I am surprised he didn't mention this, but it's also pretty refreshing that Dick Van Dyke's character and Mary Poppins DON'T get together. It's kind of nice that they have a very strong connection to each other, and they could easily have made them fall in love, but they don't ever kiss or do much more than dance together and talk.
They kind of are together, though. Bert flirts with Mary for an entire song, and Mary gets jealous when he mentions other women. She's just too busy being a witch/sorceress to settle down.

So true! I'm tired of random useless hookups/dating/getting together in movies. If it's not part of the plot but still really adds to the characters that's fine, but most of it is unneeded and annoying.
I never thought they were together at all. I didn't see him flirting, they were just being proper. And when he said she was the best, I saw that as a friend thing too. He was saying she's the best woman he knows. She's jealous because she wants to be the most perfect.
Jane Darwell, the Academy Award-winning actress that played the Bird Woman, had been retired for years when she signed on to this film. At 83 and in poor health, she only agreed to the role after Walt Disney personally visited her at her retirement home and entreated her to play the role. She was his first and only choice for the portrayal. The song itself was Walt's personal favorite of any song ever produced by Disney. It was her final appearance on the silver screen (5 years after her previous appearance) and I think we can all agree it's about as beautiful of a send-off as anyone can hope for.

Adahop And it's not even her voice you hear when she speaks; she was too weak for that. Even though it was very brief - just two short scenes - it's one of her most memorable roles.

Van Dyke´s accent is bad but his acting is so good it goes by unnoticed. This is probably my favorite live action Disney film ever.
I grew up with this movie long before I knew what a cockney accent was. So, by the time I did know, I couldn't really care less about how good or bad his accent was because of how well he played the character.

Dick Van Dyke didn't try to do an accent when he played another English character a few years later in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." I assume either he or the director realized his natural accent was less distracting.

Man, I know I'm a Disneyphile, so it might be just me, but it is so cool to see Dick Van Dyke now. He is still the same crazy, fun guy as back then. I mean, he DANCED on his 91st birthday IN DISNEYLAND! Not much better than that.

The accent is really awful, but the performance and movie otherwise is genuinely brilliant. It really doesn't matter, especially if you see the movie as a child or show it to little ones. I loved this movie as a kid and never knew it was a terrible cockney accent until I was old and cynical.
7:23 When I saw this scene, I too thought the Bird Lady had died.
I always took it as like a moral for the movie: When you don't have your purpose somewhere, you move on and find it somewhere else. I always assumed the bird woman moved to another place to feed more birds, to find more purpose in life. It's sort of what I thought throughout this movie. It's the same with Mary, when she's not needed she leaves, but then Mr Banks finds his purpose somewhere else.
But that's just my thoughts :3
The actor who played the bird lady did die before the movie was completed. That scene could be for her. I dunno. But knowing that the bird lady really is dead is really sad.

I'm actually pretty pleased that as a child I wasn't the only one who had thought the bird lady had died.
I never thought about it before. But that adds a lot of depth to the story I must say
I always had the impression that Van Dyke was deliberately over doing the accent as part of the character, sort of like how Johnny Depp exaggerated his mannerisms in the PotC movies. Yes, it was over the top and cheesy, but everything about that character was done to the Nth degree.

This just popped into my head Mary Poppins was like a female version of Willy Wonka. The way Critic describes her is almost identical to the way he spoke about Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. She is mysterious, she had a plan all along, she is kind and has patience but only for what matters to her. She is in control the entire time.

I can't believe P.L. Travis actually hated this movie when it was completed. Walt Disney tried his best to make her happy but in the end, he made everyone else to this day happy except her. All I can say is, thank you Walt Disney. I love this film so much! I even went to see the broadway play twice! This movie is a beautiful masterpiece!
+MickeyFan1928 You know, I can totally understand how hard it can be for an artist to "let go" when it comes to their own creation. There's a scene in Saving Mr Banks where Disney explains to Travis how he adamantly refused to sell Mickey Mouse to another person.
Now, let us face a simple fact : have you ever read any of the books ? How many people have nowadays ? People in their VAST majority only know (and love) Disney's adaptation.
Even though she may not have been the nicest person in the world, I can hardly feel upset at P.L. Travis's reaction to the movie. The character on screen is not HER Mary. It's Disney's.
+invock I've read the first couple of the Mary Poppins books, and I far prefer P.L. Travers' version of Mary to Disney's. It makes me want to see the stage show as apparently it is a closer representation of the written Mary than the film version.

