- Join Martin on a real-life IFR flight in August of 2021. We are taking the Bonanza (N70TB) from Cedar Rapids, IA to Elkhart, IN on a typical Midwest summer day, with storms in the area. With some advanced planning (and a little luck, too), this flight turned out to be straightforward.
Route of flight: KCID - EON - MAPPS - KEKM
Altitude: 7,000 feet (eventually 9,000 feet)
A special thank you to EAA Chapter 132 for inviting Martin to visit and speak at their chapter meeting.

I really enjoy your videos. Your clear radio work and overlays are nice. I always enjoy flying with you. Thanks Brian
I appreciate the kind words!
- Martin
Another great video as usual Martin. I love the detail you provide. Helps a lot to see the close up shots as you enter data into the Flight Management systems.Hardly anyone else provides that. It really helps understand the process better
"Help understand the process better" - that's exactly what I am trying to achieve with this style of video. Thank you for the feedback!
- Martin
Welcome to: “Back home again in Indiana!” from a former EVV guy. Beautiful video., Martin. Thanks again.
Thank you, Bruce!
- Martin
Great flight. Thanks
Thank you for the captions!! Keep the videos coming! I learn a lot from every single one of them. Such a professional pilot you are.
Very Nice! Thank you so much, PIC.
Thanks for another great video!
You are welcome, Robert!
- Martin
Great video. I enjoy your professionalism on the radio and the use of foreflight as a back up and source of frequencies to stay ahead of the flight. Thanks again. KAPF
I'm about 10 hours into my instrument training. This video, like your others, are a great tool for actual IFR procedures, etc. Keep these great videos coming. Thanks, Cary.
Nice vid, clean flying. Thank you, Good Day.
Great video boss!
Nice, thanks for your efforts Martin!
Thanks, Christine.
- Martin
Great Video!! I love the graphics and control tower communication on the screen. That takes a lot of work to do. 5 stars for me!
Beautiful day to fly. This vfr pilot appreciates your video.
Love the IFR details.
Glad to hear!
- Martin
Martin, This is the first video of yours I've seen since recently getting my instrument rating. I watched the other hundred or so videos as I was training. I had a great instructor but it certainly was helpful seeing an experienced instrument rated pilot fly when I would allow myself some 'educational entertainment'. I would sit down at my computer and watch and rewatch your videos, often rewinding them to catch the details. I wanted to see real life proficiency, not perfection and I was motivated by what could be done with the instrument ticket. My Bonanza F33a cockpit looks a lot like yours so with your high definition cameras and attention to detail I knew exactly where you were on each approach. Thanks for all your efforts that went into making these videos.
Content rich video that shows most all aspects of IFR flying from weather planning, enroute, and arrival procedures. If you haven’t flown IFR in a while or you are an IFR student this is a terrific video. Editing is well done.
Thank you, Jim - I appreciate the kind words.
- Martin
Very interesting flight, thanks for getting us on board, I enjoyed the flight, and looking forward for the coming content. 👍
Glad you enjoyed the flight, and thanks for coming along!
- Martin
Thanks for such a thorough and no-nonsense flight video. It’s helpful to see other people’s SOPs.
Thanks, Eric. And I like your last name. 😁
- Martin
Another fabulous and very informative video, Martin. Please keep them coming.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the flight!
- Martin
Really cool flight thanks for sharing it with us all. I was driving through that area not too long ago on my way to Chicago.
Thanks, Kevin.
- Martin
Another great flight by Captain Martin. He is always so calm and thorough.
With the new digital flight deck it makes managing the flight a lot easier.
Thanks for sharing 👏
Thank you, Bob!
- Martin
Great flying video...If I can't fly this weekend at least I can hear good communications and think about decision making challenges. Well done.
Enjoy the ride in N70TB!
- Martin
The ink on my instrument ticket is still wet but I found after having gotten it I have very little interest in tooling around VFR anymore. I like this IFR stuff it turns out.
Me, too, Bryan! 👍
And congratulations again on completing your instrument rating.
- Martin
Totally agree Bryan. 5 months into the IFR ticket and I don’t know what I would do without it.
@@ryanberges7568 It's the most utility of any ratings I can think of.
I couldn't agree with you all any more. It's a great ticket to have. I cherish it.
