  • What is mental illness or mental disorder? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, mental illness is defined as a condition that negatively affects a person's thinking, feeling or mood for a sustained period of time.
You might be wondering “Is depression a mental illness? What about anxiety?” Yes, they are. In fact, they are the most common types of mental illnesses. In this video, we cover 10 of the more common mental illnesses: Anxiety, Personality, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, PTSD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Schizophrenia or Psychotic Disorders.
This is one of our first-ever in-depth video compiling the different mental health conditions. If you would like to support our channel and help us create more content like this, let us know in the comments below.

People have become way more supportive of mental illnesses and have more of an understanding of it nowadays.
Have to edit my comment because people taking what I said the wrong way: all I was trying to say is its definitely a lot more talked about nowadays, especially on social media and the amount of people that come together about it and discuss their stories. I mean heck, we on a video about mentaI health. There are tons of videos, websites, apps etc which help educate and spread awareness. I never said it’s 100% completely better, obviously there are still a lot of countries that have stigma attached to it, but my point is that it’s definitely better than 70 years ago. Let’s just hope things can keep improving. 👍🏻

Very true. I'm 55 years old and it's painfully awkward to grow up at this age. Certainly well worth it though. I spent decades feeling sorry for myself, or blaming others for my troubles. Then decades of addiction. Enough is enough. My troubles are my own and that is fine. I'm on a roll and ranting... might as well finish strong. So, I take responsibility for my health and all that entails. I forgive my abusers and those who have done me wrong. I turned my life over to the Lord. I row, he steers . It keeps getting better. I was diagnosed with ASD not too long ago, and something about people calling it a "mental illness" makes me feel uneasy. I'm not "ill" because I simply have a genetic disorder that makes me interact with the world a little bit different than most. I don't need curing. I'm not suffering. Sure, my depression and anxiety make me mentally ill, but not autism. I've literally had people tell me they "hope a cure comes out soon". I DONT NEED IT! I am perfectly fine and I feel as though I would be a completely different person if I didn't have autism. Stop classifying autistic people as incapable or useless.

i am autistic and i haven't met anyone who understands it, not even my closest friends get it. it makes everything harder, and i mean everything: eating, getting ready, showers, clothes, shopping, class, skincare, sleep, dating, friends, socialising, periods, body positivity, communicating with anyone at all. like sometimes i cant even explain how i feel, its just a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, people shout and argue but i cant speak, I'm frozen with fear. often i wish i wasn't autistic, that i had a different quirk, like a rare eye colour or a cool skill. it does has positives, but most of the time their weighed out.

And that goes for anyone and everyone who struggles with any sort of disorder or mental flaw! Your ok! Your doing so good! Look at you and what you have accomplished today! I cannot express enough how much @Dr.healingstrain mushrooms have changed my life. I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for years and have tried countless medications and therapies, but nothing seemed to work. But as soon as I started taking the mushrooms, I immediately noticed a difference in my mood and overall well-being. The anxiety and depression symptoms I once faced on a daily basis have now become manageable. I highly recommend @Dr.healingstrain mushrooms to anyone looking for a natural, effective solution to improve their mental health.

Then a month later she got diagnosed for eating disorder because of bullying that was happening at her school. Oh, and another one of my friends was diagnosed with PTSD from childhood abuse. But it was from her mum, and here’s the thing, she has separation anxiety(has a mental breakdown after not seeing her Mum for more than around 8 hours). Also her mum is an alcoholic that smokes and she has 8 older siblings. She also happens to be “blessed” with severe depression from age 8(8 seems to be a common factor) I think she might have crossed the threshold into suicidal if it wasn’t for all of her friends(including me) to have been working daily full time for years to have her experience at least a couple of happy moments each and every day. As for me I only have ADHD. Which I like to think of as a neurological superpower.

As well as being able to function within these disorders, and where our emotions cannot function normally because the whole mind frame has been attacked. Within the trigger of its element to think and react normally. This can also be felt through the whole embodiment. Treatment and diagnostic is referred and preferred for analysis.

I just don't understand why the third reaction to stress/trauma, "Freeze", keeps getting ignored in discussions about PTSD. A person can either freeze, fight, or flee. Their brain will choose one reaction/response over another based upon information they are receiving from both internal and external sources. Part of choosing to freeze can be, for example, when a child has been raised to ALWAYS be polite and not cause any trouble and so they don't confront their attacker. Thank you.

I have autism and I just wanna say, to every parent with kids like me, please don't stuff them with meds, assuming it'll solve everything. I highly suggest trying therapy first.
All my life especially as a child, doctors told my mom to just give me medication. She had a bad feeling about that and sought therapy for me instead. It helped me so much. Eventually at 18 years old (I went through extra school years) I had trouble with school right before exams, I tried ritalin. It was the worst experience. I couldn't controll my emotions, got panic attacks and lost all my hunger, which made it hard to eat. After weeks of this, I didn't experience any progress. Things only got worse. I found out these are side effects after calling my doctor. I was advised to stop taking asap. Had I been younger when this happened, I'm 100% sure my mom would have told me to suck it up and don't be dramatic.
If you do try medication, make sure you know what can go wrong and pay close attention.

