In the neon-lit era of the 1980’s, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were Christian royalty and the dazzling stars of American televangelism. They beamed a message of faith and prosperity into millions of living rooms every night. They promised their viewers heavenly rewards and earthly riches if they would just donate to them; and they donated in mass... Together, Jim and Tammy Faye built an empire of $240 million a year… They purchased three homes, owned multiple cars and limos, spent $2,000 a month on electricity to heat their swimming pools, and even built a giant Christian theme park to rival Disney. But their life of excess was destined for destruction when a series of financial misdeeds and personal transgressions dramatically unraveled on the same screens that had cast them into the spotlight… Scandals involving a young babysitter, embezzlement, a Christian pimp, and so much more. This is a story of lust, crime, money, and pimpin’ for Jesus… This is the story of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker and the fall of their televangelism empire.

Can’t stand prosperity gospel… it implies that poor Christians aren’t believing the right way. It’s sickening.
The prosperity gospel is false doctrine.

The interview by Tammy where she speaks to the gay pastor going through treatment for AIDS is incredibly beautiful and heart-opening. I don’t agree with most of what these people do. But her decision to put a spotlight on people with AIDS & to beseech her community to care for them, hug them, support them? I have to give credit where it’s due. Thank you for sharing this!
I'll admit that it's one of the most decent things Tammy Faye has done especially considering how prevalent the AIDS scare was back then.
Not religious at all but that Interview made me cry.
I’m so surprised she showed that gay pastor compassion. I wish most Christian’s were that compassionate towards lgbtq people.
@@arentan5844do you guys think it makes sense for a gay person to be a pastor? I’m lgbtq and I used to identify as Christian and got a lot of criticism by Christian’s for it
She did NOT put a "spotlight" on AIDS, I assure you. That is absolutely RIDICULOUS.
My grandmother fell for their brainwashing and sent them money all the time that she couldn't afford. She did without for them
I feel like that interview with the gay pastor with aids literally saved lives
Doing one good thing doesn't right a thousand wrongs but then again, I would be doing exactly what others do and go against the very teachings of my faith if I didnt believe in redemption so... I do have to give credit to Tammy for being an open minded person towards LGBT members and AIDS during a time where people of her own faith considered the illness as a deserved punishment for their "way of life". What she and her husband did was wrong in so many ways BUT that is a big redeeming quality, granted against a big list of bad ones but still
Tammy was kind, open, and non-judgmental towards the gay and HIV-positive/AIDS communities. This was practically unheard of among conservative Christians in the 80s.
That's fine , but she was still a grifter.
Still unheard of tv evangilists today speak of hating gays and bragging about how rich they are
Just another hypocrite wanting your money. You fell for this huge scam obviously.
I just learned this today. It's a shame their wrong doing eclipsed her approach to the guy community. 😯
Yeah, their money was green too
The amount of wealth acquired by mega churches off the backs of poor struggling people is nothing short of obscene.
It doesn't escape GOD'S eye's. Hopefully all --- REPENT AND FOLLOW JESUS ❤

2 Peter 2:1-6 KJV
[1] But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. [2] And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. [3] And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. [4] For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; [5] and spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; [6] and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
[10] but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
[12] But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
Watch The Leap of Faith with Steve Martin and Debra Winger and see how thick the game gets.

I remember back many years ago a joke Johnny Carson told about a natural disaster involving an oil spill off the California coast. Then the government officials realized it was just Tammy Faye in swimming! Revlon and other cosmetic companies had to just LOVE her!

Thank you so much for sharing this. You are so sweet and it means a lot to me because I worked at PTL and was a closeted gay young man at the time. I love that Tammy embraced my gay community. Jim choking down his doomsday bucket-soup was probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen

So much fakery going on in that evangelical community, and that's just another example, indeed.

