SKX Replacement Watch Revealed & My Seiko 5 Relaunch Reaction: GIAJ#10

- As everyone who tunes in to the Urban Gentry regularly knows, the now discontinued iconic Seiko SKX is my favorite dive watch. Naturally, I had to do a quick episode of Gentry In A Jiffy (GIAJ) to share my first impressions of the rumored replacement of the SKX007, SKX009 and even the SKX011!
But this is no ordinary release, as it coincides with a 2019 rebranding of the entire historic Seiko 5 line of affordable watches. Why are Seiko doing this? What’s changed, and what has stayed the same? What do I like and dislike about them so far? In this video I am joined by the right dishonorable Hugo Mountbatten for a first look at this new era for the Seiko 5 and what it means for the brand and watch enthusiast community.

You had one job seiko. Put the 4r36 in the classic skx. What do they do? Raise the price, and lower the water resistance. 🤦♂️
I know right!?
You had one job Seiko! One job!
@UCr4aUXslStRRlgxRGjp3Eew people will still want the classic skx for that water resistance, thats gonna raise the price on those right there. All the same, there's already dozens of desk divers in the seiko 5 line-up. I have one with a 4r36. I don't understand why they sacrificed the water resistance for it.
No pip on the bezel😐😬😱
@@Mnb506 Is the grey market the reason why there are issues with the QC? When I look at them in the retail store, they are pretty good...
Finally someone's talking about this without losing there mind. well done
The green dial seiko 5 is gorgeous👌⌚
And that, my friends, is why Tristano will always be valuable to the watch community.
Such a respectful, laid back analysis. Thank you.
Tristano?
Tristano???
@@Kydos37 It's his name !
Am I the only one who thinks that the new Seiko 5 logo looks like the Superman logo?
YESSSSSSS!
Wow, now you mention it! LOL
Thank you Sal,
Best regard,
TGV
Yes, it's a Superman logo tilted left at 45 degrees.
I agree. I don't like the new logo. I am a watch newbie and I only want to collect the old 5's.
No, that was also one of my first thoughts. Especially when TheUrbanGentry mentioned the "shield-like-character" of the logo! :)
The new logo seems to me a bit fancier for the targeted younger audience... I like the classic one better. And I don't think there can be a real replacement for the SKX...Even if they would replace the movement with hacking and so on. The "new SKX" would lose the characteristics, that made the original SKX special... You can't replace an original! :)
Totally agree!
It looks like the REAL SKX replacement is the Islander from Long Island Watch. Incredible!!!!
Love the mesh bracelet and the black bezel version! Excellent Jiffy show T! Best Regards, Stuart
Part of the allure when I bought my first SKX was that it was a professional rated diver. Even though it never saw the water it's just nice to have that pop of red that says "Diver's 200M", and knowing that it's built to true professional standards. It kills the magic a little bit for me and I'm curious how that'll affect their sales on this new line.
disastrix47 Agreed. It would be a shame to lose that combination of affordable professional diver. The only thing I wanted them to do was put in the balance rather than counter-balance position. That and make it hackable.
These are Seiko 5's broken up into niche segments. A dive watch is a dive watch. They have taken the iconic look of the SKX and use it for the Seiko 5 level now. These clearly aren't divers as Seiko 5's have never been. The iconic look lives on instead of being killed off completely, and I for one appreciate that.
this isn't a divers watch
Roger Dottin “diver watches” have been a style of watch for many years now. A lot of manufacturers like Casio make diver style watches that are only certifed to 100m or less.
It’s like being pissed that a pilot watch doesn’t have an altimeter. It’s become a style of watch, not a lot of people actually use specific type of watches for specific jobs. Divers don’t wear watches, they wear diving computers. Pilots don’t wear pilot watches, they have their instrument panel.
It's aimed towards young people. Most of them will not care. (Young person here). I'll stick to my SKX.
I hope they'll make 38mm that is similar to SKX013. I love what they did with "5". Never liked "5" shield in Seiko 5.
Sickbrain agreed
I, on the other hand, find this new shield rather gross. I mean, can hardly call it a '5', now that it DOESN'T HAVE A FRIGGIN' '5' on it, now can we?
