  • I use the Dell XPS 15 9570 for editing 4K video, but 6 months after launch it's due an upgrade. I'm adding 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD & a new Wi-Fi chip - but will it make a big difference?

Hi Chaps! Thanks for all your comments - Quick update:
    1) If you're doing this upgrade, you could go for the newer Intel 9260 Wi-Fi card (faster, BT 5.), I already had a 8265 laying around so I wanted to keep costs down (and still improve my Wi-fi reliability)
    2) Some of you are saying I re-connected the black/white antenna wires incorrectly on the Wi-Fi chip, in fact the Killer card required them to be the opposite way around compared to the Intel. Which is why I reconnected them in a different way.
    3) Be very, VERY careful with the two phillips-head screws under the flap. They are extremely soft and easy to thread.
    4) You can unplug the battery before doing upgrades if you need to, better to be safe than sorry, but it's not absolutely necessary.
    5) Here's a link for the wallpaper: imgur.com/gallery/Ytp5l
Hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers :)

It's a small detail but it's really cool that you showed the ENTIRE process, including after installing the new SSD. Most youtube videos don't show that part. I haven't used Windows in a while, and reinstalling Windows 7 on my old Alienware desktop was NOT that easy after I replaced the mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" old school SSD. It's nice to see that if I actually opt for a new windows laptop for my daughter or something (since most schools use windows), it will be easy to upgrade the machine. TU for the helpful video.

I just want to say how happy it makes me to see a CZcamsr who does 4K video editing who isn't using a Mac. It's not that I don't have an issue with Macs - but the sheer unity of video edit types who simply assume "Video editing? You need a Mac!' is so frustrating. Nice to see someone doing the same thing with a Windows 10 system.

      @nadtz Před 5 lety +5

I cant imagine how many laptops I've tinkered inside of, once the trend towards internal batteries became a thing I stopped caring about unplugging them and I (nor anyone I work with) has ever had a safety issue. Ok I'm being a little glib there but honestly if you are just swapping cards and you fry something something else is wrong with the system as that should not happen. Some laptops let you access memory/ssd without even opening the laptop in which case you would have to take the whole thing apart to do what you are talking about to perform what would otherwise be a 3 minute upgrade.

    • @prringa6099
      @prringa6099 Před 5 lety +1

Tip for those looking to install a traditional SSD into their laptops (possible for m.2 nvme SSD as well, but potentially more finicky) connect your SSD up to your desktop PC (If you have one) and use macrium reflect to copy the contents of your desktops storage onto the new drive, then install the drivers for your laptop into your new SSD and delete anything not needed on it. Then install into laptop with a ready to go SSD, with the same setup as your desktop PC !

1)after installing an ssd plugin a usb drive with windows on it, and then open up the boot menu and select your usb boot device and then select the drive you want to install it on after that the screen will turn black, thats when you need to unplug the usb, then the windows install is really easy.
2)You can use a program like Macrium Reflect or Samsung's other option to clone the drive, you will need your old drive and a new drive as well .......you can look it up on CZcams.
      hope it helped

Yet in your tutorial notes you have kept white to white and black to black. I really don't want to make a mistake here and connect things the wrong way so any guidance on this would be appreciated. As a student I am forever grateful that I was working in Curry's when the 9560 went on clearance to make way for the 9570, managed to snag it for about £600

Hi Tech Chap. I recently bought this laptop and did the upgrades as you suggested. Loving it to the core. But I can’t get over the fact that the display is over saturated despite changing the Dell Color App settings to sRGB. I just transferred a png made from PS to my iPhone. The image pops out color on Dell display whereas looks equally dull on iPhone display. Any workaround?

Great video. I'm don't know much about computers but do you have to reinstall all the programs you had before? Does the windows iso image also saves all the programs you had before? Thanks for clarifying

Hi Tom! your videos are super cool, keep it coming.
Can the removed ssd be used as an external drive with some sort of adapter? I searched in amazon, i am not able to find a PCIe based adapter, only SATA is available.

Interested in your thoughts. I’m thinking of buying the XPS 15 with 8GB ram and 256GB SSD...however I’d like to upgrade to the 16GB version of the ram and 500 GB SSD that you have in this video. Will come in $50 under the current retail version of Dells 16/500 model. Would you recommend going this route?

Great video! Thanks! Is this possible with the XPS 9575 model? I had bought it with a regular SSD but not sure if it's compatible with NVMe standard - is there any difference in the way it connects? Like you, at the time of buying, couldn't afford to max spec it out but now think about upgrading a few things (storage and maybe wiFi - what's the problem with the wifi card that it ships with? Bad range?)
I know the RAM is soldered on and not upgradeable. Are there any other upgradeability options for the XPS 9575 2-in-1?
Also do you have any recommendations for usb type c hub? The market seems flooded with a ton of variants from unknown/known manufactures. Looking for versatile option (like a 10 or 8 in 1 that gives all possible needs in one package that doesn't overheat/ stable for long usage if needed
Thanks in advance if you see this!

the interiour of the XPS looks so much like my MBP 15inch 2012! just now I need to upgrade and unfortunately it won't a mac again, won't pay 450€ for 1TB SSD. that's simply madness.

Brilliant video and nicely explained. I have dell XPS 15 9550 which I think is dell 2015 model. 16 GB RAM with 512 GB SSD. I wonder if I can expand the ram to 32 and SSD to 1 TB like you did? Thanks.

Cheers Tom. I'm buying the same spec in a few weeks with the 4K screen from John Lewis. Not bad for £1800. The links are really useful.

Does the new WiFi card make that big of a difference compared to the stock one? In terms of speed and range?

Love your videos. You explaine very technica stuff for the lay person like me! I have the same computer and was wondering whether you are encountering heat issues. Even when it is "sleeping" it is hot to the touch. Once I wake it up the fan kicks in ad it cools down. I am worried that the laptop will over heat when not in use.

Thanks for sharing the tips for upgrading the laptop! Actually I upgrade the SSD, RAM and Wifi by myself since I bought it after two days LOL
I am using Intel Wireless AC-9260 and it works like a charm, and the Samsung 970 PRO SSD is working fast as good as the wifi :)

I upgraded my WiFi card to the Intel AC-9260 .. the same day that I received my laptop! 😁 I haven't upgraded my SSD because I've never had a laptop with SSD and is see an improvement in performance from HDD anyway 😉 I might upgrade once I start getting into video editing properly!

Its quite cool to know that its that easy to upgrade a dell xps, eveyrhting is accessible, tought u'd have more difficulty getting access to those components..

With any upgrade like this, once you take the back off, take a photo, for 2 reasons, if you make an error you can see how the connections were when you took the back off.
Second reason take a photo after you have finished the upgrade and rename the photo file something like "Dell XPS 9570 upgrade" so you can search and find it again then a year or 2 later you can see what upgrades you did or didn't do as sometimes you may forget what you did.

Do you notice the speed increase of the SSD in booting windows or using the laptop besides file transfers?

  • @Michael-Alexander-1982

I bought the XPS15 (9560) based on your recommendation way back when. The battery has given out (not swelling like many have previously reported). Any suggestion on a suitable battery replacement for the original GPM03?
