Creating a Great V8-Porsche
Vložit

- I bought this 1985 Porsche 928S in Spain. As I'm explaining in the film, she had been taken from the road in the mid nineties when her owner was involved in law suits following a construction scandal. Twenty years had passed when she returned to the limelight. She's a solid car with no rust, but time took its toll and many systems and especially her fragile electrics need restoration. I'm giving it to her and in a couple of films she'll be a great V8-Porsche ready for a second life.
Thanks to Jo Chen (@Valcuun) for helping me to create the great footage at the beginning and the end of the film.

The 928 is my favorite Porsche. I absolutely adore its shape and the oh-so-German engineering integrity it exudes from every detail. Unfortunately, the 928 was far too good for this flawed, careless world, and people didn't understand it. As a result, they didn't sell nearly as many as they should have, and we've lost far too many examples to neglect and abuse. So glad you've bought this and, as always, I greatly enjoyed the video!
By the way: I've noticed your car has the very desirable option of a full leather-wrapped interior, including the dash and roof. Man, that's fantastic, as it really makes it extra special! Excellent purchase!
Thanks, Matteo.
You know what? I think I can almost feel how much time and good will Harm Lagaay and his team were given to think about the right way of putting this project in shape. And they did!
And here’s a project idea for us: reaching out to him an making an interview …!?
Regarding the full leather interior, I have a secret plan. They guys in Spain have replaced the middle part of the seat covers with new leather and it looks absolutely devastating. Worst upholstery job I’ve seen for long.
Also, we all know how difficult it is to match old and new leather, so I guess I’ll give her Pascha seats. Does that get your blessings?
This is hands down one of my favorite all time vids on CZcams and i don't even own a Porsche.
Camera work, voiceover and attention to detail is wonderful. Love your dry humor!
Can one have a heat gun addiction?
Thanks, Chad.
I’m going to print this out and put it on the workshop wall.
Muuuuuuuch appreciated.
After all these years it still looks a stunning car, a real head turner. Awesome 🙌🏼
Thanks, Davon. In fact the design is magic.
I was a high school junior (U.S.) when I sat in my first 928s; that car became the source of my daydreams - please, more videos of her restoration.
Thanks for commenting, Scott.
Can’t say no to that.
This 928 will be brought back to life again. It still needs a lot of attention and repairs but you gonna enjoy it as all is sorted. Thank you for sharing. 😊😊😊
Thanks for commenting. I’m currently in the “o lord what have I done” phase, but that’s going to go away after one or two major successes.
@@GreasyFingers if it can be endured, then something really great & special is coming your way!
I owned a 1982 4.5 litre 928 for about 10yrs, it was 21 yrs old and had 22,000km when I bought it, original Champagne silver paint, 5 speed manual. Apart from a cracked tailgate latch, the car never had anything break on it. A comfortable GT car that you could drive for a thousand kms on a trip then get right back in and do another 1000 kms. A lovely car.
That’s exactly what it is, a comfortable GT, and never a successor to the 911.
I'm an Aussie Alfisto, and I love your work.
Thanks, mate. There’s nothing like an Alfa.
Great video with clear audio and good camera angles. I'm looking forward to your next one. Thanks 😊
Thanks for the feedback, Steven.
I’ve finished the disassembly of the doors, now waiting for parts to be returned by the plater …
For sure, an iconic car - should have received an award from a design council. Fantastic to see you back and thoroughly enjoy your splendid videos.
Thank you, Lester. Glad your here again.
I think it won all sorts of design awards, for example the Car of the Year 78.
@@GreasyFingersSet the land world speed record at Leguna Sega in 89.
The 928 was the first Porsche I drove, I was just out of Graphic Design collage, had a job designing a brochure for Rollag rollshutters AG. I wanted a Porsche parked in front of the garage with the rollshutters down, I walked into the downtown Porsche dealership and asked for a car, I explained the shoot and offered a by line in the credits for the dealership, within fifteen minutes I was behind the wheel of a 928 with a mechanic beside me. I got the shots I needed within twenty minutes and spent several hours driving around the Toronto touristy areas. That was when I fell in love with the 928, such a classic beauty all too seldom seen these days.
Thanks for commenting, mate. I really like that story. I didn’t have filming to offer, so I went for some imposture to get into the cars I was yearning to drive. There was the Yuppie phenomenon in the eighties, so an expensive pair of jeans and a jacket with heavy shoulder pads sometimes did the job.
Pure epic the 928! Enjoy your S2!!🎉
Thanks, mate. „Landshark“ … 😄
I love the 928 and am myself embarking on a project to restore a 1984 S. I may be biased but I think the 928 is one of the very rare true GT of its time. My car is an automatic -which most people would consider a defect- but still rides like a real GT. I will follow your journey with interest on Alba bring mine to life . Congrats on your great content, your 911 suspension series has been very useful on the alignment of my own 911. Cheers!
Thanks for commenting, Mario.
I totally agree, the 928 is a formidable GT and if you’re used to 911’s, which are puristic and simplistic, the amount of thought that went into the 928 is surprising. The flip side being it’s hilarious complexity in interior and electrical system.
Glad you are back!
928 is a unique car!
Me too, Pantelis. 😊
What a beautiful machine.
Heck, yes. 😊
The owner obviously thought he was Tony Montana. I would do too, driving around in that. Such a cool car!
Tony Montana, yes!
Scarface was first shown in 83, so that really works!
Being from the US, I always considered the 928 a pinnacle. The German Corvette.
I've never driven a Corvette, but just recently I've made a visit to inspect one. They're attracting me more every day.
But The german one was The one you could take your kid to school and corvette not.
Love the 928, really great car and it was way a head of it’s time.
It’s such an amazing piece of engineering and design.
I used to drive past one of these every morning (parked in the driveway of a home) when going to primary school. Always dreamt of owning one.
Risky business is The film I Always have in back of my head while seeing old 928
Well, you can buy this one when it’s finished. 😬
Maybe I've not learned the silent swearing method. I also have learned to help my tools fly, especially the 10mm ratchet. 😂 Beautiful 928 and wonderful work!
Flying tools are sometimes seen in my workshop too. 😆😆
A real nice 928 ! Timeless machine , but oh so complex and expensive to work on ... I always loved it.
Heck, yes. 🙄
You tackled so many of the classic 928 issues all in one video! Outstanding!
Yes, I get a feeling I’m not the only one.
Next on my list: the doors and everything inside them.
I can't wait. My 928 has a blower that only works on high but my hand wont fit in to get the resistor.
Great to see you back. Thanks for sharing your family story - very interesting.
Thanks, Lester.
Yes, it’s an interesting story with lots of people who shaped their little world.
Good to see you back at it with a 928. Wonderful cars, but not the easiest to work on. I still love the intake manifold on that car. I think I'd have to take it off and have it hydroblasted to make it really pop.
Heck, now you planted this idea in my head … 😃
I really hope to own one myself, one day. Thank you for sharing.
Well, you could buy this one. 😊
@@GreasyFingers - Sadly.. I'm in the wrong country, with money that means almost nothing.
Especially this year with the sunken taillights 👍👍

