Just saying, 30 minutes of Tarkin, a distracting R2 and 3PO cameo, the name dropping and the not so subtle winks, Vader's scenes, the classic X-Wings and TIEs, oh look it's Leia, the Death Star, Mon Mothma....
I' am sorry, both movies rely a lot on nostalgia, but R1 fanservice is just too distracting at times. Hardly a "stand alone" movie.

Really, what did you expect to see in a PREQUEL of A NEW HOPE? Goofie and donald duck or maybe A NEW HOPE characters? Is the word "fanservice" that fun to use? What were your expectations from a film that ends 10 minutes before the beginning of ANH?
Rogue 1 is a prequel and yet introduces more mythos and new concepts than TFA. The emotional pay offs in the film are guided by Jyn and Krennic. TFA payoffs are driven by Han Solo's death and finding Luke..... So no, the story and plot of R1 does not rely on nostalgia. In actuality, the story that takes place decades later weirdly does.

I didn't grow up with Star Wars, so none of the fan service really changed my opinions on the movies. From my perspective, The Force Awakens was a competently made movie with likable characters and a story that I was invested in. Rogue One was bland fan service with no likable or memorable characters. I heard so many great things about the final battle of Rogue One, so even though I was let down by the rest of the movie, I thought that I would at the very least find the ending entertaining. As it turns out, it was just an entire third act of "Remember this?"

It’s pretty ironic how Rogue One was directly within the new hope timeline, and it happened to be the most original Star Wars film Disney has released so far.
Rouge One blows Force awakens away no contest lol. I went into it too thinking it was gonna suck like like Ep7. I was blown away with how good it was. Best movie I seen since Empire. Kevin Smith also said the same thing and I agree 100%. Even Lucas said Disney just wanted to do the same story over with Ep7. He even offered to do the first movie to send them in the right direction and they said no. They should have took his advice to do a whole new story. Rough One was way better. The two guys that did it are long term Star Wars fans. They had a lot of freedom to do whatever. No one breathing down their neck, over what needed to be in the movie. That's why it was actually good. In fact they should let those two guys direct every Star Wars movie going forward. But of course that will never happen.

Rogue One had the right look (classic Stormtroopers, rebels, ships, amazing new creatures) and the story idea was great. The Force Awakens story was not so good and the character's actions didn't make sense a lot of the time, but The Force Awakens captured that fun Star Wars Adventure feeling and gave us fun, likeable characters. Both films possess important qualities that the other one lacks. Overall, I liked Rogue One better because the story felt more authentic. The Force Awakens felt more like a reboot, and a story that didn't exactly feel like it went the way Star Wars should have gone. Though, Episode 8 could possibly make Episode 7 better.
I didn´t like any of the characters in TFA. Rey alone is easily the worst written character in all of Star Wars. Also, the overall quality of the acting was rather poor. General Hux´ speech was the worst bit of acting I have seen in a long time, and certainly the worst there has ever been in Star Wars.

As someone who loves A new hope, No Force Awakens is no where near Episode 4 in actual plot. Only in plot devices. JerickHerick35 prequels were better, go on hate on me!! Jar Jar and cringey romance are better than rehashed plot, plot holes and inconsistencies galore! Also the prequels did have some good parts the the lightsaber duels, particularly duel of the fates, ewan mcgregor, ian mcdermad (forgive my spelling there) and john williams score (there was nothing new or interesting in his TFA score). The prequels are waay better than The Farce Rehashens!!

JerickHerick35 same I also still like TFA, but it really deliberately stole as much as it could from A New Hope and even Empire! It didn't even bother to design new starfighters. It revisited the same trope with the Jedi being wiped out, giant planet destroying balls in space, dessert planet, snow planet, vital info being hidden in a droid. Also the characters motivations and actions make no sense at times (I'm to tired to explain all right now, but I'll come back later) I feel TFA is worse cause it had the prequels to make up for, and all it did to make up fr it was make people think were watching the originals over again, And it actually worked!! I can't believe people were brainwashed into loving this bantha poodoo!!! Tomorrow I'll come back and explain all the inconsistencies and plot holes!!

