$200 Watch vs $20,000 Watch - Seiko vs Rolex

  • Today we look at the affordable and available SRPD63 from Seiko and the discontinued and inflated 116610LV from Rolex. There are likely zero people in the world seriously cross shopping these two divers specifically. But I think this is a fun exercise in examining value for money, differences in detail, and the overall watch loving experience from an owners perspective. Are the obvious differences in quality reflected in the large difference in secondary market going rate? You be the judge.

I think at this point, knowing what I know, I would stay away from Rolex. But I can't say that I do not think the Sub is the most iconic watch of the past little while. It is a great, great watch. I owned a few and believe it.
The journey to reach this destination in my collecting involved a lot of Rolexes. Down to one now, a 36mm Datejust, I see the folly in it all. The first SKX I bought made me feel just about how I feel about my current watch. And it held its value, too. But I was compelled to investigate and purchase and sell loads of watches. I did it. Had some good moments. But now I wish I would have used that cash to study a new skill or buy a van and travel North and South America. The more cash I spent the happier I did not get. But when I do things, travel, meet people, learn stuff about the world, I am happier.
Each person has there journey. I am not saying I am right and those who love and buy expensive watches are wrong. Because I have done it. I am saying that in my life, experiences > possesions, humanity > materialism. That's all.

      1. Brand recognition second only to Rolex
      2. Open caseback and a superior movement (except for the 25200 beat rate)
      3. Attainable. Anyone with the money can get one, and often with a bit of a discount.

Of course Bruce knows that, since he bought his at retail (as did I) but that reality is in the past. It's discontinued, so he has to talk about what it would actually take to get one today. We could argue all of the reasons as to why and whether it's worth it or not, but that's simply what it takes to buy one today so that's what is relevant for someone who is comparing these two watches. You can blame it on flippers but there has to be a dumbass who's going to pay that much money for it. I would say blame them. They're the reason flippers exist.

About 7 years ago, I bought my dream car at that time. I enjoyed it, up until the attention, both good and bad, became overwhelming. I was approached by car enthusiast, bringing forth both good vibes and many with ill intent. I was pulled over 3 times in my first week, and not once during those times was I over the speed limit. It was small things like the tint is too dark or the car seems a little too loud (it wasn’t a modified car by any means). I found myself being photographed and popping up on social media on random occasions. I didn’t like nor wanted the exposure, and I knew it was just getting worse. Within 2 years I decided to get rid of it, I didn’t like the attention. At all.
Point being, Rolex is an amazing brand with quality of the highest of caliber. Unfortunately for many, it draws a lot of unwanted attention. Seiko brings good quality without risking unwanted attention. I have had several opportunities to own a sub, the one thing that stops me is attention that comes along with it.
It doesn’t diminish the quality of Rolex, it does however diminish the positive experience I would otherwise have owing a watch and enjoy it as my own.

And I believe it is a statement. I think I would buy one if I felt I had the money. I also rediscovered Seiko. My grandma used to travel to Japan in the 70'ies and brought back watches to me which were of a very high quality compaired at that time. I bought exactly a Seiko 5 Sports the other day because I wanted to have one in my collection and the history of the brand. Hey Bruce. Great vid. Oddly enough, I was deciding between my Sea Dweller 43 and they Green 5kx just this morning. Lol.
Both great watches for what they are. Owning both sides of the spectrum give more of an objective and unbiased look. The extreme price difference isn’t justified... but... there is a LOT more work put into the Rolex. The movement alone, in my opinion, accounts for a few of those thousand. It’s an incredible piece of kit (as they would say across the pond). Free spring balance, Breguet overcoil, chronergy escapement, superlative chronometer.... Robust watchmaking at its best.
That being said, the Seiko is a great watch for the money. It will never be as exactingly put together as the Rolex, as accurate as the Rolex or as prestigious... but it kicks butt.

Worse yet, Imagine getting killed for it. Now the seiko, You can just give it away.. it doesnt matter if you loose it, you can easily afford another. It would have been really interesting to have a score for "value for the money" that in my opinion would be way under 8 for the sub. I love Rolex but their watches should be priced as Omega's +/- 10% to be fair. Very interesting and surprising comparison here. Good job.

