Erik Voss analyzes the film's deeper meaning and the subtle design choices made by director Ryan Coogler and his creative team. What callbacks does Black Panther make to Captain America and Thor, and how does it connect to Avengers Infinity War? How is Killmonger/N'Jadaka (Michael B. Jordan) influenced by figures like Malcom X, but also Heath Ledger's The Joker in The Dark Knight? What is the hidden meaning of the movie's prologue and its final scene?

Awe! Re watching it and trying to hold back tears 😢
why does this only have 1 like
One cool thing is the score. Through most of the movie it's the Africa tribal stuff until killmonger shows up and once he takes power it's American hip hop beats. It stays like that until T'challa returns.
Okay Ranger of course because wakanda and black panther are all centered around Africa.
American Imperialismus, again.
Okay I didn’t realize that
Kendrick went ham on the soundtrack
oof, YAS.
"Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, cause they knew death was better than bondage"
"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers"
Easily two of the best real life reflection movie quotes ever
Is the walls reference to Trump 😂
But killmonger’s ancestors were from wakanda, so they wouldn’t have been brought over in slave ships
Brendan Gagan His father was from Wakanda, but his mother was american. He could be talking about his ancestors from his mother's side.
I thought he was talking about his "African" brothers and ancestors.
Most definitely
Anyone else notice how the final battle between Killmonger and T'Challa happened on a literal underground railroad?
DK but not really 🤔🤔🤔
DK but not really Probably a coincidence because that there’s no historical connection there. Why would a final battle occur in the underground railroad?
yeah i know what the underground railroad was, but i doubt that was the significance of the final fight.
Kyle Dela Cruz oh that's good. Didn't even think of that.
Yeap... This is an easter egg... Very relevant to the freedom fight as it is a literal fight
Killmonger's last line is truly iconic. Not even in a meme way, it's just plain iconic.
"I call them Sneakers" my favorite line in the movie!
SuperNintendoFan SNF I couldn't focus anymore after she said that. I lost it. She said something funny about the suits but I zoned out because I couldn't stop laughing at what she said before that. I thought she had a unique name for them but nope just sneakers LMAOOOOOO
i am so sad cause i'm french and I nver understand this joke even the french version don't help me, It's frustrating to not undersant something everybody seems to be laughing at
love how Shuri bombed T’Challa’s Jesus slippers 😂😂
Killmonger doesn't burn the flowers to make a statement, he does it so that no one can really challenge him for the throne the way he challenged T'challa
Am I the only person that noticed that the three cities that were mentioned to have embraced the idea of rising up against their oppressors were the same cities that have the three sanctums from Doctor Strange?
you are not, my friend! :) that was a good one. i thought more people would have noticed
me 2 :)
Wait. Include me. What three cities were those??
@@houseofiii NYC, Hong Kong, London
Other thing I thought amazing about the ending is that the kid asks T'Challa who he is, and then, in the mid-credits scene, at the UN, T'Challa starts his speach by saying who he is
by the end of the movie i liked Killmonger more than T'Challa Michael B. Jordan did a phenomenal job portraying Killmonger
drop_dead619 Phase 3 has had the best villains, excluding Kaecilius, I've seen so far!
drop_dead619 fact.possibly the best antagonist\villain on big screen
Hope thanos excels all of them.
Nah. I was being tchalla all the way. I think the reason people like Killmonger is his flaws and radical ideas. Tchalla is almost a perfect character just like cap that's why he is not that interesting. Superman has the same problem.
Agreed
Many are saying that they want Killmonger back alive. As much as I want that too, Marvel really can’t. Like with Yondu, his death meant something, sort of a turning point or a change in the way people view the world. So he needs to stay dead or his death won’t have any meaning.
Max Bond they could
They could bring him back on TV, if Phil Coulson is any indication.
he didnt die in the comics so its possible
Max Bond that’s how I feel about black widow
Unless your name is Uncle Ben a comic book death is never final
A conversation between thor and T'challa considering the parallels they share would be awesome
AsironID
Thor: I am mighty!