Rogue One to me is the better film. It is flawed. Let me make that clear. I liked the characters in Rogue One, but we'd needed more time to spend with them. As such, I kind of wished that the story was a bit more character driven than plot, as we'd know what happened and that would have been fine. And it would have helped the pacing. I will say this; TFA has a better cast and the acting was better.
Rogue One, I prefer the characters. But really, Rogue One just felt right. We actually got to see so many planets in RO. Old and new. The movie's final act is leagues above TFA and to me I'm usually forgiving of a film if it ends strongly. And it did. I'll admit I was disappointed with the soundtrack. Say what you will about TFA's score, but we at least got ONE memorable track.
Overall, Rogue One when i walked out I felt great. I said to myself, "Star Wars is back. TFA, I felt kind of cheated. The Last Jedi I have a feeling will surpass both as Rian Johnson is an amazing director. But to me, Rogue One feels like an old Expanded Universe story adapted. TFA, not so much. But hey, just my view.
On the soundtrack point, Michael Giacchino had very little time to compose it, so I think he did a good job for the pressure he was under.
RadioactiveOwl95 I figured. Giacchino is usually a good composer and Alex Desplat was supposed to have composed it, but left due to scheduling conflicts.
I do not fault Giacchino for doing something differently. I love John Williams, but SWs cannot live under the shadow of his music forever. But really, it just felt really bland. No Imperial march or anything. A bit disappointing. It is not bad, but for SWs a bit bland.
Neil Ganti I didn't really have much of an impact on me either until I looked up the soundtrack on youtube and found myself loving The Imperial Suite, Hope and Your Father Would Be Proud.

My problem with force awakens is that's it's a plagiarized movie.
plus light sabers seemed to be gimped. how fin was sliced many times yet never lost a limb or body part.
and let's not forget that rey pretty much went from being a bum to a jedi in one day. we already had rules on how to become a jedi. it takes a while but for some reason rey was winning and had plot armor.
based on those faults which break the rules of star wars I think it's safe to say force awakens has the bigger problems that just can't be over looked.
can you imagine how that fight with obi vs anakin would have turned out if that same scene was in force awakens?

The ending of Rogue One was amazing. The amount of actually good fan service in the last 10 minutes was pretty great. I would say even people that aren't huge star wars fans could enjoy a bit of Darth Vader getting cranky, yet The Force Awakens was a much stronger movie altogether. Even though it was a total repeat. TFA brought hope to Star Wars fans and proved that new Star Wars movies aren't total shit. I personally have to give it to The Force Awakens. Thoughts?

Watching TFA again is like watching ANH again, just with better technology and effects. Yet it gives the same feeling of watching a new movie when you watch it the first time, due to new and awesome characters, plot points, and action.

As a movie Force Awakens is definitely better. Rogue One is great for Star Wars fans because of the references and less formuliac tone, but i can't imagine anyone who isn't a fan liking it too much. Force Awakens appeals to both casual viewers and longtime fans without alienating either. TFA also has the better characters, pacing and music.
Rogue One has the better story and action sequences though. I like both movies nonetheless.

As a "long time fan" I can say TFA alienated me.
Rogue One, by contrast, was like a traditional EU book/comic/game just made as a big-budget movie.
Which is to say, Rogue One was the Star Wars film I've been waiting for for a long, long time.

Rogue One. Which is a joy to watch. Thought it on a level with The Empire Strikes Back, and had a strong visceral and physical narrative. It also had a space battle that hits the spot, and surpasses Return of the Jedi air the battle over Coruscant. A thoroughly enjoyable film. The Force Awakens was tired, and shoe-horned people into scenes and scenes into the story, just to get another super weapon destroyed.

As far as the droids go, I only slightly prefer BB-8 to K-2SO, but that's purely because of the former's adorableness. K-2 is definitely a more endearing droid character, hell I almost teared up when he dropped dead.
When it comes to the movies themselves, Rogue One over The Force Awakens any day. How many other Star Wars movies have a space battle as memorable and exhilarating as the battle over Scarif? More than that, Rogue One was marketed as an actual war film, and for the most part that's exactly what we got. The Force Awakens was marketed as something new that we'd never seen before, but a large portion of the film was just a rehash of A New Hope.

