I love that Steve was there originally to apologize to Johnathan and talk things out with him, yet in the end he chose to help fight too.
He also cared about Nancy, when he saw the bandage he was willing to fight jonathan again if he did it.

This is still one of my favorite moments on the show. To this day I clearly remember the complete confused shock I felt while thinking "wait, is _Steve_ my favorite character??"
Steve is such a nuanced character man. I remember him being my favourite in season one because he did fit into the 'popular kid' or 'bully' archetype but was written with some depth, rational thinking, morality and vulnerability. This was my favourite scene in s1. My second favourite was Steve telling his so called friends where to shove it after getting his ass whooped by Jonathan. Best character for sure!

Not only is this scene the moment where Steve becomes part of the main cast, but seeing these three fight side by side against what was at the time the main antagonist is such a cool thing tbh
by far my favorite scene in the early seasons.
just began rewatching season 1 with a friend of mine recently and god damn this scene is still so fucking hype.
Jonathan threw that lighter with style. 😂 I always thought he looked super badass/cool in this scene. 🙌
Then later in S02 Steve using Ligther in a undergrown cave burn demons and looks badass doing it...
Jonathan was MVP in season 1 and Will was near the top in season 2. Since then they've both gone downhill lol although Jonathan and Argyle are hilarious

@@marihillestad5486 i rewatched some of season 3 last night and to be fair, Jonathan did do a lot more than I originally thought. He was pretty much one of the main guys attacking the Mind Flayer, was one of the first after Mike to grab El when the Mind Flayer tried to kill her in Hopper's cabin, and tried to get that mind flayer piece out of El's leg
but yeah as a character i think in general, he has stagnated a lot which sucks because he was cool in season 1. Fortunately that did give us time to see the ascension of Steve
@@skippythealien9627 Yup, Jonathan was cool in S01 and S02 but after he becomes weak and boring and Steve becomes cool and good hearted and babysitter too Hawkings Kids and badass... I cant wait see what Will happens too Jonathan in 4x08 and 4x09 if he stay or still with Nancy in end
Everyone keeps asking why the Demogorgan in Russia was so much tougher than the one in this scene, but it's really not that complicated. Animals kept in cruel conditions, in cramped captivity, become wildly more aggressive and deranged than those in the wild. They are much more likely to lash out and attack anything it comes into contact with.

Demogorgans are tanks! The one in S1 was the feral version, the one in S4 is trained to kill
I’d imagine this one was older, thinner and hungrier so it wanted to savour it’s meal. The Russian one was probably consistently fed, and likely was wild. If it couldn’t create a gate back to the Upside-Down like the S1 Demogorgon could, I’d imagine it wasn’t flayed.
Haters: Naaaaah, it's just lazy writing.

The fact that Steve went one-to-one with a demagorgon is so completely cool of him. People love to joke that he gets his ass kicked in fights, but he won against this bad bitch. Especially with how terrifying the demogorgan fight was in Season 4, with Hopper and the other prisoners. The insanity that THAT'S what Steve was up against here, and he did it... and he's just a regular guy and the least prepared of the group. The power of love, man.

When we all that Steve was gonna be a throwaway douchebag character. And now he's arguably the most beloved character in this scene.
When I rewatched the show and saw the scene where Steve is running away from the demogorgon and then turns back to help Nancy and Johnathan it reminded me of Eddie and I started crying 😭😭
The moment Steve went from being nobody's favorite to being everybody's favorite.

Everyone remembers this as Steve's redemption which agreed felt good to watch but THIS scene and the scene that immediately follows by Joyce and Hopper entering the Byers house in the upside side was probably the coolest moments on the show. It gave a glimpse of how the upside down connects with the real world for the first time.

crazy how steve managed to kick the demogorgon’s ass after seeing the one in russia, though that might just be because (getting this from a comment in this video) the demogorgon is independent since the upside down is closed
I'll tell you what, Dutch, in both cases the most important element of the situation was that people had a PLAN and FAITH.
I think they had been training/starving that thing. Hop was talking about keeping a predator sharp. That thing in Russia was ready.

Yeah, the one in Russia was able to tank multiple soldiers dumping assault rifles into it, a comically powerful flamethrower, having Hop empty another gun into it, and then having an arm cut off.
The only in-universe explanation for why three teenagers with a pistol and a baseball bat are able to damage this one has to be that this Demigorgon is much weaker for some reason.
@@ryandubois7419 The one in Russia had been trained against people which is worth mentioning- also for the flamethrower, last AK-47 mag, and swordfight, by that point it had already been controlled/infected by the hivemind particles, so that might impact its capabilities somehow.
i think everyone here in this scene realized Steve was going to be a good character ❤

Steve is everything
I’ve always liked Steve. He always had the right intentions but his actions sometimes weren’t the best. He acted off of impulse and popularity. He also didn’t have a good reputation as the “high school 80’s douche bag jock” he learned from his mistakes. He wasn’t that bad of a boyfriend just had some stupid and douchey moments. Overall he’s still my favorite going into s5

