It's fascinating to see that even with tactical blunders, Barbarossa managed to win battles simply by having disciplined troops,
while the crusader orders and their armies manage to squander major tactical advantages by lack of discipline.
There couldn't be a bigger contrast to illustrate how important military discipline is.
Another major problem with the Christians is they had too much infighting. This made it easier for the enemy to defeat them.
And then he fucking drowned like an idiot.
I mean I just watched some videos of well disciplined roman campaigns and this crusader orders seem like savages to me lol

Richard held the Christian banner high when others fled, and single-handedly kept the Crusader spirit alive. He was the ideal medieval king, fighting side by side with his men, something modern leaders would never do. Saladin was a great leader and commander and it's very symbolic that Saladin passed shortly after the third Crusades ended, it's like he had completed his mission. Saladin was truly the Defender of Islam.
May these names never die!
Saladin used to marvel at the zeal of the Christians,
not sure if he said this himself but every time they killed a Christian a thousand more would come, while the other "Muslim Kings" of his time would sleep over his letters for help.

Richard vs Saladin, really an epic showdown between two really smart generals, neither one of them ready to submit and 16 years long wow simply wow.

Richard was a great general, but very poor ruler.
Seems to me that Richard was the tactician while Saladin was the strategist. Every time they met in battle Richard won but he didn't have much of a plan for using those victories and Saladin was able to bog him down in an endless stalemate just like Vietnam.
Yeah, but part of it is that Richard had to deal with the religious zeal of the Crusaders. He wanted to go for Egypt, not the landlocked and strategically useless Jerusalem, but he had to be realistic about the motivations of his forces.
@@shorewall Yeah, Saladin's biggest advantage was that he commanded a united force under his complete control while Richard was the leader of an alliance of many different European factions that he only had nominal control over.
@@historicalminds6812 As far as I understand it, he DIDN´t take the outlying forts, and that was the problem. He secured only the string of fortifications streching from Jaffa to Jerusalem, but not the ones beyond. So even if he took Jerusalem, the Turks would have had the strategic upper hand as soon as the bulk of the crusaders started to return to Europe after fulfiling their vows.
Taking Egypt was the only way to ensure long term victory, but the majority of comanders and the rank and file troops did not understand that, and in the end even his reputation was not enough to persuade them.

I like how Kingdom of Heaven pretty much gave Saladin his most iconic look. Even the game that sponsored this video uses that movie's version of Saladin as their model. It's a testament to Ridley Scott and the actor who played Saladin in that movie.
In my opinion Saladin was the best aspect of that film. The rest is pretty bad.

Barbarossa and his army reaching the Holy Land would be an interesting turn of events in my opinion.
The discipline of his campaign was inspiring. I like to think that he and Richard would have been alike in terms of discipline and pragmatism.
If he hadn't died, I would say the Crusade wouldn't have failed. Similarly, if Phillip hadn't abandoned the Crusade, failure would have been unlikely. I like to imagine that Frederick, Richard, and Phillip kept each other in check.

Even if we assume that Philip will still return to Europe, if Barbarossa reaches the Holy Land with his entire army, the crusaders might threaten Egypt itself along with Jerusalem.
That is, if the commanders, Richard, and Barbarossa always see eye to eye.

15:45: The Third Crusade...begins!
15:50: The situation in Europe prior to the Third Crusade
17:26: The year 1187
Before 30:28: Siege of Acre in the Summer of 1189 between the Crusaders and Muslims
32:00-38:10: The Holy Roman Empire army coming to the Middle East.
38:15: Continuing the Siege of Acre in the Winter of 1189
40:58: Continuing the Siege of Acre in 1190
49:05: Continuing the Siege of Acre in 1191. France, under Phillip, and England, under Richard, arrive in Acre.

1:11:36: The Third Crusaders advance toward Jerusalem.
1:17:48: But! In early 1192, the leadership of the Third Crusade decides to not siege Jerusalem because of the high risk in doing so
1:24:56: The Third Crusade's second advance toward Jerusalem. However, the Third Crusade decided to not siege Jerusalem for the second time.
1:26:21: Battle of Jaffa between The Third Crusaders under Richard the Lionheart and Muslims under Saladin. A decisive victory for The Third Crusaders. The Battle of Jaffa was the last major battle of the Third Crusade.
1:30:10: Treaty of Jaffa in 1192 - 3 years of truce. Saladin retained control of Jerusalem, but Christians allowed to visit the holy city. Some Crusader forts allowed to continue to exist. This treaty ended the Third Crusade.
i'm so confused. the crusaders were so hard headed to conquer Jerusalem. they tore up peace treaty's and were always constantly motivated to conquer Jerusalem. why suddenly did they stop the conquest twice when they were so close and decided to a deal with saladin? seems very out of character for the crusaders. is it possible that most of the crusaders victory's were overdramatized and fabricated?

