Hotel Transylvania is an interesting franchise. Sometimes, I love the characters and the world. But boy does the franchise try to run them into the ground with the most basic of plotlines and a questionably animation style. So instead of harking on the tragedies of the later sequels, let's look back today on the spark that started it all. After all, I have quite a soft spot for the first movie. This is The Scene That Changed Hotel Transylvania 1...

...Welp. What a shame. But maybe it was unavoidable, if even the first movie was a 50/50 split on reception... - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I do miss THIS Johnny, where he's adventurous, is interested in learning and traveling. And that he and Drac have a genuine respect for each other and their different points of view. They shared a somber moment, but actually listened to each other. It's what's sorely missing from all the other films.
agree 😔
R.I.P old Johnny, he will be missed.
Yup, just like movie!Ron Weasley. Both redheads, funny comic relief yet very engaging character arc in the 1st movie *only* .
Sad that they're underutilised backseat in sequels.. ☝🏻😮💨
Haha Jonathan
It was way easier to believe he got a goth gf
"The Legend is wrong." God. DAMN.
The fact that ADAM SANDLER was able to pull off such a heartwrenching delivery just still blows my mind. It's hands down his best performance. This scene is incredible and why animation can do things only live action could dream of. The shadows, the lighting, the composition. It all comes together to create one of the best scenes in Hotel Transylvania.
And I love how he says "you're one of the good ones." Just. Soft. Quiet. In that moment he was not some legendary centuries old creature of myth but...a father learning something new about a world he didn't really live in.
WAIT HOW DID I NOT KNOW ADAM SANDLER WAS DRACULA TILL NOW?
Wow... that actually makes the voice-acting so much more impressive
even though he had hit and miss films in his resume, Adam Sandler can STILL pull it off.
@@dragon5wildfire813 oh let me tell you I think I out did the iconic Family Guy "WHAAAAAAAAA?!" when I first found that out lol. Sounds NOTHING like him usually. It's just wild. He pulls off that Transylvania accent SO good.
This is one of his best, but don’t diss Sandler, he has great performances in other movies
Happy Gilmore, Blended, wedding Singer, just go with it, click, uncut gems
@@joshhurst9770 oh absolutely but this was around the time he was more known for the bad movies vs the good ones. So this kind of heartfelt performance from him came to be QUITE the surprise.
Sad how the sequels decided to take a more comedic approach (which weren't even funny) while the first movie was genuinely heartfelt
I thought they were funny. But I do prefer the first over the sequels.
I do love the first three movies. But the 4th one?... eehhh... it was so freaking weak. My top favorites have to be the first two movies 😊
@@firemiracle felt like a cash grab tbh
The first movie was amazing, the second had some good bits but overall meh, the 3rd is great(2nd best movie), haven't seen the 4th but it looks hilarious.
@@RedRaikou I more or less agree on this
I amazing how this movie is able to shift from hilarious to heartfelt and back again and still have it all feel natural.
Indeed
@UCLJq7M5KNG6R17iGyuEjRhg no way i care so much about this very intriguing information
the bot comment (and account) got deleted nvm
Second one wasnt bad
5:51 An interesting detail: the film director is of Russian origin, and the word “Lubov” from “Ruins of Lubov” means “love” in Russian, meaning this castle is literally “Love castle”, which fits the legend perfectly
And "Ruins of Love" fits even better
well a bit of history there thank you.
Poor Johnny got the Cosmo treatment. Originally a heartfelt loving guy who acts silly, turned into an absolute idiot for cheap laughs 😔
“Yeah? Well, well, you know what I think?”
“Who cares what you think now. You're a girl!”

So sad they weren't able to recapture what made the first movie so good.
I probably rewatch Hotel Transylvania 1 once a year or so with friends.
It’s fitting for October. But having said that, while I like this movie, I’m not big on vampires in general.

