  • David and I are both working as Project Engineers after graduating from Cal Poly with degrees in Construction Management. Even though we are both in the same position, we have different daily tasks and responsibilities. I asked David to share his experience because he has had a typical role where my role is more unique to the job I am working on. Let us know if you have more questions about the job or industry!

    Im about to start training for a project engineer position soon, this helped a lot to foreshadow the job.

    Can make a video about how your document control typically work for each of you? I feel like this changes from company to company but still nice to hear how it’s working for others!

    Construction Project Engineer here.. my biggest challenge is starting a new project with a new pm and super who never worked with a pe before.. they don't want to relinquish any of their traditional responsibilities as they come from a purely residential background and now working in multi family.

      Yeah that’s difficult :( your project team definitely makes or breaks a job since you all work so closely together through the process. Just from the size of a multi family project vs a residential project, they will eventually have to give up some of their power and need your help. It’s a lot easier to keep track of things on a residential project verses multifamily.

    Hi! How did you show your interest for CM when you applied? I’m not really sure what subjects and electives to take in high school rn. It’d be really really cool if I got in to Cal Poly for CM

      Hey! You have to declare a major when you apply to cal poly so I put construction management!

    I’m thinking about going to school for my associate degree in construction management. I have a small amount of experience in the construction field but not much. Would you happen to know if an associate degree would open any doors in your field?

      Yes I definitely think so! A good start might be to look into some local internships for a construction project engineer. Then you can talk with a company about it an associates degree would be enough for them to hire you full time.

    Hello, fellow Project Engineer here! I am curious what both your your takes are on the hours in which you work. Off the bat it sounds like you guys have fairly limited roles on your project so that alone may help. I find myself often putting in 50 hour weeks which has been getting pretty draining. How are you dealing with the long hours?

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety

      David definitely works 45-50 hour weeks. I have a more limited role and the company I work for has a great work life balance culture so that really helps. I know if you work for a large constructuction company it can be common to be overworked as a project engineer.
