It looks like the story takes place in gerudo desert since the pillars have pig like guardian statues on them. Since the statues have wings it could be a gerudo skyloft or sacred realm since time is still.

@@SuperZeldaGirlis it just me or does the traveler from the Majora’s Mask Manga look like Link?

  • @MrGeorgeFlorcus
    @MrGeorgeFlorcus Před 2 lety +45

I like that the origin of Majora's Mask, as depicted by this manga, contains within it a lot of subtle allusions to some of the elements of the game:
-The Traveler clearly bears a resemblance to Link, but is definitely a distinct character, much like how there are many versions of Link that all have distinct personalities and vary in appearance.
-The story revolves around a monster, who is treated as both evil, but also is seen as sad, lonely, and sympathetic, much like the Skull Kid.
-The Traveler has the ability to "create time", by playing an instrument, in this case a drum. Link can create time too, with the Song of Time, and in Majora's Mask, one of the instruments he can play is even a drum.
-When the Traveler plays his song, the dance lasts 3 days, just like Majora's Mask takes place over '3' days, albeit 3 infinitely replayable days. At the end of the song, the monster dies, just as Majora dies at the canonical end of the 3 day cycle.
-Thematically, many of the characters in Majora's Mask are dealing with loneliness and death, which are central to this story.
It's very interesting how they manage to tell a wholly original story that feels like it's own thing, doesn't feel like a generic, kid-friendly fantasy backstory, but also ties in very well with the source material thematically. A very interesting story.

I agree much although I'll throw all links are diff because they are all diff heros it would be cool if fierce diety came from an era when Hyrule had no hero and I'm not talking on twilight princess because that came later. I'm saying it'd be cool if diff worlds had their own sort of reflection of 3 goddesses and also if they don't know hylia they do believe in time. I know twilight realm has midna and that termina may not be in lowrule but still do they leave gaps for more possible heros? Some games have major time gaps that and fierce diety could have appeared and left termina and maybe then they have own hero weirdness and then they can make 50 more games

There’s something strange about the story. It seems hopeful in that the monster was put to rest after being trapped so long… BUT you could also interpret the mask as the amalgamation of the unrealized hopes and dreams of the DEAD. Was the traveler trying to save the monster? Or destroy the world? What if the monster would have been happy alone forever? Lots to think about.

  • @error13_genderexpunged
    @error13_genderexpunged Před 2 lety +22

A little self-indulgent and possibly extrapolated theory:
When the monster said it felt all the hopes and dreams of the people inside it, that made me think: that is a spitting similarity to the description of the Fierce Deity mask. Perhaps when the creature died and that hope was released, it formed the fierce deity mask, while the traveler (knowingly or unknowingly) creates Majora's Mask with the darkness that is left over, making the two masks two sides of the same coin. This makes sense in the game as many descriptions, including from majora itself, describe the mask as just as powerful and just as much potential to create catastrophe as Majora's Mask. In Japanese Buddhism, which this game has many references to, one of the most widely known fierce dieties (strict divine protectors of the Buddhist principles) is Fudō Myōō, who is often depicted with a divine sword in his right hand and a wicked whip/lasso in the left to fight against ignorance. These are the weapons that fierce deity link and majora uses respectively. The original monster appeared to be an enlightened being that existed beyond time, space, and mortal vices, much like an enlightened Buddha, but then perhaps the traveler split them apart with his mask, and made them succumb to human desires with his song, therefore losing their enlightenment. Thus, the two masks are created, both containing the same being, but representing different aspects of such: one of hope and perseverance, and one of existentialism and pain.

I love this theory. It also explains why Majora has the Fierce Deity mask in the first place. Plus, the Fierce Deity mask representing the hopes and dreams of those that the monster ate would make sense considering that you trade all your masks to get it. You’re trading all the hopes and dreams represented by the masks that you receive throughout your journey (like the hopes of Anju & Kafei’s love in the Couple’s mask, for example) to obtain the embodiment of hopes and dreams cut from the same cloth as Majora, and therefore powerful enough to defeat it.