I remember being a HUNGRY kid with 4 siblings and my mom watching these people and sending money for "blessings " the Bakers promised as her kids remained hungry.
My lady friend still sends money and all she talks about is being broke.
So sorry you went through that
🤣I was wondering, when the comment about on their dog having it own air conditioner dog house it going to coming up.
😂That where Donald Trump learned the term Fake News came from Jim Bakker.
@@Chu3505 was that Jan with TBN?
I think Jim was the most devious one in this sad, sad duo.
Probably, but then Tammy SURE enjoyed spending all that money, yes indeedy!
As a seminary student I ministered to the widow of an Assemblies of God church planter. She was a very depressed, financially struggling fan of Jim and Tammy Baker, and had visited Heritage Village. She very much enjoyed her time there but it did not resolve what troubled her. To make a long story short, I came to suspect she had suffered sexual abuse as a child. I asked, she broke down in tears saying her father had molested her. She expressed anger and hatred of her father, said she ran away from home to marry the older minister to escape her situation. I believe the hidden and unresolved anger, shame, depression and feelings of guilt contributed to a suicide and prison for two of their three children. The good news for her was working through all that stuff and then taking it together to God in prayer seems to have released her from some of the pain; some weeks later a daughter I had never met came to see me, saying "Thank you for helping my mother. I have never seen her in such a good condition as she is now." My guess is the mother told the daughter about what had happened in her life. What if anything does this have to do with the Bakers? My suspicion is they provided at least a momentary escape from shame, guilt and/or spiritual boredom for a multitude of people whose inner needs were not met by "that old time religion" that so often punishes rather than comforts. The sad thing is the Bakers used Jesus as a covering for crass materialism (Prosperity Gospel) and at least in Jim's case, predatory sexual behavior. Although they acquired great wealth, they were "blind, poor and naked" when it comes to appreciating some of Jesus' teachings and example.
Did they preach about gluttony?
Why am I ugly crying during Tammy's interview with Steve? 😢 that was actually so beautiful.
Omg me too 😂
I ugly cried several times while editing it! Steve and Tammy were so precious together.

It was so legitimately touching. I was choking up a little while listening in the car. Right in the feels
Same, I'm not religious but every single time I see something like that I cry. I think it's because I've only ever experienced vitriol from my own religious family members (they're Jehovah's Witnesses,) so seeing a religious leader especially back then being kind towards LGBT people hits me right in the feels.
Religious hypocrites are simply the worst.
Joel Osteen comes to mind. Living like a King!! I’m a Christian but I don’t really do organised religion. I don’t understand how these preachers don’t see the hypocrisy after reading the Bible. The Bible specifically talks about wealth like this and what a Christian should do. It’s not hoarding it all to yourself.

Unironically a BOP.
Tammy’s display of empathy, bravery, love, and compassion throughout her interview with gay pastor/AIDS patient Steve Pieters is a perfect example of how true Christians should always act towards marginalized communities. ❤
Absolutely! I also believe the ground breaking interview was the catalyst to bring down the ministry. There were forces (Jerry Falwell, political/church leaders, etc.) as there so often is when people reach a level of notoriety as Jim and Tammy Faye did, waiting to burn the whole thing down.
Had Tammy not done the interview Jim's embezzlment would most certainly have continued on much longer. He definitely was not the only one with his hands in the till. He was just the fall guy.
I know! I grew up in the 80s and I hated Tammy Faye and Jim Baker, but seeing that clip of her showing compassion to an aids victim really shocked me and made me see her in a different light. It brought tears to my eyes -I had many gay friends in the 80s and had forgotten how taboo is was back then. It was heartwarming. ❤
Yeah. I didn't expect that from her.
It’s interesting I just saw a clip of London pride from a year ago, a few older Christian’s were reading the gospel and holding up a few signs in their small area, guarded by police. Those marginalised people, many hundreds of them were aggressive, disgustingly over sexualising themselves, basically behaving like a pack of wild beasts, one of them…..a male ripped a sign from an older ladies hands, they show no compassion, they show utter contempt for their elders that do not participate in the marginalised season long parades……love really isn’t love anyone who isn’t classed as marginalised is hated, if that’s marginalised, we have a serious problem.
@@seeyounexttuesday3716have you ever thought that maybe there's are reason gay people don't like the communities that have been murdering them for centuries?

They used God to make money.
Tammy is fake.
Tammy Faye was no angel in being part of this money-making operation, but that amazing episode on AIDS and the gay community-in 1985!-has to earn her some serious grace. It's 40 years later and most Evangelicals STILL don't have that kind of compassion and loving stance toward gay people.
Some have no compassion towards anyone...