@@varanid9 It's a clever ambigram, actually. From the right side up, it looks like an S (for sports). Turn it upside down, and you get your 5. Also, this logo is for Seiko 5 Sports; the classic Seiko 5 logo will remain for the classic models.
Also the outer edges of the 5 has 5 Corners. i like that detail.
nope this is seiko 5 sports i guess that looks like the SKX ...or should i say SKX homage
Hugo gets me every time😂😂
He deserves his own channel!
Yet another amazing video
Mr. TGV
God bless you and your loved ones !
Appreciate the update and your thoughts- the new line looks great, can’t wait for your reviews. Cheers
Never thought I’d see hugo singing along to firestarter 🤣
We are spoiled for choice now, instead of choosing between black bezel or pepsi bezel there are 27 actual options.
Yes it's a desk diver now, *but so are all of you*.
100m WR is more than enough for anyone who doesnt wear scuba gear.
I'm not! 😂 I take my old skx013 on every dive, and I dive for a living. But if I was buying now I would hardly be stuck for choices from Seiko, Citizen, or Orient to name just 3 at this approximate price point. I agree wholeheartedly with you that this relaunch is giving the majority of buyers what they want. That said, I have always felt that part of the legend with the skx, which added to its appeal for whoever was buying it, was that it was a real dive watch that could hang with the big boys. It had a seriousness that belied its accessibility. It was a bona fide tool watch. These new ones lose something with that, but perhaps they make it up in other ways.
Tbh if I'm 10m under water I'm probably a floating carcuss.
Real talk! The comment I was looking for
i'm happy about the different looks and the movement. the new logo is also refreshing. great video as always, greetings from germany!
Great piece - even the special guest!
I've been slow to come around (after the drama of the past) but you have responded with greater content that continues to impress and inform a broader audience. Thanks for that.
Anyways, I just wanted to add that I read a few days ago in HUDINKEE or Watchtime daily that the replacement is actually the m
Mini Turtle. I was suprised, because of all the limited additions, but it looks like that allows Seiko to separates the lineage from the Seiko 5. In the end, I'm sad to see the SKX era and, but Seiko will always suprise. Cheers!
Never an SKX replacement.
There is only SKX.
Only one.
👏👏👏
This.
Yeah and it's overrated
Wrong.

"This is skx in aesthetic, not in performance" Spot on TGV. I'm all about aesthetic as I never go underwater :) Waiting to see how much these sell for and the quality before passing judgement! Is this the "real" replacement, who knows - maybe we get something in the Prospex line next.
Thanks for the nice update video. I like the new Seiko release, so just put on hold my latest purchase until the new line comes out next month.
Thanks for the insight into the new icon still resembling a shield so it ties into the original. Totally missed that! Very cool 🙂
Love the suits line black with patina markers, mesh wrist band that one is for me!!!
My mind is made up, I will never sell my 009. Great video again mate
I've been wearing my new Seiko SKX 007 for about a month now. Thanks to you and Long Island Watch. I love it.
Hugo is hilarious, I love his little bits in every video! The ambient jungle background noise is a nice touch haha
I like them and I think this is a clever move from Seiko...if they end up being sold at the right price, because $285 is way too salty when compared to the superb dive watches Orient are putting out for less money.
Well said Peter, thank you.
I would put money on it that why will go for less than $200 deffo IMO.
Best regards,
TGV
If there is many people go out buy orient. They still make money. And might raise price soon too. Don't forget they owned orient
Very pleased with my Orient and Seiko watches.
Orient Ray II was my first ever automatic watch that I got earlier this year and I haven’t timed it but I never have to adjust the time, it’s such a nice piece. Just ordered a Seiko 5 (37mm silver dial) for £110 so pretty happy with that. Saving for a Rolex now.
Peter Shallis my Orient is one of my favorite watches. Fits and feels great
Good video TGV. I personally loved the line up. It will save the effort of modifying a SKX.
