I’ve owned the King Seiko KSK for two weeks now, and it hasn’t left my wrist. I’m so so impressed with it, the finishing is wonderful, the way it catches the light and the overall quality has won me over. Some commentators have criticised the movement but it runs perfectly fine to me and keeps good time. I’ve tried on plenty of Grand Seikos and actually I’m pleased I spent my money on the KSK instead (and I was lucky enough to find it used for a big discount!). This is a lot of watch for the money…it feels high end, and yet is so discrete and classy.

But it was Grand Seiko that won the battle and continue develop until today. I love this King Seiko because it is an reissue, I love vintage watches. If you were comparing this KS reissue with modern GS, I would get this too because I like vintage. But if you go back in time, vintage GS and KS has similar design really. That said, vintage GS has this kind of case too.

Buying used at a deep discount was the way to go! Congrats on your business savvy, and having the discipline to wait for someone else to throw their hard earned money on msrp, then regret their purchase, while you wait patiently for them to chuck it on the secondary market, then swooping down to retrieve the spoils at real market value. There is definitely a market at £300 to £400 for the Sarb but without Seiko filling it micro brands are . Seiko now is wanting closer to £1000 for a Sarb like watch , and unfortunately there is so much Swiss competition with ETA movements at that price.

It is a design that could be find even in some watches under the Seiko's high-end Credor brand, as well as a relatively obscure, but nevertheless fantastic Swiss-licensed independent movement Soprod a10. After months of taking on extra jobs, saving, and selling various things I don't use anymore, In June I finally went to an AD and purchased my Grand Seiko. While I was there, they happened to have a King Seiko in stock and I tried it on. I fell in love with it! The sharp, angular case and lugs caught the light beautifully and I loved the way it fit on wrist. I ALMOST abandoned buying the more expensive GS right then and there to get "The King." In the end, I went with the GS (and couldn't be happier), but I would venture to say if I had seen this video before hand, I MIGHT have the King Seiko sitting on my wrist right now!

Spent £140 getting it serviced at a very reputable watch place, which took months. Now, five years on, its by far my most accurate watch among other the automatics and manual winds in my collection, and it’s over fifty years old! It’s up against several much newer Seiko models too.

Reliable movement, Zaratsu polishing, great size, thin case, great high end looking dial, great history, date window and decent water resistance. Since you asked, I had a Grand Seiko SBGR031 from 2005 until 2021. It had understated, almost stealth looks and the crown guards made it a sporty 3 hand watch; particularly stealthy as SEIKO and not GS was emblazoned on the dial. The watch grew on me with ownership because of it's quality and craftmanship. In 2021 I could not resist "upgrading" to the SBGR257, which is essentially the same watch, but with a display back and the newer 9S65A movement. It is my favourite watch and I have owned many, vintage and new across most price ranges. It is unique as a sporty 3 hand watch in the Grand Seiko range and IMHO worthy of a review.

That’s a really beautiful Seiko! At that price, it’s approaching GS territory, though.

Coming from a man who only discovered a love of watches a year ago and I lack in a lot of essential knowledge of time pieces but THAT is a beautiful watch and I MUST have it for my collection I am going to wait till Seiko releases another brand of unique restylized watches as I doubt I will find one of these particular watches
So a fun fact I learned about Seiko about a year ago is there watches are better quality then Rolex watches of the same price AND I think (don't quote me) Seiko makes all there own parts

After a glance at the balance wheel assembly, the 6L35 has a beat corrector arm along with gross & fine rate adjustment like an ETA 2894.
But unlike the ETA, they're accessible, not buried under the automatic works. So that's a bonus when regulating.
Just a technical detail that caught my eye.

Good day TGV, indeed, the SJE083 is the King of Seikos :-) The finish and the dial looks marvelous. One little detail I like quite a lot is the Seiko logo (or the font of it) on the buckle! I think printed on a dial this would add vintage character to Seikos more dressier pieces, in the style of a 50s/60s wristwatch. Have a great day!

Another brilliant review. I tried one of these on a couple of months ago in the Seiko Boutique in Melbourne. An utterly stunning, luxurious timepiece. I was committed to buying my ultimate Seiko diver SBDX017 at the time and finally found one in as new condition. Now I’ll be looking for the new King. Even the wooden box is stunning. It will go well with my beautiful 6216-9000 “Baby Grand Seiko.”

Absolutely gorgeous watch, and something my wallet would tighten itself against. Seiko's re-release of its refreshed SPB Alpanist lineup seems to have gone under the radar of most people, especially the SPB243J, 200m WR, screw down crown, 6R35 movement, sapphire crystal, all for around GBP 650, which I would say is the new SARB inheritor, worth checking out.

  • @craigkovach8475

Seiko being the premier marketers they are, it would make total sense that they'll follow up this limited edition luxury market crowd pleaser with a more affordable alternative in the same vein (as you said), to please the SARB fans, and why not?? Excellent review as always TGV. And may I add thanks for staying out of the recent fray in the watch world, which everyone who appreciates your class knew you would (ignore it) - well done and very unsurprising!

Thank you very much for doing this video. Very educational. I vaguely remember seeing this style of Seiko watch back in the 70's but never owned one. I was a teenager and didn't have the money to even consider it. The watch snobs don't talk much about the King Seiko on youtube. The watch is classic. I would say that it is worth the asking price.

Great vid! Loved the history a lot too.
A tip on pronouncing Japanese: pronounce it like in Italian, you will get it more right than trying in English (phonetic differences)
Meiji --> Me-i-ji --> so if you use English words to replace the pronunciation: May-Jee (May the month and jee for Jeez)