A quickie would be to say that the Seiko with a score of 76 and costing around $250 would have a “value for money score at $3/point where the Rolex would be about $217/point…Seiko wins hands down lol

Great video and commentary Bruce. I didn’t understand the hype around Rolex until I picked one up myself. Once I got one, I was smitten by it. All prestige and brand perception aside, they are seriously well made watches. Incredible build quality, classic and timeless design, unmatched durability and versatility, bang on accuracy, great brand heritage and history, and some of the most comfortable watches I’ve ever worn. I know that the brand gets a lot of flack from watch fans/snobs, but I would say don’t be so quick to turn your nose up at this brand and pass judgement until you own a Rolex and see it and enjoy it for the objectively quality watch that it is.

Still we come to that point that this watch still is not worth almost 20000 euros. Of corse it is high quality, but you are paying brand first of all then quality. Dont tell me that it is worth 100 Seiko SRPDs , maybe 15 or 20. I know that you can sell it much more after some years, but this is just because bussines has its own percepcion and view. So what? He is made by Zeus or Thors hammer? I once tries Rolex Oyster and quality of watch is amazing far from cheap watches, but not that much as marketing claims.

Misleading to put the "market price" of the Rolex on the title. It should be retail price for both watches instead. If the tables have turned and the Seiko has a long wait list, demand and hype for it, while Rolex becomes a "Tag Heuer" where it loses 40% of the value once you leave the shop, will the title be "$1000 watch vs $5000 watch"?

  • @Canto00
    @Canto00 Před 3 lety

I personally have a seiko SPB083J1, and I find the thousand dollar mark to be a more respectable comparison to something as good as the Rolex. Skx money really doesn't get you that far (in terms of luxury/quality at least).
Not only are the dial/bezel significantly better looking / functioning, the indices much more pronounced, the case shape and polishing is absolutely magnificent, and the bracelet of a much higher quality with a scratch resistant coating.
You sacrifice on the movement, with a 'puny' 6R it doesn't satisfy the eyes as much as a Rolex with 8t/s or a high beat GS 10t/s movement, but it's very reliable and loses very little time in a week (ime).
You pay 4 times what you pay for an skx but you get 4 times the watch in graspable value and quality in return.
I've also had the lower spectrum of seiko's, an skx, a presage SARY057, and a black samurai. But the mm200 hits the sweet spot for me between affordability and quality.
That sweet spot is different for every individual, but it's an enjoyable journey that leads to a very satisfactory outcome most of the time.
I probably love my watch (nearly) as much as you love your hulk, everytime I glance at it, it gives me great pleasure.

Quartz, automatic chronograph (arguably) , Springdrive, and recently a constant force tourbillon. Seiko has GS, and dont forget Credor. They cater for all price points. Anyway the submariner does look brilliant though , but not 100 times more brilliant. I wish they could be a bit more reasonable though.

Kinda off topic, but it did make me wonder if anyone actually payed $20.000 for a Hulk? There were some asking $30.000 for them, but it's not because they ask that price, that someone is willing to pay it. On Ebay for example you can see the past sales and most were around $15.000. And on chrono24 you can find them quite easily at $16.000. They are being offered quite regularly at $15.000 and even below, but those don't stay online very long...

    My suggested contenders would be:
    - Doxa Sub 200
    - Seiko Prospex SPB143
    - Mido Ocean Star Tribute
    - Longines Hydroconquest
    - Yema Superman Heritage
    - Baltic Aquascaphe

I think the truth is that at a certain point, it goes from paying for quality from the brand to paying for the brand's quality.
The seiko is at a level that you generally pay more for the quality you want.
The rolex is at a level that you pay for the brand, knowing that the quality will be up there with the price.

A better comparison would have been the Skx or Duro vs the Rolex, (I own all 3)...the 5kx in this vid is only a desk-diver with no screw-down crown, bezel lume pip or 200m WR. As a Physician with rather high-end watch collection, the Casio Duro is STILL the very best bang-4-the-buck dive & quintessential tool watch. It's truly an economical budget dive watch treasure. On every scuba adventure, the Duro goes with us, (& has never failed) while the far more pricey mechanical dive watches stay safely at home away from corrosive, salty, deep sea water. Collect whatever you enjoy, the vast majority of investment grade dive watches don't ever get close to the water & are treated like safe-queens. Back when I bought the Duro, the cost was only $25 & yet it's more enjoyable to wear than many other more pricy pieces. Cheers to you all! 🍻🍺🍺🍻🍺🍺