I didn't really like Mary in the books much. Like Jedtavius said, she's a sourpuss, but she is also extremely (and I mean extremely) vain. There are multiple scenes in the book where she obsesses over her appearance.
And the books themselves are meh. The first one was okay, but my liking drained when I realized that the second book was almost exactly the same.
Rose Blossom Mary was kind of vain in the film too, she replaced the mirror with a bigger one
I remember when I was little and I watched the "Step In Time" sequence for the first time, I was just kinda sitting there smiling and energetically bouncing in my seat the whole time. After it was over, I really did have to take a breath XP

Spot on that ending where mr Banks is walking to his job knowing he's going to loose it is just pure perfection in everyway. Theirs no dialogue its just a man walking to his job knowing full well what's going to happen and that music while he's walking is just wow. I really believe that scene is the best is movie history and that is a huge compliment.
I just love how the Doug talks about this movie, with that pasion and love, it is amazing

+falloutghoul1 Doctor who was around long before she was. And there is absolutely nothing magical about him. How about next time you make an attempt at knowing what the fuck you're talking about before you post some dumb shit. It's been on for 50 fucking years, where the hell have you been?
+Brooks Raguse guess what? You're wrong. While the movie might have come after the start of the Doctor (not long either) but Mary Poppins was a series of books long before anyone even bothered to commission a show that would become Dr Who.
It's possible that Dr Who could have borrowed elements from this world as the writer lived in England & published in England. I don't think it's the case at all but I think before you go throwing comments like yours above that maybe you should do a little research too

I always thought Mary and Bert a couple as a kid, but not the conventional one. I saw her as an entity of pure magic that comes and goes for as long as she is needed somewhere or not, and so she tries to not tie connections with the kids she attends to because it's always about the kids finding their way to their parents and she is "forgotten" and not needed anymore. But Bert seems to be the only recurrent person she sees often. She is a vagabond of sorts, same as he is, so when they turn out to be by coincidence at the same place and at the same time, they live the hell out of the time they have until her job is done. And then he sees her go, and his smile is what truly keeps her going onto the next task she has, until they see each other again. It's like they know they can't "be" together, but at the same time, they are, which is wonderful because it shows that friendship and love aren't always that different one from the other. It's healthy, it's empowering, it's really inspiring and so damn unique. Maybe I read too much about them as a kid, but what do I care, this movie is just flawless.

It's amazing how the movie's biggest hater was the author of the book. She hated the movie so much that she left the premier in tears. For one, she wanted Mary to be almost abusive, and she wanted the mother to just plain be neglectful instead of given an understandable reason for being not so involved with her kids.
I happen to think this movie is perfect. Just freaking perfect.
I can understand not being able to let go of a creation you were so happy with, but I'd be lying if I said the books had the charm the movie did.

I love the songs in this movie but I've always had such a strong connection with Let's Go Fly A Kite. It's like a theme song to my childhood, my life, my relationship with my dad, and so much more. It's so sweet.
That Feed the Birds song still makes me cry, even as a guy in his mid-twenties. I think Disney put the last of his soul into that song. It still makes this impact on me that I can't even explain. It's just a perfect heartstring-tugger.

One of the best stories and movies ever! I still walk around humming the songs from time to time.
One obscure thing I like the most about this movie is that it doesn't shy away from illustrating the lines between adults and children. The medicine that the kids take is from the same bottle she drinks. But, hers is rum punch, while theirs is candy. And, the scene at the races shows a nice G rated romantic outing between Mary and Burt without the kids around.
One of the few musicals I actually like.

This timeless beloved wonderful masterpiece even has a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes; it truly is "practically perfect in every way." I love this movie so much, it's definitely in my top favorite Disney movies of all time.
I am not joking - every. single. time. the scene comes up when Mr. Banks goes to the steps of St. Paul's and the bird lady is not there, it still is a giant gut punch and instantly makes me burst into tears. Including while watching this right now. This is a genius movie and my childhood in a nutshell!!!
Even if the accent isn’t that great, it still does little to keep Dick Van Dyke from being so lovable in this movie. His energy, his performance, and his charm just knocks it out of the park just as much as Julie Andrews has done. Both are just an absolute joy together and I absolutely agree with Doug’s words; that this is a MAGICAL movie. It truly is.
I am also very happy that this upcoming Mary Poppins is going to be a sequel and not a remake. Just shows that the studio perfectly understands that nothing will ever top the original and that at least you can recapture the magic with a different story, new ideas, and new characters.

Edit: Now that you mention it, when Mr. Banks goes over to the empty cathedral steps, it used to make me think the same thing -- she died (thanks again for the tears, Disney!) Now I realize if he'd let Michael give her the tuppence earlier, the incident in the bank wouldn't have taken place -- thus he would have kept his job. And the bird lady would have money! lol

This is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time.
My favorite memory associated with this film is my dad buying me the VHS from Sav-Ons and me going home to watch it. My jaw was on the floor the whole time.
I'm gonna put it this way, this is the only Disney live-action movie made before 1995 that I've ever heard about before. That's how good it is

I can't think of anybody who hasn't heard of it at least just for the infamous ending. Please tell me know of at least one of these. My Dad used to show them to me all the time. (we even named our Dachshund Chloe after one of the Dachshunds)

Wow... So I haven't seen this movie for at LEAST 10 years, but hearing Feed the Birds again actually brought me to tears. I loved Mary Poppins when I was little and must have watched it a hundred times. I'd almost forgotten about it at this point, but this review just brought all those memories rushing back. I guess that's nostalgia for you.

