That moment when you find out a 90s car is "classic", you realize how old you have become.
Wish I could like this more than once
Yup. I own a 1998 4runner, and beat out a fox body mustang in a classic car show for how well it's been maintained. Weird whenever I tell people I daily a "classic". It's like that image even for us younger adults is stuck in the 70s and MAYBE 80s
And it shares the same gear lever as the cavalier.
My 90s car is a daily driver. I learned to drive on a 60s car, that's what I consider classic
The black smoke is fine. Its running rich on purpose. The car isn't warmed up so its in open loop not using the O2 sensors. Plus it jumped right into the throttle show...
Definitely right. Drives me nuts when people rev them right up when they start them. It’s too loud for me personally, but to each their own. Looks alright though!! I like em older than that, but you do get a lot of performance for the $$$.
Yeah it’s normal for cars to be smoky when it’s cold.
@@shitloveaduck i think open loop is on wide open throttle only
@@RohanSanjith - that could be. Like I say, I like ‘em older. Still not too worried about the smoke. I have never been a fan of sitting and revving them. I much prefer to hear how they sound when under load. I DO have a burnout pad at my place though. That asphalt get redone about every other year because we tear it up!! Everything I have is more mellow sounding. Maybe not quieter, just not as raspy. My 302 Mustang sounds the best in my opinion. The 67 C10 is really nice, but I have several big block cars and trucks. The big blocks are hard to beat as my tastes go.
Anyways,,,,,,, haha. Roman could smell it was rich right away. Time always lets us know!! Haha.
As a 30+ year dealer technician, I hate seeing people jump in a cold engine car and tach them out in park. Unless there is a fire that you need to get away from...Let it idle and warm up first.
I just bought a 2022 F150 4x4 extended cab with the 3.3 V6 for $1k more than this truck (total msrp was $42k). I’d love to see some Ike tests with all the manufacturers base engines screaming their heads off going up the mountain 😂
Yea that’d be cool, I don’t know if they’ve ever tested the ford 3.3, probably hard for them to get one.
@@masonzimmerman8883 I don’t think they tested the old 3.5 v6 from the previous gen f150 (the non ecoboost one)
That ford v6 would blow up
I’d be interested to see if you could get your hands on Ford and GMs version of this truck and do some comparison testing.
Chevrolet might win the performance test with the Turbo 4, especially the Ike Gauntlet
Come on guys! If you are serious about buying a car with a cash discount, bring the cash… John was super cool.
Inflation is crazy 🤯! I bought a brand new fully loaded 2016 Ram 1500 Longhorn Eco Diesel 4x4 for $46.5k OTD
I know it is a Corvette, but when you guys got in and sat down, seeing that interior threw me back to being in my dad's '02 Camaro SS. That thing was fun. It might have influenced my decision when I grew up and bought my 2009.5 Pontiac G8 GT brand new.
I’m am right there with you Roman when it comes to the rule of buying a car. If the person I buy from I do not like then I won’t buy the car either. The experience it was makes the car buying process the best part other than buying the car.
Just judging the seller is a very unwise way of judging a car. In the past I've bought some really good cars off some very dislikable characters. I've also seen a very "likeable" person who I used to work with sell an awful lot of over priced bad cars to trusting fools. Knowing how to push peoples "feel good buttons" and be "likeable", is how you become a good salesman.
3:22 Andre: "And you guys commented how we paid way too much for this truck." But of course! It's part of the maledom to proclaim about ANY purchase "You paid how much?!? I got mine for X____ less!!" Never fails.
Forget about loading it on the trailer! I would have drove the SOB home and be sparkin' up a few blunts on the way!
I'm surprised he revved it like that immediately after startup
He said he is not afraid to "bark it"!

Yea that made me cringe.
I put a set of air lift 5000 air bags on my Ram 1500 and WOW made it a completely different truck to tow with. Best thing I did to the truck.
Lets you also tow heavier.
BEST MOMENT IN THE VIDEO AT 6:05.
I don't know why, but I was LAUGHING MY A** OFF at the Hula Girl going Nuts on the Dashboard!
Great video, great story, awesome car. Thank you TFL
Just heard what you said at 13:25 about 85 octane and I highly!! recommend watching Engineering Explained video on this subject. Great Video though, and I agree with the people who say way over priced with inflation or not, prices went up 40% in the last 2 years but have not yet fallen very far back down but it will happen.
