Bojack Horseman walked so thousands of these 'Adult Animated Sitcoms' could drunkenly stumble out the gate and fall down an open manhole.
I know! Its a god damn shame! That show is amazing and breaks my heart! My fiance got me started on it, really liked Sarah Lynn. When they killed her off by over dosing he was crushed, not 3 years later my fiance passed away by overdose. It reminds me of our good times and of our bad times. It's crazy how a cartoon of personified animals depiction of life is so raw and so real...

I don't think Bojack horseman is the right show for this example. Sure it's got wacky humour but there's also the obvious dark tones to it as well

There is exactly one good joke in the series, cause I bothered to remember it. When there was a cop in the last episode, they asked how they were gonna get to the aunt. And the cop immediately was like oh her, she was my first arrest. I was really nervous and she helped me through the whole process.

There was a joke that made me cackle. Diane is sitting on the curb and her boss is breaking some bad news to her and says "I'm sorry I can't do anything about it, my hands are tied". And Diane sighs sadly and says "Kinky."

It's almost like the showrunners wanted to make a sincere slice of life/character drama, but Netflix forced them to make it a comedy and this is their revenge for that.

That’s what I was thinking. There are a few interesting ideas for character driven moments, but the show is so focused on being funny in the worst way possible, and it kills the comedy AND the character drama dead.

Yeah totally. A show about a Chicago born party animal trying to move away from their more toxic tendencies due to friends and family suffering unintended consequences of their antics is a great premise for a character based drama.
Oh wait, it exists. It’s called ‘Better Call Saul’ and it’s f*cking amazing.
It sounds like the writers didn't really have faith in their characters and world building and instead used cheap comedy to disguise their insecurities. I kinda hope this one at least gets a second chance, because it still has heart and soul. They just gotta learn that they don't need to be scared that it has the makings of a good cast.
It's funny the divorce, her son, and how she started going to the coffee shop could have definitely been their own funny episodes while introducing and bonding with the characters. Also it's overwhelming to introduce everyone on the first episode. Build some familiarity around the ones you first see as a starting ground/ safe place to work from and build around that
Honestly it makes me wonder if this is their first sitcom or something. if the situation is supposed to be funny too then you wanna pace yourself and introduce why things happen in a funny light over time. Hell if they took the drama angle instead I don't think ppl would complain about watching episodes where these terrible things happen back to back and see the characters get to realize how far down the drain things are going
Or make the job and apartment stick, and then you could do something with the fact that her life has suddenly become hugely unstable, which a) gives you plenty of jokes and b) gives you at least an episode each on divorce, job hunting, and moving house
The "something bad happened to these men" text coming in was a funnier moment than probably any moment in this entire show

Better animated than expected for what it is and no strange, ugly, consistent body part as part of character design, but I still don't like looking at it all that much.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing; it’s like one step above Family Guy’s style, instead of the usual several steps below you get with Netflix adult animated series.
Its kind of weird, like someone putting lots of effort and detail into a stick figure drawing. The animation is smooth and fluid, but instead of putting in the effort to have it really nicely animated, I think it would have been better if the art style was better even if that means sacrificing some of the animation quality.
These adult “comedies” are getting so bad that characters acting like actual people and not caricatures is a big thing.
The biggest laugh I got out of Chicago Party Aunt is I dated a woman who looked EXACTLY like her.

I really appreciate that you mentioned how the characters actually feel like people, the episode about the boss and his sexuality was actually a good episode, I feel like this show could've dropped the comedy label and been pretty damn good
I think instead of party aunt being more of a comedy they could make it more a show about this lady having to learn the way she acts harms her and others and over time she becomes more of a better person and throughout the story they can add some comedic effect.( kinda like bojack horseman)
It's really a shame because "Female Homer Simpson" is a character type I've desperately wanted for a while.

This is probably the "best" show in the "Not Funny" category you've reviewed. I couldn't get past a few episodes to be honest.

