So, I finally picked up a '5KX'. Not because I really wanted to, but because I felt that I had to. And it sat, unloved in the box in my house for 6 weeks before I even sized the bracelet - REJECTED! It's not bad, but it's kinda like my stepmum, and I miss my real mum. Cheers, Jody

I really like the direction they took this line. There is a style for everyone. The non screw down crown is a plus for me because screw down crowns are just annoying, 100M is enough for swimming and if you dive you use a proper dive computer.

I think they'd stand up to most divers needs. I used to dive with a 50m Casio and did get it down to 50m at least twice with no issues.

    • @Kevins-Philippine-Retirement
      @Kevins-Philippine-Retirement Před rokem +13

The non screw down crown is the main reason why I bought the 5KX over the SKX. I can quickly and easily set the time while it's on my wrist, not that I have to do that very often as the one I have is just -2sec/day. I have other screw down crown watches including a Rolex Datejust, which is also only rated 100m. I also have a Swatch Irony Scuba 200 Aluminum rated 200m without a screw down crown. As a retired oceanographer I will say this: a properly designed and made O-ring seal is all that's needed for subsea as the greater the pressure the better the seal. The screw down crown is just good security so the crown does not get hooked in something and pulled out while under water. So, the long and the short of it is screw down crowns are highly over emphasized for 200m or even deeper water resistance.

    I LOVE MY SEIKO 5! Why? 👇
    1) bought it on sale at a mom and pop's watch store for $160 with the Seiko warranty. Perfect price for it!
    2) Its not a dive watch. We all know that. Most of the people complaining that it should have been a diver don't even dive. I personally can't swim so I don't care. I'm fine with with 10 bar.
    3) No screw down crown? Who cares! How many watches are out there without a screw down crown? 1000s!! Again, it's not a dive watch.
    4) Great Seiko lum, chapter ring is aligned perfectly on mine, updated automatic movement, exhibition case back, no playback bezel, applied indices, hacking, 40hr reserve, day/date, 10 bar. Does its job. Can't compare that with a random "fashion" watch.
    5) The bracelet isn't great? Most Seikos in this price range have sucky bracelets/straps. I bought the watch and immediately bought and swapped in a new strap at the same watch shop.
    6) Hardlex crystal? Same as the SKX. So I bought a domed shappire at Islander Watches. Same as the SKX so it fits perfectly.
    7) I agree that the SKX should have just been updated. People complained about the SKX as much as they do about the new Seiko 5. Different complaints. No hacking, hardlex crystal, chapter ring, etc., etc. That's why most people mod them. Well, you can mod Seiko 5s too.
    8) Retail price? Yes I will agree it's too high. But if you can get it for sale like I did, I personally recommend it as a nice beater... unless you're Jacques Cousteau.

Finally a comment with some common sense; I don't mean to bash anyones taste or opinions. The SKX is as much a "fashion" watch as the 5KX. Seiko ditched the Diver rating because it was unecessary, instead focused on giving the watch a better finish.
I don't see how that is a bad thing. The price is too high, yes, that I agree. This is a prime example of a great grey market bargain. The SKX is worst value as it's hard to find under 350$ dollars (CAD), and it's got a Jurassic-era movement, unaligned parts and painted pips.
Seiko is also a big corporate business; naturally they will ride their brands popularity.
Wait for sales; I got a cheap. SNK809 with their highway-robbery MSRP of $299 for 84$, official channels and all.

Agree with all your points. Everyone worrying about it not being a true dive seems a but silly. How many people honestly dive? I once accidentally got in the shower with my 50m WR orient watch, and didnt realize until 15 minutes when I got out. It didnt take on any water at all, and it isn't even a 100m like this Seiko 5, so people worrying about water exposure with this watch are being over cautious I believe. Even without a screw down, it still has a gasket that keeps water out. All in all a Divers spec watch is only desirable for the "mental note" that its a true diving abilities

Seiko didn't downgrade anything and the new Seiko 5's aren't "ex-" anything. The "5" after "Seiko" should be a dead giveaway that they are not new SKX's. Seiko 5 has never been an ISO dive watch, that I'm aware of and the SKX was never a Seiko 5. Seiko 5 has copied features of their up-line watches in the past and that is what they are doing here. And doing a pretty good job of it, too.
The new SRPD's wear like the SKX but give the practical benefits of a modern movement, myriad aesthetic choices and drilled lugs. They can be had for under $200usd and that's an attractive price point which will be even more common going forward. Outside of a relative handful of enthusiasts, the new Seiko 5 is a good option for people who don't want to spend $250+ for the privilege of owning a similar watch with an obsolete movement.

I have the Islander and there are a few things about it that leave much to be desired. I had to return the first one I received. The bezel could be turned both ways and was very sticky on both watches I received. The first one had a movement that randomly stopped. The second one had minute and seconds hands that had a lot of play in them. It really makes me question the quality of assembly. The chapter ring and indices are also a bit off on the second watch. The main reason I kept the second one was because it ran accurately out of the box. Bottom line, I went for the islander because of turnaround time, the fully lumed bezel, and the availability of SKX009 colours. If I didn't care about how long the Heimdallr would take to clear customs and liked their choice of colours better, I would have gone with them instead.

