  • Baldwin IV, Leper and crusader, was one of the outstanding commanders of his age, and during his life, posed a worthy challenge to the valorous Sultan Saladin. In this titanic struggle, Saladin had considerable advantage - he controlled the territory around Baldwin’s tiny kingdom, and he had far larger armies at his disposal. What’s more, the young King also suffered from a grave illness - leprosy. Despite his disease, and despite the fewness of his men, Baldwin the Leper rode at the head of his knights, sword in hand, battling Saladin’s legions on more than one occasion. Today, we’ll delve into the life, struggles, victories and defeats of this truly remarkable youth. This is Real Crusades History - the life of King Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem.

    “When I was sixteen I won a great victory. I felt in that moment that I should live to be one hundred, now I know I shall not see thirty. None of us know our end really, or what hand will guide us there. A King may move a man, a father may claim a son. That man can also move himself. And only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played, or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone. Even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.”

Baldwin was one of the more well-read kings at the time, was astute, kindhearted, and was well-liked as a child by all. He just had a natural charisma about him. The leprosy forced him to expedite his rule and forced him to look for successors, so he never really got a chance to truly live the life he should have. But being out on the battlefield with his men probably made him feel like his life was worth living.

      @@celuiquipeut6527 I didn't disagree or dispute that he wouldn't be the same man, simply that he would have been an even greater man without the illness given how much he was able to accomplish while sick. From a moral standpoint, I believe the illness made him stronger in his beliefs and faith because every day could have been his last, but had he not had the illness, I think he'd have been able to accomplish much more in his life and would have probably been able to rally even more Christians to rally to Jerusalem's aid had he been healthy. His illness unfortunately altered his trajectory in life and made some people look down him as an inferior man. It was God's will and no one can dispute that, but I think given his moral character, he still would have eventually ended up reaching the level of renown. He was just that good of a man.

      The craziest thing and what I don't think gets harped on enough was that the guy died at age 24. He was possibly one of the sole reasons the Kingdom of Jerusalem held together as long as it did, and most of that happened before he was an adult by our standards or barely into adulthood. It makes you wonder if he would've been an Alexander without the leprosy or if the leprosy put some kind of wisdom in him that normally comes with age.

    both baldwin and saladin were shrewd and capable leaders. dedicated to their creeds and the spirit of their laws. regardless of their temporal statuses.
    I also appreciate how you gave Guy some of the due that is warrented. There were definite things to criticize about him, but his campaign strategy wasnt one that was necessarily poor.

  • @morikusunoki4836
    @morikusunoki4836 Před rokem +110

    King Baldwin IV did not deserve to be called or to be remembered as the "Leper King", it's disrespectful. His capabilities and accomplishments as a king should not be overshadowed by this illness. He was a king, like the rest of the great kings who lived before, during, and after his time. People must focus on his achievements, strength and bravery as a knight of the cross instead of what killed him.
    King Baldwin IV must be remembered as the defender of his beloved Jerusalem, a king who loved his people, a king who did not assume to be above God. He did incredibly well for a very little amount of time, but he left a legacy in the history of mankind that'll last for a lifetime. Baldwin IV was the king of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

You could discuss how this was the very thing the crusades hoped to prevent, and the epic siege itself. Maybe discuss how it happened, why the western Christian nations didn't come to aid the city, the way the relationship deteriorated between the two churches and past strife (like the 4th crusade).