This show is kinda funny when thinking about Chicago stereotypes. I will say though the way they drew the buildings is spot on. The Halloween episode when they go to Roscoe's, that's exactly what Roscoe's looks like
16:30 Know what's sad about this? This could have actually been funny if they'd set up the obvious thing, then it doesn't happen. She doesn't cut off his ponytail, he happily pays and leaves, then we hold a few beats and someone says "wow, good thing you didn't cut that guy's ponytail off, huh?" "Yeah, wouldn't THAT be awkward? Like a bad sitcom, or something."
A little self awareness goes a long way.
Or the characters walk past his obviously-fated-to-fail attempt to win back the ex in a later scene. Maybe one of them notices and comments something like "probably should have seen that coming". It's just classic, easy-as-it-gets cheap comedy and they somehow still picked a lower-effort choice. Sad.
3:55 Ngl this could’ve made for a great character arc. Dianne takes _nothing_ that’s happening to her seriously, she’s too laid back and is taking everything as it is without doing anything about it aside from joking about it. As well as being reminded constantly that she’s only living in an apartment and has her job back through sheer luck, developing an inferiority complex. This can affect her relationships, and eventually she grows to care less and less about anything in favor of her irresponsibility and coping mechanism of making jokes. This leads into a spiraling depression, and she goes through a journey to learn about how to manage her coping mechanisms better. As well as learning the importance of having control and responsibility in her life, learning to put off being a party animal when it’s important and deciding to finally take things seriously when things get rough.

tbf bojack was legitimately kinda bad in S1, at least until the last episode. maybe not as bad as this, but if bojack can go from that to being what it became, i'm sure chicago party aunt can redeem itself too, if it tries.
@@JH-ty2cs it wasn’t bad in any sense. I loved season one. The show was just taking its time trying to figure out what it wanted to be, so it wasn’t as solid or emotional as the later seasons
One of my English professors told me about a novel she was publishing: after weeks if not months of re-writing, editing, and jumping through publisher hoops, her advisor recommended that she completely obliterate the first several pages. She felt that they were necessary because they outlined her characters and locations before the story really got started, but the advisor stressed a point you’ve touched on here: this isn’t technical communication, it’s an art of fiction. It’s unfair to the audience (who willingly picked up the story) to assume that they 1. Will not be able to understand or 2. Will not want to build their own concept of the characters based on their conversations and actions alone. Well-written characters don’t need the author to preemptively label and explain their motivations: we just see who they are and decide what that means to us, if anything.

@@wool578 it's because people think bojack is a comedy. I'm pretty sure it was marketed as such, I remember seeing it labelled as a comedy a few times and when I started watching it it was because it was under the comedy page on Netflix.
What disappoints me is that it's not even the worst designed show. The animation is pretty generic for an adult comedy but it's not as ugly as Rick and Morty, Hoops, or Paradise PD, the principle idea behind it could actually work for an adult comedy, and the voice actors are great across the board with some characters that are at least moderately fleshed out compared to the Prince or Hoops. It has potential, it's biggest problem is that the writers just don't know what to do with the script and like most adult comedies of this day and age are making their main character Peter Griffin.

Seeing as this show was based on a Twitter account, it's impressive that it apparently managed to be, like, decent.
That was actually all a marketing gimmick. The Twitter account was started by Netflix
Despite it being unfunny, the rest of the show is fine and the story's kinda catchy. I hope that if this continues ever, it could progressively get better and better. Though there's a low chance it could ever happen and Netflix will treat it like most Adult Animated comedies. We may never know for sure right now.
Though I haven't watched it, it's clear that unlike a lot of other adult animated "comedies", this show has a comprehension of what makes a good basis for a show. The only problem is that the season just didn't have good jokes to carry the experience. But hey, if Paradise PD somehow managed to get 3 seasons, then I have some hope for this show getting renewed.

From the analysis it seems like it could have been a good show if they didn't try to make it a comedy and instead focused on telling stories with these characters. But making an animated Netflix Original that wasn't a "comedy" would have been too Original an idea for Netflix.

