Creating a Great V8-Porsche, Pt. 2

  • I bought this 1985 Porsche 928S in Spain. As I've explained in the first episode of this series, she had been taken from the road in the mid nineties when her owner was involved in law suits following a construction scandal. Twenty years had passed when she returned to the limelight. She's a solid car with no rust, but time took its toll and many systems and especially her fragile electrics need restoration. I'm giving it to her and in a couple of films she'll be a great V8-Porsche ready for a second life.

    Your work is to such an exceptional standard that I can't believe I would ever make a suggestion... but here it is, get an 'Engineer' branded crimping tool. So much better and easier than crimping connector pins with normal pliers! Love your channel.

    • @alessandromeyer4888
      @alessandromeyer4888 Před 2 měsíci +2

      I agree or get the cheaper chinese Iwiss crimpers. Would also allow you not to use the shrink/solder wire splicers but actually crimped ones with a proper heatshrink. 🙂

    • @MrBlaadieblaa
      @MrBlaadieblaa Před 2 měsíci +4

      Totally right. Soldered connections are to be avoided at all cost in environments with mechanical stresses like vibration and bending. The wire strands will fatigue and break where the solder ends as this is a stress concentration point (going from stiff to flexible).
      Always use crimp connectors with the proper crimping tool. Finish with a (waterproof) shrink sleeve.
      Buying a good crimping tool is an investment you'll never regret.

      Guys, thanks for commenting. I’m really grateful for recommendations when it comes to electrical systems, as I’m not on good terms with electrons.
      Funny enough, in the meantime two (!) viewers have gifted me a crimping tool and I’m looking forward to using them.
      More in the next films …

    I'm so glad I found this channel. As an automotive engineer myself, I like some meticulous attention to detail. I enjoy seeing someone doing work and finishing tasks. I seem to always start a task and "finish" it, only to find myself finishing it some more at a later date. Having improvement ideas and hating entropy.
    Also, I am so glad to see you building your workshop. As you can imagine, this is a hidden dream of mine, too. I'm about 35 now and have been dreaming about one for just 5 years. I hope I'll get there too.

    Subscribed and following intently. . . This truly could not have come at a better time. I've always dreamed of restoring a 928, and my life circumstances are shifting, a new home out in the country, more land, less expenses, all of which means a proper garage to work on cars. My dream of building a 928 is realistic now, and seeing such an up to date reference for work being done on one is not only helpful, it is a large motivation for me when the time comes. Thank you

    I believe that the car painters that performed your mirror work went to the same school that the car painters/repairers that performed the wiring work on my Alfa 156 V6 - which had in the past, under a previous owner, had suffered a wiring fire at the rear. In short, atrocious work in 'splicing in' a replacement portion of the wiring loom that consisted of about 20 wires - that in the end unleashed a host of gremlins that required addtional 'jumper wires' (of course all coloured black) to be 'spliced in' at different points of the wring harness. However, they were at least able to perform the circa 20+ twisted cable connections - i.e. no crimping or soldering 'here' - using the same colours - so I can conclude that the painters/repairers were at the very least not colour blind. Like you, I hope they turn up the heat to maximum when they finally make it to their final resting place in hell.

      @@GreasyFingers The Alfa 156 V6 has certainly created some headaches, and it's somewhat consoling when others have encountered similar poor workmanship issues on their cars. In my case, all is forgiven when I hear the delightful and sonorous Busso V6 engine in full flight. I'm so smitten that I'm now in a 'chase' to find an unmolestered version of its bigger brother - the Alfa 156 GTA - which given its age is somewhat challenging. As in your case, I'd dearly love a 156 GTA Sportswagon - however these were not imported to Australia - so a sedan will have to do.

    I've owned 4 porsche's, and I regret selling my 86 928S the most. A word of caution: check the rubber grommet that feeds the cable thru the transmission tunnel to the O2 sensor. It sits directly above the catalytic converter and gets dried out. It's also an infused wire, and can start an electrical fire if it shorts out. Ask me how I know.😢
