  • This is a step by step instructional video on how to change the fluid in a Ford 7.5 & 8.8 differential. While I’m working on a ’98 Ford Mustang, this video applies to many Ford models & years since these rear ends have been in use for decades.
    I show many tips & tricks to make this job quick, easy & painless. The actual labor part of this job takes about an hour, even if you take your time. The longest part is waiting for the RTV to cure, which is 12 to 24 hours. There are gaskets available at most auto parts stores that work very well too. Use a gasket instead of RTV if you don’t want to wait for it to cure.
    I also cover things to look out for and inspect while you have the differential cover off, and even find a problem with my differential in the process.

    Don't know if youre still monitoring feedback on your video, but just want to say, excellent video Pete. Thanks for your time and detail. I know this vid is 7 yrs old but it's timeless. Been a while since I've done a fluid change in one of my mustangs, but a quick refresher vid is always a plus; actually brought a couple things to light for me for my 93 4cyl 7.5" diff. Dropped my tank to replace my dead "stock" 60lph fuel pump(swapping with a 115lph, so better flow volumn im suspecting), and with the diff being right there, figured it only makes sense to change the fluid now. More money than I wanted to put into since I'm selling it, but feel better making it right for the next fox fan lol. Anyway, thank you, again, for your time in puting this together.

      IMO, as long as the info in the video is relevant then its age doesn't matter. Since this isn't a 'current events' or 'pop culture' video and Ford 7.5 & 8.8 diffs are still on the road, this video should have some legs.

    I got my fluid changed about a month ago. It was a fairly difficult job especially with getting the fill plug removed. There was some kind of large metallic piece that made the fill more difficult to get at. Anyway, the job was completed. I sure have a nice shiny cover but I forgot to install a larger magnet like you did - I'll consider doing that at the next change. I installed a regular gasket instead of RTV. I'm always amazed that I don't have leaks after any fluid change.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 2 lety +3

      I wouldn't worry about the larger magnet. It's optional. It will be OK until your next fluid change. I don't think there was a gasket available for the 7.5" diff when I recorded this video. However, it is now and I recently switched to a gasket on that diff and it too hasn't leaked (yet). Fingers crossed for yours and mine.

    I have a 66 mustang with 289 and 2.80 gear 8" differential. Do you know if a 67 mustang 8" differential would bolt up and how can i tell if its limited slip by looking at gears?

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 2 lety

      I'm not sure if it will bolt up. I've never worked on those vintage Mustangs or dfferentials. Re Open vs LSD: jack up the rear of the car and spin one of the rear tires. If the other wheel spins in the opposite direction you have an Open Differential (like in this video). If it spins in the same direction you have a limited slip differential. Hope that helps. Good luck.

    How much oil should I purchase? as told I should pick up some Royal Purple 75W140 for my daughter's stock 94' 5.0L Mustang GT.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 6 lety

      The brand really doesn't matter. It is the weight/viscosity that does. 75W-140 should be fine. A little thick, but should be OK. I run 75W-90. Your owners/service manual should indicate how much oil you need. But it is typically around 2 to 3 quarts. Fill until oil starts coming out the fill hole. If, when you are done, you have an unused quart, just return it. If it has a Limited Slip Differential then make sure to get 8oz of friction modifier from your local auto parts store too and put that in before adding oil. Good luck.

    Hope you can answer this please. I'm replacing the pinion bearings and races, when setting the backlash and contact pattern without the crush sleeve .. what would you say the preload should be at that stage? I know I should look for around 24 in/lb for the final re assembly. Maybe 5 or 8 in/lb less? (ranger 7.5 open diff)

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 6 lety +1

      Sorry, I'm not entirely sure on what the spec is. I don't have my service manual handy at the moment. I'd pick up the factory service manual for your year/model ride and use it's procedure & specs. It will pay for itself with this job alone. You might be able to find one free online if your Google-Fu is strong. Otherwise you can order one from your local ford dealer or get a used one off eBay. Avoid Chiltons & Haynes manuals. They are the cliffs notes of manuals, IMO. Good luck.

    I watched this video and the transmission fluid video. My dealership can change transmission and differential fluids within 5 hours. What type of gasket sealant do they use to be able to make those changes so quickly?

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 9 lety

      Sandbag1300, they are either not letting the RTV cure for long enough (takes an hour for it to start curing and 24 hours for it to be fully cured) or they could be using Permitex Right Stuff. I haven't used 'Right Stuff' yet, but I've heard good things about it and that it has a very quick curing/drying cycle compared to RTV. Either way, it doesn't take 5 hours of labor to change the tranny & diff fluid. So the dealer is probably charging you for hours that the truck is sitting in the parking lot waiting for the sealant to cure.