I think it would've been good for Drac to find love again, but *only if* the Hotel Transylvania movies retained as much heart as the first one did. The way the movies are now, his remarriage just looks like a baby we'd also throw out with the bathwater, if you get what I mean 🥹

@@bighand1530 I see, It's fine don't worry, It's also interesting to think that drac may have been the more diminished of the two in the end perhaps? He might have had more obvious character traits than Johnny did before being flanderised
Like movie!Ron Weasley ☹️
Okay, I just wanted to make mention of this because I didn't see anyone else talk of it, but Johnny was high when he found the hotel. You can see it in his posture, calm behavior, and how casually he talks in the first few scenes despite being yanked around the lobby at Mach 5 by Dracula. It's also why he didn't think about how weird it was to see flaming guys in a town walking into a strange underground tunnel and just kept taking photos like normal, he was positively zooted. I remember my parents mentioning this when we first watched this movie, as they had a few stoner neighbors. Unfortunately it seems that he went from stoner to stupid in the later films, oh well I guess.
honestly this makes the movie a bit better knowing he is just high and wondering the woods and I kind of wish we had a scene or two of him not quite shrugging it off and only when he fully sobers it up he realizes "oh holy F@ck monsters are real" also totally agree I found everything past first to be sequentially less interesting with how flanderized be became from a stoner to just outright stupid
@@wolfyblackknight8321 So THIS Johnny was the CHAD “Trivia Stoner ” and in later films they wanted to cater to mouth drooling babies so they made him Peter Griffin for kids. Lol.
Ngl Adam Sandler did a good job with conveying his emotions in this scene
Showed that Adam Sandler isn’t just a comedy guy (Uncut Gems for example)
I haven’t seen Uncut Gems yet.
I think I saw one comment or something say that Sandler's a good actor who just keeps getting casted for bad movies.
Don't forget Punch Drunk Love

@@bighand1530 is it just me or does the hotel Transylvania movies feel like a reboot to the Shrek franchise like the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies were remastered to the Andrew Garfield ones right after Shrek Forever After came out 2 years later right before when Hotel Transylvania even existed
@@Mariofanaticanimations I can see the Shrek comparisons.

In the first film, Johnny is actually pretty accurate to his book counterpart Johnathan Harker. If you read Dracula, before he realizes the danger he’s in, Johnathan is almost overly cheerful and very interested in the culture of Transylvania. He literally gushes over the food he eats on his way to Dracula’s castle, and even gets the recipe so he can introduce his fiancée Mina to it once he goes home. I’ve heard people blame Adam Sandler for making Hotel Transylvania nothing more than a simple comedy, and if that is the case it’s a bit of a shame. I would’ve loved to see what Genndy Tartakovsky would’ve made of the film.
I kind of doubt it would all be Adam’s fault. Plus, the first movie was in development hell, so the finished product being good and capable of producing sequels is honestly a miracle.
There's a book? Of the same title? By whom may I ask?
@@frostdragon1950 it’s not a Hotel Transylvania book, sorry for the confusion. I’m talking about Dracula by Bram Stoker; Johnathan Harker (the POV character for several chapters, is a solicitor, but the first few chapters especially have him describing his travels like he’s writing a travel blog.
Honestly wish we had a scene of Johnny being hyped over paprika chicken like in the books
I absolutely LOVE the emotion in Drac's voice when he speaks.
*"The legend is wrong."*
You can tell how much it hurts to remember and relive the memory. How low his voice is, the subtle cracks, it's just CHEFS KISS
Honestly? Props to Adam Sandler in this scene. I never knew he could do emotional scenes like this so well.
Adam Sandler is a good actor and a good comedian he just chooses to be in shitty movies
@@boxman7044 Zohan is the peak of his comedy
This movie I’ve consistently loved for years. It’s not stellar, but it isn’t trying to be. It’s sense of slapstick humor and how it’s characters move is just super charming. The casting can literally get no better.
And the emotional beats are great!
There is just a lot of heart and energy put into this movie, and passion is admirable!
What's your opinion on the newer movies?
Luckily you can still separate the first movie from the others. The first one holds up. It would be best if it were left as one
@@Chris.530 There are things I like in the sequels, but unfortunately they aren’t nearly as excellent as this first one. Dazz makes an incredible point on how they did Johnny so wrong after this movie and I agree 100%. I absolutely love his character and sense of humor in this 1st film. While he does have a couple of good moments, none of them were serious. Which just makes me sad. But, I try to not let the sequels ruin this masterpiece.
It's still wild to me that this Dracula and Netflix's Castlevania Dracula have almost the exact same tragedy, but the delt with it in very different ways.