T’challa: I don’t care.
Feels like the Asgardian (if any of them survive Thanos in that Ragnarok after-credit) will reside in Wakanda settlements.
AsironID I always thought about that. King to King.
Nah I feel like T'challa and Stark would help Thor rebuild asgard in Norway in the place where Odin died. I don't think T'challa would want an entire settlement of alien refugees seeing as how Wakanda just came out of isolation.
Ansh Mathur lol right
I nearly cried when N’Jadaka died. He was just broken.
Same, he is the only villian in any, not just marvel, any movie I've ever seen that I actually cried for because he may not have been right in the way to handle the situation but he was right about everything else, especially that all life started in Africa so all people in a way are wakandan.
@@gamerjoey722 have yet to see Black Panther but N’Jadaka reasoning makes more sense to me then Thanos
I thought Shuri was a super star with all of her innovative creations that powered her brother's success.
Tc Anderson
All the women were superstars! This movie gave me the feeling Wonder Woman tried for.
Yup
lol
I really hope there is a scene in either infinity war or avengers 4 or Black Panther two where Shuri and Tony Stark meet and either compare notes or have like a tech off to see whose is better. Shuri offering suggestions about improving the Ironman armor while Stark offers counter points and snarky comebacks would be amazing.
Tacobell1384 I couldn’t agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel like everyone should watch this after watching black panther. GREAT VIDEO
365 number 46
And probably rewatch the film too
your research always blows me away, especially with this one 🙅🏾♂️
I wanna see a T'Challa/M'Baku buddy cop movie next. They work great together and I think it'll be really fun.
At the casino panthers ex says to the general to "whip her wig back and forth" which i think is a willow smith song reference
that was the point....
It was a great movie......M’Baku was the unsung hero along with shuri
Cyclops Is Better Than Wolverine M’Baku reminds me of a anti-hero. Something good will come from him. I feel it.
DontWorryBoutKoon BoutWhoDat - Honestly I’d be fine with a movie just about him >.
T'Challa was never an isolationist, not intentionally, at least; he was a traditionalist. His entire arc in this movie was an exploration of how deeply he believed in the traditions of the past. So, yeah. Even though the country had an isolationist policy, it was more something that had to be maintained as opposed to T'Challa's own philosophy. He was just following in the footsteps of his predecessors, which he thought was right. But he separates himself from them by the end. Yay! :)
One tidbit: in Polish translation (when it comes to the subtitles at least) the Kansas reference is substituted by Narnia.
This movie is masterfully crafted and executed. It's rich, deep story along with it's startlingly factual parallels to the real world, really showcase the extreme spectrum of just how much humanity has to overcome to persevere throughout history.
Nick Hadlick these are my exact feelings after watching this. So much more than a movie
Nick Hadlick, my sentiments exactly.
Captain America: How much money does it take to kill Starks family
Tony Stark: How much
Captain America: One buck
Tony Stark: Not Funny
Thunderbolt18 000 lame ass nigga
Lol
Gotta admit, that was good lol
Batman got his feelings hurt xD
Thunderbolt18 000 I don't get it
Edit: ohhhh never mind just got it lmao
Am I the only one that thought the part where shuri pretends to challenge T’challa for the throne was a nod to the arc where shuri become black panther?
Potential Star Wars Reference. When Okoye disarmed the gun from one of the fighters, she said that it was "So primitive", just like Obi Wan said in Star Wars when fighting against Grievous.
Ricosirus yes! I thought that too
Actually, he said, "So uncivilized." But it had the same disgusted inflection. ☺
This is awesome killmonger was a great villain wished he didn’t die
Wouldn’t be surprised if he isnt dead and Black Panther uses the vibranium to save him
The mandarin revives him on 616 so we may have a chance to see him again
It’d be cool if killmonger sided with T’Challa as like a bodyguard for him. Not to mention that killmonger’s jaguar suit looked awesome
420 West side 8
Eman Gutz Same
I luv the soundtrack when Killmonger comes onto the screen or just him scheming. I need that in my life plz!