I lived and worked in Rochester, Minnesota at the same time Jim Bakker was incarcerated at the Federal Medical Center there. The office I worked at was on a large campus that shared a common, grassy yard with the Federal Medical Center. One morning, a co-worker yelled for all of us to run to the curved glass window at the opposite side of our round building. Here was Jim Bakker, barefoot and in pajamas, running through the grass, followed closely by two out-of-shape prison guards. One eventually caught up with him, and they fell in the wet morning grass. They walked back towards the prison building, Jim’s jammies covered in grass stains. It’s an image I’ll never forget.

Understandably, this used to embarrass my boyfriend at the time. When his friends would ask him what "PTL" meant, he would say, "Philadelphia Tennis League"
You handled this so well. I grew up watching all of these, and it's so crazy to look back and see how plainly they were scamming innocent and giving people who just wanted to help!
"Excuses excuses you hear them every day" 🎶
That interview with Pastor Steve was heartbreaking. Hearing her voice break tore me up. RIP both ❤
I didn’t know he was still alive!!!! I gotta say that Tammy Faye impressed me. Bless her.
Last I saw, he's selling preparedness food and supplies. Still scamming people by selling absolute garbage for more than it's worth
I came home from work one night and my wife was watching the share a thon. They raffled off Jims sweater as if it was the cloak of Jesus. I got angry and told her if i ever caught her watching that sickness. I would throw the tv out. I explained why and she saw it.
His greed for money seem to be insatiable.
Her interview with the AIDs sufferer would have been ground breaking on a news channel, but on a Christian pastor show is incredible. It was very authentic and emotional.
Tapping into the gay scene result more cash coming in
@@thetruthk5138 ...at the risk of alienating their much larger (and wealthy) fundamentalist following - you forget that bit.