Hotel Drac decided to hide away from the world and protect his daughter and other monsters.
Castlevania Drac waged a suicidal war on Humanity.
This scene is one of the most emotional parts of the film. In retrospect, Mavis is all Dracula has left of his late wife, which explains why he's so overprotective of her. You can tell that Dracula sorely misses his wife.
this is probably one of the most nuanced scenes in HT1 holy its so good. It just makes me more mad that every single one of the writers who cared saw their story turn into a soulless series with each of their characters getting assassinated
I've never watched the sequels because I was afraid of exactly what (apparently) happened. I can pretend that the first film exists in isolation, and truly hints at Johnny and Mavis's future.
They really aren’t bad.
The second and third are fine in my opinion, but they're definitely not as good as the first. The fourth one was just weak for a variety of reasons, but the main thing is I just don't believe the plot. If it had happened as the second movie? Sure, it would be way more believable.
@@NicolasClark7732 The first one is one of my favourite movies of all time. The next two are . . . decent, I suppose. Not nearly as good as the first, but nowhere near as bad as the fourth. That fourth movie is, to put it mildly, terrible.
Smart move. The first movie is the only one worth watching. Lots of people love the 2nd movie as well but personally it just made me deeply uncomfortable.
My personal opinion is that I pretty much enjoy the first 3 Hotel Transylvania a lot cause of what they truly are. A High-Budget Saturday Morning Cartoon and honestly with how 90% of most animated movies tend to just feel like they are trying to capture real life in how characters move and such, its just so refreshing to see films like Hotel Transylvania that actually embrace the fact that it's animated and so the things would impossible to do in Live-Action.
Same. I think the second one is actually my favorite of the three since we get to see more of the gang as a whole while not going full force into the gags like in the third one. (I still enjoy three, but it doesn't strike the balance between goofy and heartwarming like the first two.)
the Hotel Transylvania series is depressing because of it’s downward spiral despite the opportunities. Each one could be better, they have plots that can make them better than the last, yet fail every time. It shows in the characters as well how they show development in the first movie, but that’s just forgotten in the future movies (lookin at you Johnny)
If the sequels wouldn’t exist, people would think of this movie more highly
I’m fine with the second film existing. It’s the only one that tries to be a legit sequel to the first film and presented some interesting ideas that explored the relationship between humans and monsters after the first film where humans are now allowed as guest into the hotel and even some humans having romantic relationships with monsters. Plus, some stuff did feel like a natural progression for how a sequel to Hotel Transylvania would be like opening with Johnny and Mavis’ wedding, even if some feel like it could have been rushed, having their first (and only) child Dennis and meeting Johnny’s family from the states. I could definitely do without the last 2 though.
One question I always have from this scene is how did Mavis survive? We see in the last scene with Martha alive, she had Mavis in her arms and yet the angry mob only killed Martha.
Maybe Dracula was just fast enough
It's possible Martha died saving Mavis, it's not an on screen moment
@@andrewgreeb916 Yeah.That too
Martha probs hid Mavis somewhere, and Drac was able to track her down
@@Faux_Sunlight That’s probably what I was thinking.
I feel the best comedies I feel are the ones that are able to stop and be serious for moment, even for a bit. This is because I feel it makes things more real and gets the viewer more invested in the characters and story itself as you get to see a more genuine side. If it's always constant jokes it makes it hard to take any of the characters, or the movie seriously.
When we see characters in their vulnerable state, they become actual people instead of a trope. A person doesn't act the same 24/7.
I wished they explained how exactly did the villagers discover that Dracs family were vampires. They could have had a potential plot for a villain. Like that another vampire was terrorizing and feeding off the villagers until one night the vampire killed someone like a little girl and it finally caused the villagers to snap and form a mob. But they had no knowledge on who exactly killed her, just that she was killed by a vampire. The vampire then takes advantage of the mobs ignorance and pins his crime on Drac, guides the angry mob to where Drac is, then gives them the slip.
