They were miscast evidenced by the fact that they had to advance the ages of both Nancy and Willie by roughly ten years by series end in order to accommodate the perception that they were actually the children of Doug and Kate. No doubt if the show was cast today it would’ve been an actress around the age Meredith Baxter was in 1979 playing Buddy and Annie’s mother.

Heaven forbid one would go for a walk, ride a bike, stretch, or any other activity. It's much better to gripe about aches, being tired and changes in the world. Also, Meredith Baxter's character was supposed to be around 30 years old. To cast her as the mother of two children (ages12 and 15, about.) would've been even worse. That would've made Baxter's character pregnant at 15.

As much as I enjoy the work of David Birney and Meredith Baxter, I tend to watch “Bridget Loves Bernie” with a cold heart now given Meredith’s revelations about David. When you have two actors who were married to one another while being together onscreen as well it makes it difficult to divorce theatre from reality. Although both actors are playing character roles, as a viewer my mind tends to wander towards what happens offscreen, is Bernie punching Bridget in the face when we aren’t looking? “Family” hits home for me as well as I was for all intents and purposes raised by a young single mother in the seventies and she too had a kid brother who was perpetually at loose ends. So suffice to say a lot of parallels.

They were married for about 15 years. They were divorced. Meredith was married 3 times before coming out as a lesbian.
