  • Brian Scalabrine was never a great NBA player, but there was a time where he helped the Nets win a pivotal Game 5 against the eventual champs in the 2004 Detroit Pistons. Today, we go over how he made a huge impact.

      Yeah, it doesn't seem like it when you're watching these guys dominate in college, but the gap between NBA players and the vast majority of college players, even at the D-I level, is massive. That's why they only have two rounds in the draft these days, and even most first rounders don't end up as anything more than role players on their squads. Anyone who makes a roster deserves at least that level of respect as one of the best in the world.

    Brian Scalabrine is a baller. He's close to 7' tall with a jumper. He's not the most mobile guy, I'll admit that. But he is a very smart defender, he has a high basketball IQ. I've seen him live in non NBA competition and you can see how much better he is than other players. He played at USC, I remember seeing him live in college and he was a star at USC. The NBA always makes these guys look worse than they really are. They only display some of their skills in the league. When you see NBA players playing outside of the NBA, you can get a better understanding of how skilled they really are when they are not playing against the best athletes in the world.

    I think a big part of what separates a average NBA player from a star is consistency and reliability. You gotta be able to play at a high level basically every game. Even if you're a role player, the team is still depending on you to play your part.
    MJ could still go out and get you 25 points, but he's not doing that for a whole season + postseason.

    I think that this guy was born 15 years too early. In the NBA today a lot of teams would cover him with money just to be a shooting 5. At the time the value of a player like this was not understood. Today he would be used as a specialist in a different offensive and defensive set-up, and you could highlight his strengths (shooting, plus he was not a dumb player and he could handle the ball a bit) and hide his weaknesses.

    • @PanzehVideos
      @PanzehVideos Před 2 lety +5

      Nah, the difference is mostly that the Corliss Williamsons of today are told to develop 3 point shots rather than playing more Scalabrines. There's a reason guys like Ryan Anderson fell out of the league- now you can get players who do other things but also shoot the 3 which makes them not a liability on offense.

    Fun fact: Scalabrine could have won a championship as an assistant coach of the Golden State Warriors.
    He joined Mark Jackson’s coaching staff, but was reassigned by Mark Jackson to coach their G-league team when there was internal in-fighting between the staff and front office vs Mark Jackson (top defensive assistant Darren Erman was also fired for trying to secretly record Mark Jackson to prove he was contentious).
    However, the front office did tell Brian that they were willing to give him a second shot to audition as one of Steve Kerr’s coaching assistants, but he declined and returned to commentate for the Celtics.
    Then the Warriors go on to win the championship in Kerr’s 1st year.
    And remember, the next year they reeled off their 73 win season with Luke Walton coaching half of the season while Steve Kerr recovered from back pain.
    So Scalabrine hypothetically could’ve won a ring as an assistant coach, then stepped up and coached during their 73 win season for around half of their wins.

    I want to say something that is not central but that Daniel said : the pivotal games. He said the game 5 is pivotal, but in fact the game 2 and 4 are more pivotal than game 5. That's because there a BIG difference between 1-1 and 2-0 because in the second case you gotta win 2 games to simply even the series while in the first case the series is already evened. Psychologically there a big difference. And there's also a big difference between 3-1 and 2-2 for the same reasons and also because in the 3-1 situation, you cannot do a mistake because otherwise, you lose (but that's true that in the 2-0 situation, if you lose again, you have a very small chance to win the series because I don't think any team ever catch up a 0-3 delay).
    The game 5 is less pivotal because you only have 1 more game to win if you lose after a 2-2 situation. But like I said before in other words, you gotta win 2 more games if you lose the game 2 or 4.

      @@zoobiezaa not even a good shooter, what? Scalabrine may not be good at many things, but his 3pt shooting is one of them. 34-35% 3PT% for a big guy ain't a liability. In fact, that's even considerably higher than Kobe and MJ's career 3PT% (albeit on higher difficulty), but still far from "not even a good shooter".