Having just binged Moral Orel, Xavier Renegade Angel and Metalocalypse I'm really surprised at the lack of quality animation in modern television. Or creativity. Or originality. Why does everything feel like a sterilized, corporate carbon copy of each other?
this show is like the netflix producers went "hmm, that Eda lady from the owl show sure is popular in the fanbase, let's take her arbitrary traits and make a boring show"
I think this show deserves one other thing: the character design style is slightly more interesting than in most of these types of shows. Most of these shows look like the characters were designed by people who can’t draw and are just doing slight variations on Family Guy’s style. When they deviate from this, it is only to make a character very, very ugly. Diane is one of the few protagonist I’ve seen that looks unique without also looking hideous. The general style is still similar to those other shows, but some of these characters look like they were designed by somebody who was allowed to use their sense of style and creativity for once.
I personally hated when Diane found out her boss was gay and outed him to his conservative mom. She acts like the victim when he gets understandably upset.
She ruined his relationship with his mom and gives a half-assed apology, which he accepts for some reason.
She has a gay nephew for god's sake, she should know it's dangerous and rude (and also not her place) to out someone!
He doesn't forgive her. Which I understand why, if someone outed me to my family (who will never know I'm bi) I'd be furious. He kind of just tolerates her.

@@TheOneArmedViolinist It’s a cartoon, yes, but it’s also a situation that can (and does) happen in real life. Mice cannot talk in real life. Your comparison is as bad as this show’s jokes, and I really hope you don’t need me to explain why.
I think depending on the joke, a lot of the "I say this, then the opposite thing happens" can be made a lot funnier simply by expanding the time between the two halves. Of course it not as simple as just filling it in with 10 minutes of silence then delivering the final half, but I think these kinds of jokes can be funny, just not when the opposite thing happens directly after. Also it helps if it isn't the only type of joke being used.
Essentially, you can use those lines as set up for later reveals, "set up / pay off" style. Timing the gap between can elevate the humor, because the events in the gap take your attention away from the set up to allow the payoff to subvert expectations.
But in all the examples in this video (and the other examples in other contemporary adult comedy animation), the 'payoff' happens nearly immediately, and the most common thing inside the small gap is just silence that helps an audience better anticipate the 'payoff' (when the gap is supposed to make the audience worse at anticipating it)
EDIT: interestingly, I think shortening the gap into the negatives could also work. Take the line example in this video. Character A starts explaining that there is never a line, and while they go into detail about that, both characters stop in place at the end of the line. Then the reveal to character A happens after their explanation. Audiences might focus on the words and not immediately notice they've stopped, and also might not immediately notice they've stopped at the beginning of a waiting line (depending on how the shot is framed)
Honestly the show is funnier when it’s focusing on Daniel trying to be an adult and his cousin trying to please his girlfriend (who came out of nowhere at the end of the season) and her parents. Those two should be the main characters while the mothers and dads be the side characters who pop in to interfere with their goal of the episode.
I feel like you should review Inside Job. It feels the same sort of genre of adult cartoons that you've done a lot of reviews but it has a lot more meat on its bones and I'm sure a critique of a show that has more positive traits would feel different while still comparing it to worse shows

I was really surprised when I watched that one and it was actually kinds good and fun. Still suffering from most of the problems this genre has and at some points obnoxious, but fun.

At least Netflix can have some good cartoons too. Inside Job was, as to be expected with many of the same people behind Gravity Falls, a bunch of fun.

I'm really cautious when it comes to new shows and stuff, and I usually need other people to tell me it's good, or familiar creators, for me to even consider checking any out. You just helped me in that regard. I'll give Inside Job a look.

At least in the west it seems so, aside from some exceptions such as a few independent projects taking off like Helluva Boss most of the good shows currently are all made by a often closely linked set of pre established creators.
Flapjack definitely was a central landmark as it had such a large number of future big names on it, as it was an earlier series that had people like P.Ward and A.Hirsh working on the same project.
Over on the East however from what I've heard there's a bit more variety as well as also having a group of reliable go tos.
Also Q force turned out to be a very ok show
I actually like watching this animation. The character designs are like… Pleasant. It’s very much an “adult animation” style but not in an ugly way. I am unreasonably happy about this.
The backgrounds are NICE! There’s actual lighting sometimes! The bar is on the FLOOR!

I liked the story about how and why she’s in the coffee shop because it’s a place someone like her would never go, a fancy healthy juice place, but putting her out of her comfort zone adds to it
You forgot the trait “funny accent” as Dianne has an exaggerated Chicago accent relative to the other characters. Of course the whole concept of a “funny accent” is relative as well.
7:27 the absolute whiplash I felt when I heard this character's voice for the first time and realized it's Ru Paul??? It'd be nice if shows started having actual voice actors again instead of depending on random celebrities' shitty performances for name recognition alone.