Thanks for taking the time to share this information. I'm definitely looking forward to the release of this line. BTW - That's an interesting look at 11:43 :)))
This channel in getting me into watch game! Just started to gather my watch collection:)
Lol Hugo “I’ve bugered this up!” 😆
Definitely buying this when it releases ! Going to be my first “diver watch“ I ever owned. Like the fact it’s finally manual wind and hackable. Don’t mind the fact the water resistance dropped a bit since I’m never going to use it for that purpose , just need it to be water proof. Can’t wait !😍
Congratulations. You are exactly who they want as a customer. Somebody who doesn't understand that a diver must be a diver.
@@FT4Freedom you don't get it, it's a "dive style" watch not a diver
I own one of these and love it. It's not a dive watch though.
Great video! Your reviews are awesome, thanks for doing them!
Ótimo trabalho TGV. Sempre trazendo novidades para seus inscritos. Estou ansioso para ver as análises desses lindos relógios.
Superman! Everyone’s worrying about the new seiko 5 path. But this is just sports. Don’t forget there’s seiko 5 dress watches etc etc
Wish there wax a 38mm! Hugo cracks me up! You crack me up!🤣
A very impressive review of a great brand that plays a huge part in the enjoyment of horological pursuits . Well done and keep up the good work
As always good thoughts ! My fav. Dive watch for the last 11 months is the Bill Yao Paradive gen. 3 . Great video !!
hahah Hugo doing Karaoke is something I never thought I'd see...
That intro is pure class.
You see this is what made me fall in love with watches. The Hugo banter the watches for the simple man. I laughed so hard at the Hugo voice. I love that dinosaur.
The drilled lugs, hacking and manual wind of the upgraded movement, added to the new colours and its a winner. I wanted am all green diver style for a while and the 5 fitted the bill perfectly. I've owned mine now for 1 month, and it's hardly left my wrist. I even wore it to work erecting a built in robe one day. I really do love it, and love the comfort of the SKX style casing. Even though, it's heavy and a decent size, although wears smaller, it is very comfortable and I like the bracelet. It's keeping great time, with no noticeable loss or gains. I'm very happy 😁
It's a nice move but it makes me want the SKX even more now. I might have to bite the bullet. To have an affordable watch with the ISO stamp IS AWESOME. If there is a hidden trend these days, it would be to have a "style" like design, but not the functional side of things. Mmm, back to deciding between a K or J SKX :)
I would of liked to see a version without a date window. I feel like Seiko constantly tries to impress with more but I'd like something that can make a statement with less... at least as an option :)
I think having variety is definitely a good way to go, but would prefer it if they do not replace the skx. Having both would be great imo
Glad you made a video about this watch. I got a news item about this range but on googling to find out a bit more, I really couldn't find much. Glad to see it's a reality. Very much like the skx, glad to hear you say that too. I'm not going mad after all. Hope you are well. Take care 👍
Good job as always TGV!!! I hope they are as good in reality as the legendary SKX
Lets be honest. I have many many dives to my name. And the statement “professional divewatch” is one I want to comment on.
Not even once in all my dives, did I use a “divewatch” as being sold by all the famous watchbrands.
Basically, the main feature you need in a divewatch is a depthsensor (i.e. pressure sensor). And not one of the famous watchbrands has a depthsensor. My main divewatch is a Suunto Vytec. More a divecomputer than a divewatch.
My mechanical divewatches in my watch collection I would NEVER EVER use for a dive. Especially not for diving in salt water.
Agree. I do use a dive watch to dive (skx013), but only because my dive computer doesn't display seconds and I need to time stuff. As a tool for actually diving dive watches went out with the ark.
Completely agree with you.As a former diver and spearhunter i always used my trusty Citizen Promaster Aqualand for the sea dives and a Suunto D2 for the swimming pool training sessions.Real dive watches are true instruments,"diver style watches can be functional but mostly are for show.
Most people that complain about the water resistance are probably takinh of their 600m WR watch before washing their hands 😂 I used my old 5s in water a lot, not diving but works great for swimming, showering and stuff like that. I haven't had a problem for years. And those have 30m WR. And yes real divers don't use traditional dive watches. I don't get why people still think that
Agree with your comment, however, Oris makes the mechanical "Depth Gauge" reference that does indicate depth (though I cannot attest to it's accuracy). Cheers!
People do wear them as backup. Dive computers can fail, at least you'd know how long you've been in.
