    He passed out due to a chest cold that he had. He was dehydrated by the cold (which lowers your blood pressure and speeds up your heart rate when you are dehydrated) and also the medication he was taking for the cold had antihistamines in it also accelerates heart rate, dehydrates you, and also lowers blood pressure due to the sedating affect. Add that to the fact his physical stress he was under and it caused a drop in his blood pressure that caused him to faint.

    Feeling for him, I almost collapsed after my last game - I wasn't planned to even play, was battling the tail end of an infection and our starter told me an hour before the game he wasn't coming and neither was his backup.
    My blood sugar crushed during the game and I couldn't even undress by myself. It's so scary when your body betrays you. I can't even imagine how bad it was for him, not even getting off the ice under his own power.

  • @CatieCass
    @CatieCass Před 5 lety +210

    Steve Mason was very sick, so that's why he didn't start this game. It was definitely something floating around the locker room because it was reported that Neuvirth wasn't feeling well at all before the game started, but he had no choice but to suit up and get to the net, thinking, hoping and praying that he'd be able to fight through it. Turns out that as soon as he went into the typical goalie stance during the time of the faceoff, everything just went dark, the lights got blurry, and boom. He fell. This was taken from a press conference Neuvirth gave upon being released from the hospital. I think it was just a bad sinus infection, which can feel like death itself (speaking from experience).

    5:13 It happens quickly, but when the goalie drops, you can see the closest ref skate towards him. The ref only sees him out of the corner of his eye, and he begins immediately skating towards the goalie, but doesn't look at him. His eyes stay on the face-off. Weird, but something about that split second screams professionalism to me. Like he'd seen goalies pass out many times before. I would have stared in shock for a second, wondering if it was a joke.

    Hockey is such a mature sport. In the end, they are regular people and want to aid others, even when they are on the opposing team. This is why I play and watch hockey and it’s my favorite sport, like when you play 7 tough games and you lose, they always will be happy and respectful and wish them luck

    neurocardiogenic syncope episode, a lack of oxygen to the brain, essentially a fainting event. Typically caused by Dehydration or low blood pressure. Possibly upper respiratory or sinus infection related. Most people who suffer from simple fainting have no underlying heart or neurological (nerve or brain) problem. People don’t realize the massive volume of profuse sweating that hockey players endure during a game. Especially so for goalies. Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more. 💦p
