  • Today, I'm (finally) digging into the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with a review of Majora's Mask. Discarding many Zelda traditions and going in a wildly different direction than its immediate predecessor, Majora's Mask is often called the black sheep of the mainline Zelda series. Not everyone was sure what to make of it at first, but it still sold well and it's gained a passionate cult following. What do I think of it after finally beating it for the first time? Let's find out. #MajorasMask #TheLegendofZelda #OcarinaofTime

      Personally, I prefer the air!
      Okay, sorry.
I prefer Ocarina of Time because it's easier to pick up and play.
Majoras Mask is in my opinion more interesting but it is harder and can take a pretty long time to finish if you are bad at planning (like I sadly am).
If they would make a Majoras Mask 2, we could have something extremly great on our hands.
The first game was limited by the time constraints which were given to the development team and in my opinion, you sadly sometimes notice that.
For example: I really dislike the well in Majoras Mask. I know, it's atmospheric but in terms of gameplay it just annoys me.
In general, I prefer how creative, unique and atmospheric Majoras Mask is.
But I still like Ocarina of Time more because I prefer the more streamlined appoach for having fun.✌
And the bottom of the well is probably my favorite Zelda place because of childhood trauma.
Ocarina of Time came out in 1998 and I was born in 1998. It was one of the first video games I was introduced to thanks to my brother and I still remember how scared the game made me feel as a child. Emotions like these stick with you even until you are old. xD
Similar with Banjo Tooie. The game traumatized me so much when I was a little kid with the killing of king Jinjo that I honestly can't play this game until this day.
I have no problem playing Silent Hill or the Siren games or Amnesia or other horror games.
But Banjo Tooie? God no, I could never. xD

The potential of more masks just shows how sad it is that Majoras Mask is the only mainline Zelda game in which you can actually play as a Deku, Goron and Zora.
One of the strongest aspects in my opinion about the game and honestly something I would like to see come back in future Zelda games!

Regarding the stories, "Ocarina of Time" and "Majora's Mask" are complete opposites. OoT focuses on the main plot while MM focuses on the backgrounds/characters. To put it another way... If Hollywood got its hands on OoT, it would make a movie, but if Hollywood got its hands on MM, it would make a tv show. We can even claim that MM's plot seems shallow to OoT's plot and that OoT's characters seem shallow compared to MM's characters. The different methods in the games provide different results.
OoT might be the more rewarding game to finish but MM is the game that more people will reflect on.

The four games - Ocarina, Majora and their 3D remakes offer some interesting contrasts and comparisons.
Ocarina was a game with strong design and plenty of polish, where the flaws were largely based on hardware limitations and lack of experience with the new iteration of the medium. Not a perfect game, by any means, but one without any obvious improvements to make without resorting to a major redesign, pretty much from the ground up.
The 3D remake of Ocarina offers a few tweaks, like the motion-aiming, additional face buttons, boots being equippable as items, guidelines in the Water Temple, and so on, but makes very few actual changes to the game - small tweaks that add polish and take advantage of newer hardware, but no radical alterations.
Majora's Mask was a much more ambitious undertaking, even before considering the insane turnaround time on the project. Between the ambitious basic nature of the game, and the rushed development, there are plenty of rough edges that could have used another few months' polish. If the game could have had that extra polish, I suspect it would have unambiguously surpassed Ocarina.
Majora 3D offered Aonuma a chance to fix all the problems he saw with the original, even if no-one else had a problem with them. The result is a mix of improvements (such as it no longer being possible to miss out on the Bomber's Notebook) and dubious decisions (like the new versions of boss fights or the changed swimming mechanics). While overall I'd count Majora 3D as the better version on balance, I don't argue with people who think it's worse than the original due to caring more about the things that changed for the worse, or rating more of the ambiguous changes (like having more hints and quest tracking) as detrimental.

I liked oot for a long time more than majora's mask, but it wasn't until I was an adult that i realized why: aside being the first zelda game that i ever beat myself, oot had the more innocent and child-like attitude instilled in its overworld, its story and at the time, I unconscously picked up on that and gravitated to it because i was still that way myself. The atmospheric shift was so drastic between the two games, I'd pop in oot to unwind from the stress and difficulty of majora's mask - in effect, to be a kid again. Mm was about being adult with responsibilities and the stress, anxiety, pressure, sleep deprivation and managing your time wisely come with it.