La più bella Porsche mai costruita, bellissima, avanti 10 anni dalle altre sportive; perché per me è irraggiungibile,ma resterà per sempre la più bella! Complimenti!
Grazie, Tullio. Trovo anch’io!
I owned a business next to a business that bought and sold all kind of cars. A person came in to that business and sold a 914 that wasn't running. I bought it cheap , and low and behold if it didn't have twin carbs in boxes in the back. The body was actually in good shape...i should have kept it and got it running, but I flipped it.
We all have those car regrets, don’t we? There’s just one cure and you know it … 😊
Very beautiful car. I would say that the only thing I do not like about this car are the reverse pop-up headlights. It doesn't really make sense as the purpose of pop-ups are to protect the headlights when not in use. But here they're exposed all the time no different from fixed headlights. But it's indeed one of the better Porsches to have come out!
And who would ever forget it as Decepticon Dead End in Transformers, and as Gloria Baker's sci-fi vehicle in M.A.S.K? I have fond memories of it in the 80's as a kid!
I wasn’t aware about Gloria‘s vehicle, but looked it up in the medical. Very cool, thanks for the heads up!!
After a terrible week at work, it was a wonderful surprise to see this video pop up.
I will take your advice and silently swear my way through the tough stuff.
I love it. Thanks for the content.
I'm really glad to be back, especially when I read the letters ABROOKSH.
I am freshening up an e24 that has met with some clumsy repairs. Your work with that (by comparison) delightfully simple headliner with the challenging issues has given me some ideas for how to deal with my tattered parcel shelf. Very clever!
Thanks for commenting, Rob.
I’ve now also used the method for the pressboards of the doors and it again worked great.
“Silently swear until it’s over”
I can relate, I have both an old Porsche and a TVR 😂
Yeah, these "under the dashboard jobs" ... I'm too old for that 💩
Beautiful car, excellent filming, thanks.
Glad you like it, Chris.
I commend you for your diligence and thoroughness when undertaking such troublesome and often painful work - truly inspiring. What's more, your elegant descriptions and comedic dry humour is very entertaining. Thank you.

