SKX Replacement Watch Revealed & My Seiko 5 Relaunch Reaction: GIAJ#10

  • As everyone who tunes in to the Urban Gentry regularly knows, the now discontinued iconic Seiko SKX is my favorite dive watch. Naturally, I had to do a quick episode of Gentry In A Jiffy (GIAJ) to share my first impressions of the rumored replacement of the SKX007, SKX009 and even the SKX011!
    But this is no ordinary release, as it coincides with a 2019 rebranding of the entire historic Seiko 5 line of affordable watches. Why are Seiko doing this? What’s changed, and what has stayed the same? What do I like and dislike about them so far? In this video I am joined by the right dishonorable Hugo Mountbatten for a first look at this new era for the Seiko 5 and what it means for the brand and watch enthusiast community.

      @UCr4aUXslStRRlgxRGjp3Eew people will still want the classic skx for that water resistance, thats gonna raise the price on those right there. All the same, there's already dozens of desk divers in the seiko 5 line-up. I have one with a 4r36. I don't understand why they sacrificed the water resistance for it.

      No, that was also one of my first thoughts. Especially when TheUrbanGentry mentioned the "shield-like-character" of the logo! :)
      The new logo seems to me a bit fancier for the targeted younger audience... I like the classic one better. And I don't think there can be a real replacement for the SKX...Even if they would replace the movement with hacking and so on. The "new SKX" would lose the characteristics, that made the original SKX special... You can't replace an original! :)

    Part of the allure when I bought my first SKX was that it was a professional rated diver. Even though it never saw the water it's just nice to have that pop of red that says "Diver's 200M", and knowing that it's built to true professional standards. It kills the magic a little bit for me and I'm curious how that'll affect their sales on this new line.

    • @THX-C
      @THX-C Před 4 lety +5

      disastrix47 Agreed. It would be a shame to lose that combination of affordable professional diver. The only thing I wanted them to do was put in the balance rather than counter-balance position. That and make it hackable.

    • @chrishunter9784
      @chrishunter9784 Před 4 lety +10

      These are Seiko 5's broken up into niche segments. A dive watch is a dive watch. They have taken the iconic look of the SKX and use it for the Seiko 5 level now. These clearly aren't divers as Seiko 5's have never been. The iconic look lives on instead of being killed off completely, and I for one appreciate that.

      Roger Dottin “diver watches” have been a style of watch for many years now. A lot of manufacturers like Casio make diver style watches that are only certifed to 100m or less.
      It’s like being pissed that a pilot watch doesn’t have an altimeter. It’s become a style of watch, not a lot of people actually use specific type of watches for specific jobs. Divers don’t wear watches, they wear diving computers. Pilots don’t wear pilot watches, they have their instrument panel.

      I'm not! 😂 I take my old skx013 on every dive, and I dive for a living. But if I was buying now I would hardly be stuck for choices from Seiko, Citizen, or Orient to name just 3 at this approximate price point. I agree wholeheartedly with you that this relaunch is giving the majority of buyers what they want. That said, I have always felt that part of the legend with the skx, which added to its appeal for whoever was buying it, was that it was a real dive watch that could hang with the big boys. It had a seriousness that belied its accessibility. It was a bona fide tool watch. These new ones lose something with that, but perhaps they make it up in other ways.

    The drilled lugs, hacking and manual wind of the upgraded movement, added to the new colours and its a winner. I wanted am all green diver style for a while and the 5 fitted the bill perfectly. I've owned mine now for 1 month, and it's hardly left my wrist. I even wore it to work erecting a built in robe one day. I really do love it, and love the comfort of the SKX style casing. It's a nice move but it makes me want the SKX even more now. I might have to bite the bullet. To have an affordable watch with the ISO stamp IS AWESOME. If there is a hidden trend these days, it would be to have a "style" like design, but not the functional side of things. Mmm, back to deciding between a K or J SKX :)

    Lets be honest. I have many many dives to my name. And the statement “professional divewatch” is one I want to comment on.
    Not even once in all my dives, did I use a “divewatch” as being sold by all the famous watchbrands.
    Basically, the main feature you need in a divewatch is a depthsensor (i.e. pressure sensor). And not one of the famous watchbrands has a depthsensor. My main divewatch is a Suunto Vytec. More a divecomputer than a divewatch.
    My mechanical divewatches in my watch collection I would NEVER EVER use for a dive. Especially not for diving in salt water.

    The esthetics are spot on. However, I still think they should have included a threaded crown and bump up the water resistance. On the other hand, it would be a perfect every day desk diver. Hopefully it will bring a fresh batch of enthusiasts into the hobby.

    I think since Seiko are the watch modders favourite blank canvas, Seiko are returning the compliment with these watches. They reflect a many of the current trends in watch customisation and demonstrate that Seiko are keen observers of what goes on with their timepieces once they've left the factory. This trend for following the back street heroes of watch modding is precisely what the Japanese motorcycle industry started doing in the early 00's, with the advent of the so called 'factory customs'. The adoption of fashion cues from the bikes that were emerging from custom builders workshops and out on the streets. Its a cute marketing ploy and plays right into the the notion of selling more watches to a younger generation. Cool looking watches, right out of the box without having to do all the tricky moves to have the watch looking just how you want it to look.

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze Před 4 lety +3

    Yes, this is officially a Seiko 5 with an SRPD ref code now, not SKX. But, I think you'd be foolish to think this wasn't where the former SKX is now residing moving forward.
    As such, for the SKX line, I still think this is 1 step forward and 3 steps back. Not going to get into the superficial cosmetic options. Yes, you finally get a 4R36 movement. But, you lose 200m WR and consequently the ISO certified rating, no screwdown crown and I believe the lume pip is also removed as most, if not all, Seiko 5's have neither of these lost features. Some say the SKX was always part of the Seiko 5. IDK, don't really care about that... nearly all Seiko 5 specs are unlike the SKX's which were really closer to Prospex watches, imho.
    I know these will sell either way and almost nobody uses these for any serious diving purposes. But, that is beside my point. What once was a legitimate tool watch for divers has now been downgraded mostly spec-wise. It's ashamed since the SKX's lineage can really trace its way back through many iterations and the famous 6105. I mean that's a long fairly well-known line of watches which many would consider serious and reliable dive watches for decades. Now, it is not.
    I mean look at all the advert pics and none of them are remotely in or near a body of water, nor share any sort of dive heritage, where the former SKX should naturally belong within.
    And, in typical Seiko fashion, they either give you something you wanted for a while (such as hacking & hand-winding movement + new colors) and take things away and charge you more for it. Or, they might give you everything you probably wanted (the 62mas and 6105 reissues for somewhat recent starters) but will make the big leap and charge you an arm and leg for it.
    Don't get me completely wrong. I think Seiko 5's are great. There are a lot of really cool ones. And, these new "SKX-like" Seiko 5's will make fairly good entry-level watches for Seiko, not necessarily entry-level dive watches anymore, however. And, probably a great starting platform for mods also.
    But, I still think the spirit and more professionally spec'd SKX prior to these watches has taken a negative hit. Personally, I felt it may have been more logical to upgrade and rightfully elevate the SKX status officially into the Prospex line instead of Seiko 5. I mean people saying the Prospex is too large already aren't entirely correct. I mean there are probably even way more Seiko 5 models than many know about.