Man, that small V6 sure is thirsty. It would probably a lot more comfortable and economical to get the same truck with a 3.0 L diesel and an eight speed, but then again it would probably be a $50K truck 😄
No diesel in the Classics. The HEMI and long bed would be the much better truck.
it does have the 8 speed.
You can keep all those dumbass ecodiesels I don't care if it's ram Ford or GM they're all shit yeah they make big power but they go boom boom bye-bye no thank you. And I'm sure somebody's going to respond on how their 85,000 mi truck is still going strong, respond when you're at 385,000 mi
@@asdadasdasd4594 not for reliability. same config 5.7 gets around 15 highway from what i’ve driven
I really enjoyed this episode. Can't wait for the next ones!
Not sure why everybody complains about the controls on these cars. They are easy to use and generally work fine. Comparing them to a new Porche interior (or even one from the same era) is a little unfair considering the price difference. Only issue is the cracking solder joints on the display transistors, but most markets have a stereo shop that specializes in fixing those issues. My guy had the dash out and back in fixed in 45 minutes, we did the heater and stereo ourselves in the driveway, although it took us a couple hours. At least it has knobs and buttons.
I think 90's jdm sports cars are a fare comparison and they had better interior quality. But the C5 is still an awesome car.
I can’t believe you guys snagged my ride!
Iv been working on this guy for 2 months on this car! I live a mile from him, he wouldn’t budge for me! Hahah
I guess we got there at the right time - right before Thanksgiving.
Be careful with the top. Make sure you latch it or you’ll become a member of the flying roof club.
Crazy how many midsize SUV’s have better towing numbers than that truck.
Indeed.
@Defective Degenerate good fleet truck for locating services. You just need a bed you can fill up but not tow anything.
A Toyota Highlander, a CUV, can tow more with two fewer cylinders. It’s probably a lot faster too, especially in Colorado.
I own the same truck with the HEMI and long bed. Rated over 10k pounds. Got it new for 27k out the door in 2018. THAT was a deal. Short bed trucks with V6 and eco gearing make zero sense.
@@asdadasdasd4594 It makes zero sense for your needs. Others have different needs. My Dad has this exact same truck as a 2013 model. We are in NY, and he has a camp at the top of a steep long driveway. He gets 20+ mpg, hauls his SxS, wood, garbage, golf clubs, ground clearance for the camp driveway, 4x4 for the snow, he also uses it as a foremans truck for his welding business. Hauls tools, some materials, gas cans, gas tanks, etc etc.
Another fabulous video thank you. In years to come TFL will be considered up there with Jack Benny and Lucille Ball!
As for the price of the truck vs what people spent on the same truck 2 years ago. I bought a jar of mayonnaise this week and it cost $7.99! EVERYTHING is crazy expensive right now. When you hear of people selling trucks back to the dealership for more than they paid for them a year earlier you know something is wrong.
Never too much Blaze! We all love that dog!
My 2017 pentastar dumped about three quarts of oil in a McDonald's parking lot and left me stranded 100 miles from home. Screw those engines
Brah buying a ram is where you went wrong
@@604h22a ain't no Ram
Congrats on the c5 purchase... Just watched the reveal on the classics channel.
Thank you for watching!
The interior is perfect not a bunch of bs. It's not super fast but it moves. And it's pretty.
As much as I like the idea of a simple, reliable, inexpensive truck - the price just isn't where it needs to be for the Classic. Most people will be better off with a midsize that costs less. Even comparing to the Ram v6 with a 3.55 rear, the Ranger and Colorado provide more towing capacity. You have to step up to the Hemi to get more towing capacity than the midsize trucks provide, and the payload capacity of the older Ram, even with the v8 and a 3.92 is still no better than a Ranger's.
Also, you really should be using sway control and weight distribution at this weight. Lightweight trucks with a short wheelbase are easy to push around. I use a Blue Ox with my 2200# auto hauler, and can swap down to the smallest bars (350#) on the lowest ring to get sway control with an empty trailer, then swap to 750# bars and adjustments to put the front ride height at or slightly below the unladen weight. My DCSB Taco has done great this way, right up to the rated capacity.
A Ram Classic with a Hemi and 3.92 can be rated to tow as much as 10k lbs, there's no Ranger that can safely match that
@@samin90 Hemi w/3.92 + Reg Cab w/6'4" box + 4x4 has 9,000# Towing, 1400# Payload and a base MSRP of
$41,000.
Ranger XL 4x4 SuperCab with 6' Box has 7500# Towing, 1696# Payload and a base MSRP of $33,700.