They had a lot of power struggles after the battle of jaffa not allowing them to put together as strong of a force to march toward jerusalem and they had a significant foothold at this point and prior to this crusade they were in danger of being wiped out completely, plus they would still maintain access to the city on unhostile terms@@muhammedyusuf9923

Their making total war troy even better, but i agree total war medieval better not fucking disappoint better be just like medieval 2 with super enhanced graphics, and dope optimization.
A talented team of modders has been working on Medieval 1212 Kingdoms for about half a decade, and just released its stable alpha to the public. They're doing a good job so far, but it has a ways to go. This is going to be the closest we get to Medieval 3, as CA no longer employs the competence necessary to recreate the immersive magic that Medieval 2 possesses.
Interesting thing to think about. While Richard, Baldwin and Salah ad-Din were duking it out for supremacy in the Holy Land. A little known warlord named Temujin far in the East was organizing a confederation of nomadic tribes. I don't really think he amounted to much besides raiding a few towns in Northern China but something neat nonetheless /s.

Damn, this was intense alongside very limited knowledge of the Third Crusade.
-The conflict flip-flopping between success for one side then the other.
-Frederick Barbarossa getting killed over a mere accident, & where his survival may have turned the tide of the Third Crusade.
-Richard being so close to his goal of conquering Jerusalem twice, only to get held up by logistics.
-Saladin having the potential to lay waste to the Crusading army at Acre but didn't.
-Saladin dying half a year after the Third Crusade ended, which may have been very advantageous for Richard.

@@ahzam2862 The Third Crusade ended in 1192. Richard died in 1199 (7 years after) from a crossbow wound in his shoulder which turned gangrenous - i.e. lack of bloodflow which turns skin black & dry (don't look it up). So not entirely from natural causes.
Saladin was a formidable though respected opponent to Richard. When Saladin died, his empire/realm was split amongst his competing sons. If Richard continued crusading up to this point, these divisions would be beneficial to him unless, due to change in historical events, post-Saladin divisions don't take place.
What would have restraint Richard was logistics - finances, army morale as well as troubling developments back in England & France.
...Though, in the event of the Third Crusaders conquering Jerusalem, whether they could have held onto is quite questionable. The division of the Muslim world was what allowed the First Crusaders to conquer the Antioch, Edessa & Jerusalem despite being poorly organised & equipped; but the Muslim world were able to recapture Jerusalem when they got their shit together.
@@laurenceellis6256 Most of your assessments are true, but much of Richards success was due to he was fresher to this arena and supported by many leaders of levant while Saladin was battle weary and had to face enemies at home and abroad. but the thing that made Saladin shinier than Richard is his strategic play. in contrast Richard have to be happy with his tactical victories.

@@alraziosmany I don't think that's fair to Richard. He wanted to control the coastal forts and cities, he wanted to cut Saladin off from Egypt. It was the religious zeal of the Crusaders that forced Richard to seek undesirable battle for Jerusalem. So many others would have been strung out, baited, and picked apart by the Muslim skirmish tactics, but Richard (and Barbarosa) kept their men mostly safe, and accomplished much. If Richard had his way, I think he would have let Saladin keep Jerusalem, and pressed on to the Nile Delta. The strength of the Crusader States always derived from their access to the sea, and the Latin West thereby. But in a two edged sword, its strength was also derived from religious fervor, which had to be taken into account, and was often at odds with good strategy and pragmatism.

If you look into the man, you realize it was completely in character. He arrived in the Crusader States in the first place because he had been exiled for murder after all. After his coup that saw him crowned as King of Jerusalem, betraying his oath to Saladin is rather minor and, to be honest, probably not unexpected on the part of Saladin (he did release him to stir up trouble in the Crusader camp after all).
In that time frame, it was quite common on both sides of the Crusader/Jihadi divide to not view oaths to the other as not being binding. The Koran allows deception when dealing with Infidels and Catholic clergy were quite willing to "absolve" their nobles of any vows sworn.

