- A guide to upgrading the Dell XPS 13 9360 laptop SSD, and replacing the Dell PW23Y battery.
This is a relatively simple process requiring just a small Torx T5 and 2mm Philips head screwdriver and a plastic pry tool.

Today, using this video on another computer as a guide, I managed to replace my laptop battery with you guiding my hand along the way.
I used to use my wife’s business tech, but as his home business grew, so did his prices, so he fell out of my price range; hence, I thought it might be time to try a simple repair on my own.
Because your video was clear, slow and concise as to the procedure, the operation on my laptop was a total success. Moreover, as this was my first time breaking into any computer, it was extremely helpful that you called out the precise tool and head size used for each screw and maneuver.
I had to write to you to thank you for your thoughtful, accurate and self help video on how to replace the battery on my specific laptop.
Fred
😊
Thank you. Super video. Particularly reassured by the "this can be tricky" regarding removing the cover. Having not done this before I wouldn't have expected it to be quite so cumbersome, without your guidance. Thanks
Glad it helped!
The one part I needed to see had his hands in the way - unplugging the battery cable.
Place a finger nail either side of the connector and gently pull it out.
Fingernail or plastic tool to slide each side out evenly
@@BrueComputing I tried this but it doesn’t seem to work. Feels really sturdy and locked in place
@@lucasvissenberg6511 on mine (xps 13 9360) I had to lift a little plastic cover off the connector and pull it towards the battery, it then slid off. On mine, it cannot be pulled off upwards
I had this problem too but upon careful inspection I found that the plug is inserted into a ‘sturdy’ shell. Like a cassette. I slide out the plug back towards me and the problem was solved.
Thank you so much for this. I couldn't have changed my failing battery without this very helpful guide.
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much for this extremely helpful vid. Today I managed to change the battery on my XPS 13 by following your step-by-step video. To pry open the outer shell after removing all the screws, since I don’t have the instrument that you used, I improvised a bit, and ran it under like your instruction. It popped out one by one exactly like in this vid. My laptop came to life with a new battery now. You’re a life saver!
Glad it helped, and thank you!
@@BrueComputing could you kindly recommend UK battery suppliers please for the XPS, there so much online with varing reviews so dont know who to trust. I have a xps 13 9360. Thanks
Que era lo que te pasaba?a mi me dijeron que por estática no cargaba,la desenchufe ahora me queda el power encendido y no carga ni puedo encenderlo ,puede ser que te pasara eso ?antes de cambiarla ?un saludo
@@TheDjmaldomaybe the polarity of the battery was wrongly connected? Or maybe there is debris that doesn’t allow direct contact? It’s better to get help from a qualified technician..
Excellent well paced and informative. video. My XPS 13 battery dies very suddenly on battery power at around 90 minutes, even though its often showing about 50% battery life left just before it goes into limp mode and dies. I'm assuming that the battery could do with replacing as when I first got it it was comfortably doing 2 to 3 hours. I'm using it for sports photography outdoors.
Thank you! Video was excellent and saved me a ton of money replacing the battery myself. Only video around, I found, that showed this process for the XPS 13 9360.
Thank you. Just did the battery part now. Immediately noticed that the trackpad is working much better (clicks and movement both). Unrelated to the battery per se, but maybe there was dust in there, and blowing it out helped.
You can sometimes find that a dying battery has bulged up slightly and is putting pressure on the back of the touchpad.
Awesome video thanks, after buying a Torx T5 allen key the rest went smoothly. Brilliantly explained
Glad it helped!
Los de la bateria tambien son T5 ?
I don't usually comment, but this guide was really helpful! It was a peace of cake! Even managed to clean the fans. Thanks!
I’ve just used this video to replace the battery. It was very helpful. Thanks for uploading!
Glad it helped!
Hello, do you know what the full charge capacity of the battery is and how long the replacement battery charge is. Thank you
Thanks for this. Guided me through the battery replacement for my XPS 13.
Glad it helped.
This is a very nice vid on how to replace the battery. The only thing that holds me back from doing it - apart from the fact that I haven't got a replacement laptop - is that the crucial part : disconnecting the battery is not really shown, although this is quite important. Reading the other comments, I learn that this is not so easy. It would be nice to elaborate a bit more on that part. For the rest, nice vid !
It's shown at 3:29 mark: czcams.com/video/VLBx2djlxrA/video.html
@@ienupar2003 Yeah but his hand is blocking it. I just attempted to follow it and literal sparks flew so he for sure should have shown this better because now I'm very scared to try to disconnect it.