Ok, my bet is on the "We should beat it" as being the appreciated joke, because it made one corner of my mouth raise very slightly (so I am partial to corny puns, so sue me). Those jokes are from different episodes. I watched them so others don't have to suffer. Daniel laughs at the 9 out of 10 dentists joke and says "see? now that's a good joke." If you were wondering, the dentist joke is in episode 5 and the beet joke is in episode 7.

It was more of a drama to me. Its hard watching her go through her life, but its also kinda heartwarming how she gets by with friends and family.
The "beat it" is the "see now that's a good joke" because I'd assume Daniel is saying that to the blonde woman.
The 9 in 10 dentists one causes the cringe, solely because I think youd assume wed think the cringey joke would be a bad pun. So I'm going with the other one
My thought was the other way around because of the delivery. The dentist is trying to say it confidently and the guy covered in beet powder isn't even confident in his own joke.
I guessed that gay dentists line was the joke, because gay like sex and sex = funny. Just mention anything related to sex and it's funny.

I went to watch both episodes. Those jokes are from different episodes. I made the sacrifice so others might be saved. Daniel laughs at the 9 out of 10 dentists joke and says "see? now that's a good joke." For anyone wondering, the dentist joke is in episode 5 and the beet joke is in episode 7.
Part of the reason why the beet joke isn't funny is probably because it's made by Daniel's father. And dads are only allowed to be cringey, I guess.

Every children cartoon I've seen in my life has more adult and thought out jokes (as in funny to adults, not sexual necessarily lol) than these "adult comedies" lmfao

I think my favourite part of this video is that I realised that putting in big block text, "Something bad happened to these men", after getting me repeatedly with it in your review of "The Prince" is unironically far more funny than the "joke" its pointing out. Getting blindsided by it in this video and hearing that guitar riff again put me into an uncontrollable chortle spasm.
the animation is really charming and appealing and '90s-y to me, the poses and shot composition are small when they need to be and big when the story demands it. honestly i really like it!
What keeps me awake in the shower is knowing that the reason these shows keep getting produced is because there is a large enough audience that's actually watching.
I wonder what life must be like for these people...?
With the ponytail bit I was excited with the quick cut because I thought they'd do something subversive and only tease the loss of the ponytail before shes too distracted to do anything. Only for her to hold the tail up and disappint me.

I personally grew up as a Chicago sports fan living in Texas so I was pretty starved for anything relating to my favorite teams. I personally really like looking at all the background sets with all my favorite teams, but that is about the only value I get out of it.
It's not the time to celebrate any of these teams. The Blackhawks are the most hated franchise in hockey right now for covering up a decade-long sexual assault and blackmailing scandal and just won the draft lottery on top of it, the Bears are owned by one of the most racist families in America who openly admitted to making poor choices in the draft because they didn't want any "darkies" playing quarterback for their team, the Cubs stabbed their own fans in the back by intentionally sabotaging the team the moment the convinced people to buy into their network, and the White Sox are trying to sell their entire franchise and cease to exist so that Nashville TN can get their own team. And the Bulls...I guess are doing okay enough.
The Netflix trailers for these awful shows have become trailers for Jay Exci videos- I see them, and I get hyped for the review rather than the show in question lol

I'm not gonna lie, but I was very much surprised to hear, after watching your video on Paradise PD (and the Brickleberry Part 1) that unlike those shows, this show has characters that are...characters.

I actually dropped it half way through episode one. Kind of impressive how many shows manage to be shit enough in the first few minutes to get dropped immediately
Haven't cared to watch the show yet, but I still have some slight hope that this basis for a story won't be cancelled after one season and will get renewed for another attempt. Lord knows that if Paradise PD somehow managed to get 3 seasons, then the sky's the limit.

