Dell XPS 15 9550 9560 2.5" SATA SSD Upgrade

  • In this video I'll walk you through the process of installing a 2.5" SATA SSD in the Dell XPS15 9550 laptop. The same procedure should be applicable for the 9560 model and possibly others too. However, the installation of SATA SSDs is only possible in specific models that have the 56Wh battery - make sure you have the right model before you go ahead and order your SSD and related cable kit.
    In order to be able to install the SSD you'll need a SATA connector cable that needs to be clicked in place on a dedicated connector on the motherboard. The cable-kit I've bought can be ordered by following the link below .. you don't need to buy from the same seller, but make sure you buy the right cable :) Delivery time in my case was 3 weeks (free shipping).
    Link to order the cable kit: www.aliexpress.com/item/MAD-D...
    EDIT AUG 2022: The link above does not work anymore. Here is another link that should work: www.amazon.com/wangpeng-Preci...

    Great video, I have been planning on upgrading my NVMe drive/chip/card [whatever you wish to call it ;-)], next week, and so I went and watched your video [amongst a few others], and then went and cracked open my rig to find that I already have the 56W battery AND the drive caddy in my rig, so I only needed to order the rubber bumpers and SATA adapter cable! I had already ordered a replacement NVMe drive to replace the old one, so I'll still go ahead with that and then use a spare 250GB as a "D "drive as well. Thank you again!!

If you do, press the power button down for more than 4 seconds and the laptop should do a restart. During the restart go into BIOS and see if the new SSD is recognized - see if its listed on the drive section. Save your new BIOS configuration and restart the laptop - I hope your SSD is compatible. I also assume you mounted the SSD connector firmly and properly to the motherboard using the correct adapter?

  • @aBunnyThatWillChewOnYourCables

    I can't really see it in your video, but did your HDD cable bend?
    I've got a 7590 model of this laptop and when I put the HDD cable in it was sort of too long and it bent a little... I bought a cable for the 9570 as I read on other forums that it's compatible. It's just that I'm worried that cause it's bent, overtime it might break..

    • @nicolaetuns
      @nicolaetuns  Před 4 lety +2

      In my case the cable is only bending a little. However, once you got it working I do not think it will break later on - the temperature is not that high so the cable will no extend due to heat. If your HDD is secured in place nothing will pull on that cable - i would not worry about it.

    • @nicolaetuns
      @nicolaetuns  Před 3 lety

      Caspian, there are no dumb questions! If you use an SSD or a classic HDD is all the same as long as the drive you use has a SATA interface.
