A Conversation and Where the Lost Things Go also made me cry because of just how true it is to my own story. My mom died when I was 6, and my sisters and I really had to grow up a lot. My dad lost his job soon after and has never really gotten better after her death. My heart breaks for him everyday. I wish that this movie had come out when I was younger, but it is still a bittersweet reminder that I don't have to work so hard all the time, and I wish my dad could see that, too. Me,too. (I wish the great Jimmy Durante, singer of FROSTY THE SNOWMAN special, and still alive and working back then, had sung the song) It's Walt Disney's AND P.L.Traver's favorite. Walt loved it, made the last years (till his 1966 death,. and his ashes in the grav,e or spirit)), of his life bearable. He told whichever Sherman Brother wrote it, "That'll replace BRAHM'S LULLABYE".

They're really two independent films that stand beautifully on their own. It's not really a sequel so much as a new film that has some very nice nods to the 1964 classic. Both of them have very touching elements. I can't count how many times I've cried listening to "Feed the Birds." I had a similar reaction to "Where the Lost Things Go." I love that they both have important lessons about kindness and love. I think both were released at a time when we all needed something to help us feel good and remind us that there is a bigger picture and story. My own personal feeling is I love both films.

You remember near the end of MPR that "Mr. Dawes Jr." was telling the children about their father's account money; the whole thing was about the relationship between the children and their father to tie up the loose ends that established their own father's relationship towards their Grandfather who was in the first film.

      @HeatherNickless-vt8zr Před rokem

I could understand why Julie Andrews would not want to cameo in MPR and aside from the fact that she was also too old to play the lead part anyway; We haven't seen her in a new film since "The Princess Diaries 2". The only thing that really bothers me and every other 'Poppins fans is why they did not bother recasting the role of the birdwoman?

Of course the sequel was never going to be as good as the original. We all knew this! But I still loved it and was super happy with the result. Nothing can beat Julie Andrews, but Emily Blunt was amazing and I loved her version. And I loved the music and the costumes and sets in the new one. It felt like a continuation story, which is what I wanted. You can love them both!

Objection! Blunt's take on Mary Poppins, inspired by the version from the books is the superior Poppins. While not exactly like the literary Mary Poppins (that character would be hard to like on screen), her playing up of Mary's various flaws and eccentricities creates a good middle ground between Andrews's version and Travers's. The end result is a surprisingly complex character. She's strict, vain , haughty, sharp and a little batty but is also capable of showing surprising emotional depth at times (like when she's singing "The Place Where Lost Things Go"). Look, Julie Andrews is great and all. Blunt's Mary Poppins has more character, though.

Original Mary Poppins was of the heart, and convinced Mr. Banks that money isn't everything, rather to fly a kite, feed the birds, and spending time with his family. Mary Poppins Returns centered around money, and the savings of the house. It also had threads that had little, if anything to do with moving the plot along. I see no comparison at all. The writing in MP Returns gave nearly opposite messages, one towards altruism and the other towards materialism.

I love both movies as most everyone does (those who loved the first one, seem to also enjoy and love this new one too). However; being totally honest with myself, as hard as it is for me to say it, I have to go with Emily Blunt's, Mary. She portrays a character that's more in line with the one described in the original books, she's more blunt/"frank", more stern, more vein, and has a more complex personality. Also; for me the number one reason I like her portrayal of this character better is, her ability to embrace the magic she possess. In the first movie, Burt has to practically beg her to do her magic, at times she seems almost embarrassed by it, and of course denies it all together when confronted. The "new" Mary, really seems to enjoy the fact that she has magic powers, and does not have to be begged by anyone to use them. Take for example her actions and reactions in the scene where she introduces us to the song: "Can you imagine that?!" As she sings the song, she sets up the magical adventure they're about to have by tossing in several items into the bath tub, after the children fall into the bath and disappear; she says with a wide heartfelt smile, "and away we go!" She's totally into it! I love that about her, and for me, she beats out Julie Andrew's version of Mary Poppins. Hard to admit, but true. IMO.

Yes I know it was established near the beginning of MPR that Bert was taking a trip around the world; he could've been on his last leg by midway through the film's events. Judging by the movie's story's timing I'd say he'd been back for the first few days of the second week Mary Poppins had been in her charge with the children since he landed that last saturday of the previous week; that would've given Bert plenty of time to set up that little charade.

Stop trying to compare which is better. The original is always going to be on top as it’s a classic. Every kid even in this generation has watched Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins Returns did what many sequel of old classics couldn’t do, it shines in its own success.
Blunt played her role for Mary Poppins to the way she was in the books and in a way it didn’t steal the limelight away from the original. They didn’t strive to make Mary Poppins Return to be better than the first one. They aimed for it to keep the magic of Mary Poppins alive and which they all did very well.
    The sequel was great.
They kept the magic of the original but they gave it a fresh new energetic feel. As for those that says there was no connection to the music, I call bullshit. If you stop trying to compare them to the original score, you’ll see the connections and the meanings for each song.
I was blown away by how well the movie flowed and the messages it brings. Grief, depression, lost, failure, strength, loss of innocence. I felt that in every song. No it’s not going to be better than the original but they weren’t trying to.

Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies. I was hoping the sequel would be alright (knowing that it can't compare.)
If I didn't have kids with me, I'd have walked out. It wasn't good. Not gonna go into comparing actors and whatnot, the main letdown for me what that the original didn't fall into the tired 'heroes and villains' trope. Yes, there were the bankers but it was minor. Much like 'my neighbor totoro' for example, where the crux is the family.
The remake on the other hand is simply derivative. Racing against the clock so not to lose the house... Come on. Anyway, the new movie will be forgotten in a few years and the original will still be popular decades from now.

I agree that Julie is a better Poppins than Emily Blunt, but I actually liked the songs of the sequel better than the original, as I found them more joyful overall, whereas the original had a melancholy sound to it at times, which to me, permeates the film too much. Overall, I like the tone of the sequel much better. The only thing I like a bit better about the original was Julie Andrews- and I was going to say Dick Van Dyke too- but he makes an appearance here during a very pivotal moment. So, to me, the remake is better overall, though they are both very special films.

The original Mary Poppins is "practically perfect in every way" as a musical, but as Mary Poppins, not even close. Yes, we all enjoyed the movie and songs (especially "Chim Chimeree" and "Feed the Birds," but to any child raised on the Mary Poppins books, I could understand P L Travers' horror at the smiling, bouncing, singing nanny. The second movie was good, if still too cheery, and at least, captured more details from the books. Both good movies, neither one a true Mary Poppins, which I reread periodically, all four, at an age I won't disclose. Needless to say, I'm well familiar with the grumpy, gruff magical nanny. Never offered a spoonful of sugar, but gave the Banks' children far more. Always enjoy your videos!