In my opinion they should have kept the tradicional skx design and only upgrade the movement, they should focus on creating new everyday watches with the quality of their sarb Line.. It would be interesting to see a revisited version of the sarb 033! But They still do a great job and seiko offer a lot for a very affordable price! Very good videos by the way! My best regards to you and to Mr Hugo as well.:)
I've only just voiced your HR Geiger print hanging on your wall.awesome. keep up the great work. i owned a SKX009K2 , a lovely Certina powematic 80 COSC chronometer and awaiting my TUDOR Black Bay GMT
The intro is amazing, I love you TGV lol. You make the shitty days so much better. Covid, my pregnant wife is having issues, the VA didn't pay my GI bill stuff for school, etc. You're a hero 😂
I wait and pray everyday for an entire chapter by Hugo reviewing Patek Philippe big complicated watches while listening to Prodigy! ;) Best regards!
The evolution of the SKX is inevitable...whether we like it or not, new models definitely will attract a lot of Seiko fans and I hope the new generations appreciate true horology. Thanks for the video.
Thing is, it's hard to see it as an evolution when the piece is downgraded in almost all departments compared to the SKX--all while raising the price.
Evolution? This is a step backwards... No Improvements have been made here.
@@atticus6572 Agreed. Less watch for same or more money = Downgrade. It's a big NO from me.
Actually, as a 20 yo who has been saving for a 009, I find the Pepsi bezel 5kx a better and more affordable option (at least in my country, you only find skx at +$300). If you add the hacking and handwinding its nothing but good news for me.
Smart move from Seiko always thinking ahead can't wait to get one in my collection, very interesting colors, Thank you my friend for another great episode and Yugo also 🌎🤙👍
Love Hugo 😂 love your videos man! Keep it up!
Dang you Seiko! My wife is going to make me sleep in the dog house for sure now!
Maybe in 10 or 20 yrs we'll get Spring Drive for us common folks. Ha Ha
Still pretty cool. I have been seeing a lot more turtles & tunas. Glad to see more people jumping on board.
Im in love with the blue one , looking forward to september !
Hello Sir TGV, thank you for sharing very interesting style such an iconic watch should have a worthy sucessor with the qualifications of the prospex line. Nonetheless this new Seiko 5 are really nice my favorite is the SRPD73K1 love the font on the automatic! Keep it positive onwards and upwards!
You have to say this is smart business by Seiko- why let other builders/ modders take your potential business?
I'm not distraught that it's not a 'true diver' now, and after seeing the range I would love to own so many of these, so perhaps the marketing department does know what it's doing! Although I am a bit of a tart so the case colour and dial variations appeal.
Look forward to some of your reviews- if possible I'd love a closer look at the textured dial models, and the dark grey/ black cases. Oh, and please clear up whether the 'proper skx' replacement model has a navy dial or black!
Many thanks, take care.
@tgv Can you do a begginers guide video on the inner workings of a watch?
Instantly clicked the like button when Hugo dropped The Prodigy!
Thanks for such a great view of the Seikos. A very enjoyable video. And......I think burgundy becomes you Tristan. :-)
The esthetics are spot on. However, I still think they should have included a threaded crown and bump up the water resistance. On the other hand, it would be a perfect every day desk diver. Hopefully it will bring a fresh batch of enthusiasts into the hobby.
Regards,
Koen
Agreed. The unthreaded crown on even a "diver-style" keeps me from liking these much.
I would love to see the faux patina version in GLORIOUS 38mm! Thanks for the video, TGV! Loved it and your take on it!
Great video as always TGV. Can't wait for an SKX that I can wind. Goodbye Seiko shuffle. 👍
I'm in love with the srpd65... Planning on purchasing soon just waiting a few week to see if I feel the same way. It has everything a beginner like me needs in a quality auto.. thanks for the review
"quality is going to be..... Sufficient" LMAO
Interesting is that Rolex gets more and more jubilee ( gmt, batman.. ) and seiko replacing the jubilee for the oyster ..
Hugo ~TGV => The duo is back - yuhooo!!