Geek Hero Studios Tasha cobbs
In the black panther original score, it's called "burn it all"
Tony Kirumba yea I got it beforehand, but thanks tho!
M'Baku was a surprisingly good character. Did not expect that.
I think a Killmonger movie would be amazing! I'd like to learn more about his cinematic backstory.
I think Killmonger is more like Bane than Joker.
KingOfMadCows Klua is more a joker
KingOfMadCows, Klaue is the joker of this analogy.
He based his performance on heath ledgers joker
He's got bits of both I reckon
Killmonger is Magneto. He's trying to help the black folk from the white threat.
RIP king you’ll forever be remembered WAKANDA FOREVER
After defeating N'Jadaka, T'Challa brings him to see his first and last Wakandan sunset.
Me: (turns to friend in cinema) Simba, everything the light touches is our kingdom.
Also that opening with the dad totally gave me Lion King vibes.
11:52 I’m pretty sure this gold suit is the suit that Killmonger uses as king.
It shows up near the start of the film. T’Challa turns it down in favor of the silver one
“ that’s a Bugatti spaceship “ 😂😂😂😂
KillMonger was more an antagonist than a villain in my opinion…
Terese S k
A villain is an antagonist
Keola Takamori no not entirely. An antagonist is someone who opposes the protagonist while a villain is someone who is pretty much just evil
I'd say he's a villain considering he's super vindictive and his idea of liberating his own people is bringing ruin to the rest of the world and destroying Wakanda.
In most cases (including this one) the villain is the antagonist. but yes they are different, my mistake.
The dirt in which T'challa is buried to reach the souls of the dead is orange -- like the Soul Stone!
Peter Morter but he also managed to reach the souls of the dead in ice as well?
It is the drink made from the herb that takes them to the ancestral plane not the dirt or snow. the burial is ritualistic.
Maybe the meteor in the prologue not only consists of vibranium but also the soul stone?
and that vibranium might be an "after-product" of that soul stone too... or a metallic mutation or something along those lines.
Interesting idea, but a lot of African soil is actually a reddish colour - I can vouch for that part of Africa anyways - Kenya, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda... I think Coogler was just being authentic to the location. As Eric said, he spent some time there researching for the film.
*"WHAT ARE THOOOOOSEE?!"*
That was the worst part of the movie shot wasn't even funny
D C It definitely was funny
It illustrated that Shuri wasn't as isolated as some might think. She's obviously been keeping herself abreast of the culture outside of Wakanda.
2m0rrow is not promised I nearly walked out if the movie at that point, it made me take the movie a lot less seriously
Cynna1065 She's smart. Of course she knows whats up outside of Wakanda
I've seen it twice already and it is my favorite marvel movie yet!
I've seen it twice too! And I might see it again like 50 more times lol I cant believe only has been out for just a week!
Rewatching Voss on Christmas so I feel like I have a friend to spend it with. Thank you for what you do.
Grace Jones “IS” not “WAS” - she’s very much alive.
baronessvondengler i remember stating a few yrs back id like to see Storm played by a younger Grace Jones and ppl laughed at me....my own ppl....now look at this magnificence
That would be the most badass Storm possible, I think. Shit, I think she could play her now.
Incredible video, we can see your preparation in this video. Excellent Work!
Killmongers Jaguar costume is all so because in the comic he has a pet Leopard named Prayy .
I think some might have missed Killmonger breaking his spear at the first joust. The shortened spear is a clear reference to Shaka Zulu. Shaka famously wielded a short spear (iklwa), breaking culturally from the traditional longer assegai. Follows Killmongers character: a more aggresiv expansionist african leader.
This was done VERY well! Informative with the history, quotes from cast & crew and explaining the details of the film...NICE!