What a collection You have. I look forward to the coming episodes of alfa? Porsche 911 / 928? Or else? You make fantastic videos, thank You.
Thanks, Ole. Much appreciated.
I’m a workshop, so not all the cars are exactly mine. In many cases, however, after I’ve finished one and before I sell her, it takes a couple of months and during this time I do enjoy them.

Awesome video, I can sympathize sorts out my 928 issues. Still one of my favorite cars to drive. Thanks for the interior liner repair tip. I'll try the wood glue and hot water on my deformed liner. Looking forward to the next video!
Thanks for commenting, John.
Though one comes across quite many annoying issues with these cars, they remain absolutely adorable and fixing stuff is even more rewarding than with 911‘s.
An excellent project choice! This will be worth the wait, I'm sure. Thank you for sharing it.
Welcome, mate.
Awesome dude! I saw 22 seconds of this video and I know I'll love it. Thank you !
Thanks, Robert. Stay tuned!
Very, very well done. I do have a 928, and videos like this are really helping me prep to be patient with its maintenance. While there are some challenging repairs and replacements, nothing has told me this is a shoddily built vehicle. I also almost saved this to my ASMR playlist, but then the music started. :)
Thanks, Alex.
In fact I’m trying to stay close to the ASMR line, but sometimes I get carried away. 😆
Love your videos and look forward to seeing the 928 progresses.
Thanks, stay tuned, next will be the doors.

Cool, which year and colour is yours?
1982 wine red metallic, 5 speed. I bought the car in boxes and rebuilt the engine, quite a fun and rewarding experience.
@@TheLadeef That’s giving me hope, I’ve bought an Alfa GT in boxes and the moment when you realise what you’ve done …
I love the 928, first time I saw it Kuwait in mid 1980's and loved it.
I never own a Porch , too tight for me , I'm a big tall man, so my daily car was a Mercedes 450/500SEL, great cars back then
They have lots of space inside, way more than 911’s. You might want to give it a try, it’s never too late.
Great video., you are a master of your hobby!
Thanks, Bobby. Glad you liked it!
In an unusual twist of fate, one of the most dangerous places turned out to be the safest place of all for our dear friend Mr. 928.

You’re doing a great job on bringing her back into the world……manual as well……. So was mine I had the S2……
Love the dry humour too😉👌🏽
Humour? What humour? 😆

My word these 928's are complex things. I don't think i'll be swapping my 944 for one soon. But although they are perhaps a little over-engineered, you can't help but love them and I am so glad you have taken this on. Cannot wait for part 3. I started restoring my 944 during lockdown and finally got an MOT on April the 19th. If I bought a 928 to restore tomorrow, I would probably finish on April the 19th 2032 - seen as they are doubly complex (if I wasn't made bankrupt beforehand). Keep up the good work and i'll keep learning too!
Thanks for commenting.
I love the 944 too. In fact I’ve started scanning the classifieds …
@@GreasyFingers There is a red one in America! I am a bit of a puritan (not in the Presbyterian sense :) ) and I have endeavoured to keep mine original at every stage when possible - as long as the PET doesn't throw up 'NLA' and you can't find a replacement on Fleabay, or at the breakers. It's a lot easier and cheaper to modify. Too many classics are modified - even at a higher level like the Gunther works 993, the Singer 911's etc. Why? Travesties. So I enjoy your restorations because you are getting the cars back to what they must have been like when they left the factory. I've had an inkling of that now that 95% of the mechanical work is done with it's new bushing all round and the L Jetronic delivering, the tall but slick gear change. It's driving like it's meant to. Delete the problematic MAF, replace the torsion bars with coil overs, replace with gas struts, stick a short shift linkage in, over cam the engine, re-map the ECU, make it go faster... and in that process, you loose the soul within that was inexplicably Porsche; the thing you couldn't put your finger on because Porsche's are greater than the sum of all their parts and the only cars I have ever owned that are positively inexplicable. That complexity is what makes them and gives us headaches as you try to reverse the accumulated neglect and abuse. I wish you luck on this 928 journey.
@@pinno713 Couldn't agree more!!
Thank you for sharing another great video, I eagerly await the next instalment.