    • @Sandbag1300
      @Sandbag1300 Před 9 lety

    @genericdude6551 Před 2 lety

    I'm confused. My 02 GT owners manual states that the rear axle fluid isn't to be changed or checked unless the axle has been immersed in water. Or when service is required - what does that mean?

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 2 lety

      Oil does not last forever. Especially when been mashed in a gear system like a differential. Even more if its a Limited Slip Differential because of the clutch material getting in the oil. The rule of thumb is to change it every 60k miles. It also gives you an opportunity to inspect the gears to make sure there isn't any excessive wear or play (all signs of a problem). At a minimum you should check the level every once and a while. Especially if there is a leak at the axle seals, diff cover, vent tube or pinion seal. Hope that helps.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 5 lety +1

      No, you don't have to wait if you use a gasket. RTV requires time to cure. A gasket does not have that problem.

  • @genericdude6551
    @genericdude6551 Před 2 lety

    If you're lucky, you'll have 2 metallic tags on your rear axle that tells you what type of fluid to use as well as details as to what the OEM gear ratio is and the gear size (i.e. 8.8). Turns out that my 02 Mustang has both tags attached. It'll be a good idea to reattach those tags when you reattach or replace the cover. I suppose some mechanics don't bother reattaching the tags. I noticed one of the tags were missing in this video (the one on the drivers side that has the required fluid type).

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 2 lety

      I didn't know there was a second tag for the fluid. I haven't seen a diff with one. That would be nice. Ifs common for these tags to break or rust away.,

  • @genericdude6551
    @genericdude6551 Před 2 lety

    You're the second video that says the service manual says to use 80W90 while mine says 75W140 for an 8.8 differential. One of the tags attached to my differential also says to use 75W140 full synthetic. I have a 2002 Mustang GT with a tag that identifies the differential as 8.8 inch. My manual did say that a 7.5 inch differential takes 80W90 but I thought you were working on an 8.8. This is why I watch these DIY tutorials several times before committing to doing the work.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 2 lety +1

      This diff is a 7.5". I double checked my factory service manual for this '98 Ford Mustang and it does not distinguish between the 7.5 & 8.8 in the chart for type of fluid. It just says to use 80W90, and to add friction modifier if the diff is a limited slip diff (which the one in the video is not). Either way, if your diff has a tag stating what type of oil to use I would use it.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 9 lety

      james aylor, if your differential is a limited slip differential then you need to add limited slip additive. However, if you have an open differential then you don’t. Check the identification tag on the differential cover to find out. If you don’t have the tag, contact your local Ford dealer’s parts department with your VIN and they should be able to tell you what type of differential you have (if your diff is the stock diff). Typically you add about 8oz of the additive. When you are about to refill the diff, put the additive in first and then the oil until it starts coming out the fill hole. Good luck...

      Correct, if you are worried the fill plug may not come loose due to rust/corrosion/whatever, then yes you should loosen it first before draining the oil and there is no turning back. However, it's more of a precaution than a rule. Some areas have this issue more than others. It's fairly rare for it to be an issue that penetrating lube and/or heat couldn't solve even in places with high rust. But there are always those horror stories on the Interwebs...

      No, not really. You want to tighten it down till it starts to squish out like I show in the video. Once it dries you can snug them down again a little if you like (1/4 to 1/2 turn). Don't crank down on them though or you could warp the pan. The RTV tube should have similar instructions, I will default to the instructions on the tube though. Most RTV takes 24 hours to cure to a point where you can put fluid in the diff. Permatex Right Stuff has a lot shorter cure time, for example. Good luck.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 8 lety +1

      +Nathan Borja, LSD’s require the friction modifier or you’ll burn up the clutch packs. Some oil manufacturers include the modifier in their gear oils. I’m not sure if Royal Purple does. I know Amsoil does, and I think Mobile-1. The wine, however, is most likely an out of spec lash adjustment. You need to properly adjust the lash with the correct shims etc or the gears won’t mesh correctly. Diff gears are not a drop in/bolt on part. An oil change after the break in period is a good idea even if there wasn’t a wining noise. Good luck...

      I'm not entirely sure. Its been a while since I did this service. It was somewhere between 170k & 180k miles I think. No it was not making a whining noise. If yours is that is typically due to the diff backlash being out of adjustment. Good luck.