@@Don_Dewitt Thanks I live in the real world
The end with Jim Bakker selling the food buckets LOL a zebra will never change its stripes lol 😂 WOW their life makes for a good movie and the ending, whoa!!!! This is beyond! WOW 😯
See: "The Eyes of Tammy Faye".
The interview with the gay pastor who was suffering from AIDS was so touching. Look how emotional she is - she was ahead of her time! I never knew she did this, I thought she was just a rubbish person but no she was a trailblazer.
I don’t think anyone outside the LGBTQ community was aware she did this. It’s certainly changed my view of her. She may have gleefully taken advantage of her husband’s grifting and book-cooking, but she showed a rare courage and compassion by standing up for the marginalized at a time when the federal government was denying AIDS research grants.
I'm sorry... but when a couple name BOTH their children after themselves... that's a massive red flag that completely betrays their values. LOL 😂 😂 😂 "Hi, my name is Jim and this is my wife Tammy and these are our children Jim and Tammy."
I’m surprised the college expelled em for getting married. Seems they’d WANT a young couple to get married, so as to avoid “a life of sin” & what not.
Exactly what I thought!!! Wild!
Same. That seems weird.
Students were to be single and chaste to not be distracted for studies
I thought that myself. Get them in wedlock so there are no “accidents.”
Yeah for sure, usually the institution’s (church, school), encourage marriage, so I don’t understand what happened there. Puzzling…
Jim Bakker is a real piece of work. I'll say that
The soup bit is sending me 😂😂😂
Jim eating the soup and coughing is INCREDIBLE, thank you for adding in the food commercial I needed a good laugh today
The food bucket scenes had me dying 😭😂
i was looking for this comment.....its had me crying of laughter🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just furnish your home in food buckets!! It’s not dystopian at all. 😂
Unbelievable. I was liiiike😳
Jim chocking on his own soup is hilarious 😂
Great documentary. I wouldn’t trust Jim Bakker with a penny!
My grandparents gave them so much money. They become one of there regular supporters
It’s extremely sad how people believed them and wanted something in believe in.
I’m looking at Jim Baker’s survival infomercials and I’m like, yeah, when I want a bulk quantity of canned soup, I’ll buy it from my nearest Costco, thanks. 😂
Ya but the money you spend on Jim's products will be used to help the poor...lol just kidding. It'll be used to pay off another victim or to buy a new car or probably hair plugs. Edited for spelling.
I feel like Ned Flanders watching the clips
You’re comment got me in my heart!!! I am so far from Ned, but I was feeling like the hardest drink I’d ever ask for is a white wine spritzer! I was clutching at ALL the pearls!
Jesus, the food peddeling is insane.
Omg! How is it possible that scam artists & fraudsters, go to prison, and then just get back to their criminal ways & still have so many followers & continue stealing millions from naive, ignorant people. Sickens me.
The section of him hawking his buckets of Apocalypse Slop starting at 01:29:08 is truly hilarious. Telling people to drape cloths over them to use as living room furniture! 😂
Apocalypse Slop! Good One!
Then he put the same spoon back, the one he ate from 💀
@@Mary1337 I almost choked Jim-Style when he did that 🤣
Wellllll...it WOULD be an upgrade from my current empty carboard boxes serving as a coffee table, LOL!
I loved the Tammy interview, I was actually surprised. I'm not talking about all Christians or all people, but some wouldn't have done that. I wasn't born yet so this scandal is new to me.
She was probably understanding of LGBT because her own husband was gay 🙄
I was a teenager and although I don’t remember the interview-we generally looked at these televangelists as a joke, especially Tammy Faye with those eyelashes…but this was definitely unheard of at the time. I’m shocked! A gay minister!
She was a hypocrite financial criminal. You fell for her scam and that makes you not too bright.
@@Eitner100 you're not too bright if you think ANY person with that kind of wealth isn't a hypocrite financial criminal. Not one is innocent. But some are better than others, and it seems Tammy at least was genuinely compassionate, which is more than 99% of other people/politicians/prosperity pastors are.
@@kaylacallaton7829 of course she was compassionate where there was a whole new field of donors who hadn't been tapped by ministries heretofore.
Tammy supported the LGBT community without fear of what everyone else thought about it. That's when I gained my respect for her. In my opinion, she truly did love people and wanted to help them and let them know they had someone in their corner in the form of herself.
Well, all that money her and her husband were spending (Yep, she spent BIG.) could've gone to AIDS care/research if Tammy really cared.
@@747fa I grew up watching her and know all about her money habits. I don't think any less of her because of what she could have done. She did more than enough in an era where even talking about AIDS with a gay man on live TV was considered very taboo.
The journey of all men and women is full of trials and tribulations and what starts off in one direction can easily go another as we take things for granted and stumble into the pit falls. It’s hard to stay humble and there has only been one who was perfect and we crucified him.
Tammy Faye has me tearing up..😢
She had a love affair with a black woman runNing skynet who pretended to be an alien while killing americans.
The LOVE of money is the root of all evil
The love of money is the root of all KINDS of evil is correct as stated in the Holy Bible.
Says who? How much money was there in the perfect creation on earth? None. It was not the root of the fall - the root of all evil. How much money was there in the perfect creation in Heaven from which Lucifer and the third part of the angels fell? None. It was not the root of the fall - the root of all evil. Instead, Isaiah tells us that Lucifer exalted himself above his fellow angels [his equal peers] wanting to be God and ruling over them. If you really think that a writing that says "the love of money is the root of all evil", to your shock and amazement - that's a communist doctrine of the 666 beast system that demands that persons surrender all private property calling ownership of private property "the love of money". Then, the 666 beast demands his communist slaves take a mark so that they cannot buy or sell individually but are owned as his property. The trick being that the communist dictator demands all surrender all private property so that he owns them as slaves owning everything himself. It's a con.
Don't believe things are scripture without testing them. Because Caesar who crucified the Lord and is the 666 beast officeholder - canonized fake scripture.
@@LV-wl7chit's GREED, the lust for power. That was currency before money was created.
Power, control and people doing your bidding.
Lucifer was "rich" with the people he controlled and turned against God.
It's people loving power, control that money buys and the never ending greed of always needing more.
@@heathercallahan3642 i was paraphrasing. The point of the message is the same. When people love money more than God or love it so much they idolize it (and the things it can buy) it opens the door to all kinds of sins in our lives.