this does kinda villainise monsters in a way the movie is trying to avoid so i think a really simple misunderstanding deepened by stereotypes of the humans would be more logical
@@okvulpine I wouldn't say it would villainise monsters. More like give the idea that no matter what side your on you will always have individuals from either group who are just as much susceptible to being a selfish and evil prick as anyone else. Like when Drac asked Johnny if "just because more humans became more accepting of monsters, could you really tell me that their aren't any humans that will never accept them?" a rebuttal of that would be "just because you say that most monsters aren't evil, could you really tell me that their weren't any monsters who actually did something that gave humans a legitimate reason to fear them?" In HT 2 Drac said that his dad used to steal people's souls with Bella and the other giant bats. That sounds like a pretty legitimate reason for someone to fear monsters if you ask me. It's more the idea that humans and monsters aren't really so different from each other, in terms that both sides are capable of having self interested individuals who can be down right evil and deserving of the title "monster."
@@okvulpine Plus with all the crazy powers vampires have, you don't think their weren't ANY vampires/monsters that felt superior over humans? That their weren't vampires/monsters who were like "humans are such weak and pathetic creatures compared to us!" And didn't view them as sentient creatures and more like squawking animals to toy with and use as livestock? That their weren't monsters that terrorised and tormented humans because they legitimatly enjoyed it the same way some humans hunt animals strictly for sport just because they can and get a thrill from hunting them.
@@Roark787Wasn't this the case with Vlad and his bats?
I would consider the table battle scene to be the real turning point. The portrait scene wouldn't work if Johnny hadn't broken through to Drac in the prior scene.
Of the whole series, I liked the second movie best (Dennis and Winnie are so cute together), didn't care for the third and haven't seen the last yet.
The third movie did martha so dirty
Scenes like this remind me that Adam Sandler can act. I wish he had more openings to do so.
Adam Sandler has never been a bad actor. A shame he only ends up in terrible or mediocre comedies. The man really needs to talk to his agent about opportunities.
Hotel Transylvania 1 was a beautiful thing that has nostalgic feel and lives beyond expectations
It's good to see some appreciation for the first movie. It's far from perfect, but it is a surprisingly good movie with a lot of awesome storytelling. It's such a shame that the later movies in this series ruined the first's reputation.
After Ice Age, I learnt sometimes the best thing is to just pretend the sequels(or some of the sequels) does not exist. For Hotel Transylvania, I just pretend all the sequels do not exist, Johnny and Mavis is off traveling and it will be a long time before they consider for a child.
Exactly. This is what I hated about the 2nd movie. They end the first one implying Johnny and Mavis would be exploring the world and finding adventure together before settling down somewhere or maybe back at the Hotel and eventually have a kid after a few years. The 2nd movie immediately rushed them into a marriage and then spent 5 years at the hotel raising Dennis. The 1st movie is the only cannon one in my opinion.
the fact that after watching the newer movies i actually FORGOT he was a traveller. thanks for reminding me why this series actually had potential
I notice the animation style. In Hotel Transylvania, the characters designs were a bit humanoid, but in Hotel Transylvania 4, they look more cartoony l.
@E . A Definitely. In the fourth everyone's crazy cartoonish and it's very unappealing.
I feel like the joking at the end was more of them trying to shift the tone, like how some people will try and deflect serious moments or deep feelings.
8:49 No you're not wrong at all. Personally, Dracula turning to Johnny with glowing eyes stayed imprinted in my mind since I was a child, it's a very powerful scene, we can all agree it was executed very well
After watching this review, they could have made Mavis that way after she became a mum and then Jhonny changing things up like the 1st installment in the franchise
It’s pronounced Johnny not Jhonny
I saw a scrapped storyboard of the beginning of hotel transilvanya 2 were Mavis and Johnny
Were in Paris for there honeymoon on top of the roof of a building and its just them taking in the moment
Another character whose wisdom and value was taken in a sequel is Mater, in Cars 2 all the things he taught Lightning, as well as the friendship they build, are just flat-out ignored as he becomes an idiot and an annoyance with Mr. Bean luck and almost nothing else on his side. Man, I'm glad they made a return to form with Cars 3.
I think the second movie is not as bad as the other sequels, but yeah. None of them beat the first.
The cinematography in this first Hotel Transylvania is honestly stunning
I hate that they just made him the stereotypical idiot in the later movies.
