The silver bar on the rear quarter of the hearse is called a landau bar. It serves no purpose other than it is a tradition. Hearses are also known as a coach. Back in the days a coach (horse drawn) had a roof that could be taken down like a convertible, the landau bars helped to fold down the collapsed roof. Coaches of that nature were consider for the rich and noble. Thus the Landau bar serves as a sign of nobility and respect for the deceased.

Funeral director here! I own quite a few hearses for our firm as well as for personal use, including one similar to the one in the video. The engine is the 5.7L based off the LT1 used in the C4 Corvettes. These are great year models to have because its just before Cadillac switched to the North Star V8s.

Also the landau bars (large trim on the side) is usually easily removed by unscrewing the large, round knobs on each end. Makes it easier to clean behind them. Not always the case but worth a shot.

Owned a 1974 Cadillac Superior Hearse as a daily driver for many years. Used it mainly because I worked on restoring Pinball machines. and was the best way to haul them save and dry. the bier pins would hold the machine Stabil with out having to tie them down. Loved that car.

That's the key to a nicely stylized landau bar, it's suppose to be a hinge to lower the folding roof....so in this case, the vinyl roof canopy and the bar itself together is to give the impression of the entire roof folding back........clearly it doesn't, but that;s what it's suppose to look like.....

That "symbol" on the back is a Landau bar which you see on Landau tops or roofs. It originally was a decorative metal hinge that allowed you to fold down a leather or cloth top on a car. The circle in the middle and on the two ends would be the pivot points. Clearly this isn't going to retract but that is the origin of the styling cue you are looking at. ...oh and after I write this I see five other people nailed it in an hour - I guess this just adds more proof LOL.

I own a 1995 Cadillac Hearse. As a hot rodder I was looking for a enclosed parts hauler with a nice V8. My search for a panel van, station wagon or a hearse, lead me to the hearse. To quote Dan Akroyd "It's a Cadillac!" Plus it is just so cool!

Was a cool ride and freaked most people out because I always arrived to school early (zero period) which meant i left early too, so for a few months nobody knew who drove it. It was just therr in the morning and gone when everyone got out of school. Blast during Halloween too.

I’ve owned multiple hearses and seeing this I know what struggles are involved especially when they sit out in the elements for so many years. Funeral cars were meant to be garage kept. The makers built these with the intention of them not being left outside. They do leak a lot of water inside and always have a musty and mildew smell to the inside. Pretty sure all that one needs is a fuel pump and a change of fluids and a fresh battery. A nice set of white walls too

The s-shaped bar on the outside of the Hearse you asked about this episode is solely a payback to the 18th century when they used to have hurses that were actually horse carriages! They had a pull down canopy top, and that is to emulate the hinge that was the main support for that canopy top, it has no current meaning to the individual hearse that it's on now, but it's called an S-bar part of the Landau top. There's a little bit of history for you .

Yup a great motor. Good old dexcool, from when I had my Cadillac I always heard to flush it all out if going back to green or green had been added. Not immediate carnage but apparently they don't play well together. I kept the factory spec coolant but flushed to be safe anyway. Since the previous owner once cleared snow with a steel ice shovel I had doubts as to maintenance 😂.

    • @gdi9320

@cardinaloflannagancr8929 the early formula for dexcool was awful for gaskets, then again this is when GM started to cheapen out even further wkth gasket material too. Yes all older GMs should get is flushed out completely. It's a refined formula now. But coolant formulas whether green, red or clear has come a long way from 20+ years ago.

I love your videos!!! Can you do one on how to clean seatbelts? My car is 10 years old and though they don’t have stains on them, I read that a build up of oils and grime is probably what’s keeping them from retracting. I have no idea how to clean them though.

Spray with carpet cleaner, steamer with a brush attachment. Dry with cloth and let air dry the rest of the way. It's very simple

Great job on the front seats! I’m going to guess that the dark ring may have been caused by putting a used oil filter on the seat.

