    Ya know, I always thought that Burt was someone Marry Poppins had known when he was very young. Like she had come to his family at one point to help them, and her influence turned his world on its head and made him the man he was in the film. Happy, silly, jack of all trades, artistic, just enjoying life moment by moment. And every time Marry comes around, his world gets a little bit brighter because he knows someone else is getting a glimpse into the magic that made his life good

      That theory has been around for decades. Look at his lyrics in Supercaliyouknowtheword. Assuming he's sharing his actual background, Bert had an abusive childhood until he learned that special word. Who do you think taught him? He never questions when odd things happen... because he already knows what she can do? In all his sucky jobs, he always stays cheerful, happy to do his work. And how would he know the weather conditions that bring Mary Poppins, if he hadn't seen it all before?

      As for Mary helping him as a child I doubt it. She`s too much of a snob to work for the lower classes, and they couldn`t afford her anyway.

      She does appear to be an upper class woman, but there's no guarantee that's how she always looks for every family she goes to. She is a magical being, so for all we know she could change her clothes and even physical form to suit the family she's helping.

    Love this movie so much. And here's some trivia- "Feed the Birds" is said by many-even by both Richard and Robert Sherman- to be Walt Disney's favorite song. I have the soundtrack to this movie and there's an interview with the brothers as the last track. In that interview, they tell the story of how every Friday Walt would call them up to his office and they'd talk about what's going on at the studio and in their lives, etc..then Walt would turn to Richard and say "Play it" and Richard knew what he meant and he'd go play the song for him. They say that Walt said in response ot the song something akin to "That's what it's about isn't it..the smallest act of kindness can go a long way to making a big impact on someone or someplace."

There is a rumour that the author's name has been removed from Little House on the Prarie reprints because of the themes within and political correctness wants to do it with Mark Twain.
    I'm sorry, but this is history. While it may be uncomfortable to think about by today's standards, it gives an insight into how far we have come. The same goes for To Kill a Mockingbird.
    The themes and complex issues the reader learns about alongside the character, including, racism, class divide and how one holds to his own principle of what is right, despite the beliefs held by others is what makes it a classic.

I didn't then, and don't now, agree with many things in the books, but I still think they offer a valuable view into a period in history. Well, it certainly was a tough year for all the nominees. In the best actor in a leading role they nominated Anthony Quinn as Zorba (probably *the* part is remembered for), Peter Sellers as three different characters in Dr. Strangelove (a better comedian than an actor), the always watchable Peter O'Toole (8 nominations never a winner) and Richard Burton (7 nominations never a winner). Rex Harrison was a worthy winner though.
      I'm not sure I understand what you mean or whether you're misinformed - Audrey Hepburn wasn't nominated at all in the category best actress in a leading role. Were people outraged Audrey Hepburn wasn't even nominated? She was a modest and gracious woman who definitely wouldn't have felt offended herself.
      I also believe that My Fair Lady was better than Mary Poppins and a more worthy Best Picture winner. That being said it was also a very tough year for nominated films. Personally I believe Stanley Kubrick's cold war dark comedy "Dr. Strangelove - Or How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb." is one of the best movies ever made and in an ideal world it would have won - as would Kubrick for Best Director. Anyways, I can also totally understand how it didn't win considering the sensitive political climate at the time and mostly young people enjoying it.
      Julie Andrews really was on top of the world with Mary Poppins and then the huge success of Sound of Music the following year.

    Another few things I heard about this movie is that Julie Andrews didn't take the film at first because it was too similar to The Sound of Music (a movie she did prior I think) and Angela Lansbury was considered for the role of Mary Poppins too I think. Even think even Audrey Hepburn was considered for Mary Poppins.

    • @colind3273
      @colind3273 Před 5 lety +1

      It's the opposite. She nearly didn't take The Sound of Music because she had just played a nanny in Poppins. Her baby daughter, Emma, was with her in Austria during filming....which is the reason she wasn't socializing with Christopher Plummer and Charmian Carr during their down time. Extra trivia.....Charmian Carr was the only actor among the "children" old enough to drink! She was 21.

      @@colind3273 oh yeah! Sorry for that mixup there. Thanks for clearing that up :) I knew that Charmian Carr was 21 when she played the oldest 'child' which was very interesting nonetheless. Sadly Charmian died A few years ago due to dementia and another actress named Heather (she played one of the younger Von Trapp) died I think in 2018 or 2017 from cancer.

      Well, maybe (on copyright). But books don't translate as well (same with audio--old radio shows, and the Chipmunks since 1958 have entraced folks as characters, so when the albums came out and the 1961 and 1983 show and more recent movies, it's a miracle since people were now SEEING those.Same with books.) And a Nanny doing some of those, the book couldn't do all that, and some of the things had to be made happier (the thing that P.L. also hated a lot..from the SAVING MR.BANKS movie on P.L turning down charming Mary: Tom Hanks as Walt Disney:"No MAGIC, no SUNNINESS..hmmm././THIS comes right from an author well known for flying nannies and parrot umbrellas that talk.! Bad cockney accent or not, the original movie is practically perfect in every way. Not enough has been said about the performance of David Tomlinson as Mr. Banks. He should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

    • @suebob16
      @suebob16 Před 2 lety

      Late reply here. I agree about David Tomlinson's performance as Mr. Banks. He should have received an Oscar nomination as well. I never saw Mr. Banks as the villain, just a father who needed his eyes opened.
      It is actually Bert who finishes the job that Mary started. Mr. Banks had never met Bert until he was cleaning the Banks fireplace. With Mr. Banks at his most vulnerable, it is Bert who gently reminds him that he needs to think about his children--that he needs to get to know his kids and be there for them before they grow up and leave him. Would Mr. Banks have accepted this advice from Mary if she had offered it? I'm not sure, and I'm not sure if Mary would have since she is the employee. Perhaps this is where Bert as the outsider is effectively used. Mary comes in to shake up the Banks household and introduces fun and imagination even though she denies that she is doing it. It is Bert who reminds Mr. Banks about his children and reminds Jane and Michael that their father is a human being and needs their support.

      Julie's baby Emma was born November 1962. The live action filming for Mary Poppins was in the spring and summer of 1963. There was a lot of post-production work to add all the animation so it was not premiered until August 1964. It was on general release in late 1964 and throughout 1965 (often at the same time as the Sound of Music so Julie was competing in two simultaneous hit movies). It won 5 Oscars in spring 1965.
