Toyota JZ vs Chevy LS -- which engine is better?
Vložit
- čas přidán 13. 06. 2024
- The JZ and LS based engines are two of the world's most popular choices for swaps and tuning. The 2JZ out of the Supra holds boost like nothing else, and the LS1, LS6, LT1, LT2, and LS7 from the corvette have all made good power. But these motors also came in cars like the Aristo and the Silverado. They also get swapped into 240sx, M3’s, and even mini coopers! But which one is the best? This video is where you find out.
Versus put two automotive giants toe to toe and Joey Rassool tallies up points to see who is the victor. Anything from heritage, performance, and even availability are taken into consideration.

Two totally different sounding motors. But a boosted LS means business. A 2JZ is no slouch. But, in all honest. Sound and flex aside. A booster LS is the way to go in America. More power capability’s, shockingly more reliable cheaper to mod and more access to parts.

The small block 350 was literally the LS1 before the LS1. The only thing they changed is the mapping for the block cast for better flow. That's it. And immediately picked up 20% more power and torque
No it wasn’t
Not quite. The 350s where iron blocks, less efficient heads, some lower and some higher compression.
The ls1 is technically 346 cubes. And a third gen small block.
The small block 350 closest cousin from another mother is the 305 L69 HO out of the Monte SS. You can turn one into the 350 with a little effort by putting the head of the 350 to the 305 block with a little mod.
“LS has a notorious short deck, and if you’re going to put in a crank from a larger engine...”
Someone didn’t do their homework.
All LS engines have the same stroke with only 2 exceptions... the 4.8L has a shorter stroke (exact same block as the 5.3L) and the 7L LS7 has a longer stroke. .. but no one uses LS7 cranks, only aftermarket.
Which moves onto the next point:
It’s not the “short deck” that’s the issue. It’s the cylinders don’t extend deep into factory iron blocks, so the piston skirts extend out more than desired. Stroker cranks still work in those iron blocks, but they don’t have as much longevity. Aluminum blocks have less issues with such things since their sleeves extend deeper into the block, giving the piston skirts more support.
Also, he brought up the LSX376, a boost ready crate engine with the cast LSX block that’s rated to handle 2500hp.
And for stock bottom end strength, Richard Holdener has done hordes of torture dyno tests stressing completely stock junkyard shortblocks, adding cam/heads/turbo and making 1200+hp from a 4.8L and 1600hp from a 6L... and they were still good to go higher.
Power Auto Media did a video about a company that is famous for LS engine builds, and one for Coyote builds and put them head to head in a $15000 or so (I havent seen the video in a while) contest. SPOILERS - the LS engine use an lsx block with their build techniques and a pro charger that put 1700hp to the crank, and the only reason why it failed was a head gasket, and they had troubles with belt slip. I'm not saying the didnt do their research, but they definitely didnt go deep enough into it. You're right in your comment of LS engines can hold a lot more than they're saying.

I know it's cheating because it means swapping the block and crank, but I lust after one of those JZ based V12s. I remember seeing one like ten years ago that used a 90° billet aluminum block and forged steel crankshaft with factory heads, pistons, and connecting rods that weighed about the same as the factory iron block engines. It was obviously wider than a stock JZ and probably can't handle as much boost, but if you could get it to fit, the exhaust note was magical. I personally want to build one based on the single turbo 1JZ-GTE (possibly with FSE direct injection heads) to make a 5.0 liter twin turbo V12. I just don't have the money, or a suitable car to put it in.🤣😭

Inline 6 and V8 my favorite engine layouts
14:31 It's true that the GTE is a non interference engine, but the GE ( NA) ones are, especially with the VVTi
2JZ-GTE with and without VVTi are non-interference
the 2JZ-GE VVTI is interference (also weaker internals)
but the non vvti GE is also not interference, and had the same beefy and thicker rods and bottom end as the GTE minus the compression ratio difference, it's good for easy 600 whp unopened block as long as tuning is done right, and using E85 to keep the 10.1:1 Compression Ratio
Damn I see why people LS swapping the world,
Well I mean the engines were already in a lotta cars.

Australians watch this channel too, you know!
Give us an episode on the Barra powered XR6T!!!!
Fucken oath, barra would beat JZ anyday
they should do commodore vs falcon, thatd be sick
Probably a Australian car video would be more likely.
And the sohc intech
Barra is trash Ahahah
Donut: “it’s not like there’s a JZ Jaboree or anything” Literally everyone “GREG, GET ON THAT”
As an LS fan I wouldn't mind mind a 2JZ fest at all
Write that down, WRITE THAT DOWN.
Both motor seem pretty awesome! Ya should do one about the Honda/Acura engine. B and K series.. It is like one of the most popular JDM engine out there. I'm not saying it is better then a JZ or LS.. just think it will be a good vid to watch
Can we get the same rundown on the last gen rx7 rotary? That would be sick
bottom line, these are 2 sick engines.
Yeah, put the rivalry aside, can’t we all just get along?
Amen
Day 130 of asking James to do an Up to speed on his Dad
I second this request! Mo Powah baby!
130 days I don’t think he wants to talk about it
I sign this petition
Watch the BMW list video. He talked about what happened to his dad
Day 131 of liking this comment
Ls fest is like a forza horizon festival site 😂😂
Still praying for them to do an in depth on the H22A4 engine one day 😭
Some dudes made over 1000 hp by boosting a stock iron block "LS" Silverado that clocked at least 500K miles before tuning.
They made a 2.2 cavalier handle 1200 hp on stock internals
Maybe so, but it probably only made that power once before it blew. Stock LS engines just will not hold that power. You need a built bottom end, damn good gas, and a great tune.
Thats cute, coyotes hold 1k hp stock engines.
@@WastdTrashPanda well it didn't. Although I butchered some details in my original comment. It was a Colorado with junkyard 6.0 that clocked 250K miles before being boosted by Sloppy Mechanics to 1000+ rwhp and even raced to 9.78 at 143 mph in 1/4 mile.
"sOmE dUdEs"
You guys should do an up to speed episode for Factory Five Racing
I have a feeling these guys don't know what that is lol ..... But yeah they should do it!!!
Hell yes!!
Ruby had a 5.3 leroy never did would just like to point that out
Absolutely!!!
Hello new face! Welcome to the Donut Media youtube channel! :D
Y’all need to do some videos of the jetski scene lol
This was much less impartial than the others, good on ya donut. Tho I feel the 2j is just as good tho I am a GM boy!
It's all about application right ?
Maybe look up "impartial" in the dictionary? You mean much more impartial.
Donut guys aren’t shy about being JDM fanboys. So, yes... good for Donut for going beyond their bias.
Both are great for big power builds, I'd use the LS simply for weight savings over the 2J though... That's just me though...
Yeah I agree this vid was alot better. But yeah I'm thinking the users preference plays a big part since both the pros and cons of each engine kinda cancel the other out lol
I’ll reiterate as I have in other videos. Whether you agree or not, just appreciate the information. We should expect subjectivity as it’s a subjective subject.
Nobody:
Supra guys: Did he say 2JZ?
All i can hear with that Did he just say 2jz text is james saying it
Russian mark 2 guys
2jz = gay
1jz = god

Seen the JZ Camaro, looking for LS Supra. Edit: Found It.
The 2JZ NA was used in the US lexus SC300, IS300, and the GS300 up until 2005.
