    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 4 lety +2

      Awesome, that major seemed really cool! The minor is not too in difficult to manage. I don't think it requires you to take as many math/ science classes as prereqs. You get to take more fun elective CM classes that don't have a super heavy work load.

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety +11

      At cal poly we had to go to Calc 2. I failed Calc 1 the first time and joined a study group which helped me sooo much. Also try finding a good professor at your university, that made a huge difference for me. At my job so far, anything more than simple math is not something I do in day to day activities.

    • @111Econ
      @111Econ Před 3 lety +2

      @@EricaZetterquist you don’t use calculus on construction sites but you will use a lot of maths to quantify materials. And some understanding of mechanics is required as you’ll be building structures.

      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety +1

      If you are looking to be a project manager, you should apply to construction companies as a project engineer ( from there you can work up to being a project manager) you’re major in civil engineering is great and you should easily be able to get a job with that degree!

  • @kule510
    @kule510 Před 3 lety

    What made you go CM and NOT engineering??? Most places in the public sector require you to be an engineer to be a project manager.

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety +7

      Interesting I didn’t know that but even tho the public sector gives a lot of job security, I don’t know anyone who prefers working in public works over doing commercial or residential. Even though construction management does include some engineering classes, it mixes business and the management side of construction that an engineering major doesn’t. An engineering major would have been way too difficult for me to be honest but I have a friend who was a civil engineer major and now working as a project engineer and he feels really unprepared. If you’re going into the project management side, the technical stuff is good background but you’ll have to get all the info and plans from a certified engineer anyways. From what I’ve seen, the job is way more about reading plans, communication, document control and organization.

      Depending on where you’re working but in California you’ll most likely make over $75k right out of college. I think 5-10 years of experience you’d made somewhere in the mid $100k.

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 2 lety

      I've always had a passion for architecture/ design but didn't have any experience for an architecture program (the arch program at Cal poly is super competitive and students get experience in high school or other programs before they even start college). It was really just something I applied for because I had some interest in it and it just worked out. It wasn't something I was super set on and even through my time at Cal Poly I considered switching. The biggest benefits to me were that Cal Poly Construction Management students have tooonnnns of opportunities to find internships/ jobs which was super important and valuable to me.

    • @EricaZetterquist

      Hey, I'm not too familiar with any masters programs but I'm guessing Construction Management and Project Management courses would be pretty similar. Since you already have a background in Civil Engineering I'm sure it'll be easier than that. I've heard most CM master programs teach more about softwares like autocad, bluebeam, navisworks, procore, etc.

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 4 lety +1

      I felt like i didn't know anything about construction. We spent a lot of time on math problems to do with foundations and roofing which really confused me. It brushes you up on a lot of geometry and conversions of measurements. Honestly most of the problems we had to do in hand but in the real world you would easily input into a computer to get the answer. I also really didn't know how foundations were constructed (footing and stem wall) which I have a general understanding for now but I freaked out thinking I would be horrible at construction because I lacked a lot of technical knowledge.

    • @rubycruz4244
      @rubycruz4244 Před 4 lety
