Yeah my first time watching stranger things it all made sense why billy was the way he is when I seen the way his dad was to him and it made my heart break seeing him cry.
Not all victims of child abuse turn out like Billy, but most do. And most abusive people come from abusive backgrounds. Which is why those abusive people need to disappear so the world can be a better place and so there are fewer people like Billy and drug addicts etc

it's pretty clear Billy is upset with her getting involved with any kid. If you replace those scenes with Dustin or Will... Billy still would have been mad because he's angry at her getting involved with people in the town. He doesn't want her to get involved and be going out all the time because when she's outside and not at home his dad beats him because the mom gets worried.
Did you miss the part where the mom gets worried when she's out and Billy's dad beats the crap out of him? And he gets very angry knowing that Max lied and went out with the friends. The only reason he targeted Lucas is because Max was seen with her the most if you replace that with Dustin or Will... Billy would have went after them too because that person's influence is the cause for the dad beating Billy.

Actor did an amazing job. Billy is pretty much what comes to mind when I think of the old school type bullies. Oddly charming, athletically talented, knows how to play with your emotions, unstable when shit hits the fan. And above all else, he’s the product of an environment that is unknown in the eyes of almost everyone.

It actually reminds me of a time when I was a missionary and this girl was being harassed by some drunk guys. He is an amazing actor! He's totally unlike Billy irl. Billy isn't really a wasted character, he's a pretty badass antagonist. I don't think he'll be getting development cause Steve was supposed to be like him when the show began but because of Joe he got development and became a heroic character as the show progresses so I don't think they'll do it again it'll be quite repetetive if they do. Billy just adds more to the story.

As much as I hate this character called billy (because I can relate to my brother) I love it because he ended sacrificing himself in the end. Thats what older brother do. Mine would leave me to die in the blink of an eye.
Billy was one of the greatest characters of season 2, being easily the most provocative character by far in my view...Watching his highly unstable, unpredictable temperament, was always a great scene and kept the viewers in a very tense position. There seriously wasn't a single boring or wasted scene with Billy, and the fact that they introduced him with so much mystery to his background was great writing...I can only hope that they deliver a worthy payoff on his character next season, after using all of season 2 building up our curiosity.

The thing is Billy really did care for Max just didn't know how to show it without probably in his mind not looking manly, like when he asked her if Lucas hurt her and wanted to protect her even if it wasn't the best way to do it and when he saw her dressed up for the Snow Ball he knew she was growing up but loves her and ESPECIALLY when he sacrificed his life to save her.

Not sure if Billy is racist or possessive over Max...
Holly I've been thinking the same thing but I was also thinking that maybe their father is racist and if he found out that Max is seeing Lucas then he would be a dick to her too. So maybe he's trying to protect her in some roundabout way but I have no idea.
I think that Billy just wants to protect her but doesn't really know how to do it since he was abused by his father, basically his entire life and doesn't like to show his emotions, so he tries to come off as tough and that he doesn't care.

He's racist; the Duffer brothers confirmed it. I mean he's also possessive over Max and "any way he can torment her" (per the Duffers) he'll use, but he's also racist and they said they wanted to show how a "character like Billy" would react to an interracial relationship. Plus, I mean, what else could a "certain type of person" that must be avoided mean given Billy's never spoken with him/doesn't even know his name?
I think he’s racist and controlling because he has zero control over his own life. It’s the cycle of abuse. He’s abused so he abuses Max.

It’s just funny cuz when I first saw stranger things Max and Billy’s sister and brother relationship reminded me of my relationship with my older brother a couple years back, and how Billy cares for Max in the end reminds me a lot of my brother now.

ReReVerSal But that action would only caused her reaction to be shocked for a moment. Which makes the shocked expression more real. After that is another thing and I would say that’s great acting right there. Scared but then at the same time have to hold it in. It’s like you can see what it’s like being yelled at by an older sibling or emotionally abused. You can pretty much see the fragile side of Max character which pretty have been known to be more strong and badass.