So while the Classic with a Hemi can tow 1500# more, it's down almost 300# in payload capacity and costs $7,000 more than a Ranger.
With the Ram, I suspect that staying under the GVWR will require being picky about what you put in the truck when you are towing a heavy load.
After years of struggling to keep the truck under the GVWR while towing with a Tacoma, that extra towing capacity has less value to me than either the money or the payload capacity.
And that's the rub. It's presented as a value truck, but it's only a value compared to other outrageously priced full size trucks.
Should have bought the Aluma Tilt-Bed trailer. My son-in-law hauls his C5 Z06 on the tilt bed with no hits on the chin spoiler. Nice purchase!
Very nice vehicle ,fairly bought and sold.
Awesome to see Blaze..what a great dog
Putting! Stubbs to work! Awesome!
Since you guys were maxing out the truck you should have used a weight distribution hitch. Like personally use husky centerline.

I like the truck and love the vett!
Geez part 2?!?!?!
Roman…the song on the radio screen @18:00min is “Let Her Go” by Passenger. It’s a sign not to buy the car 😂🤣. Great video as always
Just back it onto trailer, most of the weights on front end,in the picture it looks like a bass boat trailer with axels 70% towards the rear lol
The C5 was almost 50/50 weight distribution.
Episode 2 is coming tomorrow. We move the car before towing it.
@@shitloveaduck exactly
@@shitloveaduck He was talking about the position of the car on the trailer, not the weight distribution of the Vette. You also have no clue when it comes to loading and pulling a trailer.
@@asdadasdasd4594 - I have been loading and pulling trailers since I was 15. The comment about loading it backwards refers to the assumption the front is heaviest. I have my Class 1 drivers license. I was law enforcement for 30 years and enforced many of the laws regarding proper loading of trailers in our province. You wanna make any more ridiculous assumptions?? Now grow up.
I have a CDL, so I am going to record myself going over the rated limits of the vehicle while towing. Sure glad that you brought the tow chains... LOL 😂

Nice Corvette. Can't wait to see the Ram towing it up the Ike Gauntlet.
Wow! That's a great price with amazing miles! And i hope that was warned up as you guys revved it so high...but nice buy!
hahahahahah that poor 3.6 is crying just loving that single cab alone
The seller revved the shit outta a cold motor just like y’all do ! He’s hired !!!
Here's an interesting test to run with the truck and trailer: fuel grades while towing. Fuel economy, engine/trans temps (since you have an auto), possibly even timing and knock values, would be great data to see. At the very least, run something like the Ike at max load and check economy and transmission shifts.
I know, most people say "you don't need to change fuels when towing." All I can say is, every vehicle I've ever used to tow with, be it the Jeep or one of my cars, has always benefited from going up to the highest octane (usually 93 around here) I can run, especially when at the limit (or over!) capacity. My theory is, towing puts the engine and drivetrain into a higher stressed condition than normal driving, and for longer periods of time. The added octane allows the ECU to run more timing advance than normal, increasing sustained power. Or at the very least, results in LESS retarding due to the increased heat and sustained loads. I know with the Jeep when it's loaded for bear, running 93 after emptying the tank, results in me staying in 6th gear (6spd manual) longer, and also results in fewer downshifts. It's also just peppier in general when taking off. Now again, that's only when towing. I've never butt-dyno noticed a difference betwen 87 and 93 when under normal (non-towing) conditions though.
Agreed, however, towing in OD is a no no either way… want to keep the engine and tranny from being under high load at low rpm.
@@DirtE30 that's one of the reasons all my tow rigs have been manual transmission equipped. 😁
Also, I've always wanted to get clarity from the auto transmission crowd about that. As long as the torque converter is locked up there should be any excessive loading on the transmission. I would think the biggest concern would be an unblocked torque converter and the abuse and heat being stuffed into the fluid. What's a clutch pack is engaged shouldn't be putting any other kind of abuse on the system.
@@johnhufnagel the lockup clutch is taking a huge amount of TQ when locked up in a taller gear. It’s just math. It will start to slip and fail. You’re also right about being unlocked and shearing fluid causing excess heat. Ideally being in the 1:1 ratio gear and in lockup will prevent over loading of the lockup clutch and excessive unlock events.
No reason you need a manual to maintain a given gear, especially with modern trannys and tuning.