Okay why is this one not as aggressive and wild as the one in Russia? My theory is that the one in Russia is a clone of one they had captured before the gate closed in season 3, its independent from the upside down, nobody is controlling it, its its own animal in the normal world. A wild animal with no master
I guess it's because the season 4 Demogorgon was kept starving and it caused it to be way more determined to catch its prey. Or maybe the season 1 Demogorgon was just older and thus not as agile (it seems probable cuz young Demogorgons in season 2 were also much more aggressive)... Or maybe it's all about Demogorgon's personality. They are not sentient but seem to be pretty intelligent.
@@cannibalseer6064 another reason is that the demogorgon in Russia was trained by killing so many prisoners. It probably killed 100s of prisoners in that very pit. So it knows exactly how to handle humans by now. Look at it this way. The first one was like a private in the army who just started training, while the other one is like a seasoned vet who did 2 tours. Both have the same basic abilities but the later is more experienced than the former. The first demogorgon was stalking knew prey that it didn't fully understand. While the prison one is fully aware of how to fight armed humans because it's done it so many times where now it's a walk in the park for him.

I keep coming back to this because 12 year old me saw this scene for the first time and when Steve did the bat flip I was like "Oh. Oh my. OH MY. That one. I like that one"

One of my favorite scenes in the whole show. For perhaps the first time in its life, this overpowering, incontestable, terrifying BEAST actually gets a push back from its prey! For the entire first season up to now, it has been easy pickings for the Demogorgon. But Nancy, Jonathan, and (in a surprise twist) even Steve change that. They make a statement. They show resolve. They say that the Demogorgon may have strength, but we have smarts and we have each other.
I mean... Will did manage to evade it for a while. And in the semi-canon graphic novel that follows his time stuck in the upside-down, it shows him even shooting the Demogorgon a couple times.
And from this moment Steve became everyone's favorite character.

Steve was supposed to die here, but because the duffer brothers liked his actor so much, they kept him alive and made him the most likable character in the entire series.
Originally I liked Steve, then I disliked him because of how he treated Johnathan, and now this scene is what made me start to like him again.
Jonathan was creepy with his camera...Steve did the right thing in the wrong way....he bought Jonathan a new camera at the end to make up for everything.
@@anyhonywilliams6160 well, while breaking his camera was justified, there's no excuse for how he called jonathan a slur, used his father's abuse to make fun of him then mocked his mother and his missing brother. i'm glad he showed growth after, because after that scene i absolutely hated him and now he's one of my favourite characters ever :')

If he NEVER went back in, we would have never gotten the iconic duo that is Steve and Dustin, Max Dustin and Lucas would be dead at the junkyard, Robin would have never been apart of the group if he never worked with Robin but even if he did Dustin would have never picked up Russian intermissions and never altered Steve which got Robin involved with their world, the whole group could have been injured with Nancy potentially dead in Season 3 as she shoots Billy's car and the group woulda been limited without Steve's help against Vecna's torching in Volume 2. Plus who doesn't love a helping hand down by the homeless shelter when Hawkins was ripped in pieces? STEVE IS HERE TO STAY. Plus after Eddie died, Steve will need to be there for Dustin 100%

I started to like Steve when he defended nancy when Tommy and Carol badmouthing her after the fight.
Instead of getting revenge after beaten up by Jonathan, he realized his mistakes and went to apologize to him.
And then he helped the movie staff to clean up the gravity that T ommy drew.
He could have runnaway after seeing the demogorgon, but he went back inside to help nancy and Jonathan and smacked the Demo with a bat.

Once. He beat the Demogorgon once, and the fight with the Demodogs in the Car Junkyard was more of a tie, since they got called away.

Originally, instead of having Steve help Jonathan and Nancy kill the Demogorgon, the writers were going to have it be Lonnie and he would die. As good as this was for Steve’s character arc to become a more likable person for the show, it would’ve been good to see Lonnie come back for this. I was wondering why we didn’t see him again for this episode when everyone in Hawkins finds out Will’s alive. I wanted to see Lonnie find out he was wrong about Will being dead. And since it was said that Lonnie was supposed to die, I wonder if that meant Lonnie was going to sacrifice himself to save Jonathan so he could actually try to be a good father.
In addition, Steve was originally supposed to die. He wasn’t even supposed to redeem himself. The writers said he was supposed to die a douchebag and no fan would be upset about his death. They said he was supposed to die before this scene actually.
Na, Lonnie was just unredeemable. The dude literally showed up to collect money off his son's death.. someone he never cared about. He was a scumbag. Its cool the writers changed it up because i have a hard time picturing a guy like Lonnie trying to sacrifice himself for his family.
I binge watched this show in 4 days this week for the first time, yet by the end of the first season I completely forgot about Lonnie lol

This scene was a little hard to watch with the flashing lights and stuff. I had to rewatch it multiple times to figure out what’s going on. But this scene was still really impressive.