03:27 I'm sorry, I can't help but love this joke. I know it's because *I'm* so easily startled - like, jumpscared-by-the-toaster levels of easily startled - the absurdity of her reaction and great delivery just speaks to me lawl. Cause in the immediate aftermath of that split-second where my heart exploded, I do find myself tryna blame my breau for startling me like that. When in reality, he's forced to announce his approach like he's attending his own debutante ball all around the house - and then sometimes *that* startles me.
On that whole personality roulette thing. In these stories I write I decide character traits via this convoluted semi random generator I’ve got in my head. For each set of certain characters I run them in the personality generator, usually getting a select set of few character traits, like “big eater” or “sleepyhead” or “the kooky one”.
Oh yeah these characters are Pokémon who generally don’t talk.
Some traits are indeed chosen like “lol the Buneary is male and hotheaded isn’t that unusual?” or “Lol the Fletchling is G rated horny for her trainer”. But I bet even they are less predictable and stale than most adult cartoon characters lol. When you don’t expand off a set of set character traits you run out of jokes (or story material in general) really quickly.
Honestly despite not laughing once I honestly enjoyed it

Okay, so that parking ticket joke was very predictable in nature, but I actually did laugh at it. The presentation, especially the timing, was actually great.

Lauren Ash, while a perfectly good actress and a competent voice actress, was definitely a miscast for this character.

If I just saw the character design I’d think this was ‘Misadventures of a Pregnant Lady’. Making her 'slim' with a big belly seems an odd choice.
Especially bc her body shape stands out painfully, compared to everyone else's

Alot of women's body types look like that, it's not really shocking to be skinny and still have wide hips and a belly.
@@Jenna-in4br nobody looks like _this_ though. Her proportions are just not right anatomically and since they stand out so bad they aren't right artistically either. It's not terribly egregious, but it still looks wierd.
i haven't seen the whole video yet so i don't know if this was mentioned but i remember netflix promoted this by pretending the whole show was based on a twitter account. the account had actually only started around the time the show was being created yet still had a lot of "funny" tweets (i think it posted several times a day?)

One quick thing, I didn't see anyone mention it but some of the of the jokes are very Chicagoland based. The tall man in the party you thought was just saying random things was supposed to be Scottie Pippen, a famous player from the Chicago Bulls basketball team, who has a big rivalry with Michael Jordan.
I also think that the opening episode was trying to establish Chicago as a character in the show. This is really hard to do however without having a knowledge of Chicago. I think they were banking on people just knowing that a house on Lakeside should instantly triggers the viewer to think ultra wealthy, but the various districts of Chicago haven't really been compartmentalized so that the different portions have immediate connections in the social conscious unlike NY or LA. For an example, when someone in a tv show talks about living on Wall Street or Beverly Hills, we immediately think wealthy snobs. When someone talks about coming from the Bronx or Brooklyn or Compton, you think inner city. Chicago hasn't really been divided like that in media.
As someone from the Chicago area, I found myself nodding my head getting an understanding where the characters were. I can definitely see why someone who wasn't familiar with the culture or city would not really get some of what I thought were the better jokes.
It's not a great show, but I think it has/had potential. It to me feels like a love letter in a way to "old school" Chicago that my dad is part of which I love seeing. Not the most well written letter I've ever seen, but sometimes it generally baseline tolerable. Really such a shame because I think the setting and idea are fun.

actually please dont. if i see too many frames of that show at a time i violently vomit. it isnt funny (neither the show nor the vomiting), it hurts and i wish i could make it stop.
I could be wrong but I think Big Mouth has more fans even if it's a very divisive show. Or maybe that's just because I know one person who likes it.
Yeah I was amazed at how many people liked Big Mouth. I was recommended it by so many friends with similar tastes when it came out and I was just baffled that this was the show that everyone was raving about. I enjoy clever low-brow humor and like Kroll and Mullaney and was disappointed that Big Mouth was something they put effort into.
The only thing I can give Big Mouth is that it introduced me to Changes by Charles Bradley and the monster designs are cool. Too cool for it, really.
I haven't even been able to watch it to know if I don't like it or not because the animation just makes me feel so unwell to look at that I never tried. I was so surprised to find out people actually like it because it just seems... Gross.
I put this on for three minutes last night and sat there dumbfounded, absolutely in awe this was a genuine show someone put effort into writing, producing, and releasing. Very impressed you could watch it longer than that
So they cancelled Inside Job for not accumulating enough viewership as fast a squid game or stranger things but they green lite an entire second season for this show

impossible. name a single adult animated show that is unfunny. its literally the pinnacle of comedy every time its executed. like blackberry and tacoma f.d and scoops and The Prints, the adult animated comedy about a funny haha forensic investigator
