- This morning, one of my all-time favorite actresses, Meredith Baxter, revealed a personal secret she's been struggling with for years; she's a lesbian.
Meredith said quite eloquently that if you liked her before, that means you've liked a gay person. And she's still the same person.

Did you watch the interview? She explains why she felt the need to do this, to help others know it's OK to be gay and that she is representative the LGBT community in the media.
she explains why dude. after being suppressed for so long, gay and trans people have the right to tell whoever they please. especially celebrities. it makes regular people like they aren’t alone and people they idolize are alone in the same boat.
You don't string along 3 husbands and 5 children, then all of a sudden, make an announcement like this. She's a Diva.
@@georgeschubert9652 She probably didn’t know she was gay . Her husband, by the way beat her and abused her for many years. She didn’t set out to hurt anyone. We live in a culture where being gay is (or was) forbidden and socially unacceptable. It used to be a crime punishable by death, so it makes sense that gay people didn’t feel safe to admit, even to themselves, that they are gay. Meredith is a vulnerable woman who did the best she could, And we can not judge her or anyone because we can’t know all the information.

I also don't understand people's "need" to expose their sexual orientation. I'm actually not surprised at Ms. Baxter's 'disclosure' - but, she states she's a 'very private person' so - WHY 'the need to disclose' her sexual preferences?? I just don't get it....

What a beautiful and amazing woman! She's keeping it real. I hope this empowers anyone who deals with being true to themselves for whatever reason and is afraid of what others think. Being bold and true is liberating.
I grew up watching Family Ties. That announcement was from the heart, indeed! She's not that famous anymore. I don't think she ever really was, in comparison to Michael J Fox, Justine Bateman, (etc.). So she doesn't have much personal gain in coming out on national TV like that. Bravo to her!

Well, legally, there's still legislature being voted on that would allow people to be fired for being gay, lesbian, trans, whatever. So while you and I may think it's a passe subject, those groups still get needlessly harmed.

Funny how if someone proclaims to be gay all of a sudden they are considered how great she is but before she proclaimed this how many said how great Meredith was?
You may be right and why should we care what, or who she prefers in a relationship? Maybe she does, but her public are long gone. I still love re-runs of Family Ties and her Betty tv movie, but yeah, we don't care Meridith.

she didn't realize it 30 years ago, she just met someone and it all made sense in retrospect.

So glad for both her and her former costar Kristy McNichol that they finally felt the confidence to come out publicly- I know especially for poor Kristy having to be closeted was a very destructive thing in her life for decades.

I am devestated, I have always had a huge crush on Meredith and to know the she and I will have no future, I just don't want to live anymore. I only have one thing to say to her partner; "You lucky bitch".
I always knew she was a Lesbian. It constantly amazes me just how many people that I recognize as homosexual are still in the closet. I sometimes think I should just tell everyone to give me a call so I can tell them if they are homosexual. It would clear up the confusion in their mind and I could tell them it is "no big deal." :-)

God loves Meredith to hate the sin love the sinner and Meredith deserves to be loved and accepted our job is to not judge but love and be supportive and compassionate I respect and love Meredith for who she is happiness is what matters.
But is it a sin? The Bible references it in the same light that it views out of wedlock relations. 2000 years ago there was no such thing as monogamous same-sex relationship, so The Bible never discusses loving monogamous gay relationships. In the same vein that The Bible views eating shellfish as a bad thing but society has evolved past it, I think judging what Meredith does by calling it a sin isn't quite right either.

You claim you don’t want to hear this stuff, but these are public figures. People are going to see this woman out in public with her partner, and they will suspect and gossip. Rather than having it be some perceived secret, she decided to publicly address it. It’s freeing. It’s not for attention, sympathy or any other reason. It’s so that she can live her life in peace and not feel like she has to hide from strangers. Of course, this is all very obvious to normal people...