I worked as a used car detailer for the local Chevy/Olds dealer back in the mid 1980's. It's fascinating to see the advances that have been made over the past 40 or so years. All the different equipment, chemicals, and techniques. What I would have given to have been able to do the basic cleanup of the engine bay and interior so seemingly easily. And that dual-action polisher? I want one, just for personal use on my own cars!

Hello guys I love your videos.
I have not only seen a hearse but I’ve driven many of them numerous times.
Back in the 80s I was an EMT on an ambulance for about five years. We also had a removal contract with the city.
Basically we would respond to emergency calls. When we arrived if the person expired and was pronounced dead we would bring our ambulance back to the garage and go back and pick them up with the Removal Car / Hearse and take them where they needed to go, funeral home, or morgue.
We would also get hired by funeral homes and private citizens to pick up the remains and take there where they needed to be.
It was an unusual experience each time.

I own a hearse- a 1971 Cadillac Superior coach hearse that I purchased from my manager who bought it to advertise for Spirit Halloween in my hometown. He used it from 2010 to 2015 (I think) and he abandoned it shortly after. I purchased it this year after having been sitting in a field for years and hauled it out of there. It was completely gutted behind the front bench seat, leaving a floor and frame for the casket deck. Before it was purchased by my manager, it was used in a ski resort to haul passengers up and down the mountain and was fitted with two red bench seats in the middle of the car, and it was given a trunk-like carpeted floor to store gear and equipment. I wish I knew where to find parts to restore it, but it serves as a cool bit of history with a neat story. Thought it'd be appropriate to share the story here.
And to answer your question about the bar above the rear quarters, that's a Landau bar. Served mainly for decoration throughout the years but it came from convertible roofs from funeral coaches of old when they were horse-driven. I also see this one looks like a superior coach judging by the big chrome bar separating the middle doors from the rear section.

I have owned over thirty vehicles in my lifetime, including two hearses. Okay, one was a 1963 Pontiac Bonneville Superior combo hearse, meaning that it had a dual purpose, able to function as both a hearse, and as an ambulance. I have also owned a 1968 Cadillac Fleetwood Miller Meteor hearse, which was my daily driver for several years. It had a 472 V8, and got approximately 9 mpg in the city, and 11 mpg on the highway, yet this was my favorite vehicle ever!!! I had moved to St. Louis with my then girlfriend at the time, and I took both of my hearses with me, and sold my other cars at the time. We lived there for a year, and then moved to my current location. With less than a week left in our apartment lease, my girlfriend (she had moved there a couple of months prior to my arrival) realized that the lease was up a month earlier than what she had thought. With all of the preparation for the move clear across country, I didn't locate a reasonably priced transporter for my vehicles, and was forced to sell them at the last minute. A friend purchased my Cadillac for something ridiculous like $200 or $300, only to find out a few months later that it had been stolen off the street in front of his home. That Cadillac was my favorite vehicle ever, for numerous reasons. I have been meaning to acquire another Cadillac hearse, but just haven't had much time to devote to such a search. Often, these types of vehicles will fall into your lap unexpectedly rather than acquiring that rare find before anybody else does. The little amount of time I have devoted to finding another at a decent, reasonable price, and in good working order, has yielded little results. Most of the time, somebody else beat me to some decent deal I would have purchased if I had the opportunity, or the seller is asking far too much, or at least far too much in my perspective, and won't budge at all on the asking price . . . or the vehicle is simply located too far away from my location, and I will not purchase any used vehicle sight unseen. Additionally, there are more, and more people developing a sincere interest in owning a hearse, so the whole supply and demand relation is more skewed because of more interest, and less availability, or at least less in regards to the older hearses which I have a greater fondness for. The one in this video is a model made somewhere between '93 and '96, which I wouldn't pass up at the right price, but I am drawn more towards the stylings of the older vehicles, pre-1970. I'm guessing it is a 1994 model, am I right?
It's good to see someone actually provide some loving care to these incredibly unique vehicles, rather than just letting them sit somewhere, slowly rotting away!!!