Would be really nice to see a newer version SKX013 as well :)
Loving the new (5) logo update and line, especially the suit sub-category. Great that the movement was improved but sucks that it is not an ISO certified dive watch. Nevertheless - I will definitely be picking one up. Great review TGV!
I'm not too impressed with the lower water resistance. Then again, lets see the price when they hit Amazon.
Really? So when did you last dive to past 100m (328ft) and why weren't you wearing a dive computer for safety?
@@17Blower I don't see the point for your sarcasm. My point is all about how much those new Seiko watches will cost compared to more inexpensive watches that have a higher depth rating.
Sports SKX replacement: I come in peace. I have a mission to replace the original SKX.
Original SKX: You are a toy!!!
this is very true
Excellent review. I've just ordered the SRPD51K2! All blue with NATO strap. As I'm not Aquaman, I'm not too worried about 200 metres! Fantastic video....subscribed!
I bought the Seiko srpd53 and I truly love it. Thank you for another great video, keep up the great work. Seiko did good with these new Seiko 5 watches.
I'm about to buy a turtle Pepsi dial PADI.....before its too late !
I just ordered one yesterday lmao
Turtles ain't going nowhere
Yessssss!
If they discontinued the SKX for these it is not a very good idea if they also sell skx it is an awesome idea
Hahahah this is abs brilliant! Made my morning, interesting content indeed as well! Tnx!
That new 5 shield icon is super cool, I really like how they made it.
I would have preferred a sapphire crystal but not necessary, the fail here is the screw down crown. Very disappointing.
Joshua Briggs but it’s a push pull crown not a screw down
@@ritzk79 I think he means " the fail here is the (lack of a ) screw down crown, hence the halved water resistance.
Agreed. The push/pull crown and exhibition case-back are deal killers for me. I’ll keep my SKX’s.
@@exploringhistory5796 you do that BUT make sure you wear it EVERYDAY considering the movement is TERRIBLE. My guess is you have NEVER been diving so dont bore me with that argument, it comes down to aesthetics, a pip and a random 200m, which in all honesty, would hardly be considered diver legit (IF you WERE a REAL diver) the rest is personal opinion.
Danny Fierro. Rather arrogantly opinionated aren’t you dear boy. Don’t be so passive aggressive.
In for 1. Cant have too many SKX ish watches. What color though thats the problem. Collect them all maybe? lol

I think since Seiko are the watch modders favourite blank canvas, Seiko are returning the compliment with these watches. They reflect a many of the current trends in watch customisation and demonstrate that Seiko are keen observers of what goes on with their timepieces once they've left the factory. This trend for following the back street heroes of watch modding is precisely what the Japanese motorcycle industry started doing in the early 00's, with the advent of the so called 'factory customs'. The adoption of fashion cues from the bikes that were emerging from custom builders workshops and out on the streets. Its a cute marketing ploy and plays right into the the notion of selling more watches to a younger generation. Cool looking watches, right out of the box without having to do all the tricky moves to have the watch looking just how you want it to look.
Those Hugo bits were hilarious lol. Thanks for that TGV!
In my humble opinion the Orient Kamasu beats it at more than one level....Depending on it's final pricepoint when it releases.
I knew you'd pop up eventually with regards to this news, fella. The fact of the matter is that the SKX can NEVER be replaced. We must move with the times though and live with what is put in front of us today. Who knows, maybe down the line Seiko will treat us to an SKX anniversary limited edition so it goes out with the bang it deserves!
As I've stated in the UGWC Facebook Groups the SRPD79K1 looks awesome, I've been looking for an all matte black watch for quite some time now and I guess this will fit my needs. And the lume, I've really great expectation to how gorgeous the lume will look on the all-black dial.
They should've created a new Seiko (6 )line of watches??? and place these in around $250!
These seem to cater more to modders???
Just no,Seiko are replacing an icon with a desk diver?
No,that's just wrong
Dean Waller
Exactly,Non iso,No screw Down Crown,No Lume pip on the Bezel, and halved the Depth Rating????
Seiko SKX Replacement my Arse!! But hey it’s got loads of Colours!!!! Seriously!!
We are going to crucify this on the Seiko Citizen Watch Forum😜
Seiko your Going backwards and it’s Money for old rope just like your Reissue Models with the “X” on the Dial which no one Likes!!!