18:13 black panther says this to claw after the chase in korea
I want to see a Black Panther, Bucky Barnes, M'Baku team up
Reed L. Wilton it might happen. In the last credit scene, the kids called buck "white wolf". In the comics black panther and the white wolf fight alongside each other.
Yeah, I would love to see that flesh out
YES
Soft rock
I love this! Y’all did a great job on this video.
As soon as I walked out of my the theater, I immediately turned on this video. No joke.
WAKANDA FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
David Park We own ya.
🙅🏽♂️
David Park
Wankanda for ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andrew Trautman
So only European economies can only thrive? Talk about racist ignorance.
DaReal KMTG
Let's GOOOO ✊✊✊✊
Black excellence and power for lifeeeee!!!!!!!!!
Jordan’s Killmonger and this movie as a whole are second only to Ledger’s Joker and the Dark Knight in my favorite superhero villain and superhero movie
TheCrazySportsDude I think that his mask and the heist was a nod to the dark night. He's like a mix between Bane and Joker.
100% saw the similarities too.
I specifically dislike DC comics with an extremely unfair bias.
however, if Jordan's Killmonger is second to Ledger's Joker... it's by a wiiiide margin
When he carried him to see the sunset, it reminded me of when Mufasa told Simba “ Everything the light touches is yours”
i feel like erik killmonger could quite possibly be the best villain that's been in a marvel movie to date.
What I want to see in the sequel is shuri as black panther. The idea of it is that t'challa gets so badly hurt in infinity war that shuri has to take over as black panther and the queen
Carlos Gámez1600 there was concept art of her panther costume for the movie
Carlos Gámez1600 Hmm... No
Carlos Gámez1600 no pls,no one wants to see a female as a hero
too early. she can't fight in the MCU. imagine her against mbaku. comics are a different story tho.
I’d rather see T’Challa as BP a little longer than just 3 or 4 films.
I feel like they make a reference to Shari becoming the Black Panther, when she raises her hand
I would love a film following Nakia and Okoye! Great analysis and very much looking forward to the rest!
As a black girl from Brooklyn I found myself tied between T’chala and killmonger because they brought good points and a part of me wanted killmonger to be king
Can we just see Black panther with his one and true wife Storm!!!
No, because Fox owns the movie rights .... well, for now. Marvel and Fox did have a recent merger, so .... possibilities for the future.
Disney now owns 20th century fox, and Disney also owns Marvel studios. So now the X-Men, including Storm are able to be included in the Marvel cinematic universe.
Soon my child soon
Al Will not yet
Al Will It hasn't gone through yet, but it is soon to happen, we won't see FF4 X-Men send DPool, until like 2019 or 2020
I just watch this movie 30 minutes ago XD
Same
me to
That question at the end...
During the first scene in Oakland, the kids outside were listening to Too $hort, an East Oakland rapper. This movie repped my home city so well!
The movie is really good
jaden hickson 🎥🔬📽️
It’s a good thing I watched the movie today 😂
JayCeeWhy Same here. One of the best MCU films since Civil War!
JayCeeWhy me too. Such an awesome movie.
Love all of the behind the scenes that this video showcases.
Are we all forgetting that in the comics Killmonger is brought back to life not once.....but twice?! They can def bring him back!!!
Pnuttbuttaluva XD from your lips to Bast's ears!
Been waiting for this Video!!!!
Im actually impressed with your insight into this film being melanin deficient and all...gives me hope.
Great job guys. I love this video alot. Great research an hard work. Keep up the amazing content
What if the final infinity stone is in the vibranium meteor in Wakanda? That could explain why there is a massive fight in Wakanda in Infinity War. In Black Panther it was mentioned that they have barely scratched the surface of the meteor. Idk, its just a theory that just popped up.
Peder Holthe ummm that theory has existed since the LEGO sets were shown...
k
havent seen them soooooo
I was so conflicted on who I wanted to win
thicc dan I'm glad Killmonger won in the end. Not only did I want him to win since most villains usually lose but his character was portrayed very well.
