Kreg 720Pro Is BAD! I Made It Better!

  • I got the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig 720Pro to review and compare to the Kreg K5. I've been using the Kreg K5 pocket-hole jig for almost four years now. I've drilled more pocket holes than I can count. I think if you're deciding between the Kreg 720Pro vs the K5, you should get the K5. The K5 is a much better made jig than the 720Pro. The Kreg 720Pro is poorly designed and feels cheap. These are my thoughts.

Matt, you missed one feature of the 720Pro. You can take it to the work. You can leave sheet goods for whatever on top of cookies (or other spacer) on your bench and work your way around the panel with the 720Pro. So no more needing to try and balance a 3/4" thick piece of plywood in the jig. I think that is why the 'Lego-like' attachment of the wings. Easly removed so the jig can work horizontally on the bench.
      .
      Keep up the great work!!!

If you don't read manuals. You ARE NOT always reviewing the entire product. I am shocked by the number of reviews that say, "I don't know what this is for..." or they set up products incorrectly and base reviews thereon. Those aren't "reviews." Those are uninformed opinions. Maybe that's why you aren't sponsored. That is my uninformed opinion.

I am basing a project I am currently doing on the pocket hole. I had picked it up couple years ago and it’s been moving from one tool box to another. Then I started watching 731 and started thinking why not instead of why. Haven’t got up to using it yet but I think it’s going to give me versatility. And I needed something to try to get me back on the horse after some injuries and other issues the doctors diagnosed while treating the injuries. We live and learn. That’s what keeps us coming back.

The reason the wing compartments are attached as they are is that they are intended for removal! If you remove them, flip the main unit for use with a piece of plywood, you can them set the front of plywood on the wings to support it. By locking them down you've eliminated this feature unless you want to undo the screws each time you get to pout pocket holes into the edge of plywood (or any other stock).

When my wife and I moved into our house, my parents bought us a couple power tools as house-warming gifts. They're very carpentry oriented and I've been watching them do stuff kinda like this almost all my life while I live with them, but was minimally involved. It didn't interest me at the time. Anyway, I didn't notice until last weekend that they had bought for us one of the small pocket hole jigs that needs one of the separate clamps. It was just sitting there still in the wrapper! There was even a box of extra Kreg screws with the different thread sizes and lengths! It's like they knew what they were buying us! XD First this I did with it? Used it to make some chevrons.
Thanks for the extra encouragement in the videos. I haven't had the drive to get out and try my hand at woodworking. I ended up building a shutter for my kid's bedroom window last weekend as well and it fits pretty well minus how the hinge is mounted on the house. Regardless, sometimes, I just need to be reminded that it honestly doesn't matter if other people like what I make or do. Each time I do anything with wood or my saws, I'm a little better at it and that's really what matters! Thanks!!!!!

I bought the 720 pro about 6 months ago and the first time I used it was outside for some fence repairs. It was the first pocket hole jig I ever owned and it was awkward to use. I decided then that I will mount it on a board and did just like you did, but made the two side pieces about 4 inches out and it works well now. I simply clamp the board on my workbench and I am satisfied with how it works (so far).

Great review! I agree with you on the cheaper feel and the "less than positive" feel on the clamping handle. The main thing I don't like is that you can't remove the drill guide and use it as a portable pocket hole jig. I feel that the K5 is a more solid and versatile system. Think I'll stick with my K5. Great review! I thought I'd found everything I didn't like about the 720, but just about lost it when you found out the dust collection got in the way of the storage lid. As for mounting it, Kreg actually made the 720 jig so you can slide it off of those "Lego" pieces and leave the storage wings mounted to the board. I agree though, I would have liked a way to permanently fasten all of it down too.

Kreg needs to give you a holler so you can really make them a real pro version.
If they used a harder plastic all the way around, maybe a $5 or $6 difference in their costs- but would have been so much better.
Based on what you've shown, I think a pro version should have more aluminum, or denser plastic, metal hinge points, and/or the inside of the plastic cases molded to anticipate someone putting screws into a mounting board...

It seems that they put a lot of time and energy making this tool versatile. I will admit, it can be pretty handy using the tool in more directions rather than just there vertical position. On the flip-side, it seems to have fallen short on the proper tolerances when it came to production. As you said, it's the nature of plastic. It will be even better if you ditch the wings all together and build wooden support wings, in my opinion. Solid review

I completely agree with the comments you made about it being "professional". Im assuming they made several versions as they came up with the final design and the fact that they still released this is embarrassing. Why not make an offset hose adapter or possibly make it 45 back out of the way of the storage boxes??? When you put the hose adapter on and it hit the lid it was an instant face palm along with the Homer Simpson "DOH".

Armour jig is great for the price. You'd have to go much higher for a better system IMO.
Like the Castle Hole Cutter system starts at $400 with their portable table top 110 model and then goes much higher for their bigger machines but they're made for commercial production and produces cleaner and stronger pockets at a more usable 6 degree angle vs the standard pocket hole guide jigs that are at 15 degrees... You'd especially, notice the difference when driving the screws in as you can basically just hold the pieces with your hand to keep alignment vs locking it down with clamps with your standard pocket holes, and the shallower angle also means it can work with thinner materials and there's a bit less to worry about with screw length.

Your board mount could have been cut so the back edge lined up with the back of the jig. This would allow the jig to be used in the 'flipped' orientation for sheet goods. I don't know how it would be flipped with the storage wings vertical. Maybe fine since you have screwed them down.

