My hygiene problem started when my mother's health detriorated bec of breast cancer. I've lived with my parents and was her caregiver until she died. During her final weeks in the hospital, I went on days without bathing, brushing my teeth and sometimes missing my meals. I never wanted to leave her back then bec I knew those were her last days. I still have some days when I find it difficult to even get out of bed after she died.

Just like some of the people here in the comments section, I heavily relate to this thing where even just by doing anything drains and gets me demotivated to the point that it terribly affected my relationships in general, and also my grades in school. Eventually, I decided to start working on it (I established a routine and made time to take care of my physical and mental health) even though I wasn't feeling like doing any of that one bit. It's a tough path but... still, I just had to do it. I totally agree with this phrase: “Just do it.” It works all the time for me. And whenever I hesitate on doing something important, I use this 5-second rule that I heard from a podcast one time wherein if you have something that you know that needs to be done but you're hesitating, try counting down from 5 and by the time you're done counting, you should've decided whether or not to do it. It's not necessarily applicable to everything since it also depends on the situation, but anyway, I still hope someone will take my word for it and try it for themselves. Don't expect that we'll get better immediately. Although I might say that *doing* things instead of *thinking* about them helps in elevating _this_ feeling, I'd also add that not feeling any changes soon after trying this sort of change is not immediate. It takes time...and as someone who's still experiencing it and realized something about this ongoing journey, I also wanted to share this article with y'all:

Growing up in foster care this was always a big issue that I saw handled in a variety of ways. I saw staff tell girls that were depressed to go get back in the shower because they hadn't taken long enough showers. I met people where their trauma surrounded the very thing they needed to do to keep up their daily hygiene and so they avoided it altogether. If you were raped everyday in the shower by someone in or out of your home and no matter how much soap you lathered or how hard you scrubbed you never felt clean because what they did to you was that disgusting you wouldn't ever want to shower either.

Ive had really bad mental health since i was about 10. For 8 years, I hadn't brushed my teeth regularly (more than a week at a time). My teeth didnt look that bad so I never bothered. Recently, ive tried to keep brushing my teeth alot more! sometimes i forget or am not motivated to do so, but i do try :) i hope i can one day brush my teeth like its normal :)
When i got back to brushing, the mint toothpaste was really painful and strong, so here are some things i did if you also have this problem! :)
    - Using mouthwash and diluting it down (makes the mint less strong)
    - Chewing gum (not strong gum tho)
    - Using spearmint wherever possible (its sweeter and not as strong!)
I hope this helps someone! never give up, no matter how bad it seems. But also dont feel bad about yourself for neglecting self care, sometimes other things take priority, even if its just making yourself feel safe and calm

i go weeks without brushing my teeth. i’m trying to get back into it, little by little, as my gums are receding and it has made me intensely paranoid, which increases the depression. it feels like an endless loop. when i mention it to my father, he boils it down to laziness. my mother sees it for what it really is.. a form of self-harm and self-neglect. whilst it’s not ideal, my mum knows why it happens. when i leave for uni, i’m going to make it my goal to care for myself as much as possible.

Support systems? The absence of such and any positive reinforcement compound the beliefs I harbor which feed this cycle of depression. I can't ask for help or confess anything to the people on my life. I told my sister I hadn't showered in a month, her response was 'eww'. I've been 'little big sis' our entire lives, I lotioned her feet when she was too 'disturbed' to do so, and I was responsible, clean, encouraging and consistent for decades while she only played video games . . . Now that the tables have turned, I mostly recieve ridicule and nagging from her, from them both. My grandma only ever declares 'there's something wrong with you!' instead of ever asking 'what's wrong, what's bothering you and how can I help?' . . . The people in my life refuse to express compassion towards me, though they'll jump through hoops to 'please' and 'impress' others. Makes my presence feel even more futile and unbearable. At this point, I WANT SO BADLY to be able to be well again, but without incentive, with only solitude and myself on my side, what's the point???

    • @leoniepattison3081
      @leoniepattison3081 Před 2 lety

You have to try to find that incentive. You can do it. They only nag you because they want you to get your act together. They do care, even though you can't see it. Prove to them you are capable. And if it really is too much like hard work, then maybe you need a little medication to get things moving. Good luck... you will be ok. Have faith in yourself.

This is very simplistic. Yes poor self care and hygeine are related but it goes very, very deep.
I will try to practice better hygeine because I know it creeps people out , but my issues are so very deep to the core of being that being like other people will possibly never be possible.
I can pull off looking out together from time to time but I have a deep self hatred and self punishment/ complex the drives me to disrespect myself in a myriad of ways.
I have so much empathy for street people and slobs in general as I guess I am one. I see myself as worthy of caring for myself but this core wound keeps me punishing myself.... It's very sad.
As a side note, both my parents were in mental hospital and my mother was in a hateful cult. She abused us severely to the point of being commited to psyche hospital.

I had to wake up at 6 & leave at 6:30 walk to her house after her mom left for work I had the bathroom for an hour to myself my friend woke up at 8 to get ready & we would leave the house at 8:45 if I remember correctly... also it wasn’t her money paying the bills all those years it was my fathers..... which she stole from us all those years I just found out 4 years ago when my father found us... ( long story) so she owes us thousands of dollars I’m talking since I was 5... she had our checks until we turned 18.... but I know we won’t ever get the money back cause she done spent it on her house payments & bills.... but if I was you I would just shower when they aren’t home or if you have a good friend that would let you shower there sometimes... hopefully if you explain the situation maybe they wouldn’t care... but I’m sorry your going through this I went through this in high school I think I was a sophomore when she told us we can shower somewhere else... so that’s exactly what I did... but I know that’s abuse / neglect... but she was abusive all my life .... so I was used to it...but I would just shower when your parents aren’t home if you can.... it’s not like your not allowed to shower like I was....