I find a story is only as good as it's leading cast of characters. All the characters from rogue one seemed forced as hell stereotypes from other better movies like Divergent, Hunger Games (Main Female Lady), Spy Kids, A bunch of other renegade action movies (The Grizzly dude), LITERALLY ANY KUNG FU MOVIE (you know the guy I am talking about), and tron legacy (basically any of the supporting characters).
Because all these characters had no originality in their writing and had little to no introduction (literally halfway though the movie they were in a tight jam and 2 pedestrians walked in, kicked ass and said "whelp, I guess we are with you guys now" and that's their ENTIRE reason for being in the movie at all. If you think that's bad, then look back to how almost all the other characters were introduced. They were basically all thrown at us out of left field, no ease of entrance what so ever.) mixed with how little almost everyone contributed to the overall plot and alot of forced writing. (Like how she didn't want to be part of the rebellion one moment then like just 2 scenes later she is giving this half ass speech that gives almost no points or tell people why they should risk their lives other then "fuck it guys, this is who we are so lets just do this, who cares about the odds") I gotta say I had no attachment to the story or ESPECIALLY any of the characters.
If you ask me, character introduction is key and the force awakened did it perfectly. That alone makes it better in my mind.
However, the tacked on ending of FAwakened sucked and the ending of R1 was AMAZING!

One of these is a form of good writing, the other is not.
I will say that TFA is a rip-off of older starwars film but it's a rip-off done right. Not everyone likes seeing stuff rehashed but done in a more modern sense and only care about plot and that's fine. I just find that characters should have a more important focus then the plot and the plot should just bent and formed around the will of the main characters' motivations.

I am saying rouge one ripped off character design. By that I mean they are just unoriginal. That's when referring to the characters, When talking about A MOVIE being a rip off, you are normally referring to the plot, which rouge one did not rip off it's plot from anyone, just it's characters. Force Awakened uses the same basic plot from one of the first original trilogy movies with small additions and mixes here and there.
The thing is TFA is the first movie in a trilogy. They can afford to spend an entire movie building up a character and then having him do nothing (Finn and Poe). Rogue One didn't have that luxury and had to both assemble the team and show why they deserved a movie in the first place all in one film. By that same token though, I think opinions on TFA will change once the trilogy is completed. Until the. I definitely preferred Rogue One

R1 is better. No contest really, but the fight is not fair as both have different jobs. R1 is a self contained story that while still adding to the overall story arc, stands complete on its own. FA is just part of a 3 part story and will also have to stand up against the other intro movies in the trilogy's. Apples vs Grapefruit.

Luke's severed hand.

It's not a totally fair comparison. Rogue One is a more satisfying one movie because its story is done, where TFA sets up ep 8. I do think 7 has better characters and 8 will be the best Disney Star Wars movie yet
The Bacons, that's a point too many people miss. TFA is a movie written with the certain knowledge of a sequel (two, in fact). Of COURSE they can spend more time on character development with nothing more than a cursory plot that does little more than introduce the characters.
Rogue One is not a character movie (neither was A New Hope). Both are genre movies: Rogue One is a "war mission" genre, like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Guns of Navarone." It's similar to a "caper" movie like "Oceans Eleven" or "Inception." The characters are less important than the plot. Compare Rogue One to other movies in its genre, and it fits right in.
A New Hope was a different genre as well, a "swashbuckler" or "horse (space) opera," and again the characters are less important than the action. When we first saw A New Hope in 1977, we didn't know much of anything about those characters. Why was a human smuggler travelling with a hairy alien? We didn't know anything about them. An old hermit? Nothing. A farm kid? Horacio Alger--a standard cut-out character. The scrappy princess/rebel? Another cut-out character. The mysterious villain in black? Another swashbuckler cut-out. They were fleshed out by later work, but in 1977 they were all standard swashbuckler cutouts. In 1977 we recognized A New Hope for what it was...and were immensely pleased that it was such a doggoned good swashbuckler.

I saw TFA eleven times at the theatre and Rogue One only once. I never thought I'd get bored with a SW's film (except for the prequels). Looking forward to Ep.8.
