Welcome to Southwest and Midwest Design & Construction's featured project video! Join us as we embark on a remarkable journey in building an apartment complex in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Inuvik, known as the 'gateway' to the Western Arctic, is a vibrant town with a rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural surroundings. Our team, new to apartment envelope design and interior fitting in this region, embraced the adventure and worked closely with the local community to bring this project to life.
Phase One of the project began in February 2020, and we anticipate its completion in February 2023. The apartment building will feature 17 standard rental units, each with 2 to 3 bedrooms, spanning a total of 27,000 square feet. Our dedicated design team collaborated with BEHLEN Industries to construct the steel structure, while IDC Construction played a crucial role in the joint construction venture agreement.
Phase Two of the project involved the interior fitting, which included mechanical and electrical systems, ceiling installation, flooring, and other essential elements to ensure the building's readiness for occupancy. The interior fit construction took place simultaneously with the envelope structure, as the extreme arctic climate prevented exterior work during the winter months.
Our project management team made monthly trips to Inuvik to ensure smooth progress on the ground, working closely with local site superintendents. Building in arctic communities presents unique challenges, such as constructing on steel piles due to the permafrost, the frozen ground found in northern Canada.
The contract award process for this project relied on our longstanding relationship with IDC Construction, our experience in arctic conditions, and our expertise in designing structures tailored to the arctic climate. We are proud to have been entrusted with both the envelope structure and interior fit portions of the project.