I stopped watching the franchise after seeing Hotel Transylvania 2, because I was pretty disappointed at how much they dropped Johnny's character in the 2nd film. I LOVE the first film because of Johnny's character, and how his relationship with Dracula develops as they learn more about one another. Johnny is goofy yes but he's also empathetic, worldly, humble, kind, and human. I was really hoping we'd see more of his character be fleshed out in the 2nd movie, some conflict as his son comes into his vampire nature leaving Johnny as the only human and odd one out or something. I think I will stick to just watching the first movie and leaving the characters there instead of watching the others.
In the second half of your point, the 4th movie does do that but in the worst cheesy way possible.
And in the 2nd movie, my gripes is not actually with Johnny but with Mavis. Its like she never had a mother who was brutally murdered by humans and she played it for laughs to impress Johnny's family......for what?
By contrast, Johnny's desire to further stay in the hotel and take Drac's side when it comes to raising Dennis is actually brilliant. It actually plays off that even Johnny himself at times hates what would most consider standard human things or the lot. He's an adventurous happy go lucky laid back traveler and the Hotel allows him to be that, so of course he would cherish it.
In fact, my favorite moment in the 2nd movie is that when he briefly clashes with Mavis as she realizes Johnny also wants Dennis to be raised more like what Drac prefers.
I wish in the 3rd movie though, Drac and Johnny both face their respective yet their intertwined conflicts of being a monster and a human. Its like combine the 3rd and 4th movie but better. Lets say Drac briefly is infatuated with Erika on the vacation trip while Johnny also gets on the trip because he apparently heard a legend or an artifact that can turn a human into a monster or vice versa or something like that of a plot. The others except Mavis get into both of Drac and Johnny's quests here and it just goes from there.
Except Drac doesn't fall in love with Erika but finds peace in letting go of conflict with her family. Johnny then also realizes that it's okay with being a human and like that.
I'll just elaborate further on another comment if anyone is interested.
The thing is, though Johnny did change he kinda had to after marrying Mavis, and having a kid he could no longer travel nothing. I think that would’ve saved the movies is that if they showed the family traveling lake, Johnny took Mavis and Dennis traveling and told about all the things he knew and the places they were going
I’m glad you touched on this, I think this is a very underrated scene
Oh boy, that sponsor looks cool. I hope that isn't a SCAM and isn't actually from a bunch of people from HONG KONG
The first movie was honestly good. The ones after just slowly began to decrease in quality in exchange for slap stick.
Is it weird that I predicted he would make this exact clip into a "the scene that changed" video?
Man I really enjoy this movie. The story is kinda basic but I absolutely love the characters
@@MrInky-xu1eu that's literally my point
Great analysis Dazz! I didn't mind the HT movies overall, but I could definitely see room for improvement and potential, the perfect example being scenes like this one. Never been a fan of Johnny, but I do believe his personality was a bit better in the first movie than it was in the later ones
I actually rly liked 2 & 3
*4 is the movie that really disappointed me*
I wish the 4th movie didn’t make Johnny so obnoxious and stupid when that’s not what he really is-
In the first movie he’s more respectful and actually kinda sweet and even tho he kinda got sidelined in the next two movies he was not bad.
This scene is proof of that- the writers did Johnny so dirty 😭
I could basically come up with other more interesting ways the 4th movie could’ve played out-
I’m sad that Johnny got so reduced in the later films, I didn’t even remember he was a traveler! I think they could have done some cool stuff with that piece of his character!
IMPORTANT: Established Titles is a scam! It is a company based in china with questionable claims to scottish land AT BEST. Please look it up before you decide to buy "land" from them. In general you shouldnt trust any company that claims to sell land in exchange for a royal title.
They also sell plots that aren't legally recognized, and you don't actually own the land. Technically speaking according to Scottish law one cannot be a lord or lady unless they live within the land that they own, BUT you can call yourself whatever you want outside of Scotland. no one would care, save yourself the $49.95 lol
legit just start writing down "lord" or "lady" when you sign documents or papers, it's no different.
I love this movie, I wish they didn't destroy and milk this franchise.
This scene was the 1st time I ever had respect for Sandler.
I also miss retro Johnny.