I just love Nostalgia Critic's Disneycember on Mary Poppins, I always felt something while watching the scene with Mr. Banks, and only Doug could explain it so perfectly it made my feelings make sense! Truly one of my favorite movies.
This film is one of the most important movies I've ever seen. It has a permanent spot in my top 10!
This review actually brought a tear to my eye. And I don't mean that figuratively, I mean one of my eyes actually got a physical tear in it by the end. It was all I could do to not cry at the part where Doug speculates that the bird woman might have passed away, and I haven't cried or even come close to crying in 10 years, almost to the day! Thank you for this, and I sincerely apologize for the garbage that is Mary Poppins Returns.

This is probably my favorite disney film as well. Like Doug, I watched this ALL THE TIME. I didnt have the excuse of not having much choice, I just really really loved this film! Everything you said, far more eloquently than I could is absolutely true. It was just perfect. This is a disney film that deserves to be a legend for all time. I know how the original author or whoever despised it, but I cant bring myself to care, as there is no way this would have worked as well if it had been a faithful adaptation.
Yep, Doug said exactly how I think and feel about this movie. Saw it when I was about 4 maybe? Still one of my favorite movies after all these years. I'm going to be 40 soon, and even just seeing Julie Andrews on a talk show (Grahm Norton comes to mind recently) I get the nostalgic twinge in my eyes :)
Watching Saving Mr Banks made me open my eyes about this film. The scene where she says "you think she saves the children" laughs and then a moment of silence hit me so hard.

I think this is probably the greatest Disney movie of all time. It blends everything that Disney was supposed to be about and it does it perfectly. The acting, the characters, the songs, the dancing, the animation. Everything. There's plenty of Disney movies I love more than this but this one still has a special place in my heart.
Awesome review! I'll be straight-up honest. When I was a kid, I absolutely hated this movie. I grew up with all the animated Disney films and I wasn't introduced to any of the live action ones. So I hated the fact that it was over 2 hours longs, couldn't get the concept, and hardly any animation for my liking. Oddly enough I enjoyed the sing-alongs from some of my early Disney Sing-Along tapes...weird :/ Anyways, as 2011-2012 came along, I just happened to come across it on TV and decided to give it another shot. 'Til this day if I have time to see the DVD or watch the rest on TV, it has to be put on. That's how much I am in love with this movie now. I will never part with it :)

Love this movie interesting thing is this was my grandmothers favorite movie and she got me to watch it when I was a little kid. back in like 1989 or 1990 probably my second favorite Julie Andrew film number one would have to be sound of music.
I don't know what feels better, the feeling I get when I watch this movie or hearing Doug gush over the movie as much as I do.

I recently saw The Sound of Music for the first time and it reminded me a lot of this film. Not just the casting of Julie Andrews as a Nanny looking after the children of an emotionally distant father, but also the way it so effortlessly melds the fun world of the film and crushing realities, The Sound of Music being the effects of Anschluss and the approaching Nazi occupation of Europe, and this one being the effects of growing up and the depressing world in which the story’s adults live
When I get anxiety, I come back and watch this video. It brings out all the charm of Mary Poppins and just Disney in general, and it just helps me feel calm and happy.

one of my all time favorite movies. i can watch it over and over and never get tired of it. it just sucks you in till the very end of the movie. the songs are just amazing. just a great movie in every aspect.

Fact with me: I always cry during Feed the Birds. Easily my favourite song in the film and this is one of my favourite films of all time.
If he hasn't already seen it, Doug should have a look at "Saving Mr Banks", a movie about the making of "Mary Poppins" with Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as the author who wrote the original stories, P.L. Travers.
A Nostalgia Critic review of that movie could be interesting and fun, especially considering Doug's nostagic feelings for "Mary Poppins"
This movie is damn near perfect.
My family and I are kinda shut off from each other, each going to their own room to do whatever. I went to my mother's room to ask her something and she was watching this. I ended up forgetting what I went in there for and sat down to watch it with her. Before long, my brother and nephew walked by the room and came in and started watching too. Before long, everyone in the house was in that room, some sitting on the bed others sitting on the floor, but every last one of us was in that room together watching Mary Poppins and enjoying every moment of it.