Like maybe people who hate the winter,,, they get down in the winter but still find like a coping skills. You know, alot of people go in and out of depressive episodes,, and the thing is to Not 'think' negative, You have to think positive and also there is alot of people who are able to go on after things and they end up with good lives and gain alot of wisdom.

Then you just have to pick yourself up, and do it yourself. Do things that give you joy in life. Maybe ask for help, or find a hobbie that gets you out and about amongst people. If you need a little medication, then so be it. Take one day at a time, and start with something small. Then add another thing, whether that be showering or whatever. At some point, things won't seem like such a big deal or requiring too much effort. Change doesn't have to be scary. Get with it! You can do it! Good luck, and I wish you well. 🥰👍

I totally get you as I’ve battled with depression all my life too and have borderline too. I have a fight with self neglect all the time and can go months without showering and changing my clothes and then my home goes too and I only let a few inside my home because they understand. My family don’t get it at all and say when you have a shower you will feel so much better. My mum was a narcissist and my estranged sister is and she lies and lies and every one believes her and discard me like I’m a piece of junk they don’t need need. Even some friends with mental health don’t get it. I only have one person who gets me and that’s my adopted sis and she’s better than blood any day. My only escape is my CZcams channel dedicated to David Cassidy to keep him from being forgotten. I just forget about me when doing my videos it’s how I get by every day. So I know where you are coming from!!!

Thank you for sharing. For support and resources, the NAMI National Warmline Directory is a great resource, unlike a hotline for those in immediate crisis, warmlines provide early intervention with emotional support that can prevent a crisis - and a more costly 911 call or ER visit. The lines are typically free, confidential peer-support services staffed by volunteers or paid employees who have experienced mental health conditions themselves. For a list of where to find this service in your area please check out the link here -> www.nami.org/NAMI/media/NAMI-Media/BlogImageArchive/2020/NAMI-National-HelpLine-WarmLine-Directory-3-11-20.pdf

The link between hygiene and mental health is significant. Maintaining a clean environment can reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being. Using Sterloc disinfectant helps keep your surroundings germ-free, contributing to a healthier, more positive mindset. Regularly disinfecting your space can have a profound impact on both your physical and mental health.

Also brushing teeth let me tell you something there are bullies that are mean af and then they have the nerve to have hygiene issues so yes they may get talked about after being a bully especially if they so called "gang bang" (people with the same names but not who's being referred to, if you don't eavesdrop then you won't get stories or situations mixed up) , then there are those who are dealing with harassment from so many different people on a daily basis at work, at home, and when they travel so they purposefully let some of their hygiene go to keep people away from them. First, everyone is supposed to be wearing a mask to help stop from contracting and dying from this deadly disease that we were told so many people died from called Coronavirus-19. The way I see it you should shower and brush teeth everyday, however, if these things are happening to you and you are not interested in being close to people or anything like that then feel free to smell however tf you want, and don't brush teeth no one should be that close to you anyways they want us all 6ft apart but I guess if people can't have their way and be all in your face and sit/stand/be close to you everyone will die or something. I was taught about bubble space early on, if I can reach out my hand and touch you we're too close. No one who is not my husband needs to be anywhere within my personal bubble space. If you are, I'm going to assume you like the smell of shit so don't talk shyt about the person you clearly like to see and be next to. And don't have other women and men bully them just because they are doing whatever they can to make themselves as unattractive as possible for you all so that you can stay away from them. Bad hygiene are clear indicators of disinterest in others so get the point and stay out their business and do what you can to stay clear of them. I have been sexually harrassed, human trafficked, and generally abused in one way or another most of my life the only person I care to be close to anyone except my husband so I don't care what you think, he thinks I smell and taste good af. ❤
    P.S.- God bless you Pamela B. 🙂

Maybe try showering 2x a day once in the morning & once at night before you go too bed ? and if you can change your products that you use? What kind of soap do you use? I would recommend a antibacterial bar soap or body wash.... don’t get the generic brand honestly I don’t think generic hygiene products work that well not things like soap or shampoo, conditioner or deodorant.... I don’t know I guess I’m picky about that kind of stuff..... & I’m not really sure what else you can do for bad breath I don’t have that problem....

😂😂😂😂 im from Africa , in our schools we had to go with buckets and collect tap water to bathe , not to mention the water is cold , their is a line on the tap and another line in the bathroom, the water is limited so it drips really slow and then theres only a two hour window everyday yo bathe during the day , unless you accept bathing at night , we wore idntical uniforms all the time so......i never used to shower , needless to say I've had scents inhumanly , and i kinda learned to normalize this , for me , the sytem was fucked so i might as well be as fucked as it 😂😂😂😂😂, anyways im in campus now , we don't generally have washing machines lying around in Africa so you have to handwash clothes which sucks , anyways , I pretty much have to unlearn bad hygiene , i also have to force myself to hand wash two weeks worth of clothes knowing ppl don't do this shit in other parts of the world , be greatful for the life you live , shit is miserable out here