@@DirtE30 except that by your description, you're saying that manufacturers are deliberately not putting in a lock-up clutch in the torque converter that can handle the full rated output of the engine.
@@johnhufnagel which is why there are torque limits built into the ECM/TCM logic… 100% factual.
You guys may need an oil catch can to pass emissions in Boulder. Just an fyi for you guys out of State, all of the eastern slope Denver/Boulder counties have emissions. The western slope does not have any.
I've had a C4,C6,C7 loved all of them the C7 wicked
You didn’t bring cash with you? Unprepared again Roman. 🧐🙏☘️
That short wheelbase light pick up needs a hitch that's not 9' from the bumper, gen y hitches stick out too far it gives the trailer way more control over the tow vehicle
Ram regular cab, star of the day
Aluma Trailers, Bancroft, IA. Iowa represent!
4l60e loves the full throttle down shift
Wait... A 4runner can tow more than this? Would the payload be similar then? Or just the axle gearing makes it tow this low?
The tacomas payload is lower. Because of the frame and suspension, not as beefy. And the ram has an eco rear diff. It would tow more like 7500 if properly equipped
I watched this whole video and you didn't load the truck! lol
When towing a trailer with a high load capacity empty I always lower the tire pressures on the trailer.
Much smoother ride.
not much smoother when a tyre overheats and explodes though. and it happens more than people realise
@@petelattimer6808 Never got my tires warm by doing that.
Standard pressure is often for max load and dropping the pressure doesn't heat them up.
You have to remember to fill them when you load the trailer though but if you tow a lot it's no biggie.
@@perpelle more grip and friction equals more heat not a debate that's a fact. Airing those tires down will also do hell for your mpg and tread. If you have to air them down enough like that to feel more stable then you need to reset the load get a different truck or just give those things between your legs a tug.
@@seanbutler2291 Stated tire pressures are at full load on trailer. There's no reason not to lower the pressures when the trailer is empty.
I have never noticed a significant rise in temps nor thread wear.
Lowering pressures with a load is a completely different thing.
Learn your trailer and all is fine.
I chose the automatic in my C6 because I don’t want to have to change a clutch. The diff, transmission and torque tube have to come out to change a clutch and some people are very hard on clutches.
That logic doesn’t work because automatic transmissions don’t last forever and cost way, way more to replace than a clutch.
@@ouch1011 If you say so. I know of people who can destroy a clutch in a matter of a few thousand miles. If an automatic is maintained with fluid changes and not abused, an automatic can last for a very long time. Also, the automatic is in the back of the Corvette. The clutch is in the middle attached to the engine. To replace the clutch, everything behind the engine has to be removed. My 2001 F150 has an automatic and has nearly 200k on it and my 2014 Civic has 160k. Both have their original transmissions in them. By now, even driven very carefully each would have needed at least one clutch. I can drive cars with a clutch and it might have been more fun, but I am happy with my decision.
Did you run the jack up to make the ramps less steep?

I have issues with pickups and suv with headlights so bright they turn the interior of my car the daytime. To me it makes it hard for me to see. Try the headlights on vehicle of the 50 60 and 70. We could drive with those headlamps.
I agree. Right now everyone is just blinding each other.
But is it REALLY a headlamp if you can't see the ass hairs of a racoon from 200 yards away?
It's less the brightness than there being little regulation as to the shape and position of the lights. I thought the 2015 Jeep Cherokee or the 2019 Kia Soul was the way to go but I'm sure people whined about the cars' appearance and the manufacturers moved the headlights.

Look how far back the axles are. Right away I thought they would load car backwards and to the back of the trailer to SOME weight off the tongue. Just an opinion from a 24 year experienced flat bed trucker.
I think these are near 50:50 weight distribution though. So just a little fore-aft adjustment would be all that's needed.
As a flat bed trucker you should know about what it is you are loading. No point killing any aerodynamic advantage by putting the car backward when they are near 50/50 weight distribution. There will be less than 25 lbs difference front to rear. The front is 49.4% of the weight and the rear is 50.6%. The motor sits behind the front axles.
it strikes me as odd that the trailer axles are that far back relative to the trailer in general! usually here theyre about the mid point of the bed/box, not towards the rear of the trailer. the exception being HGV trailers
I guessed right. Nice buy.

Talking about offroading and no auto 4wd, isn't the 44-45 transfer case a better option than the 44-44 for offroading?
Yes, the 44-45 has a true mechanical lock, the 44-44 is clutch based and won't fully lock to allow auto 4WD to work
