I borrow a lot from the library. It’s nice to see you promoting that. When I find a really good one, I will buy it for my shelves. It’s a good way to save money and to only fill my shelves with my favorites. :)

Even though I really love reading, I only have five books on my bookshelf because books are a bit expensive here in Brazil, so I can relate to this too.

Bravo, Helene, for using your library! And your "ramble ramble ramble" video is perfect! What is most interesting is what you say about the books you are reading... and why you like them. Owning a book has its decided pleasures... yes!... but in the end it is the content within them that lifts our spirits, or depresses them, teaches us or just plain entertains us. Thank you for your insights and keep doing your videos in whatever way suits you.

I love the library and the fact that it gives people a free space to hang out and read. It's also just not sustainable for me, as a graduate student, to purchase every single book I want to read. I do buy a book or two every few months. It's a nice treat for myself!

I am so interested in discovering more European books and I thank you for mentioning Cathedral of the Sea and They were Counted. These sound very interesting. I too struggle with keeping up with books from the library as well as my own lists of books and books that I own. Frankly, it is a happy problem to have!

I hope you find more inspiration for your videos, but sometimes a good reset is needed, I like that you reminded yourself why you started your channel and went back to your roots! I try to check my library for certain books I want to read before buying them, too. I’ve started being really deliberate about my book-buying habits, and I now usually buy books that I’ve read many times before and love, or books I have done a lot of research on and know for a fact I will probably enjoy it.

    Hello ☺
Glad ur not bowing down to the booktube pressure of buying books because to be honest it gets boring watching everyone rant on about the same author/books.
I support my local library because they dont get much help from the local council and threated to be shut down 😢 so i reserve books/d.v.ds and pay a few quid to help out.
Im reading " The Slap " by Christos Tsiolkas. Its good but confussing so many charectors to track.
Are u geting Zues a xmas presant? In the UK there is a drink for cats/dogs called Pawsecco lol prosecco for ur pets .
See u soon and have a nice xmas 🎄

Ildefonso Falcones is spanish and a great expert on religious subjects. The book you borrowed from your father is Cathedral of the Sea. I still have to read that, as we are neighbouring countries and i know a lot of Spanish history - i am from Portugal. I have read this year, and by this author The Hand of Fatima and was amaizing!
I have also read A Gentleman in Moscow this year and what a stunning book. And character. I want to read that one as well.

Glad to hear you're finding a reading routine that brings you joy! I read My Year of Rest and Relaxation a few months back and I did enjoy it, and found it very reminiscent of the spirit of the 90's...that grungy, drug fueled, stream of consciousness type thing lol. I LOVE Sarah Waters and The Night Watch is on my TBR shelf (it is the only one of hers I haven't read yet). Fingersmith, Affinity, and Tipping the Velvet are some of my all time favorite books, but I didn't really care for The Paying Guests or The Little Stranger (although I still enjoyed them because she's just THAT GOOD of a writer). I always check my library first for books I'd like to read but not necessarily own. That being said, I still do purchase a lot of books. I don't feel pressure to read them right away because I figure I have a whole lifetime to read them and it's nice to know I have a personal library to choose from.

I hear you loud and clear, Helene. For years I've had the situation of having so many unread books that they're a source of stress rather than enjoyment yet I really want to read them. Then I encounter still more books I want to read and some of them I can get for free at Little Free Libraries and such. I have to make self-discipline a part of my reading life: make more time for reading what I have and stay away from sources of new books.---I agree with you about using the library. Today I'm getting a book I reserved, a 2016 biography of Shirley Jackson who wrote "The Haunting of Hill House".

I am excited about The Fifth Season, which is waiting for me at the library. I'm a big library user myself, and while it has its downsides (extremely long waiting time for very popular books, unavailability of some books), it's such a great resource.