    @starfalll Před rokem

I recently found your channel and have been really enjoying your retrospective videos. You clearly put a lot of time and effort into them; they're well-scripted, well-edited and are well-thought out. This video is no exception though I did want to comment as I feel there's something really important missing from the analysis of Majora's Mask in this video, which has only been partially touched upon by some of the other commenters.
You mentioned that the depressing story and characters is only a surface level trait which people tend to focus on, rather than more important things. However, I would argue that the story and characters are the MOST important thing. While it's true that some people may only see it as "depressing", what needs to be focused on which many others praise this game for is "why" it's depressing. And the why it's depressing is because of how this game explores deeper philosophies, particularly those such as nihilism and existentialism. Understanding the philosophies of this game also explains many of the gameplay choices as well.
While it could be rather pessimistically argued that the limitations of the engine and time constraints forced gameplay elements and the developers used the story as a convenient excuse, I see it more that the developers seized an incredible opportunity and executed it brilliantly. Truly examining and reflecting upon what many of the characters in this game say will cause you to start asking some really deep questions, and while initially it may come across as merely depressing, coming up with your own personal answers to those questions is not only satisfying but will leave a deep and meaningful impact for years to come.
I don't necessarily disagree with many of the critiques of the gameplay you put forward in and of themselves however. What I would argue though, is that the game is worth playing DESPITE the gameplay flaws purely for the story and characters alone (although I'd say the overall gameplay is still quite good as well). Gaming has evolved in many different forms over the years, including forms less focused on gameplay and more on story. In a way, such games could be described more as an "experience" rather than just a "game". And I think Majora's Mask is one the best shining examples of this.
While Ocarina of Time certainly has its own great story and characters, it's a night and day difference compared to Majora's Mask. Ocarina of Time may have the more refined gameplay, with less frustrating elements. But Majora's Mask is superior in my mind as it's so much more than just a game.

I played this game for the first time as the 3ds remake. But now that I've played the original, it's so hard to love the water temple when you're swimming so much slower. I still need a guide because I don't want to miss stray fairies, but I've been trying to get everything I can without one. It's been a lot of fun! I wish I grew up with Majora's Mask. It probably would have given me nightmares, but it would have been worth it.
I love the feeling of clocking in a whole lot of progress, having to restart the day and night cycle in order to save the game. But it's a nightmare if the game system ever freezes or the emulator randomly stops. Thank the lord for save states and the ability to save via statue in the remake.
If you're thinking of more Zelda games to play, A Link Between Worlds was a lot of fun to play. I think it's really underrated, I never see people talking about it, like ever.

I’d love to see you go for more Zelda stuff! That’d be SIIIIIICK. Twilight Princess, while slightly derivative of Ocarina of Time, is phenomenal in my opinion, and my favorite of the series, followed by the 64 duology. I think a lot of the issues you have with the game are either due to the obvious rush in development, or actually work more towards the point of the game. The game starts and ends with Link walking, forgotten and unrecognized, into the woods. He doesn’t get a celebration for his deeds, he doesn’t get any appreciation or praise. As far as anybodys concerned, he’s just a kid with a sword. So the problems he solved, while all ultimately converging into the final timeline in the end, are forgotten by the people around him over and over. Leading to his spirit becoming restless after he dies, and then becoming the Hero’s Shade.

Personally, it's really hard to decide between the two. I'd say they're almost equal. MM does look far better due to the expansion Pak, and it's truly a unique experience because of how bizarre the world of Termina is. OOT just holds a special place in my heart due to nostalgia. I remember seeing speedrunners do bomb hovers everywhere and I would try to replicate that, not knowing that you needed to do ISG first. Exploring the (then) big world of Hyrule was an amazing experience. I didn't get the same sense of exploration in Termina, however Termina had far more interesting characters.
I can never win when trying to decide which one I like better haha.

