You wanna make one really really shiny? Tractor Supply has a paint branded "Majic". It's a pain in the butt to get right, follow the directions to a tee or it will run or bubble on recoats but OMG it does shine when done right. It comes in spray or cans for mixing for spray gun use and a hardener is available. I just finished a 1952 Bolens Power Ho in Oliver Green and it shines like 3 stage automobile paint.
Awesome and thanks for the info I will have to check it out next time I go there
How has that Majic worked with the heat of the lantern???
@@VelveteenRabbit77 I run mine low, never at maximum light. Nothing has peeled or discolored much. I'd call it durable.
@@paulhare662 Thanks!
I have Winged Wheel 350 that I found. I started cleaning it and the paint was chipping. I wire wheeled it and took a lot of the paint off. I spray primed it and hit it with Rust-Oleum gloss and sprayed it quickly to give it a satin finish instead of gloss. I used high heat black and then Rust-Oleum gloss black and used that on the chimney, cap and metal loop along with the ring that hooks onto the globe plate and the burner.
The whole thing is drying and in a couple days I will assemble everything. I don't plan on using it a lot but did it more of a show lantern.
Wow that’s going to look amazing I’m sure 👍
@@lotsatrains I'll send you a photo of it when I'm done

I just finish my first one, am embury 160 my wife wanted it silver. A garbage pick. 5 coats of paint to remove green, silver, white, green, and finally brown. I took it apart for paint removal. I painted most of the parts seperatly. I did put the cap back on the chimny so paint the wouldn't flake off when I bent the tabs back down. I also painted the bottom first and let it dry. Then i set it on a flower pot and painted the rest.
Sounds great 👍
Mooie Coolos!😊
Thanks 🙏
I plan on using 2000 deg F high heat grill paint on mine.
The hard part is sealing the holes in the bottom and removing all the rust and old paint.
Yes that’s good paint 👍 and sometimes it can be very frustrating to get them to seal up and I had a few that I almost gave up on but stuck with it and eventually got it just have to use the Who’s the boss method sometimes 😂
Yes a nice looking paint job on the lantern! 🙂🙂 Yup painting my # 40 Dietz traffic gard lantern hunter green, just to have a different looking lantern & with the red globe will make it look cool! Gotta wait for spring to paint the lantern! 🙂🙂
Thank you for making a video like this
And that lantern looks great
You are very welcome and thanks for your kind comments
Hey Ken that colour really does look good.Looking forward to seeing the Pagoma with a fresh wick a globe and its first light up in its brand new paint job.
Thanks so much will do a light up in the next video stay tuned.
thanks Ken! another great video
You are very welcome thanks for watching.
Looks great Ken!
Thanks so much I just discovered a leak that needs to be fixed now but I think it will be ok
Thanks for making this.
You’re welcome thanks for watching
Great video! Just bought a couple of old traffic lanterns off eBay that i'm going to repaint - thanks for the tips!
Thanks for watching your very welcome
Hi mate , love you passion for these old lamps , keep up those videos 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much and so great to hear from you Down Under 👍
Beautiful colour. 😊
Thanks so much 👍
Very nice Ken! Looks great!
Thanks for that!
Looks great 👍
Thanks so much
Great video!
Thank You
How You going Ken. Nice work. I just picked up 11 lanterns. And a Cambrian miners lamp with papers. Made in Wales 1982. Very happy with four Dietz lanterns. One's the brass/copper model 50. All the best Ken
Wow that’s a great collection of lanterns that you just got! That miners lamp sounds very interesting too great to hear from you and wish you well!
Looks great Ken ! How does the Krylon do with the heat ? I use VHT engine block enamel on mine, high temp stuff. I clear coated my Kirkman's Champ No.2, and a Feuerhand 276 with it, and even though its high temp, the crowns discolored from the heat. It looks cool though. Reminds me of when guys would spray oil on the chrome sidepipes of an old vette, or cobra. ;)
Thanks Matt it usually hold up very well to the heat in fact I only have one lantern that actually discolored on the crown and that was painted a very long time ago and I actually don’t remember the brand of paint but all of my other ones are fine.
If using rustoleum in any humidity let it tack up 10 minutes then shoot it wit a light coat of clear then with in 10 minutes clear it till Shiney. The clear shortens the drying time of the paint you can handle it with in an hour
Thanks that’s so awesome I never knew that and sure will give that a try 👍
Hi, Ken. General question. How do you clean up your lanterns using a scotchguard pad (green)?
I have a couple lanterns with light surface rust. I gave them a bath in dish soap and water. Then wiped them down with lubricant. The I lightly sanded them using a dry scotchguard scrubbing pad (green). The results look a lot better but there is still some rust. And I don’t mind it, but should I go any further?
Do you have any recommendations?
I usually wet the pad with wd40 and scrub with it wet then a little wipe with a soft cloth leaving a little wd40 behind to dry on its own also probably will notice the soft cloth picking up the rust residue from the lantern. That’s what I do if the lantern just had minor surface rust but if it’s heavily rusted I use rustoleum gel rust remover.
@@lotsatrains okay, I’ll probably go over it once more with lubricant on a new scrub pad. It couldn’t hurt. Thanks.
Question. How does these various paints hold up to exposure of Kerosene? Asking because Kerosene is sometimes used as a thinner or paint remover. Will it damage the finish?
