Buying Your First Automatic Watch? Why Seiko 5 Is The Best $100 - $250

  • Today I answer one of the most frequently asked questions on the channel: what should I buy for my first automatic watch? A few years ago I answered this question and recommended the Seiko 5. But in 2020, so much has changed with the Seiko 5 and the only way to see if it was still worthy of being my first choice was to spend a few weeks with their newest release.
    Does the rich history, innovative design, super value for money and vast variety to choose from still apply to these new generations? Or is it game over for my favourite brand at the affordable $100 to $300 price point? Join me today to find out!
    A special thank you to all the good Gentry who submitted photos of their Seiko 5 watches. Onwards and upwards!

    I was about to buy a Seiko 5 - 2020 Why?
    1. Look stunning good, in all the different styles.
    2. Price Vs what you get.
    3. Most of all, it have hand wing, that is way too nice to that price vs my Japan SKX007J model.
    4. I have a SRPC93K1 Prospex Save the Ocean blue.
    But instead of Seiko 5 I spend abit more and got a 2020 King Turtle SRPE05, but if my budget was smaller. No blink, instant buy on a Seiko 5 Vs other brands in that price range.

    My first automatic watch was a seiko 5 sea urchin, previously I had a Casio Edifice but when I held that seiko 5 in hand and then looked at the see thru caseback and saw the automatic movement inside I felt in love with it (I honestly think that's the reason why they make see thru casebacks)
    I hope I can maintain it in good condition to show my kids the reason why their dad has so many watches!

    • @Mister_Phafanapolis
      @Mister_Phafanapolis Před 3 lety +17

      I was/am shocked and, more importantly, _appalled_ at the SKX being recommended when it was of such low specs/materials yet at a comparatively high price. As a relative newcomer to this scene, the SKX was _always_ trash to me compared to Orient or a thousand other options.

    • @dis6wood
      @dis6wood Před 3 lety +14

      Phafanapolis I think so many people prefer the SKX because it is a famous and classic watch and brand that has been featured in pop culture. The same can not be said of orient. I personally have a Ray II because the skx is not worth the money for me

      I picked up a Kamasu a couple months ago and I am very happy with it! The downside with Orient for me though is that they're very difficult to find from authorized dealers (or even second hand!) in Canada, so you end up paying out the nose on import fees when buying across the border

A watch that isnt taking itself overly serious and you do feel that its all about having fun but still having a significant watch both historically and technically and newer ones being pop culture references... now, that’s quite the achievement from Seiko! More seiko 5s!

  • @Antoto96
    @Antoto96 Před 3 lety +38

    I always dig the collaborations that Seiko does with video games and anime because it appeals to a younger audience who doesn't have a need for watches. My generation (Zoomers) grew up in the digital age and watches are much jewelry. I know it's wrong for me to say that but that's how the current generation feels. Now imagine being a big Street Fighter, or a JoJo fan and seeing Seiko collaborate with them to create a watch. I know so many of my friends who have bought those Street Fighter watches. This is great because it gets new faces into horology and some of them will eventually become addicted to watches just like the rest of us. You know my first watch wasn't a 500+ plus watch, nah mine was a $35 Timex I got at a Marshalls. And that's how I got hooked.

    Any way you slice it, and no matter how much you might despise "affordable" watches, here's a truth that endures:
    With a Seiko 5 you can buy a watch that is way better than fashion watches that cost three times the money, and it will last you a lifetime.
    Your favorite Breitling, for all its virtues, cannot match that particular trick.

    There's no question that the SKX is an iconic model, especially in the watch community, but personally I think that the 5KX is even a better deal. The only actual thing you are slightly "losing" is the water resistance but everywhere else you are getting more: applied logo and markers, better hands, nicer dials, better movement with hacking and handwinding and of course a plethora of colors and strap variations. And thanks for another great review, cheers!

Was a necessary purchase because my small selection of quartz watches including 2 Tag Heuer (one I have had for 30 years) had expired batteries and because of the latest COVID lockdown in U.K.🇬🇧 I can’t go to a jewellers to replace the batteries. My first 'real' watch was a Seiko 5 with a green-with-reddish tint dial, back in the late eighties. I'd bought it from a local Chinese watch shop. I distinctly remember that one of the numerals kept letting loose and I had to go back to have it repaired. Of course, a few years later, I upgraded to your Flighty's grandfather, the 7T34-6A00. I still have that one, as well as the current Flighty, a SNXS79, SNKL23, SKX007, a fully modified SNZF17 and the SRPE51. That's just the Seiko part of the collection.

    It is so refreshing to hear a person of your intelligence and class acknowledge that a Seiko is a quality product that the average watch collector can be proud to wear. I used to watch a different CZcamsr, a somewhat psychotic individual, who believes that the only watches worth mentioning are a Patek or a Rolex.I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your channel.

