As much as this episode showed how impressionable Eleven still is, I definitely think Max helped her start to define herself, and that's something she sorely needed.

Tbh I didn't understand Max's petty toward Mike when I first watched season 3...until I did a series rewatch before season 4- the perfect payback: stealing your girlfriend and being besties. I know Mike was cold because he was depressed and El was jealous, but I'm still so amused by the end result. Female friendships are precious.

One of the more regrettable things about El being separated from the other kids throughout almost all of season 2 is that she's rather cold to Max when they finally meet in the finale, and yet the two are like best friends by the start of season 3.
Which means El making friends with another girl her age for the first time happened entirely off-screen.
