In Zelda I HD, majority of sprites are taken from Cadence of Hyrule. The skeletons with hats are based on a skelly from that game, same hat, color palette and face. Just changed the body.
There was a freeware game from a while ago called "Lyle in Cube Sector" that I think does this right. It's NES-style, but with things unavailable to the original hardware. An expanded palette, an extra layer of parallax, expanded sprite memory for particle effects, and a lot of subtle polish that stops it from crossing the border into SNES or Flash game territory. A bit like playing a cart with custom chips, or deck enhancers or something.
6:56 It took me like two minutes to even see what he was talking about here. It's definitely not "too obvious", only someone who already knew of that block's relevance would have their eyes gravitate towards it so quickly.
Hearing the Metroid intro music made me realize that a more grown-up movie adaptation of Metroid done with the style of James Cameron's Aliens would be phenomenal....
Are these even actually using the NES games at all? They just seem like someone made a flash game that tried to emulate it like all of those mario/sonic flash games. I dont recall Samus ever being able to machine-gun like that.
The HD Zelda 2, Megaman Ice Climber, Contra, Metroid, and Castlevania looked fantastic, they add a whole new flavor and really give the games more depth and soul, I’m surprised no one in chat spoke up about Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on SNES existing and essentially being what Vinny was playing but just with NES Soundtrack.
Most of the better hacks here don't increase the resolution to HD, but use more colors, making them look like SNES ports (like Super Mario All Stars). That's the easier way to do it, since it retains the art style. Increasing the resolution requires new art which has to be high quality. Contra pulls it off, but it takes a lot of skill to come up with something higher resolution which still looks good. (It's also not very high resolution, so you're still trying to do something like a vintage arcade game.) It's hard to do this sort of thing well since you're still bound by the limitations of the NES original (including how the sprites are chopped up). Almost all of these are very good efforts in their own right.
35:55 Entertaining indeed. As a kid this was one of the games that I had on my Famiclone and it was also the only game that my late father actually knew how to play and he would play it with me. Also, the fact that it has a level builder made it one of my most played games of all time, I think. And while the tile options aren't exactly mind blowing I tried to draw with it. I just sincerely wish that booti would pls acknowledge the level builder which he ignored every time this game has come up on things such as Plug & Play :(
When vinny said these are nes games with pngs over them and since the pack is "hd" nes games I was really expecting this to be some program that procedurally pulled pics off google to replace sprites, like replacing ground blocks in mario with actual jpegs of dirt etc. I'm both pleased and disappointed that's not what this is.
Zelda's adventure mad me happy. Making crap games and movies good is an art form of its own and even more challenging than making a good game from scratch, and I always wanted to see people remake those games.

So this is literally "What if Nintendo made a TurboGrafx-16"...
I'm so confused by how the Castlevania one has such good graphics but then the music is some sort of anti-aesthetic hodgepodge
A bit like playing a cart with custom chips, or deck enhancers or something.
goddamn duck hunt is really beautiful
6:56 It took me like two minutes to even see what he was talking about here. It's definitely not "too obvious", only someone who already knew of that block's relevance would have their eyes gravitate towards it so quickly.
Hearing the Metroid intro music made me realize that a more grown-up movie adaptation of Metroid done with the style of James Cameron's Aliens would be phenomenal....
Are these even actually using the NES games at all? They just seem like someone made a flash game that tried to emulate it like all of those mario/sonic flash games. I dont recall Samus ever being able to machine-gun like that.
They're basically ROM hacks mixed with texture packs
whoa, this is awesome thanks for introducing me
That Metroid one also looked like a flash game. SNES graphics and NES sprite limitations can breed uncanny valley, I'll tell you what.
Damn thank you for letting the music play on the Metroid
The HD Zelda 2, Megaman Ice Climber, Contra, Metroid, and Castlevania looked fantastic, they add a whole new flavor and really give the games more depth and soul, I’m surprised no one in chat spoke up about Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on SNES existing and essentially being what Vinny was playing but just with NES Soundtrack.
Would love it if that Zelda 2 gets finished by Thanksgiving.
Thank you for listening to the opening theme. That was legitness
Zelda 2 is my favorite & is super promising! I can't wait to see a more finished product.
Your Dr. Light Impression was hilarious. The stuttering and accent is spot on.
For those wondering, the Metroid intro was from an album named Metroid Resynthesized
It's amusing how some of the people making these get it and how some of them just completely do not get it. Pretty cool overall though.
This'll be nes graphics in 2013
Most of the better hacks here don't increase the resolution to HD, but use more colors, making them look like SNES ports (like Super Mario All Stars).
That's the easier way to do it, since it retains the art style. Increasing the resolution requires new art which has to be high quality. Contra pulls it off, but it takes a lot of skill to come up with something higher resolution which still looks good. (It's also not very high resolution, so you're still trying to do something like a vintage arcade game.)
It's hard to do this sort of thing well since you're still bound by the limitations of the NES original (including how the sprites are chopped up).
I just sincerely wish that booti would pls acknowledge the level builder which he ignored every time this game has come up on things such as Plug & Play :(
I kind of don't want to criticize these because they are labors of love, but half of them look a bit shite.
Oh hi Vinny!!!