I haven’t had any problems with it so far and amazingly holds up to the heat when burning them too but I only use good name brands like Krylon and Rustoleum.
That's a good looking lantern. I'm a newbie at oil lanterns and looking to buy an old U.S. made Dietz Air Pilot to restore. Do you have any tips for me before I buy one? Does the paint burn very bad when you light painted lanterns? Thanks for sharing your painting system.
I use either Krylon or Rustoleum spray paint and they seem to hold up very well with heat and as far as for buying lanterns I usually just try to make sure that they have all their parts. Not that you can’t get replacement parts but they tend to be pretty expensive these days and make sure that the lantern is not rusty though.
@@lotsatrains Thanks. What do you think about the newer Chinese-made Dietz lanterns? Are they any good?
@@darkhelmetsplane yes they are pretty good although a little less robust than their original ones.
@@lotsatrains Is the metal and glass thinner? I'm on a strict budget and tossing between an old USA Air Pilot on eBay which might need some work (a few rust spots), and a new Chinese Air Pilot on Amazon. Same price. I want something which will be durable, not leak and be dependable for my family in the long run. I've read so many horror stories about the Chinese lanterns, I'm hesitant. I recently bought two new Feuerhand Baby Special 276 lanterns and love those, though they aren't the brightest. I wanted something with a wider wick and liked the Air Pilot... but then there's the apparent quality issues. What's your advice?
@@darkhelmetsplane yes the glass globes on the new Chinese Dietz are really thin and I would probably look for something USA made.
Great tips and videos. I like tropical colors and I think that lantern looks great.
I own a few older lanterns and now I have some guidance.
Also, I was wondering if you painted the underside of the chimney, where it connects to the top of the globe?
I didn’t notice, but I guess it wouldn’t matter much. Thanks again for sharing.
Yes I actually raise it up and try to get some paint under there but it gets a lot of soot from burning it and it’s not going to look too good after a few burns and I think the natural layer of soot offers good protection on its own because I have a lot of older unpainted lanterns and they rarely rust out in that area. I’ve also seen some people completely disassemble that part of the lantern to clean and paint it but I don’t think it’s worth the hassle because you have to bend the chimney to pull it out and risk damaging it so I just clean it the best I can and go for it. 👍
Thanks again. Also, what type of Krylon spray paint did you use, or recommend? I’ve noticed different formulas, I.e. Krylon Fusion, Krylon Premium, etc.
Thanks.
@@jasper60103 I forgot what it’s called but it’s usually the ones with the paint and primer in one I don’t know if it’s a gimmick but it’s ok also use Rustoleum sometimes but be prepared for an extended drying time
@@lotsatrains Hi. An unrelated newbie question. I heard that Dietz lanterns stamped on the fount with NY USA could still be manufactured in Hong Kong. Is that true? Seems a little misleading to me.
Thanks.
@@jasper60103 Hi to my knowledge the later made Hong Kong lanterns did not have the NY usa stamping on the fount but things do get tricky with these lanterns there may be exceptions 👍
Good tips, thanks. I guess heat resistant paint is not necessary?
So far so good with the paint 👍
I’m curious as to how well this holds up to the heat, I’m also curious as to how well it holds up if you get oil on it during filling and wipe it off once it’s all dried and cured.
Hi spray paint actually when done properly holds up very well and the lantern is still pretty much the same condition as it was painted with regular use. This was a common practice with many contractor and utility lanterns as well and also if you ever have decided to strip off a previous paint job on one of these you would realize what you are in for 😂
@@lotsatrains thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I just started stripping one today haha. I wasn’t trying to remove paint though, it was all just surface rust but carefully taking the whole thing apart was tricky enough, I couldn’t imagine having to strip it of paint manually, thankfully I’ve got a sandblasting cabinet so I carefully stripped all of the rust off with that and now it has a good base to paint on. I’ve painted a lot of firearms, some with Krylon or Rustoleum, some with Duracoat, and I’ve had some Cerakoted and that by far is the most durable. For a lot of applications the normal off the shelf spray paint holds up just fine even against some heat and plenty of CLP so I guess that’s the route I’m going to go for this refinish. I’m refinishing an old Dietz D-Lite that I found in my great grandfather’s barn that’s definitely seen some use over the years. I want it to be a useable heirloom even though it really isn’t worth anything monetarily.
Have you ever had issues with the paint on the chimney getting soft when the lantern heats up?
No issue with it getting soft but I did a light blue on one lantern and the color darkened up a bit on the crown but other paint colors seem to be fine.
@lotsatrains I did two coats of primer and two of a metallic rustoleum and then I light the thing the paint dang near melts. It has only been two days since I painted it, so I wonder if it needs more time to fully cure?
@@VeryTucker oh yes that rustoleum takes a week or more to dry when doing multiple coats especially with the primer. I usually don’t prime and just do a couple light coats.
@@lotsatrains Excellent, I'll give it a few more days and then try it again. I appreciate the advice!
Um - two words: LAZY SUSAN.
Yes but can’t get the bottom 😃
@@lotsatrains That's a pretty small price to pay, in my opinion. You have far more control and aren't painting your trees. AND - the bottom is the one place you could use a brush if you feel the need.
@@Jollyprez thanks but I have done many my way and it works with exactly the outcome that I prefer and never have painted the tree😝
Looks like one of those $7 Walmart lanterns.
Thanks for watching
i want to paint one od green
Sounds great 👍
