per year, re-gap it, and check the air filter a few times per year. When I bought it I had wished it was a Honda, but at the time price mattered. ~7years later Im impressed.

Here in Canada the Honda clone is sold under the King name. I installed one on an old John Deere model 110 to replace a tired Kohler 8hp. It has worked well with only one problem. If the fuel is left "on" the engine will flood particularly if the tractor is pointed downhill. Solution is to turn the fuel off at the carb when not running the engine. Price at Tooltown was about $180CDN or about $140US. Due to the short amount of time the engine runs it has been a terrific value IMO. Edit: The flooding problem is caused by fuel siphoning from the tank into the carb through the vent hose (pollution control) and only if the tank is really full.

I'm not surprised by the Predator at all. They're good engines. I'm a little disappointed in the Briggs... Honda is THE standard... but the Briggs Vanguard (NOT the Briggs in this test!) engines may be getting ready to dethrone the current King. Time will tell.

I love your work man. I would love to see the breakdown of price and operating cost of each unit. Like a metric that would show how many of the other brands you could buy before you spent as much as the Honda. Or even a percentage of value shown as if the fuel economy is better how many hours until you recoup your loss on purchase price (that is to say "Bang for your Buck"). This seemed to be a very close performance margin with a very large price margin.

I bought one of those Predator engines a few years ago when they were $99. I didnt need it, I just thought it was a great value. Its still sitting in the attic, in the box. I figured by the time the kids need an engine, they will cost 2x-3x more. Plus, theres a lot of after market support for those things.

I just randomly clicked this video out of curiosity, and I'm super impressed with your thoroughness in testing these engines. I'm also impressed with the Predator's performance vs. cost. However, if I needed to buy an engine I depended on for something important, I'd probably buy the Honda. If it's was for something like the go-cart in the video, yeah, I'd buy the Predator.