Honestly, hotel Transylvania 1 is the only one I’ll settle with for the fact the characters aren’t just mindless comic relief nor npc’s filling in fandom service
The first Hotel Transylvania was pretty great. Such a shame the sequels could not live up to it COMBINED
the first movie feels different because it’s more romantic and less comedic, I love the first’s vibes and it teaches children that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside that counts♥️ I love this message
About time someone talked about this scene🙂
If it's possible, I'd definitely recommend you take a look at The Promised Neverland (only the first season, tho). This is an anime, and I haven't seen you review anime before, but this REALLY gives you a feeling of something else. It's for a clever and witty mind, someone who enjoys being at the edge of their seat from just unsettlement and nervousness and is ready to have both their brain and their heart torn apart. On top of just the writing of the plot, it's brilliantly set up along the visuals, sound- and music-composition, characters and world-building. And, my personal favorite aspect of the series; realism. And no, not the typical brutal, gorey and noisy realism of anime. But mere uncertainty of not knowing if the outside has any safe places to land. It's a series I find having quality unlike any other show I've ever seen!
The first movie was amazing. I remember when I was a kid, I watched it and I could not get out of my seat. It was that exciting.
The Hotel Transilvania franchise has fallen down, unfortunately, but the first movie is incredibly underrated and deserves more respect and recognition.
hotel Transylvania 1 was a masterpiece and I will stand by that
I’ve waited months for this review analysis thing.
The thing I realised with this movie is how gothic and almost adult everything is, despite the humour everything is cast in more somber tones (even in the colour palette) with farces Jonny away from the groups. However, as the series progressed everything began to fall into the tropes of “kids are dumb and like dumb humour” rather than what the original movie seemed to portray.
Man, the first film was released a decade ago, Those were the good times
This.. is the earliest I have been to your videos, usually I'm days, weeks, or months late (I binge older videos lmao)
Lmao my first bot, how many can i collect
While I thought the third one was OK (not great, but ok), I actually really liked HT2, and thought it was almost on par with the first one (more or less). But yeah, Hotel Transylvania was one hell of a surprise for me back in the day, and I don't regret being a fan.
For everyone saying they were surprised to see Adam Sandler for his emotion in this scene, I need to point out eight Crazy nights. The scene when the main character opens the letter from his parents, the last part of them he treasured and kept closed because he didn't want to accept the night they died. Gets me to cry every time. I don't actually like the rest of the movie, but that scene is one of his best.
Honestly, I feel like Marshall's story could've also been expanded upon as well; Marshall being the name of the "Suits of Armor".
Where'd he come from, exactly? And how did Dracula manage to escape an angry mob that was able to sneak in through the back to kill Martha?
What I theorize is that Marshall was a knight hired by Dracula (because he's a Count, after all, and had the ability to legally do so), and perhaps even a human that held more honor than the commoners, and who might've also been hired to take care of Mavis while she was still a baby.
Perhaps he was the one holding Mavis when Martha was attacked, thus why Mavis wasn't killed when Martha was attacked. And then, as Dracula ran to her after she screamed, Marshall could've been the one to pass Mavis over to Dracula, and take up arms in a final moment to protect his liege, and cover their escape.
This would, eventually, explain why Marshall is Dracula's choice of "Guardian" for the castle, and why he's a seasoned soldier that speaks in honorifics like "Sir" or "Milord". Could also explain why, after 118 years without getting paid, he still remains loyal to this day.
And before someone says that Dracula could just be using him with his "Possession" powers, if a simple contact lens can block that ability, it should go without saying that being a ghost at that point (as in, completely lacking eyes to even look into) would make him practically immune to it.
But that, of course, is just a theory I had. Sadly though, it seems to be one of those mysteries that are likely never to be explained.
I’m usually not someone who believes in fan theories, but I’m not gonna lie, yours is actually really good and one of the few I can see legit logic behind. It would make sense considering Marshall and the other knights were probably the ONLY ones aside from Dracula that were aware of Johnny’s true identity considering Marshall was in Drac’s room when he was with Johnny and observing the conversation and him trying to get rid of him when he turned into a bat and grabbed onto Johnny to fly him out of the room before Mavis unexpectedly showed up and later on Dracula commanded him to rescue Johnny from Quasimodo and the only ones who weren’t mad at Dracula like the other monsters when Johnny’s disguise was given away. Plus, during the party when Mavis kisses Johnny, it was Marshall that alerted this to Dracula, which meant he also was probably aware of the romantic connection Johnny shared with his master’s daughter.
small detail but ghe proportions of each character (specifically the face) became more exagerated and cartoonish as throughout the sequels, just how the writing became more comedic throughout the series
I never realized how beautiful this scene is
Me coming back knowing established titles is a scam and finding out he was sponsored by them...