Kinda late but don’t pull up the pins slide into the connection so you are supposed to pull or use the plastic to push it out by sliding it out downwards
Great video, especially the tips on opening the back using a sliding motion with your pry tools. I found that when I started at the top right side, once that corner popped open, I wedged a pry tool in to keep it open, then I used a second pry tool to slide down the side. You do need a good bit of force as the clips hold way tight. It will make pops like things are breaking, but its the clips disengaging. As for the battery plug, look at your replacement battery's plug - it has two "ears" at the end where the wires insert into the plug. Gently using a pry tool on the old battery plug, push back towards the battery at each of these ears, alternating side to side, and the plug should slide out of the housing towards the battery. There is a small tab on the top side of the plug, which must engage when the plug is seated in the plug slot. You must overcome the friction this tab creates when pushing the ears to remove the plug. Replacement went smoothly thanks to your video. I hoist a pint of Best in your honor!
Cheers!
I just watched this video and then went ahead and replaced the battery in my laptop. So long as you have the replacement battery and the tools it was pretty straightforward. I'm 68 and female lol
Thanks for the video! Is awesome and it seems extremely easy to do! Since you mention at the very end, may I ask you some suggestions where to buy:
- the battery (I checked on Dell website, and it seems that provide just the one with 56W rather than 60 W)
- the type of screwdriver needed
Thanks again!
Good instructional video. Thanks. No problem following. Question. I the UK is there any recycling for these batteries?
You're a savior. Thank you for this
Glad it helped!
Easy to follow. Had no problems. Thanks
Glad it helped!
This video really helped me with my Dell XPS, thank you
Glad it helped!
Very helpful and easy to follow. Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video, I'm going to give it a try. Can you do more videos on the xps 13 9360?
Extremely helpful thanks for the assistance worked like a charm !
Glad it helped.
The video was really helpful. I need to note that my new battery was not recognized properly and the system light was blinking 2 amber then 1 white. Further research on Dell stated that you needed to disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 or more seconds. I then reconnected the battery and it worked fine. Also, the battery was only $40 on Amazon!
Hello, do you know what the full charge capacity of the battery is and how long the replacement battery charge is. Thank you
Thanks very much! My old battery was so bad that if I disconnected the power for a couple of seconds the machine would shutdown. After installing the new one it says 61% remaining, 3:35. Dell Power Manager now says "Health Excellent". I'll cycle it a few times but it looks great so far.
After a month of a lot of use, still working great, many hours of life.
Would you be able to provide us with a link to where you purchased it?
Hello, do you know what the full charge capacity of the battery is and how long the replacement battery charge is. Thank you
Thanks so much for this video. Can I ask what type of screw-drivers you used to unscrew the entire case and battery. That info would very helpful as I'm thinking of purchasing the screw drivers to replace my Dell battery. (Based in Australia)
I was able to use this guide to replace the battery just fine. Except at the end, when putting the case back on, i was unable to get the Phillips screw (under the XPS/Dell logo in the center) to go all the way in. It would just stop at a certain point and not go further. It doesnt seem crucial to holding the case on securely, so i tossed it, no issues. All is working well.
I think your supposed to screw all the outer screws to almost fully screwed in then the middle one screw down first as it’s in the centre , all the other screws should go in fine 😊
Legend mate! Great vid... and you're right.. first time taking the panel off was a pain in the A! haha
Was able to replace the battery - she's running like a dream. Thanks for your vid!
Glad it helped!
Very helpful, many thanks!
Such a great video. thank you. Is there another place I can get the battery for the XPS 13 9360? the like posted said it is unavailable :(
Love how to the point and well-explained this video was.
Thanks so much... housewife with my 14year old teenager daughter just got battery replaced with help of your video😊
Glad it helped
Very helpful, the change was easy. Thanks!
Hello, do you know what the full charge capacity of the battery is and how long the replacement battery charge is. Thank you
Thanks. Had an issue where the laptop just stopped turning on and charging even when plugged in. Reseat the connector and boom. Will likely have to get a replacement battery though.
Overall very helpful but the battery cable is very difficult to unplug and we can't see his technique to remove it so quickly. Unplugging the battery is the worst part, I thought I was home free after I was able to lift off the bottom cover...but nope. I had the won't boot issue these notebooks seem to have and the "easy" way didn't work so had to open and re-seat the batteries.
Worked like a charm except for having to spend an hour trying to wriggle out the battery plug because I didn't want to push down too hard or pull too hard and didn't want to pull on cables (never a good idea) but found another guy who had a close up of that, and I could tell at that point that either yours would be easy, or you'd need a lot of patience and just not get frustrated. If you bear with it, eventually you'll get it, so take a break come back, stay calm. The rest is a breeze.