      Pet Rock's Garage are there videos that explain how to fix this? Can it be done leaving diff on car? Any special tools? And its more like a hum when excellerating and not real loud...not sure its necessary or critical. ...dont drive car much.. cost?,time.? Ps i am a pretty good dyi guy,but not a professional tech thanks

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 6 lety +1

      There are a bunch of videos about how to set the backlash on a diff. It can be done with the diff on the car. Yes, there are special tools and it's a time consuming, trial & error, type operation. Not a novice job by any means. Its super easy to mess up and expensive to fix if you get it wrong. If the backlash is the problem, it is honestly worth taking it into a shop and having it done. Seriously.
      Alternatively, if it is a hum it could be your tire tread is out of round or not inflated properly. You can rule that out by rotating your tires fronts to back & backs to front and see if the sound stops or changes. or it could be a bad axle bearing or bad bearing in the diff. I have a video on how to change the axle bearings & spider gears in the diff, but not one on the bearings inside the diff. btw, I'm assuming you checked for play in the spider gears like I show in the video when you had the cover off because they too could cause noise but mostly when turning.

    • @roadstar499
      @roadstar499 Před 6 lety

      Pet Rock's Garage definitely not tires,but could be a bearing or any other diff issue...need to drive it today and take it to my friends shop and get his opinion on if it'd worth tearing appart or not...thanks for all your suggestions....

    2007 Mustang GT come with a 7.5 or a 8.8 rear differential?

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm pretty sure its an 8.8 since it's a GT. If you don't have the info tag on the one of the bolts on the diff cover, you can call your local Ford Dealer's parts department, give them your VIN and they should be able to tell you what it came from the factory with. Otherwise you could just measure the ring gear inside the diff case. If its diameter is 8.8" then it's an 8.8 diff. Good luck.

      Hey thanks for the quick answer, I just bought my 2007 GT with 60,000 Miles and i'm wondering all the maintenance I have to do. I have a small leak on the differential and I wanted to understand the most before servicing it, even buying the fluids necessary to do so before hand (SAE 75W-140?/friction modifier). Also was thinking on buying a new cover differential (chrome) since includes the new gasket.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 7 lety +3

      Congrats on the new (to you) ride. 60k miles is barely broken in, IMO. I would change all the fluids (engine, tranny, diff & brake fluid). You don't know if they were ever changed by the previous owner. Change the diff cover if you want, but no-one is going to ever see it unless you get air going over a hill or something. Also, gaskets are super cheap on their own. Use whatever fluids your owners manual says to use. Your choice on synthetic vs regular oil. I typically go with synthetics. You only need friction modifier if you have a Limited Slip Differential. You can tell if you do with the rear off the ground. Spin one of the tires. If the opposite side tire spins the same direction you have an LSD. If it spins the opposite direction you have an Open differential, which doesn't need friction modifier. Good luck.

      Hey! I'm back :) , just watched your video again to refresh the procedure since I attempted to change the fluid tomorrow, today I'd removing the differential cover, cleaning the gears with brake cleaner, and so on... I was rechecking where and how to put the fluid, I don't have the adapter you used so I'm guessing I need to come up with something tomorrow, any suggestions? also I place a new chrome cover, this one came with a gasket, since I saw you didn't use any I was wondering if it was really necessary? I placed it any ways, I't was strange to see this gasket for me because it was really flexible, not like other gasket I've seen for other parts that are made of metal and are very rigid and strong. I also forgot to clean the cap that helps release the gas and temperature from the inside of differential, I will sure do that tomorrow. Thanks again for this video, please let me know any comment or recommendation you think appropriate.

      You can pick up a pump like the one I used at your local auto parts store for under $10. I recently picked up a new one at AutoZone, but others should have it too. As for the gasket, you can use one if you want. It came from the factory with RTV, but you can use either one. Definitely clean the air vent cap on the axle tube sooner rather then later. You don't want pressure to build up in the diff and blow out a gasket causing a leak.

    Would ultra grey max torque work? And pouring by the bottle?

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, ultra grey should work. I'm not sure what you mean by "pouring by the bottle". You keep filling until oil starts coming out the filler hole. You will most likely have some left over oil in the bottle when you're done.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  Před 4 lety +1

      @@ulisesc4388, there isn't a lot of room under there. If you jack up the car and let the rear diff hang you will get some more room but it will be a P.I.T.A. It is much easier with a pump. Pump adapters for bottles are pretty cheap and available at most auto parts stores. Good luck.

    • @petrocksgarage

      Unless your old oil was full of metal particles or you also forgot to clean the magnet, I wouldn't worry about forgetting to spray brake cleaner inside the housing. Just make sure to do it next time. These diffs don't come with drain plugs from the factory. You have to remove the pan to drain the oil out or install a pan with a drain plug built in. Hope that helps.

      daniel griffin, yeah, its the Diff ID tag to tell you what size & ratio of gears are inside your differential. It’s pretty important if you need to buy parts to service it. There are a bunch of different gear combo’s for 7.5 & 8.8 differentials.

      It says to use ATF fluid with MERCON, which isn't the same as ATF with MERCON V. That is assuming your car has the stock (T5?) manual transmission in it of course. Good luck.