In the game, I think the Happy Mask Salesman says it was filled with evil from tribal rituals that were performed while wearing it, or something like that. That could mean it was filled with souls, if the rituals were as dark as they sound.
After it was discovered, Hams somehow realized there were souls inside, and interpreted that story as the most logical reason why they would be in there. We still don't know who those people were that the dragon ate. However, we know they were greedy (according to the dragon), they chose conflict, and they met with a violent end. Even if it's technically not canon, and Hams' version is to be believed, the two stories don't contradict one another. Furthermore, they don't seem to be out of place on a linear timeline.
All together, it looks like it was made out of armor vibrating with residual human suffering, picked up by a tribal people, drove them mad which led to more suffering being absorbed in maniacal rituals, led to the tribe's downfall, and was later discovered again by Hams. All that suffering was finally unlocked by the Skull Kid, and then purified by Link.
And then it became a collectible for the Hero of the Wilds to take selfies with. :3

They match midna and other design the shekiah and Interlopers are very old. Majora can be this creature and somebody who likes demon culture or thought it'd be a great artifact to use could have taken it? Why both these because again it matches designs in twilight princess and some demons that aren't used in games, just eyes on it and malice connection

    Two thoughta:
    1) Masks in Majora's Mask appear when a character dies, and their power is said to be derived from the spirit's unfinished business. Here we see Majora's Mask borne from the same process: the death of a powerful monster with many unfulfilled wishes for its life.
    2) Even more than Link, the Traveler resembles the Fierce Diety. The Traveler kills the monster, just the Fierce Diety Mask canonically defeats Majora's Mask. This leads me to conclude that the monster is indeed named Majora.

  • @farfetchdideas695
    @farfetchdideas695 Před 2 lety +7

Not gonna lie, at the beginning of the story I was interpreting that the beast was the entity inside Majora's mask and the land without space and time represented it's imprisonment within the mask. Then with all the people the creature had eaten being people who had acquired and become possessed by the mask over the ages, the beast feeling loneliness from the essence of the Skullkid, who would be the last bearer of the mask.
The traveler would be a representation of the fierce deity mask (which I'm not sure has any lore tied it?), with the three days of drumming and dancing representing the three phases of Link fighting Majora's mask while wearing the fierce diety mask. But then there's the ending of the traveler carving the mask from the beasts armor. Which makes a lot more sense as an origin story.
Regardless of how much of a stretch that initial assumption I had was, it was an interesting string of thought to be on so I figured I'd share it.

  • @kakarikokage2514

I like to think it started as just a mask in the tribe's rituals, but eventually the god/spirit the tribe worshipped soon possessed the mask to enact its desires. In their plight, the tribe created another mask to combat Majora. Thus, the Fierce Deity was created. After their battle was over, the masks were sealed away in separate locations. The survivors of the tribe abandoned their cursed land, the location of the masks becoming mere legends. Btw, my favorite of the manga so far is A Link to the Past.

Fan theory: majora is the central dark triangle of the triforce. The 3 goddesses are said to be 3 aspects of the goddess of time. In the void between the aspects is the darkness of majora. The being outside of time. Only through power over time itself could it be destroyed. This beast was wearing wish granting armor. What does the triforce do after all?

  • @jonathanmarin1250

So termina takes place in a world within the mask. Filled with the people it ate. Their unfulfilled dreams. A world, time, a dance of three days and nights. All replayed as the world within the mask's festival of time. I mean, it ain't cannon but it's pretty cool.

Majora is the monster its just asleep when nobody wears it, little by little it takes over the user.
The Happy Mask Salesman is behind all of this because he knew where to go to acquire this mask and knew what to do to defeat majora by allowing majora to sleep after dancing so that the mask could be carved and maintain all the power majora had. Majora couldn't leave because he was in a temple, which leads to the conclusion that the Happy Mask Salesman is the traveler. One of the quotes he states,
"I could sense the doom of a dark omen brewing. It was that unwelcome feeling that makes your hair stand on end."
    4:38
Another theory that suggests that it was the Happy Masks Salesman's determination to collect masks that would manifest into the fierce deity mask
5:10 he lied about why he was there when in reality the mask was all that was desired the most.
This would make sense as the fierce deity was the bad guy and can only be worn if every mask was collected because it was the wish majora couldn't figure out from the traveler it was actually the determination of the traveler to obtain the majoras mask.
When you think about it the monster ate all the people who went against it and all of their hopes and dreams are the people that reside in termina
Ironically the name termina derived from the illness that suggests majoras unconscious being stuck forever in a state of sleep.
When you think about it if a monster with so much power were to be free it would wreak all kinds of chaos, which is why the moon is falling.
Even when the moon had the power of the mask the message was the same it wanted to wreak havoc.
When link defeated majora, the Happy Mask Salesman stated that he made alot of people happy, because link freed the people of termina and their hopes and dreams.
The biggest theory I have is that the Happy Mask Salesman is the goddess of power, din. When link defeated ganon and sent ganon to the sacred realm in OoT(future). Technically by link(past) warning everyone about Ganon's reign of terror he messed with Din's plans and hoped to trap link when he left hyrule in his journey to find Navi. The Happy Mask Salesman is the only character that doesn't appear in the future in OoT which means the happy mask salesman wanted to trap link in Majora's dream. Which means termina isn't even real as no one can escape, Ganon was sent to the arbiter's grounds where he would break free in twilight princess. Majora was defeated but not slain, his power was reduced which is why it was later broken into three pieces that would be called the fused shadow. Which is why in twilight princess that ganondorf made reappearance as the remnants of the majoras mask would be seen again as fused shadows.
Aaand link at the end of OoT never made it out of termina which is why in twilight princess as the wolf(link) he was able to train with that same link(who didn't escape termina) in the twilight.