My mom also refused medication but simply shut down all diagnostic efforts when ADD became less likely than the Asperger spectrum... • @carved_cuts
      @carved_cuts Před 4 lety +1

@@fionafiona1146 That is true. However not everyone has a good reaction to meds. So the change it makes could very well be a negative one. And this is much harder to notice in small children. Since they can't explain what's happening (poor understanding of emotions, smaller vocabulary, etc), and their crying can easily be mistaken for "just throwing a fit" and "being difficult." A friend of mine (with the same form of autism as me) experienced this as a child which ended up being bery traumatic for her.
But yes it is also true that the change can still be very positive and helpful. And help parents realise that their kids could really use some help. The brain's reaction to meds varies from person to person.

It is very hard being so different from the average society and unfortunately because of my differences and difficulties people in my schools would pick on me constantly and I would not be just verbally abused but also in some cases physically abused as well but psych2go has helped me a lot so thanks to everyone at phsych2go for making content that’s not only informing and entertaining but also helpful. ADHD is A LOT.
    - like a constant sensory overload without the ability to sense or treat it any better.
    - like a different memory system which is capable of dealing with that, but at the cost of accuracy or speed in the long run. Mostly accuracy. But 'being slow' is what you'll get to hear all the time, because you are prone to errors either way. That contributes to the effectiveness-problem.
    - like a mind adjusted to deal with your daily sensory overload so that any less and any more stimuli gets you either super nervous or super tired. But in the same time any stimuli gets devalued asap to make it easier to shift to the next one asap.
    - like a body adjusted for weird sleep patterns but it also takes longer to get tired in the first place (melantonin resistence). But you also develop your own kind of daydreams to keep up, which makes you more forgettable, when it happens. Sometimes it's even dangerous but you'd never know when. That's the inattentive type (even more accuracy, less control).
    - like a disability in pushing back unneeded emotions and thoughts as part of the normal response cycle. So that thinking and behaving right becomes more difficult even with all the knowledge and time at hand, but it isn't a disability. That's the impulsive type (even more speed, less control).
    - like going all-in for your personality instead, because nothing gets finished by you, either because your mood changed or your stimuli about what you wanted to do changed way too quickly.
So, is it a weak irritation filter issue then? Probably. But you see.. the individual is adjusted to this so hard, that it's rather a multi-impairing genetic thing. The sayings are about genetic imparements with the executive fuctioning, the most basic operations within the human brain.
It is also strongly linked to austism, ocd, borderline and shizophrenia which indicates maybe some underlying causes. Multi-diagnoses are possible. E.g. you can have severe social communication and understanding problems (autism), or severe self-esteem and reflecting problems (borderline), or severe anxieties and compulsions (ocd), or your brain fails to keep up the pace entirely (shizophrenia).

@@ImperfectLioness Speaking of breakdown, i forgot to talk about "hyperfocus":
      [also my opinion]
      # This devaluing process, important for task shifting, if changed successfully, it may lead to some weird kind of "hyperfocus", where you just stuck.
This form may also be the reason of your social anxieties in total, because you'll experiencing social pressure and the fear of lacking control at the same time, without being able to explain any of it understandably within or afterwards.
      # The other "hyperfocus" is about the unusual resistence to frustration and boredom within a certain task.
You will feel the urge to feel bored or frustrated as normally, but somehow they didn't bother you and they didn't build up like usual.
Either way, you are in trance. Probably because that's how you can deal with your situation.
And I think "hyperfoci" are changable because of this trance-similarity, but they need time and effort and your success depends on your lack of ressources at that point. Don't eat only pizza for 3 days in a row.. Instead aim for the whole alphabet or food color rainbow.
The method is to calm down, stop other processes to free some ressources and to change it back by basically trying to wake up manually. It's the same thing you do at the end of any meditation or whatever gets your body moved again while experiencing sleep paralysis.
That's why neuro-feedback and meditation are handy for them.
The usual music induced flow might not be helpful then, because searching the kick in this situation doesn't get you calm, even so it does a spark, it also blows it away hence only wastes ressources. And calmness is what you need to get out of it. Vitamin B and sugar might also be helpful, somehow. An energy may cut the time roughly in half. But if it only were that simple to take it and drink it, while being in trance.
And you probably have to try your strategies even if people directly asking you with undertones why you are doing nothing, but still sitting there despite the school is over since a couple minutes. And then you have to start over again. And if you were unlucky and untrained it will need like an extra hours just because of this question. Oooh and if you are already in deep trance but also very stressed and also don't see that, a simple touch can you instantly throw into a mental breakdown even if you never had problems with being touched or being neurotic. I'm not sure, but this experience of mine might also overlap with ocd and autism.
The other thing is, you don't loose energy while in it, because you lack the sense of time so damn hardly, that your brain makes sense of it by pretending you haven't lost that much ressources. It's like getting the golden sleep after like 3h (waking up directly after the first or second REM).
16h straight may feel physically like 4h on the gaming-exhaustion scale and if you are not carefully, you can risk a depression like manics do, but they'll do it because they have the urge to push themselves to claim some more good stuff in their lives, compared to their negative outlook within that period (others see that, but you're not). This type of "hyperfocus" doesn't do that. There is no weird pressure. You're just calm.
And if this "hyperfocus" extends to several days, i pray for you, you have the right environment and food to cope with the consequences. 14 days may feel like a lan-weekend on the gaming-exhaustion scale. The best thing you can do, is to regenerate and to be calm to avoid the manic-like bottom. It's possible.

During treatment I realize how bad my condition was, but I didn't see myself as someone with depression before going to a psychiatrist. I thought maybe I'm wrong or just overreacting. Now I know that my view of myself and a world was distorted.
So I think it's better to be cautious and just try to go a therapist or psychiatrist, maybe you are ok maybe not. But you will never now unless you try.