Sorry, I have to quickly write this comment:
At the beginning of this video you said that the 3DS version is most likely the way to go for Newcomers with Majoras Mask.
I strongly STRONGLY disagree on that.
    Here are a few reasons:
    1. Deku-Hopping was made way slower and is WAY less fun. There is literally zero momentum to it.
Hopping on water as a Deku was one of the most fun things to do in the early game because of how little you had in terms of abilitys.
They removed that fun. At least compared to the original.
    2. Zora-swimming sucks now. I don't know what went wrong in their minds, but they made Zora swimming TERRIBLE.
Now, it is not terrible by itself. It works perfectly fine and for a newcomer it's probably just normal swimming.
    But:
If you compare it to the original with how fast the original is and how good it controls, the new one just sucks in comparison in the 3DS version.
    Now...
You can get the original Zora swimming in the 3DS version. If you use mana to swim faster.
But a newcomer will most likely try that out, see that it costs mana and stop using it until it's needed.
A newcomer also most likely won't have a big mana bar.
And even if those 2 factors can be ignored, it doesn't change that they introduced a problem into the 3DS version which was not a problem in the original.
    3. The bosses in the 3DS version suck in comparison.
Every boss now gets this strange eye weakpoint which wouldn't be to bad if it would'nt remove some of the uniqueness in the bosses.
It's not to bad in itself but having Goht pop out this stupid eye after you hit him enough times just looks and feels completly wrong.
The original fight was so nicely paced and now you have to stop, remove the mask, shot arrows, put the mask back on and start rolling again.
It's not a big deal, but it is worse than the original.
    4. Now, to the bosses themself:
    a) The first boss in the forest temple (don't remember his name, sorry) now got only 1 working strategy.
In the N64 original basically everything you had while fighting him was a possible strategy if you used your abilitys and items correctly.
It made the fight really free-form like almost no other 3D Zelda boss in existence (until BotW).
And no. He was not to easy for a newcomer, especially when the game was still new.
Nowadays, it probably is easy. But gamers nowadays are way more experienced.
    Besides that:
They removed all of the strategys which worked in the original. Only 1 strategy works in the 3DS version.
    b) Goht wasn't changed much if you ignore the whole ,,eye-weakpoint" thing.
He is still pretty fun in the 3DS version.
    Nothing to complain here.
    c) Gyorg was changed a lot. He got a whole new phase and that new phase...sucks.
It's not bad in concept, but the camera sucks.
You have to swim with Zoralink into the mines to realese them so that Gyorg sucks them up. But the camera usually focuses on Gyorg once he starts...sucking (sorry).
So you basically have to swim blindly and hope to hit a mine so that you can damage Gyorg.
Yes, it's possible to ,,git gud" at this.
But it's not really necessary if the original doesn't have a terrible bossfight like this one.
Now, unpopular opinion but I actually like Gyorg in the original. He is not the best, but also not the worst.
Many people disliked him in the original and I can say with convidence that he is even worse in the 3DS version.
    d) Twinmold...
    My god...
There is SO much wrong with this bossfight.
Honestly, if you (dear comment reader) want to know what exactly is wrong with Twinmold in the 3DS version, just please google it.
There are multiple articles and forum discussions about Twinmold.
The 3DS version is one of the most hated Zelda bosses in the whole series. Yes. It is that bad.
    Terrible boss now, sadly.
And before you say ,,It wasn't to bad for me!"
Well, that doesn't matter. I am talking about how people generally perceived Twinmold. And the general opinion would be that he...sucks in the 3DS version. Sorry.
I myself had little problems fighting him.