Hey there! I realize your video was posted about a year ago but I wanted to leave a comment saying this was a really well done and informative video. This is random, but if you have played Tears of the Kingdom you may know there is a fuse item obtained from armored lynels in the Depths called an armor shard that shares quite a few design choices as the armor of the monster from the Manga you used as a reference. They arent an exact match but similar enough that it's a neat coincidence at the very least, or perhaps even a deep-cut reference in Tears of the Kingdom to this Majoras Mask manga at the very most.
Thanks for this video, even if I only just found it today, I appreciate the work you put into it. Consider me subscribed for more!

Akira himekawa(the duo creator of the zelda mangas) sometimes do really step their game when they just write whatever they want while using the zelda canon. I dont like their majoras mask manga except from this chapter, because all the other chapters are just extremely rushed. Same for the ocarina of time manga. BUT this chapter is very interesting as it deals with the themes of the main game: time and loneliness. After all ,what made skull kid pick up the mask was his loneliness. Same here with the beast, it felt lonely without even realizing it.
The masks you get in the game all represent the hopes of the npcs you help. The beast here started feeling the hopes and desires of the people it ate.
You get the fierce deity mask(which the developers said in an interview represent the hope and dream of everyone in Termina combined) inside the moon, which was just a creation of the majoras power.
The beast dances for 3 days until it can finally die in peace instead of being stuck in an eternal ''loop'' of sleeping and eating random people. Then in the 4th day it finally dies and time moves again just like in the game there's the ''new day'' after you defeat Majoras and escape the 3 day loop.
Plenty of parallels for you to think about, while still keeping the actual mythos and lore very vague and ambiguous.
This chapter and the one in the twillight princess manga where Link is defeated by Zant momentarily and retreats to be in an abandoned village and finally finds the reason he wants to become a hero: to protect innocent people like that little girl who lost her family, are my favorite chapters written by the zelda mangakas.

The manga books are soft cannon. They never really wanted to connect all the games in the first place until the timeline came out. I highly recommend the manga of MM & OOT books. Im a hardcore fan of zelda if you care about zelda you wont be disappointed.

I think Majoras Mask is a heathen religion, that those of ancient Termina invented. And is a God of sacrifice, since the games four bosses cause sacrifice which can be see as a offering to the Mask.

Fascinating, the N64 games seem to borrow and steal from a range of mythology. Classic English fantasy, Islam, Roman underworld, Egyptian, African, Norse, meso-American, and finally Babylonian all get utilized into the temples. This story seems like a vague mixture of dream-time and biblical origin stories. I guess it’s no wonder why the games have such a mystical vibe, almost every temple is a nod to something from ancient history.

Hmm, now after Tears of the Kingdom..SPOLIER WARNING!!!!....
Zelda becomes an immortal dragon with the consequence of "loosing oneself".
Majora was in fact a dragon orgininally. Gaurding an empty timeless space and land. a land not dead but neither alive.
I reckon Zelda is Majora when something failed and she remained a dragon with the divine power of time, space and dimensions.
And in the end. "Oni-Link" or "Deity Link" is the same Link as in Breath of the wild, Tears of the kingdom. As we all know, he is far stronger then any Link from other games/timelines. And he is also the one that kills Majora. Majora is an immortal God, controling time and space etc. To be able to kill something like that you will need to be able to kill evil. the holder of light. but that wouldnt be enough. you will need a weapon as a master sword. but with just that it wont do. but what if we have a link with a master sword constantly feeding it light force. that will do if its the same master sword from tears of the kingdom. so he is deity link. zelda is majora when things didnt rly go as planned :)

I hate to be negative, but the story from the manga is everything I hate about lazy story telling: Majora's Mask is one of my favorite games of all time, but this story only adds the illusion of new information, it just moved the mystery from "how did the happy mask salesman find this mask" to "how did the other mysterious person get the mysterious mask form a mysterious monster?" It doesn't actually teach us anything meaningful about Termina, or Link, or the mask salesman; or, indeed, the mask itself. It just undermines the unknown aspects of the mask, without adding anything of value to the story.
