The Longest Taxi Ever - at Fort Lauderdale International Airport

  • Don't get me wrong - I love airports! But at some point we have to get going and actually take off. That process seemed to take forever on this flight out of Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) when I flew with one of our daughters to meet a friend for lunch in Winter Haven, FL (GIF). Come along and see how this all unfolded.

    Dude I feel bad but I started laughing when they sent you back to the taxiway after lining up to wait. Taxi instructions should have included a fuel stop and annual. That was rough. I looked at the track on flight aware and either you are the most precise pilot ever or that GFC600 is. Good stuff Martin!

      Hey Bryan... An annual inspection might have been overkill, but a fuel stop - yes, and maybe an oil change, too. 🤣
      A friend of yours (@michaelfarlow9187) posted some other comments of how he thinks you might have turned this flight into a funny video, something about sitting in the back seat reading a magazine while waiting for your clearance. 🤣

    Hey Martin you guys both did a great job with those 35 minutes pre-take off. Big airports, the joys eh?
    I fly commercially and those are quite typical ground times pre departure…. fortunately someone else is paying for it though!
    Some airports are better than others, and when you mix European slot times in to the equation flying really is a slow way to travel ….. time to spare, go by air!
    Quite popular for GA these days in parts of Europe is the concept of carrying a handheld transceiver to call ATC for an idea of delays, start time and at some places your en route clearance too - it means you don’t have to start up or sit on aircraft battery power (assuming no APU) til it’s actually time to move.
    Also all that idle power taxiing around - am I right in thinking you’d be leaning out on the ground to look after the plugs?
    Great job with the video, as ever. 😊

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  Před rokem +2

      I have a handheld transceiver (mostly for emergencies). I also have the ForeFlight PDC option which didn't work on that flight, but it worked a few days later when Beckey and I flew back to Iowa. I had been to FLL before, and while I know it's a busy place, I did not anticipate it would take THAT long. Yes, looking back it would have been a good idea to get the clearance through my portable radio.
      As for leaning on the ground - yes, I pull the mixture as far back as I can while keeping the engine running smoothly.
      Kind regards,
      Martin

      Thanks, Mike. I envy the weather, too - looking out the window from our house in Iowa right now, it's white on the ground and light gray above the horizon. Nowhere near as pretty as it was in Florida.
      The fuel during taxi is really not much of a concern in a piston aircraft. Fuel burn in my A36 is around 3 gallons per hour, so let's say 1.5 gallons for the extra half hour we spent idling on this flight. That's about 7 minutes of cruise flight at my normal power settings, or 20 miles of range.

      @@martinpauly Well, you have the equipment for them, and as long as you program your electronics correctly, you won't have a problem. One thing about STARS and SIDS is, once you accept them, YOU are responsible. Not ATC. If you bust an altitude, or don't fly the correct heading, YOU get a deviation. My Archer only has a IIIB autopilot, and a KNS80 and KX170B. So, No STARS or SIDS for me. Keep the great videos coming, Martin. You are becoming famous!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  Před rokem

      @@azcharlie2009 I understand, Rick. But there is a flip side: ATC can assign the route waypoint-by-waypoint instead of giving you a SID or STAR. That actually happened to me several times, including in my video of landing in San Francisco (SFO). I still had to navigate the whole thing, except the clearance would have been much easier to communicate and understand if they had just given me the name of the STAR.

With my old KNS80 I could do that, but at 58 miles from DHP, on the 321 radial, it wouldn't be very accurate. I might have to say... "unable, vectors please?" That thumbnail was a gross exaggeration. I’d call it click bait except … I was going to click anyway. 🤣 ❤️🇦🇺

    Hope this isn’t what to expect from our great government run agencies.
    Unfortunately we’re seeing more of this kind of service in both the private and gov’t services. Only 1 guy that cares and is trying to hold down the fort.
    Keep calm in these situations. Going full pissed off, never helps. ( Ask me how I know).
    Well done Martin. Hope all are well and safe.

    Your daughter was correct, this is pitiful. With such a long delay at idle, is there any concern with plug fouling?

    • @LiraNuna
      @LiraNuna Před rokem +1

      always aggressively lean on the ground to avoid the plugs from fouling

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  Před rokem +2

      As @LiraNuna said, if you lean as much as possible, the fouling is mitigated.

      35k for aftermarket AC for the A36. I have factory AC and only use it on the ground. Plenty of cool air above, plus I loose 4-5kt with it on during flight.

      I wouldn't want to be based there, but for the occasional (one-a-year) visit to the area, I don't mind too much. Look at it this way - I got a great tour of the airport! 😎

      I contacted FBOs at both FLL and FXE before our trip. FLL was cheaper for fuel and parking for our trip. It was also closer to our destination. And the folks at JetScape (FBO) at FLL are top notch 👍