Getting ready to do my IFR training this June. This is my third time watching this video. Very enjoyable now that I am familiar with the process and phraseology. Keep the good work going Martin.
Thank you for the kind feedback, and good luck for getting your instrument rating!
- Martin
Thanks for this video! It doesn't include any sort of "crisis" or major problems, and that's great! It's nice to see what day-to-day IFR flights can be like and why I'll be working towards it after PPL.
Thanks, Thomas. The art, as so often, is to make minor tweaks early so as to avoid having a big problem later. As the old saying goes, a superior pilot is someone who used superior experience, superior judgement and superior knowledge to avoid having to use superior skills. 😁
- Martin
Thanks. Will check it out.✈️
Nice flight!!
Thank you!
- Martin
M…flying single pilot IFR is much tougher on many levels then flying with a crew of 2…no matter what the AC or conditions. Do not care if you are a high time ATP or a low time pilot…the dynamics are many and you must process to the correct decision thread. Your work demonstrates this and helps everyone no matter what the experience level. Well Done.
I always enjoy flying with you, Martin! I don't know how I missed this video earlier. We must have been busy with our summer adventures in the camper going back to Iowa. Anyway, I'm glad I could add a thumbs up for you. Hope we can see you next year at Oshkosh.
I'm glad you enjoyed this flight, and I look forward to seeing you in Oshkosh next year if you can make it.
- Martin
Nice meeting you at Jabara Airport in Wichita KS on the 21st of September. Very cool and friendly guy in person. Safe travels.
Very nice to meet you, too, Eric (and Craig) - I hope I remember the names correctly?
How was your flight in the Citation? You guys took off just as I was taxiing out for departure.
- Martin
@@martinpauly You got the names correct. The flight back to Kansas City was great and quick. Glad you made it back safely. Was great to see you. Such a friendly person. Next time you are in Kansas City let me know I can surely get you a flight. The owner is super cool.

Nice landing
Always a top-notch presentation; great editing. ✈️😎👍
Thank you, Sir! 😁

@@martinpauly ; New glasses, along with a different headset? Smart look and clear audio.
@@buckshot704 You notice everything, Mike! 😁
The new glasses were required by a change in my prescription - the eye doctor mumbled something about "too many birthday candles" or so.
The headset is indeed new. It's called Axis, and the company loaned it to me for a few months for an evaluation. I like it so far. Not unlike the Halo I've been using for many years, but with some interesting differences.
Nice video, Martin. Weather planning for summer XC’s in the Midwest can be a challenge, as shown here… afternoon pop-up thunderstorms can play havoc with one’s flight plan! Thanks for the tip on the Rapid Refresh app… I’ll definitely check it out. I fly from TX to WI several times each summer so this will definitely come in handy. Last August I had to make an unscheduled landing at KCID to wait out some weather.. nice airport! (Not sure how I missed this video last year, I generally look forward to each release!)
Thanks - glad you enjoyed this video, and the Rapid Refresh data and charts are really a treasure!
- Martin
Very thorough video thanks very informative you flew right over me Notre Dame • Indiana
Glad you enjoyed this one, David!

martin -as a 2000 hr pilot most time in a v-tail bonanza plus some 310 of 159 hrs- i can truly say i enjoy your videos very much-no more plane for me -my ownership parter and 2 adult males died on a foggy cfit flight--mike sauser
I am sorry to hear that, Mike. Unfortunately, aircraft accidents continue to happen all the time, and CFIT is a particularly sad example of how a flight can end badly.
Regards,
Martin
Flew into South Bend at night years ago from the south in a 172, tower said “do you have the airport in sight?” and I replied “I have a beacon at 12 o’clock”. Then he said “that’s Niles, Michigan. Look out your left window” and he turned up the runway lights! Sigh, somewhat embarrassing but all good. Thanks for the video!
Great vid, I was keenly listening as to why you chose a midfield departure 😁. Considering the weather and with 5k of runway remaining I think it was the right call. Not that you need my approval 😏
I admit this is rare for me - I will almost always opt for using the full runway length, so there can be exceptions sometimes for operational reasons, as was the case in this video.
- Martin
Martin I’m so sorry I missed seeing you! I live in South Bend and live at the base of those big transmission towers southeast of the South Bend airport. I hope you enjoyed your brief time here!
Yes, I did, Dominic. Thank you!