Putting notebook back together took 5 minutes or less and computer is just fine now - but I'll say be very patient when you reboot. It'll go through a series of reboots and finally will flass 3 orange lights and 1 clear (slightly blue) light and then you'll reset your BIOS clock. I took a run through all my settings and they looked good. Then it booted up.
I restarted just to see, no problems and then I shut it down and restarted. All good. Before this happened, battery fully charged, after the fix, I was still at 97%, battery is in excellent health, so last thing I'll do is plug it in and restart. So it was a series of simple procedures, but some could be long and painstaking. Overall, a very successful surgery!
I picked this video because he was very detailed in showing how to remove the cover after you take the screws out - that was nerve racking as well since you don't want to hurt anything inside. His tip for doing the back first is what worked for me as well, thanks!
Do you have the video with the close up of disconnecting the battery? Have been stuck for hours on that
Thank you for the video but how can we replace the Ram?
I found it easier to unscrew and move the battery out of the way, doing this made access to the battery connector easier which just pulls out towards the battery with no ‘lugs’ holding the connector in place it just slides out.
Thank you. This was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much, and although the crucial part of not being able to see the actual disengaging of the actual plug itself because your hand is in the way, I was able to work out how to do it. Cheers.
How?
Thanks a lot .
Your video was a great help for me. 👍🤓
Glad it helped
Nicely explained, thanks
Super helpful. Thank you!

Any recommendations for unscrewing a stripped flat black screw (the ones that holds down the battery)?

Do need get registered new fitted battery? On bios or etc?
Hello ! I saw that there are some retailers selling the replacement battery for the XPS 9360 but it is a 46Wh battery. Would it be fine ? I can see the the original one is rated 60Wh
If it is a compatible battery it should work, but would give shorter battery life.
I have the same laptop and looking for a replacement battery. Would you be able to recommend alternative suppliers to dell. Thanks
I keep hearing that wires for the speakers are taped to the battery. You didn't show that? Or is that not the case for the 9360?
Any further advice for removing the clips at the back of the laptop? They seem stuck in pretty well.
I’m having the same problem. Two of them are unmovable.
I have the dell XPS 9305 and the battery is so horrible it is unusable for a student who travels a lot. Can you recommend replacing any batteries for me that have extended hours of battery life?
Hi bro thanks for the video but can I do 4k single layer or HD multi layer videos during on this laptop
What do you mean?
I tried using the SSD recommended in the Amazon Associate Links, however the Dell Support Assist App on my machine could find no bootable devices! Why didn't you install one in your video?
Sorry, do you have an updated link for the pry tools, I have a 2019 XPS 13 that I want to replace the battery on too. Also clean out any dust etc.

I have a problem with battery in dell xps 13 9343. I replaced the battery 3 times and it's the same problem every time. Battery is not charging, the white LED and the yellow LED are flashing, in BIOS under battery icon shows messaage: not dell battery. I used not orignal battery, orginal Dell is not possible to buy. Please help.
Good vid, would be even better if the key movements were caught by the camera or the camera had a better angle.
Where can I purchase the tool to remove the back cover of the laptop?
Have you ever experienced that the track pad stops working? I have 9360 and it's not working for me anymore, I haven't found any solution for it.
What do I do if my screws are not coming off 😰
Hi, with this model there is only a single fan in it correct? The processor fan? I just got a warning that it is failing. I opened up the system and cleared out very little dust, nearly nothing. And did notice the fan was spinning. Regardless have you replaced a fan on this system?
Does the fan run smoothly or constantly rev up/down? A customer had one a while ago which constantly span up and down and gave a fan failure warning - I replaced the fan which was a fairly simple process, but issue persisted and tracked it to a mainboard issue.
Fortunately it had entries in the BIOS error logs dating back a number of months, having started inside the warranty period, so managed to get Dell to replace it free of charge.
@@BrueComputing it runs smooth but on boot up it keeps going into a hardware scan and comes back with that error. Once I boot past that it runs fine. I also blew out the area around it.
Useful overall but i wish you had been more specific about how to actually unplug the battery (immediately after lifting the plate)
Thanks, will bare that in mind for future videos.
How did you do it I’m not able to
I used tweezers to apply pressure to both sides of the plug, slowly dislodging it. Be careful to not apply too much pressure - if your hand slips, you could damage another part of the computer. I think some of the plugs are just more difficult than others (the one in the video came out more smoothly than mine).
Is that SSD he one windows is installed on? Or is is there a boot drive hidden somewhere? I'd like to upgrade for more space but would it be possible without having to reinstall the OS?
