Why I Want To Stop Watching The News

  • I check the news a lot. It’s a habit I feel has spiraled out of control.
If I really got something out of it, I wouldn’t be making this video. But I don’t. It’s the opposite. In a brief moment of mental clarity, I ask myself: Why am I reading this? Why do I need to know this?
The obvious answer is: to stay informed about what’s going on in the world! What if I miss something important?
But that answer is flawed. What you see on the news is not an accurate representation of the current state of the world. How could it be? That would be boring...
I get it. Bad news sells. According to recent statistics, right here right now is literally the best time we could possibly be alive. Yet, from watching the news, I consistently get the impression that the world is doomed or on the verge of ending.
And I’ve noticed it distracts me from doing what I really care about. Working on my business, trying to make sense of life, deep work.
In his book ‘Indistractable’, Nir Eyal writes that the opposite of distraction is ‘traction’, which he defines as “any action that moves you toward what you really want.”
When I think of it that way, what I should be doing is so clear…

“The sooner you understand that the news is as dangerous as alcohol or drugs, the faster you’ll get rid of this, at first glance, harmless habit.”
“The only good argument I've heard for paying attention to the news is that I might miss something really important. If it's really important someone will tell you. I didn't find out about the 9/11 attacks from the news; I found out from a neighbor. If shit really hits the fan, someone will tell you. Otherwise you're better off remaining in the dark. Not because the world doesn't matter, but because just listening to the news is a crappy way to change it.”

I'm from Ukraine, my family is still there, though. From February until April, average daily screen time on my phone was 13 hours.
My eyesight degraded noticeably because of that and my eyes were hurting. Also sleep time has shrank to 4-6 hours.
I've understood since then, that sometimes it's really necessary to stay in touch with the world, but till the point it starts physically and mentally destroying you.
Knowing information gives you an illusion of control, while in reality, you have a very less impact.
Currently, I'm checking the most important events just twice a day in limited amount of time. Also getting info mostly from official sources helping it much.
That makes it easier to make decisions regarding my family or decide if I can actually impact something.
Feeling much better by consuming information with such strategy!
Thanks for your videos! I love them all 🙏

That must be so hard! I'm not from Ukraine, but even I was checking the news compulsively during those months. Actually I had already made this video back then but felt it wasn't appropriate to publish. But I decided to publish it now because I'm not sure if it's ever appropriate for every person possibly watching. And I think what you said is really profound: "Knowing information gives you an illusion of control, while in reality, you have a very less impact." I think your strategy is a great one. To stay informed but at the same time set boundaries to keep balance and not get completely sucked in 24/7.

I stopped watching news years ago, because I realized the news is not always the real portrait of the actual conditions. It's more of a tool to herd opinions. If it's really important, I will somehow get it from somebody, and If it really matters to me, then I will start looking for deeper information, not just some random news. I learnt that in life, it is sometimes better to be a bit ignorant. It's more peaceful and enjoyable.

Hi Pete , your video wasn't a rant at all. It should be a wake up call for us all. I too was checking the news far too much and I identify with the question of 'Why am I reading this?'. I love your observation of the news reader saying good evening then giving out nothing other than bad news. I am on a mission to stop reading the news but I still tune in if there is something I really am wanting to know about such as the rescue of children. I am going to try and stop reading the news on my phone for a month too, thank you for your tips. During Covid it seemed as if all British people were obsessed with the number of deaths and what Boris and the team had to say every evening. Covid was all the discussions I read on FB. I made a conscious effort to find a positive post every day to offset the doom and gloom. I tried not to be glib because I was aware of the local people around me with Covid but I couldn't let it drive my mental health down either. Anyway a month ago I decided I was getting too addicted to FB, I enjoyed following a local History page and it was my excuse to log in every evening. Of course this led to 'checking in with friends' and then the deadly Games section. I decided to move the FB Icon to the very last Icon on my phone to resist the easy click on and visual reminder. I went cold turkey for 3 weeks and I felt all the better for it. I then made a rule that I would look only at the local history page. This worked for a few days before I 'Checked in with friends' . I noticed that none of my friends had actually posted anything of value, just holiday , happy family and restaurant dining photo's. Do I really need to know what they are doing every day of the week? No. I guess if it's anything important they will let me know. So I am going back not logging in. Wish me luck in banning my news reading on the phone! Thank you Peter for your valuable support in following all aspects of Slow Living

  • @valerievanessavictoria5084

I’m not sure if this is a thing globally, but in the Philippines, tuning in to the 6-6:30 PM news is a habit for most families/households. It’s when everyone gathers around the tv, regardless of what you’re doing. When I was young, I hated it because it meant my parents would be home soon and that I’d have to stop watching cartoons. But I am naturally a curious person growing up so I also developed the habit of watching news. Now that I am older and having worked in corp comm, I learned that news angles can be twisted and reporting can be biased so I no longer take it too seriously, otherwise it’s another form of stress and distraction that I don’t need. Don’t worry, I am completely with you on your rant!