I am bisexual & I hate when people don't believe that bisexuality exists..."Oh, you're just dabbling/being pretentious/lying about who you are, and eventually you'll come around and realize you're straight/gay." There's prejudice all around. If a person is gay & comes out, they're usually believed & at least receive some deeply felt reaction from audiences, negative or positive. If a person comes out as bisexual, usually everyone just rolls their eyes.
It's a shame that because someone is famous, they feel they have to tell every bit of their personal life.

High profile people I think feel a certain responsibility to 'come out' as they know that by doing so they might actually help young gay people come to terms with their own orientation, as well as help move forward the equal rights movement. Good for her for doing this.
What difference does it make if she is or if she isn't? She is still the same person she always was, and I loved watching her on Family Ties.
I had to hear it out of her own mourth. I would never believed it if it came from somebody else. She is still truly admired!

U know I've gotten to the point where I just don't care who's Gay and who's heterosexual. All's I know is I could never be Gay. To me there's a reason God created woman and that's to be mans soulmate that they might marry and be fruitful and produce babies. If others feel they'd rather have same sex person, oh well. That's their life. I have a beautiful wife of 18 yrs and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Actually, she was probably just trying to hide and/or suppress her sexuality. A lot of gay people do that.
I have two beautiful daughters that I consider the oxigen with which I keep myself alive. There's nothing more important in my life than those two girls. They're both heterosexual, one moved out with her boyfriend, the other is making plans to do the same but if one of them ever had come to me to tell me she's having a relationship with another woman my answer would've been: "and?, good for you, I love you".

She didn't notice that she was attracted to women until she was many years into adulthood, and she thought she was attracted to three men enough to marry them but wasn't attracted to them at all? How does that work? It seems like a person's attractions and absences of attraction would be really obvious to that person. Can somebody explain this?
@mpdsmom I am and have always been bisexual. I have had relationships with both men and women, and I feel sexual attraction to both. Just as you don't understand bisexuality, I don't understand being attracted to one sex only - but that doesn't mean that I don't believe people who are.
Please try to remember that we all have the capacity to be wrong, just as we all have the capacity to be kind and to learn that every person's experience is unique.
When I first heard this I wasn't shocked but I just wish this could have been written into the show -- now that would have been something.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however who are we to judge? All of us fall short of God's glory. When Jesus died on the cross He died for all our sins, including gay people and if it's wrong then show some compassion..... Because he who goes without sin case the first stone. Suppose this was your mother, child.... or even your best friend, would you condemn for something you don't understand, shouldn't personality matter rather then who we choose as a partner? God made all of us (and I'm guessing) if a gay person could change they would, considering all the things they go through on a day-to-day basses. The bible says judge not, and you shell not be judged. What I'm trying to say is, let's be more like Jesus and love one-another despite our faults. And if you can't do that then there's nothing wrong with us, there's something wrong with you.

She's still a pretty lady. I can't believe she is 62. I do not know so much if she's attracted to women versus this is probably just easier for her. It's like being married to your best friend. I am sure her and her 'partner' are not having crazy sex every night.

She didn't plan it this way. She didn't realize she was gay until after she married 3 times and had 5 kids. If she hadn't met her partner 7 years ago maybe she would still be thinking she's straight.

@sarah4hp She said that she was attracted to men. . she probably just had bad luck with men but that doesnt mean shes a lesbian. Shes bisexual if anything. you dont just wake up one day and become gay. You might wake up and become bisexual and realize you like one sex over the other more. Thats like saying you no longer like chocolate after years of liking it. It just doesnt happen. I use to not like green beans but now i love em. But I still like everything else I liked before.

Why must this "Gay Issue" be politicized? Because it needs to be so that Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Transgender people are given equal rights and protection. We pay taxes, we deserve representation. Civil Unions are not equal to Marriage.
I think you're questions a valid and not necessarily negative. It gives opportunity for dialogue. Not everyone knows, understands what it's really like to be gay out or closeted in this society.
