STOP back pain when diving with this DIY weight vest trick

  • Whether you get back pain or not from loading up your weight belt when diving or spearfishing, a weight vest/harness is a great way to distribute ballast over the body more evenly. Sitting on the surface when spearfishing for long periods of time with a bunch of lead weights pushing on your lumbar spine can quickly become painful. Traditionally a weight vest or harness will have rectangular pockets for solid flat bars of lead, which aren't very comfortable. In this video I'll show you how to make the most comfortable weights for your vest using lead shot and nylon socks. I've been using these for a decade and they are fantastic. Remember lead is not good for you, wash your hands immediately after handling.

    Just thinking out loud, the lycra socks, I would double it up before tying the knot, and tye both socks with one knot. I like a figure 8 knot, rather than a half-hitch. Here it doesn't matter, but in a rope, it unties easier.

    well I'd like to make a neck weight and maybe even try this out for my vest even tough this has not been a problem for me. I guess becaus I only dive in cold water and my 7mm suit is enough padding.
    Problem is I can't get my hands on these led shots in my country. I found them one place, but it was a crazy price for a tiny, tiny amout of balls.

  • @HohnkeOutdoors
    @HohnkeOutdoors Před 3 lety

    Maybe it's easier to get a hold of in the UK, I asked about getting lead shot here in Australia for reloading shot shells and was told it was special order and pretty expensive. If someone offers to take you game bird shooting you'd be crazy not to go. All the ones I've tasted so far are so much better than any duck or chicken you get from a store, it's like the difference between a store bought fish and that awesome target species you took yourself with a speargun 😁 Love your videos, see you on the next one

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  Před 3 lety +1

      I’ve bought it in Australia many times. Just approach the gun stores with a honest approach saying you’re making dive weights. It’s used for many things other than shotgun shells.
      Hopefully going on a shoot later this year for some game birds.

    we use normal diving belt then have those "dive pockets" and place it on the front of our belly. instead of lead we fill it with coins :3 (for 1 dollar i can get 200x25cents php).
    benefit is the pockets levitate below you with a small gap between you and the pocket making it very comfortable.
    downside they wiggle around a lil bit but it works very well. You do need to remove the belt before jumping up in the boat (if you have a distance between you and the edge) since they do catch some water.

      Just buy a mask, a knife and go to the water, for octopus, cuttlefish, shells and seafood you can catch bare hand, i begin with a cheap trident arpon with an useless ruber from decathlon, and with that i caught all the species enunciated before and more red mullet and flat fish such as plaice, sole, etc... after that i bought a cheap used speargun, which i don't recomend because was so old that i need to buy all the accessories. Just get used to be underwater, to understand the behaviour of the fishes, the dangers of the underwater environment (blackouts, underwater currents near holes and cravasses, sharp rocks, poisonous or aggressives animals, nets and fishing lines, tangled in your own line, lose gear that can make you get stuck
      ) and meet other speros who can be later on, your buddys when you want to dive deeper and longer. And something great, you have the magic of all the teachings of the youtubers like Daniel Mann.

    Just a heads-up: lead birdshots are illegal in many countries and there is a chance they are gonna be banned in the entire EU, along with lead bullets and lead fishing sinks/lures. This COULD make possession/use illegal IDK. Also some countries demand dive weights to have some sort of coating. But any way awesome DIY and always love using the wives clothes for actual important stuff

    • @philipbohi983
      @philipbohi983 Před 3 lety

      Use shot designed for waterfowl, like Tungsten or Bismuth. Tungsten is more dense than lead, so it takes a bit less shot to make a weight. Also, they’re more expensive and they can corrode in salt water so be sure to rinse and dry the weights well before storage. They are both non-toxic metals and safe to handle.
      There is steel shot, but that will rust away quickly, even if coated with tin or copper - it’s designed to dissolve over time (so the stuff that doesn’t hit a bird will return to the earth). Plus it’s not dense, so it takes more to make a weight.

    That is uhm... not very good for the environment... like... the lead or rather its ions dissolve in water which is not good for the organisms in the water and also if the sock breaks for some reason(sharp object for example) you have lead everywhere and cant take it out of the water again... if you really need a flexible lead bag buy it from a diving company... those are sealed, and dont use them anymore when they break.
    For reference about the toxicity: The German Sport Divers Association recommends to plasti-dip even traditional weights, which have a way smaller surface area.

    Quei pallini , se dispersi, inquinano più di una petroliera affondata. Lasciate perdere

      Those pellets, if dispersed, pollute more than a sunken tanker. Forget it
