Mahindra XUV700 And Plastic Tailgates: Mythbusting | Safety? Cost? Grades?

  • At the first drive of the Mahindra XUV700, we learnt the SUV uses a plastic tailgate. Of course, the word ‘plastic’ is rarely associated with something positive so rumours about quality, cost-cutting and crash safety competence spread quickly. So we decided to understand the matter with more depth by speaking to experts in the business to separate fact from fiction. In this video, we take a look at the finer details of thermoplastic tailgates and panels as a technology, explore why many car manufacturers now use them and discuss the pros and cons.
The XUV700 itself is off to a strong start with bookings for the first batch of 50,000 cars already snatched up. In fact, the first set of 25,000 cars sold at the introductory pricing found takers in under an hour. Subsequently, prices for the SUV have also been increased by around Rs 50,000. Delivery timelines, however, will vary based on the location/variant/configuration chosen and while the cars have been blocked, owing to ongoing component shortages, deliveries may still take a while.
With prices ranging between Rs 12L and Rs 23L, the XUV700 is available with petrol and diesel engines offered with both, manual and automatic transmissions. The diesel is also available with all-wheel drive and the SUV is sold with 5- and 7-seater configurations.

It will be not covered in the insurance as the plastic is covered only in B2B insurance for the first 5 years. How well the hinges ill perform in long run? Metal is always prefered over plastic because we can repair the metal and plastic we have to change the full panel. The paint will definitely look different in few years than the metal.

Tail Gate is made of plastic because it help in improved Radar set up when car needs 360 degree situational awareness..
If any one think plastics is a weak material in terms of metal then it's is because they are not aware of modern.material science .
it is custom make to have flexural modulus (stiffness) from < 1000 MPA to 10000 MPA> based on users custom made requirements..
In fact whole Dream liner fussilage and interior is made from composite carbon and polyester resins . COMPOSITE Fibre which comes from a plastics family .
Plastics inhibit extreme durability and weathering resistance due to unique chemistry.

How did you get to know that plastic omnium is the manufacturer of Tail gate for XUV 700 ??? You’re clearly sponsored by Mahnindra & Mahindra don’t lie. We can read between the lines and we know what’s happening behind the curtains. If plastic was so expensive to make then rolls Royce would’ve made its body out of plastic. While other manufacturers such as VW and Tata are made of complete raw steel, this Mahindra is made of plastic. I don’t agree to the point . Okay, the big question is What is the kerb weight of XUV 700 then ? No one is disclosing this information about its weight. Hey people be wise don’t spend your hard earned money on plastic junk, go for Tata or VW they give you solid metal. In case of a crash if your tailgate is metal, it will absorb the impact and deform due to its tensile strength, in case of plastic, it will be destroyed completely. And all those luxury cars you mentioned like LR, Jaguar, Citroen all these cars are rated worst for their quality in Europe. Do your research first before giving us facts.