4:56 reminds me of something, the other day, myself and my family were watching this film after years and years of not watching it and I was really enjoying the live action/animation sequence, mainly because I was fondly remembering really enjoying it as a little kid. However, my parents mentioned that they thought the sequence was too pointless and purposeless. A few scenes later, Banks and Mary Poppins are singing about the outings Poppins has been taking the children on when Banks says the lines, ' If they must go on outings, these outings ought to be fraught with purpose, yes, and practicality! These silly words like superca… superca… superca… and popping through pictures have little use, fulfill no basic need!'
These lines mirrored what my parents said about the animated sequence being pointless and purposeless. I thought it was funny that as a kid I loved that animated sequence but my parents couldn't appreciate what I saw in it as a kid. It completely reflects the difference in what Mr Banks and his children appreciate in life, a theme from the film was coming true in my own house as we watched it, dunno I just thought that was interesting.
I didn’t watch this movie as a kid and because of this I watched it for the first time a few days ago when I got Disney plus for Christmas. And I love musicals. This movie was just wow. I have no words. Why the heck did I wait so long to watch it?

As a kid (and sometimes even now), when Admiral Boom is about to fire his "time gun", I would act out going to my post and shaking as if it were happening. And, as an adult, "Fly a Kite" always brings a tear to my eye.
This movie makes me weep for my childhood. I've watched this movie when I was 4, maybe 5 years old. I'm 20 now and I still live this film even if it's been over a decade since I last saw it. one of these days I want to watch this movie from beginnig to end just like the good ol days.

Couldn't agree more. I work a VERY blue collar job and even with all the pressure and swearing that goes on in that type of atmosphere I still find songs from this movie in my head from time to time. Amazing how it instilled in me a literal inability to lose touch with my childhood
I rewatched this recently as well. I went through a phase where I couldn't stand this film, but the "I love to laugh" song remains one of my happiest childhood memories, and oh boy, not only did I love that sequence, I loved the entire film surrounding it! 10/10

I watched this movie for the first time recently, and it's one of if not THE best Disney Movie I've Ever Seen, it's freaking fantastic, I love how jolly and positive it is even the ending left a smile on my face, I would have to say Bert and Mr. Banks were my favorite characters in Mary Poppins, I love how jolly and how full of life and energy Bert is, and I love Mr. Banks's character change at the end of the movie, I highly recommend this movie
Practically perfect in every way.
It reminds me of this; I grew up with this movie as a kid. My mom was born the same year the movie came out, and she loved it in her youth. When I was little, she would always show me Disney movies and Mary Poppins was amongst the most I watched. As a kid, I thought Mr. Banks was mean but could be a good guy - as an adult in my mid 20s, I feel so bad for him and the children.
I feel what makes this movie timeless and unique are that you can see it differently as a child and adult and yet they would both be right, and that it isn’t like with the 90s comedians trying to be good parents moral movies; it was that, sometimes, by the time you’re ready, it’ll be too late, so enjoy the time you have because you’ll never know if you’ll get it ever again. Least that’s what I took from it.
Either way, I will always love this movie no matter what. And considering how much of an impact it’s made, I hope it continues for more years to come.

I think the only person who didn't like this movie was P. L. Travers, the author of the book it's based on.
One of my favourites. It’s such a lovely Movie..
When I was in elementary school, usually before Christmas or summer vacations they'd turn the cafeteria/gym into a sort of makeshift movie theater with an old projector they had. They only had two films for it, Mary Poppins and the Cat from Outer Space. Not only did the latter leave little impact on me, but when asked which of the two we'd want to watch, even if we saw it already that year we'd all almost unanimously choose Mary Poppins (sometimes they'd show both, but usually the first half of the day was devoted to finishing actual school stuff).
So not only is this movie great for all the reasons you listed, but I also connect it to the moments of sitting with friends just before being let out of school to fun for a little while on the floor of the gym, usually with a theme like "indoor picnic" or "school pajama party" so we'd be dressed comfortably on top of that. I grew up in a very small town, but imagine being a little kid in a room with a few dozen other kids, in almost a movie theater, while also sitting or laying on your favorite blanket or sleeping bag and wearing your PJs or most comfy outdoor clothes, just enjoying this movie. It was a small gesture that took a great movie to something mindblowing for most of us, and the kind of silly and fun contrast of being in your PJs and having a personal movie theater but also still being at school and not totally free yet just seems like the ideal setting to enjoy something like this. I still can't see it without remembering being six or seven with my blanket or sleeping bag overlapping my friends', loving it as we enjoyed our snacks or lunch.
From age six to thirty six, it's physically impossible for me to hear the bridge from 'Feed the Birds' without getting the chills.
Some of the best moments for me:1. Step in Time (Dick Van Dyke is not a dancer...but you couldn't tell that from seeing the scene!!! Praise!)2. The house being shaken by Admiral Booms alarms and the family running to keep things from crashing, but to them its totally normal!3. Mr. Banks walking to the bank (tears!). the score is phenomenal....period.4. Feed the Birds5. The Animated Jolly Holiday scene.