- Martin
Lived in Elkhart for several years and recall boarding several Air Wisconsin Fokker F27s to get to ORD right where you parked! Much preferred flying on my employer's Lear 35A or King Air 200 that used to be hangared just south of that point, but that was rare! Intended to learn to fly there, got busy with family issues, then had detached retinas after cataract surgery, so I'd have had to give it up before retirement anyway.
ink still wet on my ticket and had a perfect mild-IMC day...found out a few of the instruments in my dad's plane didn't like humidity of the day (sticky glideslope needle on HSI, attitude indicator roll gyro stuck), so we didn't even make it past runup...ugggh. Hopefully the shop gets it all put back together this week, its been down a month. It hurts to put any money into the panel because we know in a year, we will be replacing it all with new garmin glass.
Thank you. Lots of construction at CID. Lots of Bonanzas too
There's construction everywhere, and it takes sooooo long to complete any of these projects. I wish they could wrap these projects up faster, because they are a major annoyance.
- Martin
@@martinpauly I listened for TB but nope
NICE! makes me want to get my IR and an A36
Go for it - at least the instrument rating. I promise you'll never look back.
- Martin
Next one of Martins videos on my Instrument Rating curriculum list-check! 👍
Hi Günther. Glad to hear you are considering the instrument rating. Can I assume this means you have completed your private pilot certificate? Congratulations! 👍
- Martin
Oh man wish I would have known, I’m fly from KEKM!
I like how Bonanza is transcribed to 'finances' by the software. Sounds about right.
The captions provided a continuous line of comedic relief --------
Great video. I wonder why nobody seems to be checking static RPM at the beginning of the takeoff roll. Instruments in the green is a great callout, but we probably want to know if we're producing full power as well.
With a constant speed propeller (such as on my Bonanza), a power reduction would likely not show any lower RPM. I take a quick glance at MP and FF in addition to oil temperature and pressure, but for actual power it's more a matter of what I'm used to feeling vs. what I'm feeling on *that* take-off.
- Martin
maybe he said, "..cleared vfr at elkhart.." ?? Another great flight man!
That's kind of what it sounded like, but I believe that kind of clearance or instruction makes no sense from an ATC perspective.
- Martin
Thanks for another informative video. How are you liking your little AC machine?
Thanks for the comment. I like this little portable AC a lot. It's made many flights a lot more comfortable. Built-in "real" AC would be even better, but it's so expensive...
- Martin
At 14:31, I think he said “Great VFR at Elkhart”. Had to play that back a couple times 😀. That rapid refresh tool looks great. How do you like the ezwxbrief site? Would really like to sharper my weather further - seems like they may be a good resource for that. Btw, the noaa site has a “loop” column, but I have to idea how to “play” it there. Awesome video - probably the best I’ve seen that covers an IFR flight! That level of editing is super impressive (and much appreciated)!
Thank you for the kind words, John. The ezwxrbrief site is quite good; it doesn't provide any information that cannot be obtained otherwise (free of charge), but it makes it more conveniently accessible, which to me has value.
- Martin
Hi Martin, I enjoy your content. How did you choose your routing that day? Im guessing you couldn’t go direct Elkhart due to arrivals into Chicago, but I was curious. Hopefully I get the chance to meet you in Kansas City someday.
ANOTHER REQUEST
Hello Martin.
You do such detail presentations on excellent topics, and since you have been an aircraft owner for a few years, Can you do a presentation on the following topics.
1. What are the steps needed for an AIRCRAFT OWNER has to do inorder to CHANGE THE TAIL NUMBER a potential or new aircraft.
Info like ,
Where to go.
Who to see.
What are the cost involved
What documents needed
How and where to get the document
Hi, I enjoy watching your videos a lot. Can you give me an overview about the built in avionics? Thinking about remodelling avionics here and the setup looks nice and efficient to me. Thanks a lot!
That's a very open question. I'll give you two links to earlier videos which explain what I've done with my panel - please watch those, and if you then have more question, we can talk more.

Nicely done Martin. Your pre flight research sure says off. Do you think most controllers know your you tube channel or just your locals. Excellent flight.
Thanks, Ken.
I don't know how many controllers know my channel - probably a small percentage. But they seem to be spread all over the country.
Regards,
Martin
Great video. I enjoy seeing your flights You present things very well and I have learned quite a bit. Maybe you mentioned this at some point, but what type of a headset are you using? Is it noise cancelling?