Honestly, this scene (and the deleted scene) was my favorite out of the film, because it felt more story driven and interesting, and having a more interesting Johnny than we got now. However Sony (and Gendy) was more focused on doing cartoonish as a highlight, than doing an actual story and film
I don’t care what people say, this movie is not just some kids movie. Sure it was a big part of my childhood. But damn as I grow older and older, I realize how impactful and Emotional this movie is. It’s a movie about life. About growing up. About how some of us have big dreams growing up but never get to live them. We all want to spend every minute like it’s our last and explore the whole world so we don’t regret anything, but we sometimes don’t see that the world we are living in right now is good enough. We often forget that our families and the people we love are right in front of us and won’t be with us forever.
Perhaps the bedroom is meant to look like a funeral to represent that, no matter what Dracula protrays on the outside, his mental state hasn't left that of mourning his wife at her funeral.
I will look forward to see what other Scenes you will cover in the Future.
Here’s my outlook on the series
The first one is the best, no doubt about that
The second one isn’t all that good, but it’s fine
The third one is where it really hit that the series is going downhill and is running out of ideas
“We don’t talk about the fourth one”
Okay, but can we talk about your use of music from Pokemon Colosseum that I finally noticed around 04:30, because that hit my nostalgia button HARD. So does the Zelda music. Great choices.
(Also, great video. I really love the commentary you have on staging and scene direction. Really takes these to another level.)
They're all cute, fun movies that don't take themselves seriously. My favorite is the 3rd one: "Say hi, bob!" "Hi bob!" and its OBVIOUSLY the dog but they're all monsters and they don't notice the kids acting sus. Its very funny to me.
I have to disagree about Johnny, at least in 2 and especially 3. He still gives wisdom and advice to Drac and Mavis, just being a bit dumber. His role is one of the best parts in the 3rd movie, helping Mavis deal with his dad's relationship and stopping a genocide using his DJ knowledge. This whole franchise had potential but ended up some movied confused in quality.
Johnny stayed the same character but as kids humor changed so did the shows.
I feel like an actual connection between drack and Jonny is what is missing in all the other movies, in the first one their dynamic was so fun, and I feel like in the other movies they lost that. In the sequels it feels like drack is constantly forgetting everything he learned about accepting Jonny, and they just keep doing this again and again. Maybe if the other movies were just about Dracula learning more about humans, or maybe some humans could hate monsters and other humans would go out of their way to accept them, that would be so cool to see.
To be fair though, it did make sense for Dracula to be concerned of his grandson’s lack of vampire abilities and possibility of being a full-blooded human considering this was the first time another family member was born into the Dracula family considering Mavis was born in 1895 and with Dracula raising her alone, that meant for over 120 years there were no other descendants in the Dracula family. So a new grandson being born would be a big deal to him that he’d probably want to ensure the vampiric bloodline was still in Dennis even with some mixed generics from both his vampire mother and his human father so that his lineage could still have the vampiric blood when you take the fact of the Dracula bloodline being dormant for over 2 centuries. It is a natural and believable response for someone who’s only family was his daughter and father and no other relatives and no grandchildren, or “vampchildren” as Dracula would prefer, for over 2 centuries.
Well in the second movie it made sense, in the last one (the one were Jonny gets turned into a monster and drac into a human) , not so much, what really made me love the first movie was the unlikely friendship Jonny and Drac had. In the last movie the two are in an adventure together, but it just didn't sit right with me. Still love the first one the most, the other ones somehow fell behind, at least for me. And I have so many questions about Martha
I love how the music playing in the background is from the game journey.. Beautiful!
I still can't believe they named her "Martha" though
Love this movie so much. Never bother watching the sequels as could see the direction they were going from the trailers.
I love you for using the castlevania portrait of ruin ost, you're a king!