I think the best thing about these videos, is the way that you guys specifically point out where the opinions of historians differ or have changed over time with regards to the subjects you're discussing. People sometimes forget that the study of history is an ever-evolving endeavor, and at any time we can discover new evidence or documentation that completely changes our perspective on a person or event. This channel is fantastic for many reasons, but the fact that you guys specifically do this is I think my favorite thing.

I'm very impressed with the production quality of your videos. The script is informative, and well written, and the narrator has a great voice for this type of content. Everything is very clear, and understandable. You're diction is on point. The visuals are fantastic. The map sequences are extremely helpful for following the narrative, and really add to the whole experience. 10/10 would recommend. Unfortunately, I don't know many people that are as interested in history as I am, but I will certainly be talking about this to whomever may check it out.

If I may add :there was a Hungarian prince in Barbarossa's army. While in Hungary, Barbarossa personally asked the Hungarian Prince Géza, brother of King Béla III of Hungary, to join the Crusade

@@masterplokoon8803 Richard is not one who would honor such things...... He.... actually did fought battles.. actual battles with his father and king multiple times. Let alone a foreign ruler who "outranked" him.
So yeah as interesting as it might sound, they will actually fail. Logistics will also be a huge problem with the arrival of low supplied huge army of Barbarosa. Lack of supply and infighting of leaders always never yield good result.
@@Bazerald777 I am pretty sure Barbarossa's army would resuply once they reached the crusader states, there was also a crusader suply fleet. Barbarossa was the Emperor he outranked a king like Richard he was also pretty ironwilled. It would not be easy for Richard to mess with him or try to openly opose him. And with the extra numbers the crusader would be in a stronger position. It would certainly be interesting to see Richard, Barbarossa and Saladin interacting.

Besides that going on past crusades, something like a council would have made the decisions.
@@kles44 i am 7 months late but i i remember correctly many men saw the Holy Roman Emperor sa important since he was the one ordained by their God and heir to Rome, the Angevins would probably not change but the other crusaders would've stayed, the French for example continued fighting even without their king so an Imperator would've kept alot more of them, and if Barbarossa won a few more battles before reaching Acre or Tyre then who knows how many more would stay or come to the Crusade

@@wingedhussar4219 I'm reading one just called "Crusades", it has both Western views and the Muslim views described in it and it also goes over the effects the Crusades have over the modern world.

When I was thought about this Crusade at school it made it seem like it was a meh accomplishment for the knights. This documentary actually portrayed how high level the battles are for both the Lionheart and Saladin. One of the best rivalry in history.
Accomplishment? How did you comprehend accomplishment from that? The Crusaders again wasted human lives and destroyed land and people to come again and again and fail over and over and die in the sands.

I appreciate the hard work you put into your fantastic videos, mate! So informative & entertaining. I wish you told how Richard took back Jaffa in its entirety though. It's my favourite part of his whole campaign in the Holy Land, how he rushes onto the beach with sword in one hand & crossbow in the other, takes the city with a handful of men, then rides over to the Muslim army by himself to challenge them & none dare accept. Truly stunning courage.
Coming from muslim, i respect slahdin for his achievement he is a icon for muslim , also huge respect to baldwin even he was sick he was truly intelligent and fearless may Allah bless em i wish we end this beef between Muslims and Christians and realize that we have a lot of similarities, a slam elikom.

you do realize that half what he said in this video is not true and he only reads of the crusaders accounts and not the Muslim ones. small example the aka treaty he said salah adein tried to stall for time. how can he stall for time when Richard already entered aka and the garrison surrendered in return for their lives to be spared in july 11th and Richard murdered them in august when they should have left on july 11 but richard arrested them breaking his promise to spare them and that is the Muslim account of what happened so who makes sence

You do realize the crusade didn't succeed as much because the crusaders virtually had no supplies and had to attack along the coast? Saladin had loads of supply compared to them.

Not really. They just had a different style of fighting, Arab armies tended to favor mobile cavalry and light infantry, whereas the European armies favored shock cav and heavy infantry.
@@bearistotle2820 I get you but the Arabian archers had little to no utility in the battlefield because of the crusaders armor. The arrows bounce off. Although the Arabians had mobile cavalry and infantry the armor and equipments and crossbows were overwhelming if you watch other battles of the Arabs you’ll see that they were always bad at archery and susceptible to archers.
@@volt3631 the thing you fail to notice is that the main piece of gear or equipment for a European knight was his horse. Those light archers would kill hundreds of horses. Maybe not killing the knights but slowing them and adding fatigue