Yup, that is exactly my thinking, I can take or leave manual winding, or hacking. But that ISO rating was what made the SKX unique at its pricepoint. To lose out on that makes it just another desk diver in my eyes, which the market is flooded with, I have worn an SKX013 for years and absolutely love thing thing, these 5s on the other hand barely blip my interest.
Neil Davison yeah, I hate the x on the dial, too! Plus, they look nowhere nearly as good as the SKX in my book!
Exactly!! That's why I ordered 2more original skx007 on straps😍. I want to always have a new Seiko skx007 around for the rest of my life😂 . Price within 10years $600+
@@surfside75 yup, when mines due its 10 year service it'll likely get a 6R movement popped in anyway.
too many options to choose heheheh great review dude ....... :)
Love the polo shirt awesome colour. I'm going to grab one of these Seikos the one with the mash trap but with the all red bezal and face. Seiko store down KnightsBridge centre London can't wait.
Yes, this is officially a Seiko 5 with an SRPD ref code now, not SKX. But, I think you'd be foolish to think this wasn't where the former SKX is now residing moving forward.
As such, for the SKX line, I still think this is 1 step forward and 3 steps back. Not going to get into the superficial cosmetic options. Yes, you finally get a 4R36 movement. But, you lose 200m WR and consequently the ISO certified rating, no screwdown crown and I believe the lume pip is also removed as most, if not all, Seiko 5's have neither of these lost features. Some say the SKX was always part of the Seiko 5. IDK, don't really care about that... nearly all Seiko 5 specs are unlike the SKX's which were really closer to Prospex watches, imho.
I know these will sell either way and almost nobody uses these for any serious diving purposes. But, that is beside my point. What once was a legitimate tool watch for divers has now been downgraded mostly spec-wise. It's ashamed since the SKX's lineage can really trace its way back through many iterations and the famous 6105. I mean that's a long fairly well-known line of watches which many would consider serious and reliable dive watches for decades. Now, it is not.
I mean look at all the advert pics and none of them are remotely in or near a body of water, nor share any sort of dive heritage, where the former SKX should naturally belong within.
And, in typical Seiko fashion, they either give you something you wanted for a while (such as hacking & hand-winding movement + new colors) and take things away and charge you more for it. Or, they might give you everything you probably wanted (the 62mas and 6105 reissues for somewhat recent starters) but will make the big leap and charge you an arm and leg for it.
Don't get me completely wrong. I think Seiko 5's are great. There are a lot of really cool ones. And, these new "SKX-like" Seiko 5's will make fairly good entry-level watches for Seiko, not necessarily entry-level dive watches anymore, however. And, probably a great starting platform for mods also.
But, I still think the spirit and more professionally spec'd SKX prior to these watches has taken a negative hit. Personally, I felt it may have been more logical to upgrade and rightfully elevate the SKX status officially into the Prospex line instead of Seiko 5. I mean people saying the Prospex is too large already aren't entirely correct. I mean there are probably even way more Seiko 5 models than many know about.
The price is a big mistake. I'll never pay 250 and up in a Seiko 5. I don't like the way Seiko is changing
the RRP is less than the SKX RRP. Prices will come down.
The original SKX line also cost somewhere in the $250s retail. The price that most people paid is because of the sheer overproduction and oversaturation of the SKX in the market.
@@tunokiesYeah, standard pricing.

I think it's a great move. 98% of SKX owners don't dive, and the other 2% have the Turtle as an option. You can swim with 10bar!
Seiko seems to be lowering the price and marketing these towards young people, and therefore taking on the fashion brands like DW and MVMT which dominate that demographic. Great stuff.
They turned an iconic watch into a kids play toy. I can not be a part of this.
It's not a good move. It looks like a dive watch on the outside but it's shit in the inside. It's like putting a Toyota car engine into a rolls Royce chassis. It gives an impression that it's something more than its actual capability which is fking pretentious.
@@darrenlee1480 It's got a 4r36 on the inside, and is therefore better than the SKX "in the inside", not "shit" 😄. An ISO certification doesn't automatically make it better.
Intro seriously. Best, D.