    • @gomrko
      @gomrko Před 2 lety +1

I was thinking the same thing. Flush mount it to the back of the board and you can use it in both orientations. Maybe alter the width of the board so it is flush mounted to the front too, to use the clamp both ways. I like that the K7 folds up but if it is going to be flimsy, nevermind..mount it to a board.
I have the K5, mounted on a board. I think I prefer the K5 especially because I can use it with the HD accessory head and HD screws for quick strong 2x4 construction. The K5 works well except for the storage box latches, i added Velcro after everything fell out the second time.

So hopefully the newly created 720 Pro accessories will be a better investment going forward for me. As for mounting to a board, I think I'll mount mine flush with the back of the board, that way I can still lie it on it's back when adding pocket holes to longer pieces of wood.

I like being able to lay it on its back and use it. I would trim the back edge of your board to keep that option. But all pocket hole jigs need to be mounted. I've had my K4 on a board for 10+ years. Also curious about longevity but I had similar doubts about the K4 and it's still going strong. So, maybe it's just change that we don't like.

I've never used my K5 in another position. The K4 and K5 were much better made. The 720 won't last. The materials are just cheaper.

I noticed that with it mounted to the board, the slots for clamping it to your workbench are now useless without removing from the board. Maybe mount it to the board so it's flush, and then notch the board for the lay-down position. Excellent idea otherwise!

I just did my first pocket hole project, & used the Kreg 720 Pro. I don't know any different (until this video), so it did just fine. I did find that when unclamping, you couldn't just release it. You have to pull the handle up that last little bit for it to release. Again, I don't know any different, so it's all good. If I need to start using the wings for support, I'll likely mount it to a board as well. Thanx, Matt!

I build cabinets for a living and have used the old kreg pocket hole jig similar to the k5 but older and I still have it after 16 years of use I have finally looked to upgrade.
I pocket hole and biscuit front frames to my cabinet boxes I also use the kreg jig to connect front frames together with added domino biscuits not that you need them but it does help eliminate movement.
Just wondering what one to get now, what pocket jig do you recommend ?

Matt, I actually laughed out loud when you tried to open the storage compartment and the lid hit the dust collection port. Hilarious! I doubt I'll ever get a jig like that. I just have their most basic model, a tiny little deal that has to be clamped to the workpiece, and only has one hole for the bit. I don't do a ton with pocket holes (so far), so I haven't yet needed anything fancier.

Just picked up the basic 720, I’ll make the wings myself with a T-track for the stop and Mount to a board. The unit is made in China, says so right over the barcode on the outer box. This is likely why it has a more sleek look over the older models, because the tooling for the more complicated injection moulding is much cheaper in China, as is the assembly of a more complex auto-adjusting tool. I wouldn’t say it’s construction is “cheap” but it is a lot of plastic. It’s not “pro”, but the auto adjust feature saves a ton of time and I’m happy with the purchase as a pro.

Hi. What Kreg Jig product would you suggest I buy for my project? I will be 45 mitering all of my new 1x5 window and door trim. I want to pre fab all of them using pocket jig screws and glue. The only videos I have seen doing 45's is with people standing the piece of wood upright at an angle and clamping the 45 end down flat on the miter. That's not going to be easy to do with a 7 foot piece of trim. Do you know if you can do it on the flat using the 320? I would love to get your recommendation on the best way to go about doing this. Thanks and great review.

You actually pushed me over the edge on purchasing a Kreg K5. I'm glad I did because if I had waited, I would have assumed that the "latest greatest" would have been the "latest greatest." There's a chance that I would have blindly purchased the 720Pro. After watching this video, it looks like Kreg, who I greatly respect, dropped the ball on this one. I'm sure that there's a logical reason why Kreg sacrificed their wonderful image with this tool, but That isn't acceptable. I'm proud of my K5 and expect it to give me many years of accurate pocket holes.

Great video! I live in the UK and the 4 x 2's over here are actually 3¾ x 1¾ and unfortunately I didn't do enough research so I can't use the Kreg 720Pro for my 4 x 2's. My only option as far as I know is the Kreg HD jig. Can you think of anyway I can get around this without investing in another jig? Cheers!

As a K5 user who uses the HD jig quite a bit (Deck and post stuff) can you change out the internals to use the HD bit and screws? What about the insert and bits for the plugs? I like to use plugs of different material and colors to contrast the wood or grain, so I make my own plugs (Plus I have no woodworking store near me)

Great review as always. I bought this a couple of weeks ago and just like you, was not impressed with how cheap it felt. Definitely NOT professional grade. I used it a few times to build a storage cart for my wood and it worked okay. I'm going to try and look for a K5 or that Massca one you reviewed.
On another note, Kreg customer service is outstanding. I called to return this one and they said no problem, we'll credit your account and we don't want you to ship it back so can you donate it to a Habitat for Humanity near you or some organization like that? There's a HforH within 15 minutes of me so that's what I'll do.

I totally agree with your assessment of the 720 Pro. The idea is good, but poorly implemented. I like the K4 the best with the K5 second. I don't like the clamp on the K5 as well. They took away some of the flexibility with the 720 such as being able to pull the drill guide out of the unit and use it separately. I think I have most of the models up to these two new ones which I will not be buying. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

I have both. The dust fixtures on the K5 is garbage. On both, I replaced the boxes as spacers with solid wood wings. That works way better. Tools and bits and screws get stored in dedicated tool boxed. They are cheap. One set in each shop. (2200 miles apart) I prefer the auto depth and the dust collection features of the pro, the ability to use smaller diameter screws of the K5. Great show, thank you.