Great! A new project! Looking forward to the updates! Connor🇮🇪
Thanks, Connor.
In 1980, my father came Home with a 928, his car was at the dealer for some days. We had the 928 for a week and drove the Autobahn A6. He always had fast Porsche, but this was totally different. This car was fast, faster than most cars, but even after an Hour at more than 200 km, we felt relaxed. Right the Opposition of a 911 turbo! But in Tees days, Nobody wanted this car! Today I don‘ t understand why.
Thanks for commenting.
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I guess, at the end of the day, the only bad thing you might say about a 928 is that it’s not a 911.
I knew, why I hated the 928. These silly frogeyes
I just discovered your channel just now. I watched about 3 minutes before I knew I was subscribing. Well done. Very nicely presented.
Glad you’re here. Enjoy!
🥳 this will be fun to follow!! Beautiful color!
What color is it? He doesn't say and it was videoed in the dark. I'm guessing White Gold Metallic (539)
That's exactly right, it's White Gold Metallic (539)
Yes!! I’ve been waiting for these videos ever since I saw you posted you bought this gem! Working on a ‘79 928 myself currently. Look forward to watching you work on her.
Waaaaaa, fantastic! Nothing comes close to style of the early years' cars. What color is yours?
@@GreasyFingers Well, it was Guards Red when we got it, but we could obviously tell it was originally gold (black interior). I’m planning on taking it back to the original Gold Casablanca Beige Metallic.
Interesting project. I'm looking forward to your journey.
Thanks, Bob. Stick around ...
@greasyfingers nice job, the 928 was a personal passion of mine for a good number of years, it was nice to see a part under the bonnet that i too, of course replaced on one of the 4 928’s I cycled through in various states of disrepair.
When I worked at Porsche and drove a 997 GT3 the 928 lost all its appeal, i had a Spyder and both the 996/986 997/987 are so much better driving cars and don’t have any of the recurrent gremlins that the 928 anyone is going to buy today is inevitably going to come with.
The 928 has an amazing support group online, there were even owners who learned how to refresh blown Motronic computers and all kinds of things.
Nice job, I’ve only seen the first 4 minutes, i like that you take the effort to restore the headliner as opposed to simply replacing it.
Actually, owning and wrenching on the 928 is how I developed my Passion for all cars Porsche has made, I learned about the quality of the 928 when I would disassemble something and marvel at the ingenuity of the part or the quality of the materials. Really an exceptionally well made, well engineered and well designed cars in the Porsche history.
Thanks for an extensive feedback, Ryan. To me, the 928 is a widely misunderstood car. So many people consider it as the successor of the 911, but I never was. The actual reason for the concept is Mercedes’ success with their SL series. If you look at it that way, you suddenly realise how brilliant it is.
@@GreasyFingers have you read the excellent book about the 928’s development? I cant recall the name but it covered the hot and cold weather high mileage testing Porsche did, seek out this book if you’re loving 928’s. Crap i cant remember the name…

Thank you for the content.
You’re welcome, Ian.
Really looking forward to this series.
Yes, I’m equally looking forward to the project. The 928 community is a joy to deal with.
When I owned my S4 there was never a day when I could say that everything worked. I hope we see much more of your little gem over the coming months.
Thanks, Steven! I’ve only just figured out a problem with the doors‘ back lights and while I was looking for the reason why the little buggers kept going even when the doors were closed, I cursed myself for the loudmouthed announcement to make an everything-works-car.
I loved the style and panache of my 928 but one of the biggest headaches was an “earth leak” causing the battery to constantly drain (tried several new batteries in trying to track it down). Even a local well respected automotive electrical engineer gave up eventually. Worked fine for years, then one day - the sound of the frustrating click of the ignition. Why, Porsche, Why?
😆😆
I‘m sure you’re aware, but testing the current over the sockets of the fuses helps you locating the problem.
You might also want to remove the fuse and see which one’s absence avoids the battery’s discharge.
Good to see you back again, that’s definitely going to be a labour of love but you have skilled greasy fingers and eventually it will be worth it 😊
I hope so, Joe. She's constantly pushing me to my limits.
Nice car that requires your infinite patience and skill to bring back into the world after its sentence.
Yes, patience is key with her. So complicated ...
Originally designed to replace the 911 no less
Awesome cars 👍🏻
Well, yes & no. I think they were well aware that this is more a GT than a real sports car. They thought, however, that their future lies in GT's and planned to give up the 911.
I admire your skill and determination, as well as your taste and love for these cars. ❤ I am checking already what this car may cost when it is properly sorted. 👍🏻
I like that comment, because the day will come when I have to sell her, so may many feel like you!
I owned a 1987.5 back in 1993. With this the exact same color. I loved that vehicle. One day my ex asked to borrow the beauty, and totaled it, drunk driving.😢😢😢😢

I hope it won't disappoint you, mate!
My 928 is my favorite too, i came from a 911. But the air conditioning and rear hatch release are both issues on mine
You wouldn’t believe how much work went into the repair of the hatch release. It was all electrical stuff, hence hard to film, but it was rather days than hours.