Was it fun? No. Especially because I consistendly compared him to the original.
    e) Majora himself...Honestly, Idk. I don't really remember Majora in the 3DS version somehow.
I think they left the fight pretty much unchanged? I really don't remember, sorry.
    5. If you play the song of time backwards, it slows down the time.
In the original that effect was pretty massive. I think time ran about 25% of it's normal speed.
And I think in the remake, they made it 50% or 60% or something like that...
Now, one could argue that this change isn't that bad.
But I would argue this change just makes you waste your time more.
What actually is gained by nerfing the slowdown song? Nothing. You just have to rewind earlier and redo a lot more stuff a lot more often.
    6. To be fair, the original wasted your time as well by letting you wait around for certain times.
You had the time speedup song but that only moved you forward to the 12 hour mark.
In the 3DS remake you can chose to which hour you want to move. It's an extremly good change and one of the few changes where the 3DS version is way better.
    Edit:
Also you can save freely in the 3DS version which is also a big improvement in my opinion.
But not really necessary, because you can put the 3DS in standby mode.
    Still, nice thing to have.
    7. The graphics in the original are great for the time. It style fits the game really well.
The graphics in the 3DS version look objectivly speaking better.
But they don't really fit Majoras Mask. Everything looks to clean and a lot of the originals horror feeing is removed by cleaning up the graphics.
A lot of the atmosphere is just...weaker on 3DS. Especially with the smaller screen size.
Honestly, that is subjective, but I don't think it is an unpopular opinion that the original graphics fit the game way better than the redone graphics.
    8. The new bombers notebook is great.
The original one was passable, but they improved it a lot in the new one which makes it a lot more newcomer-friendly.
In general, I would still say that this change is not enough to play the 3DS version for how frustratingly bad some of it's design choices are.
You can also play the original just fine.
I dislike saying this but I think the original is a better experience, even if you have to play it with a guide.
Yes, reading a guide is not fun, but at least you get to play a better game.
And than again, even in the original there are just a few sidequests which I would consider obscure enough to actually make a guide a desired option.
    It's perfectly playable.
    9. The 3DS remake introduced fishing ponds.
They exist. Maybe a reason to buy the 3DS version for 3-5% of the playerbase which are interested in extremly similar fishing to Ocarina of Time.
Only difference is: You can actually earn something in Ocarina of Time while Majoras Mask is just there to have fun if that's what you like.
But honestly, if you like fishing in gaming:
    Play Zelda Twilight Princess.
it 100% certainly got the best fishing system of the series and fishing should NOT be a reason to buy the 3DS version of Majoras Mask.
Even if it's funny how you can wear the strongest mask in the game while fishing.
There are a lot more changes which I could mention. Some good, some bad.
But I think this comment is long enough and I think I covered the big picture.
    Just one final thing:
This game is similarly censore to Ocarina of Time 3DS.
In Ocarina of Time 3DS a lot of gruesome graphics were removed and a lot of scary thinks were turned more lighthearted.
For example: The bloody stains you can find in the well were removed.
Or how they made the cursed Hyrule Town way brighter.
Majoras Mask 3D got similar changes. But I won't go into detail about them because honestly, I would have to look up a few of them and I am to lazy to do that now.
But my point is: They somewhat censored a few things in the 3DS versions of both of these Zelda games.
One final thing to finish this comment up.
Watched the video now completly and my only issue is that you recommended the 3DS version to Newcomers.
Past that: I really enjoyed the video.