    I have just bought my first "proper" watch. After a lifetime of digital, quartz and battery operated watches I decided this time to opt for something a little more "grown up". I am in my 50s, so it's about time. (No pun intended). After looking around, I decided on a Seiko 5 (Stainless Steel case & bracelet with a blue face and the 7S36(?) Automatic Movement. I ordered it from Amazon on a Thursday, paying £85. It arrived on the Saturday and I am very happy with it. Next time I opened Amazon was on the Monday (4 days after buying it). Amazon opened straight back onto the same page, and the price was slightly different.... £130!! A saving of £45 by a stroke of pure luck! I was clearly meant to have this one, and I'm looking forward to MANY years of happy use. (And you never know, it may even be the start of a collection!!)

    I love your attitude towards snobbery! There’s nothing wrong with it as long as it’s used to dictate one’s own choices rather than to criticise other’s.
    Since my 12 year old refuses to give back the SNZG field watch on a Nick Mankey strap I lent him “to look at the movement” I’m looking to fill the void with an SRPE “DressKX”, and would very much like to see an in-depth look from you.
    Funny thing: when my wife got dressed this morning she praised the fact that it was finally turtle-neck season again!

    There is a New Seiko 5 (57k1) on a delivery truck racing to my door as we speak. I've been in watchfrenzy since Covid and after buying then rejecting three other watches during this, this insanity, the Seiko 5, I think will tick (pun intended) off all the boxes, sophisticated casual with lume.

This is when I discovered The Urban Gentry and thus really started to understand what it means to own a watch and how to appreciate the whole industry. I was at first willing to spend a few hundred on a watch I probably wouldn't have understood but after finding this channel I thought twice about it and am now the owner of 2 seiko 5s and an skx 013. Cheers for the introduction TGV.

    First Automatic Watch?
    I recommend the Orient Kamasu - what a great piece for 250 bones (the only minuses are the hollow ends of the standard watch bracelet and no drilled lugs)
    200m water resistance
    Sapphire crystal
    Day(two languages) and Date
    Screwdown Crown
    Unidirectional Bezel
    Outstanding Lume that even on low charge will last the entire night
    Great colors
    Great finished dial
    (For me) Perfect size
    There are no real downsides and compromises to be made, honestly. What a watch!

    TGV, you nailed it, IMO. While people are complaining about the loss of the SKX, the reality is it was a dated watch and the value proposition was dwindling, especially over the last several years, what with the release of pieces such as the SRP Turtles. Seiko 5 watches are incredibly fun little things and I think Seiko is still crushing it on value with these watches.

  • @ErikSWE

    I got into watches only two months ago but I have to say that one of the biggest turnoffs that kept me from jumping in earlier was that every single recommendation was some sort of Seiko. Same with lists of watches, always a bunch of Seikos with identical movements and slightly different designs. As someone new to all this, Seiko appears to me about as exciting as a Volvo. I'm sure I will come around to them in the future though, there's a reason everyone likes them and once I get it I'll be hooked as well.

    I think this is a very good video, especially for people who just started their watch collecting journey. It breaks the paradigm that watch collecting has to be an expensive hobby (generally there are a lot of videos that point up this fact by Urban Gentry and that is very positive). Generally speaking I think SEIKO 5 is one of the best values that you can get for your money and through its diversity it is soo much fun to wear it. Great video once again 👍

    Something on my mind: SKX used to be the most mainstream affordable automatic diving watch on the market. Since it has been discontinued, and new Seiko with 200m WR became more expensive, title of the most affordable well-known non-quartz diver is shared now between Invicta Pro Diver and Vostok Amphibia. I geniunely love both of these subbrands, but the situation looks a little crazy now.

    Why do people dislike such a well done video? It's informative and gives you a suggestion for a great alternative within the 100 - 250 dollar range of watches. If you don't like it just don't bother disliking, it only does TGV harm and somehow you got here and are watching so chances are you're a subscriber. Hit a like or leave a comment instead.

    Recently bought my dad his first automatic, a Seiko 5, with the big illuminous numerals. Long story short, over a decade ago, he was laid off just a few months shy of receiving a gold watch from his company. Shortly thereafter, they rehired him and he still didn't get the watch for his years of dedicated service. I was irked. While the Seiko 5 is not 10kt gold, I always said to myself, I'll get him a good, reliable watch one day. This was the best I could do during Covid. Thought that counts, right. Any way, the Seiko 5 is a tank, has good heft, keeps time well with a classic look.

    I’m a Seiko fan. My daily watch is a Seiko Premiere Kinetic Perpetual. It’s about twenty years old and gets at least three days a week of wrist time. It’s NEVER needed service of any kind. I’ve flirted with Orient twice but both times I lost interest. I love and own a few luxury brand watches and a few micro brands as well, but my daily ‘go to’ is Seiko. I’m not on fire about the bracelets on the new 5’s, but a quick change to a great strap rectifies that for me. It’s all good.