Please change the timing belt as soon as possible... and please check the engine for all rubber gaskets, rubber hoses (especially fuel system), sealing rings and everything made of rubber from the suspension, steering system, drivetrain, brake system.
Manufacturer Elring for example states that all their gaskets, sealing rings etc. have a lifespan of 10 years, especially if getting hot, in contact with engine oil etc... also if exposed to intensive sun- and UV- light
After this period, the softeners contained in the material will have deteriorated, it will harden out and start to brittle and crack.
You know what you're doing, and I don't want to mess up with your stuff; it is just meant as a good advice! 😊
Thanks for your comment, mate. It's much appreciated. I totally agree to all you say, though I must admit that the devil on my shoulder was whispering in my ear that some of it might sure be alright.
In fact I have an invoice at least about the belt, but given the quality of some of the repairs I find, I rather check it again / do it again.
I really enjoy your videos!
Glad you enjoyed it again, mate.
I’m laughing out loud about the two man resistor job, wow this brings back lovely memories. You’re right, this car will leave you with a cranky back, great car once it’s in order.
😆😆
Hi, great car. So great, that I own 3 of them. One thing: My mechanic told me not to solder the resistor unit for the fan speed. He said that this unit is getting very hot and everything I would have soldered would fall off, as the unit is getting hotter than the melting point of the solder material. This is the reason why the unit is initially cramped and so expensive as a second hand part. Best wishes from a German dude who lives in Taiwan
Thanks for commenting. I had exactly the same thought and in fact I somehow expect it to fall off at some point. That’s when I’ll get my hard soldering equipment out … 😊
Thought I’d just give it a try the easy way first.
Diseño muy bonito el del 928
Thanks, mate!
In 1986 my father bought a slightly used 928. My parents would travel overseas frequently which meant I would try to find the spare key and take the 928 out on the town while they were gone 😎. I did find the spare key.
The Steering Wheel Tilt setup on a 928 actually tilts the entire gauge console and steering wheel as one unit. On my 1st time taking her out, I tilted the console all the way down. So far down that the gauges and odometer stopped working. Tilting the console back up didn’t fix it. This was a Friday night and I already broke my dad’s Porsche 😢. Talk about bad luck.
Monday morning I was the 1st person in line at the Porsche service facility. The tech knew exactly what the problem was and showed me the wiring harness plug that got pulled out. It was right there above the brake pedal.
He said that it happens all the time and it doesn’t cause any problems if the car is driven while it’s unplugged.
He also said that the only real issue is that the odometer will not clock miles while it’s unplugged. The odometer is analog but powered electrically. He winked a little and there was no charge. I guess he knew 😉
Thanks for telling us that story, mate. It’s fantastic!
I guess it’s these little memories that build up in our minds to the insanity of buying and restoring one. 😄
@@GreasyFingersI loved that car.
You are on a shopping spree for sure! 😃
Yes, but I have a holy vow now: no more project cars. 🙄
In case anyone is wondering, the wire in the resistor pack is Nichrome resistance wire which is crimped in place. It can get too hot for solder to hold in place and it does not accept solder well. The resistor packs are also NLA from Porsche although new-old stock pops up from time to time.
Find the source of your sunroof water leak. The silicone tubes can tear at the A-pillars or rust can eat away at the drain nubs. The sunroof panel has a plastic drip plate at the rear that can crack/warp and leak water onto the center of the liner. They are still available new for $300-ish each.
Nice colour. The criminal that bought the car new had good taste.
Thanks for commenting.
When I soldered the new resistor in, I already reckoned it won’t endure for long, but I wanted to give it a try. Till now it’s good, so let’s see … I’m having an eye on reasonable eBay offers in parallel.
The sun roof troubles me a lot, so any good advice is highly welcome.
@@GreasyFingers @GuysWithRides1 has a video up that shows how hot the resistor pack gets. The larger gauge wires glow red hot without an airflow.

Hmm, pod takes 15 minutes to remove. Mark the location of the mounts is key.
When removing the fan rheostat, tie a bit of string to it. Makes refitting easy, like a pull wire - you pull up on string and then grb it with pliers. One man job
Hahahahah “open mouth posture” I say roll with it