Thank you!
Regarding headset - what you see in this video is this one: axisheadset.com/product/axis-aviation-headset/

Martin
So interesting how you were cleared for a visual to “Elkhart airport”. Every other time you get a visual to a towered airport, you get a runway assignment. It must have sometime to do with the fact that KEKM tower is owned by the city of Elkhart…
Interesting indeed. I wonder if a controller sees this and can explain when a runway assignment is made vs. omitted with the visual approach clearance.
- Martin
As an IFR pilot with a glass panel and an IPad, I liked watching your adjustments methodology on both devices. 👍
Thanks for letting us fly along! Good practice for me to see someone with experience. Question: do you control your gopros with the app or a remote or what?
I try to keep the setup as simple as possible, and use the on/off switch on the GoPros to control them by hand.
- Martin
Martin can you make a quick video showing how ForeFlight sends a flight plan to the IFD and it subsequently gets activated?
Hello Martin.
You do such detail presentations on excellent topics, and since you have been an aircraft owner for a few years, Can you do a presentation on the following topics.
1. What are the steps needed for a POTENTIAL OR NEW AIRCRAFT OWNER has to do inorder to register a potential or new aircraft.
Info like ,
Where to go.
Who to see.
What are the cost involved
What documents needed
How and where to get the document.
I Ann considering acquiring my first aircraft.
When cleared for an approach at a non-towered airport the pilot gets to tell the controller what approach he or she wants to fly.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Another question, do the ATC know the specs of your aircraft and how fast/high can you fly
Not rated to this video, but could you show how you do HOT start on your bonanza. Thank you in advance
Martin, Les in Australia. I love your videos. Do you know anyone doing the same with a Baron?
There's always Baron Pilot.
@@captaindunsel2806 Thankyou Sir
How did you program the IFD550 to indicate via voice “Two Miles From xxx”? You were on short final. Can’t find that in the manual.
Lee, that voice is coming from ForeFlight, not the IFD.
Regards,
Martin
Martin once again a wonderful video.
I am looking to buy an iPad and sign up for Foreflight and was wondering what size iPad do you recommend and what level of Foreflight would you recommend. My flying time is around 10 hours a month.
Thanks so much
John, for the cockpit it's hard to beat the iPad mini. I find anything larger will get in the way and obstruct your access to or visibility of something important.
As for the subscription level, I'd start with the basic level and see what that does for you. It's easy to upgrade to a higher level later if you feel something is missing. Unless you already know you want the "Geo-Referenced Approaches & Taxi Charts" feature; then you might as well start with the pro plan.
- Martin
@@martinpauly thanks so much as always
Very interesting to watch and listen to your prestart checklist, Martin. This should be the standard methodology used by all pilots but may have not yet discovered the valuable technique of pointing or touching and verbalizing at the same time. In Japan, this is standard practice on the extensive and complex rail system. It's commonly called shisha kanko (point and call) and results in a very enviable safety record with a single "pilot" (train drivers or engineers) operation. Pointing and calling requires co-action and co-reaction among the operator's brain, eyes, hands, mouth, and ears.
Thank you for pointing this out, Dave. I have been told by several instructors that touching (or pointing) is better than just looking, and saying it out loud is better than just thinking it. I will have to learn more about shisa kanko and get some more background.
Best regards,
Martin
I guess he told you he had TCAS so if he did come to close he would have been warned.
Anyone getting the rating once you trust your instruments and get power settings for your airplane to perform what u want and learn the airplane knows how to fly just input rate power and trim settings leave it alone you have it
I keep my watch set to UTC. No need to change it twice a year or when traveling...
That helps in flying. Not sure it would help me on the ground, though. 😁
- Martin
@@martinpauly Been doing it for decades before getting into flying. All of my clocks are set to Zulu and I just adjust based on current TZ
How long does it take to get used to the ATC
It takes a while. But what helped me was listening to ATC radio transmissions before I ever took a flight lesson. I learned at a towered airport and made radio calls from my 1st day as a student pilot.
@@clearpropcfi3744 Cool, im just in the beginning of the MSFS2020, and the ATC is very unrealistic compared to the real life. But its awesome, in loving it and learning
The future solution of IFR flying is....artificial vision.
When will it come?