95% of the time I agree with your reviews, but I think you are wrong in this one, Jodi. Let's take it from this angle - most people don't scuba dive. And for those who like to think that 200m WR just makes their watch that much sturdier - go and swim for 100m in a pool and imagine you are going deeper as you swim. You're just not ever going to need a watch with that level of WR. And that's where the only imaginable issue with this watch lies. Compare the actual watches - the SKX has a dull blue dial with painted markers, and a cheap-looking aluminium bezel insert - while the 5KX has a gorgeous sunburst dial with a nice matt insert - and an improved movement that has hacking and hand-winding. It's a solid, weighty, sturdy watch that just looks gorgeous. It's not meant to be an upgrade on the SKX, it's a different watch altogether.

Exactly! The SKX had honestly been falling short of the Orient divers for a few years anyway in terms of bang for buck. The lack of hacking and hand winding was just inexcusable, even at the SKX price point. Also, the watch enthusiast is not the target market for the 5 sport. It is the early 20 something who is looking for something trendy and fashionable and not a timeless piece. However, the Seiko 5 Sport will serve as an introduction to horology for those consumers, which is a good thing for the future of the watch market. Yes it sucks that the SKX isn’t available anymore, but Seiko still makes some great watches at slightly more of a premium price. I think we will eventually see the SKX come back, it’s too iconic and timeless to be gone for long, but when we do see it again we all should be ready to pay more.

Value not cheap.. my Blue Ray 2 is a watch I will wear to death, then immediately buy another. It’s a great beater that’s far too good to be a beater.

  • @watchcollectoronabudget8150

I got this from an AD in Downtown Miami for less then 200 usd as a birthday gift from my wife back in 2020. It was my first automatic and opened the food gate to the more expensive ones, and a plethora of bought and sold watches. The one big deception was the spring bar on the clasp did not hold while I tried to save a falling box. I`ve put it on a G10 Perlon nato and I love it. The comfort and weight went significantly down and it made it way more playful. So I love it, but it`s not a blind love. I see the flaws, still I will keep it forever.

I got the ”sea urchin”. Really like black and applied indices. Always looked at the SKX. Was not a fan of the painted indices but liked the case and crown position. Don’t really care about water resistance, if it can handle a quick splash I’m good. Hence I jumped on the SRPD55 and I am thruly enjoyning it. Ticks the boxes for me.

REJECTED!! Seiko is confused. Orient and Citizen aren’t!

Seiko is anything but confused. It's sad for enthusiasts, but they seem to have discovered marketing at Seiko HQ... More changes (price increases) ahead.

Sadly I think Seiko will do the same with their sister brand Orient & mess everything up. This latest Seiko trend has turned me off, I'm now looking at other better alternatives. Seiko SK5! I won't be waisting my money, not even at £150, I'd prefer spending my money on an Invicta Pro Diver, better watch for less money in my opinion. I own the SKX 007 & the Seiko 5s don't come close.

I couldn’t agree with you more! I don’t get this watch! The Brain May special edition especially! Brian May wears a Seiko 7584 and has apparently for the last 40 years or so. You’d think if a living legend wears your watch for 40 years you’d do something special! Really special, I don’t know, off the top of my head a skx style case with a 7c46 movement...

I think Seiko also took the modding market into account with all these new designs. It's like when car companies like Mercedes and BMW started expanding their range of factory alloy wheel options when they realised a lot of people were going after-market.

Hey Jordie, just a thought here. What if you didn't this of this as the replacement of the 5KX but rather as a watch by itself? Now if we compare it to the 5KX, it has a better movement, a display caseback, the same amazing build quality but just lacking a further 200m water resistance.

Basic scuba certification is done at about 9-18m, going below 18m is often considered "going deep", the majority of marine species exist above 18m. Nitrogen narcosis becomes an issue at 30 meters, hypoxic breathing gas is required below 60 meters. If you are going to routinely go below 100m, you are likely going to invest in state-of-the-art not dying instruments, especially a dive computer, that help you navigate your ascent so the gases don't boil your blood.
The 5 is fine for most normal shallow recreational scuba, snorkling, and just wearing daily. I bought one because my phone kept malfunctioning in the west Texas heat and I needed something to collect times on soil samples; they don't have to be super accurate, just consecutive.

I bought a 5kx and love it on the silver bracelet. I love this watch. Easy to set the time and better more accurate movement than the skx. Changing straps is easier too. If you are not a diver, then it is the better watch.

I think Mark at Long Island Watch is laughing and giving people the SKX that Seiko never did. Hats off to him and you Jody for another great video and a great way to get Data into this fine kettle of fish. Thanks, Brian

I was 50/50 recently with the sbdc061 and the ocean crawler core diver, I went with the ocean crawler, it might just have been the best watch I have worn in 20 years and its individually tested and regulated.

Love my 5kX. It’s become my daily as it’s incredibly accurate beating it’s rating and gets more comments then my far more expensive pieces. I have a real diver when needed. This is the ultimate daily.

Yep, just bought the 38mm version to wear as a daily. It ticks all the boxes for me in that regard, and having Seiko on the dial is a nice bonus. I have and love dive watches too, but I don't understand why so many people are obsessed with ISO certification when 99% of them will never need it.
