  • Comparison of Meinl Classics Custom and Meinl Classics Custom Dark cymbals.
The audio for both sets of cymbals were recorded exactly the same (e.g. same mics, EQ, preamps, volume, etc.). The only difference is the cymbal sets.
    Meinl Classics Custom:
    14" Medium Hi-Hat, 16" Medium Crash, 18" Medium Crash, 20" Medium Ride
    Meinl Classics Custom Dark:
    14" Dark Hi-Hat, 16" Dark Crash, 18" Dark Crash, 20" Dark Ride

I like the bite in the regular hi hats, and the dark crashes would take repeated hitting quite well, but for a single crash hit you let ring, the regular suits me. I think a mixed set would be nice. These, the dual customs and pure alloys actually sound really good when in a mix. Solo you definitely hear the lacking weight and depth that the Byzance have. But for the price, especially used, they really sit in heavy or electronic music really nicely. So much better than other companies budget cymbals ive heard.

I’m team classics custom. I play metal mainly, so I prefer having a relatively bright sounding crash and lighter hats. I think the darks sound great, but they have a darker tone that I don’t think works for me personally. Both rides sounded great, but I preferred the classics custom, though the ride is the only cymbal that I prefer to be heavy, so neither were my favorite.

    • @user-zh7th2ge1c
      @user-zh7th2ge1c Před 2 lety

@WolfstyleZ I think the thinking is that, if you are a low tuned band with alot of low pitch instruments its better to stand out with the drums. higher pitched cymbals, snare crack and bass drum clickiness.
But after careful consideration, i think these dark cymbals will work fine. They will still cut through but offer potentially a more unique sound in the mix to other metal bands.

In the mix the difference between the two is apparent .
The Dark Classic stood out for distinct room for the drums with a full range Tone.
Compressed better than the way the other brighter wide tones of the Classic regular series.
With this said, without the drums in the mix just cymbals, the Classic cymbals clearly have a wide range of overtones and brightness.
Seemingly the Dark Dark Classic Tone wasn't going anywhere against the Brilliance of the Classic regular series.
It's the way they mix in the drums.

I prefer the Ride & Hi Hat of the Dark Series.
But I don't like the crashes of either series.
For Crash Cymbals I prefer the Meinl Extreme Series or Power Crash Series.
Or at the very least the HCS Bronze Meinl Crash Cymbals.
But the Crash Cymbals of the Dark Series are too trashy & metallic & the Medium Series isn't powerful enough to cut through the mix.
I actually like & have the 12" Dark Splash by Meinl & 18" Dark China also by Meinl.
So thanks for the review, & for making me considering getting the Hi Hat & Ride of the Dark series as well.
Also, loved the outro song. A very well mixed instrumental track with a shining & audible bass is always nice to hear in Metal.
    Cheers