Yes it is. You can clean install, or clone the OS across to the new drive.
@@BrueComputing Thank you for the reply
What's the abbreviation for a "2mm Philips head skrewdriver"? Am I correct going with PH00 (+2.0)? Too much for me aaah please help! Thanks :P
Dell now provide replacement batteries for a flat fee of about £38 including ups delivery and pick up a few days later of the old battery to recycle it properly. Really good circular economy service (finally!)
Interesting, got a link to that?
In the video you mentioned the battery cost £75, but the link in the description of this video leads to battery costing almost £150. What should be the correct price? I can not even find this battery on Dell website.
When I bought it, it was £75 on Amazon, but prices fluctuate a bit and I only recommend the genuine ones.
I bought mine through my EetGroup trade account, currently £54 ex. VAT on there.
What did you mean the wifi card is a killer? Should we upgrade? What would be a recommended upgrade to take advantage of Wifi 6? Thank you!
Killer is a brand of network cards: www.killernetworking.com/
Now owned by Intel.
If you wanted to get WiFi 6 support then I'd install an Intel AX210 card: amzn.to/3tdfh1W
@@BrueComputing thank you!
That one doesn't seem to be available. How does this one look:
WiFi 6 AX200 WiFi Adapter for Windows 10 64bit Chrome OS and Linux Laptop or Desktop PCs-802.11AX 2.4GHz 574Mbps or 5GHz 2.4Gbps(160MHz) with Bluetooth 5.1-Intel WiFi 6 AX200 NGW www.amazon.com/dp/B07TLBNSZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_glt_fabc_8HXG5QDGWKDY5ZRVYRD1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
AX200 is also WiFi 6, the AX210 is its replacement so if you can find one I'd put that in.
Thank you I am going to purchase the same battery it's not cheap but I guess it will do the work.I Will also buy that screw driver.
No problem. Hope it goes ok.
life saver thank you!!!!!
Glad it helped!
Thanks Brue!
No worries!
As others have said, excellent as it just gets to the point, explains 'details' like getting the back off (especially first time around) can be tricky (it is!). The only tip I learnt was there are two 'suitable' screw holes for the little Philips battery retaining screw. The one in the centre is for the screw in the middle of the back (under the XPS flap) ... you need the one on the right (where it came from!) ... don't confuse them! And I went for a Duracell battery. 'Only' about £80 instead of £125 for the Dell-badged battery, but (I hope) a reputable brand as opposed to a cheap Chinese battery that might do nasty things! I hope that logic proves to be correct 😬
Can you replace XPS 13 9360's RAM?
Extremely useful video. I was all worried about the cover but it popped right off. The biggest trick was the battery connection where I was afraid I’d do some damage, so the additional comments regarding that were most helpful. In the absence of this tutorial I’m certain I’d have taken it to the shop which, in retrospect, would have been embarrassing. So thanks for the video in addition to the boost of my confidence.
One of the screws wont come out and now i have hurt the thread a bit. what can i do?
Same! Any chance you figured out how to take out the screw?
What is the best memory card?
can you do another video with probably a higher angle?
No, sorry. It was recorded whilst working on a customer system.
One of the flat screws to hold the battery in place has been stripped. I ve tried some of the recommended methods available, nothing seems to work now. Should I get WD40 and the extractor drill bits as last resort? Any other easier way?
I'm also facing this issue - were you able to resolve it?
@@georgie179 yep had to find my own way around it! The old battery was to be disposed of anyway. Cut through the plastic bit around the screw and then used a small plier. 😐
Same issue! Any solutions?

Is replacing the Sim card mandatory before replacing battery?
the sim card
Laptop I worked on didn't have a SIM card. Not sure why you'd need to replace it on models with WWAN though?
how do u unplug the battery please it's been 30 minutes of struggle T--T
The back panel is practically impossible to separate from the unit
Im struggling to unplug the battery Someone please help
A. Prying from the front is easier. B - when detaching the battery your hand hides the stuff you do.
Good tips.
I've actually just set up a wall mounted camera mount to make it easier for me to record from a second angle in these videos, so hopefully should be able to avoid such moments where my hands obscure the view.
Thank you.
do you have to run a battery recalibrate via BIOS after this?
great video btw, thanks
Bump this question?
Where's the part you go over the SSD?
Thank you
You're welcome
NVME SSD only runs at dual-lane speed (temps), so unless you have done some seriously dangerous BIOS modding, there is no need for a 4x speed SSD. An Intel 660p maxes out at around 2x speed, so a good cheaper option :-)
Battery now £120 or £132 :-(