Thanks for the breakdown - obviously I'm not in the exact position to definitely recommend the 3DS version and I tried to make it clear that my recommendation should be taken with a grain of salt. Same with the Switch port.
I wish I had the time to properly play the 3DS remake and give a full-on comparison with all the content / gameplay changes. Might have to make a follow-up on that once I finally do.

Personally, I only played the 3DS version once when I borrowed it.
It's not a bad game in general, but the problem is not that it's bad.
The problem is just that it's a worse version of an pretty good game.
Also, if you want it physically, it's way to expencive for a 3DS game...

@@tadaokou4919 1) I think the Deku hopping thing may have actually been an oversight.
Since all you need to do is _change a single value_ and it'll return to how it was before.
(Stupid either way of course, but still worth pointing out.)
4a) Odolwa's fight (the 1st Boss) isn't as restricted as you think it is.
It's entirely possible to beat him without resorting to using that "new method".
(Though that method is _absolutely broken_ if used, that much is still true.)
      5) The time difference was it being slowed to 1/3 speed originally, with the new speed being 1/2 instead.
On a side-note: I feel I should mention that MM3D has a mod that actually fixes a bunch of these issues.
(If you aren't bothered by modding a 3DS or using an emulator, then there's no reason not to use it... or at least try it.)

Oversight or not, doesn't really matter. Broken mechanic is a broken mechanic. And no, not broken because it doesn't work. But broken because it's 10 times worse than the original...
      4a.
Most people won't know that and compared to the original, the fight is extremly restricted.
That's the whole point of my comment.
      ,,Compared to the original".
      5.
Good to know, doesn't realyl change my point, but thanks for pointing it out.👍
Modding a 3DS is not an option for 95% of the 3DS playerbase. That honestly is really not an argument for the 3DS version if the original is perfectly playable on an emulator.
And yes, I think emulation would be a legit option here if Nintendo refuses to give us the original game.
Nintendo Online on Switch doesn't count for me because of how terrible the service is.
I honestly think it's so terrible, it threw even more people to emulation...
One final question, as you seem to know a lot about the 3DS remake:
Was the final bossfight against Majora changed in any way? Because that's one thing I somehow completly blanked out from my memory.

@@tadaokou4919 1) Yea I know. I _agreed_ that whether my theory was true or not, the form it was released in was stupid.
(Just that it looked like it was an unintended side-effect of something else they changed,
rather than something deliberately done like the Zora stuff.)
4a) It appears that way, certainly, but it _really_ isn't though.
He's not vulnerable as often as he used to be, but I wouldn't call that "extremely restricted".
Many of your attacks can _still work,_ they just need _more careful timing/aiming._
Hell, you could beat him using _just arrows_ if you really wanted to.
I know most people wouldn't be aware of these things.. that's why I'm bringing it up now.
(This is stuff I've either read about from people that have looked at the code, or that I confirmed myself in testing.)
      5) Well, it wasn't meant to change your point there anyway.
Just trying to bring in some more accurate info (as far as I'm aware, at least).
I know a lot of people wouldn't/can't mod a 3DS, I only mentioned that because it's actually an option for this game mod.
(That doesn't happen often.) But chances are if someone was going to try using it, then it'd be through an emulator.
Considering the combination of the features of the 3DS version, mixed with the stuff tweaked/added/fixed by the mod,
I think makes for a reasonable argument to use this version instead of the original.
You even admitted to a few of its good points earlier.
Like the Song of Double Time change, the new Bomber's Notebook & the altered saving system.
But there's also the improved frame-rate, free camera control, and far less inventory management needed.
Thanks to the Ocarina/Picto Box being given their own buttons, each of the arrow types being usable at the same time
(by having the Fire/Ice on separate buttons) and there being 4 item slots compared to 3 from the original.
With the mod it also gives shortcuts to the transformation masks on the (mostly unused) d-pad, among other things.
The 3DS version even offers more gameplay options and smoother aiming than the original.
(Like being able to invert the 1st/3rd person cameras and swimming controls or add gyro for aiming n' such.)
As for the Majora fight... there wasn't anything like "new [eye] weakpoint" or "new/different phase" at least.
But I believe there were a handful of tweaks done throughout the fight... though I don't remember most off-hand.
Like, some attacks doing more damage, some doing a bit less, or adding more "deku flower"-like spots in the arena, etc.
(Ah, here we are... I managed to find what I was thinking of earlier!)

Great review but I never enjoyed games with a limited timer put in place. Every other action/RPG at the time didn't have this mechanic and I chilled very comfortably with that so as someone who was a huge Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past fan, you can imagine how disappointed I was when I first started playing Majora. It's funny how things work out because till this day, this single mechanic is the fastest and easiest way for me to not buy a game lol.

Agreed. I like to take my time to fully explore a game so that I don't miss out on anything. The fact that this game takes that fun factor away from you fully turns me off from it. I'm not even a big Zelda fan to begin with so that lessens my desire to play it even more. I do enjoy watching reviews of it from certain channels like this one though.

I simply never bothered to go back because I just don't like it. I've always played games to chill and still do so anything that causes me some unneeded anxiety goes in the bin. It's funny that I'll say this but I have no time for such things lol. I didn't play Ocarina or Majora until I was already an adult and I personally liked Ocarina so much more, Majora's Mask felt way more clunky to me in comparison. I didn't like playing as the three main masks, they felt so bad to me compared to just playing as Link. I also hated the feeling of being timed the whole time, I just wanted to play and explore at my own pace but the game just kept giving me this awful anxiety. I did really like the atmosphere and music of Majora's Mask though, so I'll give it that.
