    Rogue One A Star Wars Story saw the return of a stack of fan favourite characters, Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, Princess Leia, Red and Gold Leader in scenes that reflect the original trilogy. But are all of these necessary? Some, definitely, others, weird as hell.

    Vader does make quips in the original trilogy too. "Apology accepted, Captain Needa." Is just an example. Throughout the movies he's always had a pretty dark and sarcastic sense of humor.

    They can recast Mon Mothma because she legit looks like a younger Mon Mothma. We don't see her again until Return on the Jedi which is years later. We see Tarkin like hours later after Rogue One, it'd have been waaay too jarring to use different actors.

      IMO it's all about the mouth when it comes to Tarkin and Leia in Rogue One, Superman (and the infamous mustache) in BvS, and more recently the younger Will Smith in Gemini Man, or a few moments during The Irishman when they de-aged Deniro, Pesci, and Pacino. I can handle it mostly, but when these CGI created models are speaking it doesn't look quite right. The Gemini Man young clone looks fine until it speaks, at which point it ruins the immersion because the mouth looks so unrealistic during speech.
      It's VERY possible to do well, Marvel has shown us that, so it must come down to budget issues or the actual studio and/or artist doing the work.

    Vader has said similar stuff to the "Don't choke on your aspirations" line in the OT. Like in TESB he said "Apology accepted" to Captain Needa after choking him to death. Plus in ROTJ he had that line "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am". Both are clearly examples of Vader's dark humour.

    I would totally dig a Darth Vader movie between revenge of the sith and rouge one, which features the destruction of the Kamino Cloning facility from the comics, and has a plot focusing upon how the emperor convinces Darth Vader to keep fighting for him, after Padme is already dead. Also a proper introduction for Tarkin, since he is treated like we should know him from the prequels in both new hope and rouge one.

      +Relugus I remember on twitter I saw someone who disliked the movie say "you see that Darth Vader pun was what all of Rogue One was like to me" and honestly that makes perfect sense, because that person (like so many) has idolized the original movies some much they have lost complete sight of what they even were like. So many of the criticisms of FA and Rogue One could be easily applied to the original trilogy, but people have this insane idea of what those movies were, to the point that a very similar product is to them a complete bastardization of their beloved franchise.

    We're living in an age where we get so much shit given to us, I think it's spoiled us. We complain about everything. It's crazy.

    • @ErikVaughnDillinger
      @ErikVaughnDillinger Před 7 lety +9

      Exactly, you have to be nitpicking to find flaws. I think for most of that know that Peter is dead and that Carrie is no longer that young we KNOW that those characters are CGI so it makes us look at them very differently than someone who might not know otherwise. I agree with you, the CGI was more than passable. I didn't mind at all.

    • @Animakozak
      @Animakozak Před 7 lety +2

      The CG was for the most part good. It was especially stunning, when they used shadows heavily (shots of the Death Star being complete, Tarkin having half of his face in a shadow) and sometimes ... odd, like the rest shots of Tarkin, Leia and even U-wing taking off to Jedha (which's bugged me right since the first trailer). With last being quite weird. It's freaking ILM, if they take on a project it should be an eye-candy.
      However, I completely disagree about nitpicking the CG. If there is no demand of getting better quality we'll never progress enough to create, for e.g. a compelling virtual reality. You can say so regarding the storytelling, actors' performance but not the technology. It's meant to evolve and develop further.

For me they should have dropped the first Vader monologue with Director Krennic , as Vader was never really big on conversation. It sounded off, he didn't look quite right in stature/his mask. • @victorferger2877
    @victorferger2877 Před 7 lety +9

    To be honest, I thougt too that CGI Leia looked a bit weird. But I think that Tarkin looked stunningly great, after you get used to it in the first two minutes, and also how he looks is extremely unimportant, because his character is fantastic and a great addition! You can sit there and write a five page essay about how unreal he looked and how incorrect his lips were and that he was not so skinny like in ANH OR you can accept that he doesn't look like the Andy Serkis-ape from Planet of the Apes and enjoy the movie, that makes perfect use of him as a character.
    Why? Why not Vader instead of him? He is clearly cheaper than Tarkin's CGI. Yes of course it's cheaper and easier. But it wouldn't make any sense at all, would it? Why? Because Vader is not somebody that's very much in that business thing like Tarkin is, he is not a director or a general or an admiral, he is "Lord" Vader and not "Grand Moff" Vader, Tarkin on the other hand is a grand moff, who's completely in all that business stuff. Also we couldn't have got this rivalry between a boss and someone in a lower rank, and we couldn't have seen how fucking evil Tarkin actually is, I mean yes he blew up Alderaan and everything, but he ordered to destroy a whole city (or planet?) just to test Krennic's weapon and just for why not and to fire at Scarif mainly because Krennic was there and just for why not! And the iconic "You may fire when ready" was fantastic.
    Then the Leia cameo came and I can't imagine why and how the hell these 10 seconds could make so much trouble, it was 10 seconds and she said one word!!! How can so many people already say something like "they ruined her" and "she was so unnecessary", of course she was kind of unnecessary, but why the hell not! They also could have completely leave out Krennic, Jyn and Cassian and all the other people, because they pretty much are sort of unnecessary too, but they didn't because why not! It's not something to argue about, it was there just to be there and didn't do anything big, what's wrong with that!
    The Red five cameo was very cool, to let him die so the spot is free, as this film plays one day before ANH. But I didn't get the Gold and Red leader thing, who are they and why is everybody so excited about them? But anyway, Tarkin was amazing, and it doesn't freaking matter how he looks, it's how they treat him (if he had a lapdance with Krennic and Vader then you could say that, but gladly fortunately he didn't).

      Disney will never do it because it would disrupt the consistency of their universe.
      If they did it, it couldn't contain ANY existing characters.
      It would have to completely break free, in order to establish its own tone.
      Otherwise it doesn't make sense and is super short sighted.
      A videogame can get away with that however

    Thoughts on people saying the cloaked figure in Vader's castle is future Snoke?

      Cult Dun Studios Exactly! Can't say I'd love it if that's what they did. But they seem hell bent on tying everything together, so it wouldn't surprise me. Could even see Vader being responsible for his disfigurement (in a fit of rage after the first Death Star destruction)

      I assumed it was, based on the guy's appearance.
      It's clearly somebody important, otherwise why have him in a scene at all?
      They could have just had one of the red Crayola looking guards come and tell him to get out of the fish tank and put his suit on to meet the Admiral guy.

    Visual effects =/= character
    After all, the Transformers visually look spectacular in the live action films, but they are lousy characters (technically they're not even characters at all). :( Character-wise, I found Tarkin to be just fine. Leia's appearance was a brief cameo, so she had no characterisation in Rogue One.
    Vader does sadistically joke when Force choking Imperials.
    "Don't choke on your ambition, Director Krennic."
    "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
    "Apology accepted, Captain Needa."
    "You have failed me for the last time, Admiral. You are in command now, _Admiral_ Piett."
    ...he's just full of laughs.
    He never jokes when physically or Force choking non-Imperials though (e.g. Padmé, Obi-Wan, Cpt. Antilles etc.).
    P.S.: As for Vader's voice, it's still James Earl Jones, so I'm not sure what people don't like about it considering that it's the same voice.