I also like the second film for the exploration of what it could mean for Drac to have a human grandkid and Mavis getting to explore a bit.
Anyone else have a specific movie/series/Movie series that is truely mediocre or worse that’s solely good to you because you watch it with a loved one? That’s Hotel Transylvania For me, I know dad doesn’t feel as strongly and he just loves watching all the characters be idiots, but to me it’s important the earliest memory I have with a person in it, is watching Hotel Transylvania with him. My father is an amazing man even if he is annoying and I am so happy he’s in my life.
I say 2 is the most Entertaining of the movies. (hated 3 haven't seen 4) but I understand why many people prefer this one. Also, I DO miss this Johnny in 2 and beyond.
Hehehe, I have been waiting for this one and it’s even about the Scene that I was hoping for you to cover when you would do Hotel Transylvania, though I guess it might’ve not been much of a competition of what Scene could’ve Changed Hotel Transylvania, it’s pretty much my favorite scene of the Movie, while the only reason i would even be interested in the Other Movies is because i would like seeing the Kids.
Hm, though still, does any of the Other Hotel Transylvania Movies have Scenes like that?
Only a month ago but damn this sponsor didn’t age well.
I really think Adam Sandler is a genuinely good actor. He has the chops to make a scene emotional. If he just shed his goofy persona and stopped making ridiculous flicks like, well, Ridiculous 6 he could make it as a dramatic actor. But for some reason producers want to make The Do-Over instead.
I know he got his start on SNL as a comic, but think about it, so did technically Robert Downey Jr.
Also, holy shit! The mother's name was Martha? We missed out on another Batman and Superman spinoff!
Please please please tell me you're going to do paranorman! It's it's 10th anniversary this year and it's an amazing Laika movie with really strong themes.
Honestly, we might've not had the same plot going forward if we had the original Johnny in the sequels
To be fair though, I think Drac being concerned about his grandson’s, or “vampson” as he calls him, lack of vampire abilities does feel natural. I mean, even though he’s accepted humans, he is still concerned about keeping the vampire lineage in the family blood, even with a human as his son-in-law. I mean, even though there are other vampires as we see in Camp Winnepacca, so the species isn’t extinct, his bloodline could end with his grandson if he’s a true-blooded human and not a Dhampir and considering how much of a big legacy the Dracula lineage is, that would be something legitimately concerning. I mean, I’m sure we’ve had the feeling of being the last of a long line of descendants with the last name and being concerned with trying to carry the bloodline so it could continue by either marrying or adopting; even if they’re not of the same family blood, it’s still one attempt many would try to preserve the family lineage. So I don’t think it’s an issue in the second film.
@@hunterolaughlin While I agree with what you say, I'm not referring to Dracula's arc. my point is that the first movie's chill but world-wise Johnny might've changed certain aspects of the later films. I think M1 Johnny would've supported Mavis in showing Dennis the outside world and wouldn't have gone along with Dracs plan so quickly (which was something I REALLY didn't like in the second movie)
I feel there were some opportunities and potential missed with johnny
I don't think that would have been a bad thing
@@mylittlebrony2130 I didn't say it was
@@michaelwalsh9616 and I wasn't implying you did
This is what I really loved about hotel Transylvania I loved it so much and I would watch it multiple times during October. I really liked that we got to see why Dracula acts like this and Johnny to genuinely understand him
Kudos for Paper Mario TTYD tutorial music!
Making a character stupid is such an obnoxious approach to comedy. I get that it's a kids movie, but that doesn't mean you should go for low hanging fruit because "they'll enjoy it either way". I think Johnny got screwed over by the voice, honestly. No disrespect to the VA, but I feel like the "college dude" voice gave future writers the wrong impression of Johnny's character.
I love this scene so much. Thank you for covering it.
I actually wasn't expecting much when I first saw this movie, but was honestly floored by just how good it was.
Sure, it had it's dumb moments, but it was honestly such a heartwarming little story with a surprising amount of depth. Especially considering that, at the end of the day, it *_IS_* another wacky, zanny Adam Sandler Movie, albeit one written by Tartakovsky and involving Vampires . . .
And then there is Mavis, and honestly all that needs be said of her is just how fond the Internet is of her. Extremely. I share their sentiment, even if not quite as . . . enthusiastically as they do.