Ps- if you are checking too much, you are not in touch with yourself and with silence. Just use positive channels on CZcams, you always get the answers in the feed, and you learn much more than seeing caos. It's the only network I use now. PS I used to be like that and I stopped it, now I have much more free time, and rest. News can be addictive to those who actually value knowledge, I used to spend hours in Google feed, seeing science and technology and ecology sites. And sending suggestions to companies, some were implemented.yet now I blocked it all, and I am more connected to myself, taking better care of myself and using my intuition as guidance, so if I still have something meaningful or insight to send to companies or idea I just make a quick Google search, and then drop an email to the companies, no need to be checking the sites all the time. The news is designed to suck you in like this, usually through techniques you'd never notice but that equate to soft mind control, and is so filled with fear-based stories that you don't even realize are driving your body into a state that you'll even deny exists. Let me tell you, as a former news monger, my demeanor has changed quite a bit only from deciding not to be any part of it any longer. And despite not watching it at all any longer, if it's an important event that's happened, I always hear of it somewhere but then I have a chance to investigate it on my own terms instead of on the terms that are set up by the news agencies to help induce that fear in you that you'd never notice for one and, if you do, will fully deny until your body literally starts physically showing you the outward signs of what's been introduced to it through watching the very news you believe you depend on. After giving it up completely about 6 years ago, I can tell you it's easy to notice the fear and anxiety that it does pump your mind full of when you're a regular consumer of it. Then you can always make YOUR own decisions in how you get there news that's important to you. Makes a huge difference in your ability to live your time on only your own direction, instead of the direction that's being introduced to you and your mind. Add far as im concerned, anyone who asks me how to change their life, I tell them to start with your relationship to TV, movies, AND the internet. First, your mind will change but following that, your body and its responses will become far more varied than it was from having these things fill too much of your time. Only you can decide for yourself however, how much, if any, of your time should be spent with these things. Just be very careful for awhile not to let it suck you back into its cycle that it will, if you're not watchful.

Good luck with your experiment, Peter! Speaking from my own experience, I think doing a 1-month break is a great way to start, perhaps let some people close to you know so they can inform you of any major things in the news that you would want to be informed about. And after that, you could reevaluate. After I did my 1-month experiment of not checking the news, I've found it quite easy to keep going. But, like you, I do want to stay informed, at a high level overview at least. So maybe I'll check a news site briefly once or a few times per month. My behavior is different now, though. I may see clickbaity headlines but feel less inclined to click them. It's almost as if being on the site confirms why I don't want to check it daily. If I read something, it's the long-read analysis that I'm more drawn to. I'm rooting for you, Peter (great name btw 😉)!

Yeah so I went cold turkey and didn't check the news for a month. It was surprisingly easy! I'd say the one big event was the Queen passing, and that news came to me from many different people. Some other things in the news people shared with me I felt like I would not have mind not even hearing about (like a celebrity doing something stupid). I then checked the news after the month was over, and noticed I had definitely lost my appetite for it. I scanned some headlines, noticed not much big had really happened in a month, which was quite insightful. Now, a couple of weeks later, I've still hardly checked any news. Going forward, I may check it once a week, to stay informed, but that's gonna be it. Maybe I'll do another video about it, say one year from, about my experience of not checking the news for a year. 😀

I don't listen to the news for the same reasons you don't. I am in Greece however and our news are super argumetative, and loud. If they could discuss an issue listening to the news would be good on the nerves and give us some knowledge,
not going around in circles to no purpose or logic or solution to real problems.

    • @IAmPeterCook

That sounds exhausting, Bessie. I'm on the same page. I do want to stay informed about the big things that happen in the world, that have a great impact on the world. But a lot of what's on the daily news is forgotten tomorrow, including all the opinions about it. If I think back to some things that were discussed in the news 3 years ago, I often think: what was all that fuss about?

You may want to use app and site blockers, for that. You may want to check you fears, - checking the news all the time it's about fear, and control. Maybe you have fear that you cannot keep a conversation with people, not knowing what is happening, and that is fear. It's not good to check the news all the time, you will always know, from a neighbor or someone, or on CZcams. No need to check all the time, it's like the home, it should be simple, the inside.

I have the same problem which I've been trying to control since a few weeks ago. I ask myself why do I need to know so much? Is it worth all the time it takes away from important things? My conclusions always lead me to much less news time. I was using news to keep every moment exciting at the expense of my own priorities. That's like taking a drug. I'm working on checking the news no more than 20 minutes a day, and only read past a headline if it's really necessary, which it rarely is. The key difference now is I don't follow news for entertainment or stimulation, I'm only interested in the very important news, not somewhat important, not just interesting or intriguing.

Great questions to ask yourself, Ford! My thought process was very similar and led me to making this video. So I did a hard stop, cold turkey, on checking the news. Didn't check it at all for a month. And then, after 30 days, I checked again. I realized: I didn't miss much. And I also found the pull to check the news a lot had reduced greatly, if not disappeared completely. Will see if this will last, but so far (almost 1 month after the end of my experiment), I've still hardly checked the news. I do so maybe once a week to stay informed, and find that that is more than enough. Good luck, Ford! 🙌🏻

I check the news maybe once a week or every other week for a minute, just to stay informed of the big things. Are you really slow living though? Having a full time job, cooking, cleaning and making all these videos requires a ton of work. Cameras, lights, micros phones, retakes and then the mighty editing, seems stressful.. and then constantly looking at the number of subscribers you have - lol - why don’t you just turn off more things and really take it easy… slow down further.

    • @IAmPeterCook
      @IAmPeterCook  Před rokem +2

Good point, Yonathan. 😉 I started this channel to share what I was learning about slow living and minimalism, to inspire others and also myself. The irony is not lost on me that, as a result of making these videos, I'm not living as slowly as I otherwise could be. But I ultimately want to live a purposeful life, and making these videos feels meaningful. My ambition is not to do nothing all day. To me, slow living and minimalism are tools to live with intention. It's indeed complicated with a full-time job, I do want to change that in the future. Perhaps when the channel grows bigger. Hope that makes sense. 🙂