KingCodester111 Yes I agree, but when he was about to die in the end and told T’Challa he wanted to die I was sad. I wanted him to live and turn on them which would cause another movie!
KingCodester111
I wasn't. However, I understood Killmonger and how someone can come to believe his ideology.
It was sad that he died at the end. He could have been part of something bigger, helping T'Challa use Wakandan resources to help everyone--black, white, yellow, red, green, blue, and orange.
If his father just could have taken him back to Wakanda, he could have turned out to be a happier and well adjusted person. And that's what made him that more tragic...
I'm from Kansas, when she made that joke the whole theater lost it. Btw we're tired of the Dorothy wizard of oz shit.
Brandon H yeah I’m stationed in Kansas n everyone here were laughing
One of my favorite BP videos so far!
killmonger is kind of like the mixture of loki(by family matters) and bane(like social and political matters).
13:07 “no other character is wearing red or green in this scene” There’s an extra right behind T’Chala wearing red.
thats not a extra
I'd love a movie with Shuri in the main role. She's so damn charming.
Really well done. Good research 🏆
Review so amazing I subscribed!
18:05 i would say Marvel's Lion King😂
AsironID gggg I thought that too tho this was more interesting to me
AsironID I
Guardians of the Galaxy meets Lion King
A super awesome break down!! Thanks!!
Bruce Wayne 🙄
great job on this. this movies definitely had so many messages,
Great stuff guys. Rock on!
I'm sure there will be a sequel to this great movie. What I hope they explore is the burning of the purple herb. Since Kill Monger burned all of it, and only one was saved to heal T'Chala, does that mean he will always be the Black Panther? Can there be other kings and black panther queens after him?
Francesca Estelle He can still age though as u saw with his father so he would eventually die
Francesca Estelle There are gonna be atleast 2 more Black Panther movies, along with Doc Strange, Spiderman, Ms. Marvel, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
I believe the panther god will give them more, just like in the comics.
My guess is that there are still heart-shaped herbs out there. What Killmonger burned was the royal garden of the herb, what's left would be the wild herb
I want a Shuri movie right now. I love her and she deserves it
This summary was incredible! You truly caught the essence and and the nuances of this movie. After watch this I have a deeper appreciation for the movie!
Great analysis. Thanks for posting.
For the second Black Panther film I want;
- Kraven = Gerard Butler
- Storm = Yaya Dacosta
- Namor = Steven Yeun
-Namor = Ian Anthony Dale
cant help but draw comparisons between the Punisher and Kill Monger
Great research done on this!
reference and adaption and Easter eggs are so important into all super hero movies including the clothes the costume and make up and wigs and everything and places to and armour and tech this is so importants to a superhero to sequels.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR A WHOLE 3 DAYS!!!
Nate Artzi yea same😂
I LOVE THIS MOVIE
SomeRandomGuy wasn’t that great not even top 5 marvel movie
Exceptional video. Limited mispronunciations. Phenomenal information. Broad perspective.
Thank you (3 years after the fact, but sincere),
Great Break down! As always. 👌🏾
21:11 why didn't u compare this to the scene in GoT battle of the bastard they even get rescued the same way jon did
Kevin Rivas Exactly. That is what I thought when I saw this scene.
Kevin Rivas because Battle of the Bastards was actually good
18:11 Uhh, no he doesn't. T'challa says that when he captures Klaue.
Love yr videos!!! Carry on!
I wasn’t paying much attention to the film so I am glad this is uploaded
Nakia was so cool!
What if in infinity war they bring back killmonger and he helps fight thanos for a deal or what if he comes back in the sequel
Adan Martinez That would ruin his death
Must agree with Chris here, his death was portrayed perfectly and T'Challa himself agreed with what he wanted, to propel Thanos's plan getting Killmonger back won't be so great
it ll never happen
Thank you for referencing 13th. Such an important film.
Amazing episode!! 👍💯🔥
